Hays residents lined Vine Street Sunday in silent prayer, holding signs united by a single message: choose life.

The 2025 National Life Chain opened with a prayer service at St. Joseph Cemetery. Fr. Nick Parker of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church led the service, reading scripture and highlighting God’s intimate creation of each person.

"It's a wonderful witness that we have today, where we are able to show our love for the born, the unborn, the young, the old, and let people know that they are truly children of God," he said.

The annual event is a peaceful, hour-long demonstration held on the first Sunday of October, where church members and congregations gather to express their stance on abortion publicly.

Parker encouraged attendees to demonstrate compassion and peace rather than anger or judgment, emphasizing the importance of love for all people.

Alicia Knight, an organizer, described the Life Chain as a public expression of faith meant to connect with others and encourage support for the movement.

"There is a large community that is pro-life that believes in the right to life. From natural conception to natural death," she said. "It should also encourage those who have chosen abortion, for them to feel mercy and love for any decision that they made, and that they are welcomed here too."

Knight said anyone who has had an abortion or is pregnant and seeking support can reach out to <a href="https://ccnks.org/">Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas</a> or <a href="https://www.rachelsvineyard.org/">Rachel's Vineyard</a>, which its website describes as a place to “renew, rebuild and redeem hearts broken by abortion.”

Chase and Julie Berg said they believe it is important to raise awareness about what they consider the "tragedy of abortion."

"If we can't protect our citizens at the most vulnerable state of life, then why does anybody think they're going to be protected in the U.S.?" Chase said.

"The opposing side can be very loud. It's important to show that we're here, respectful, and we want to show up with love and kindness," Julie said.

Chase and Julie attended the demonstration with their baby and said they have four children. They added they hope to see more young people take part in next year’s Life Chain.

"Be pro-life or there won't be a next generation," Chase said. "It's not a young person's issue, it's an everybody's issue."

Hays residents join National Life Chain in silent demonstration

BELOIT and HAYS — Fort Hays Tech | North Central is proud to announce a significant achievement in its ongoing commitment to student success. Thanks to the generous support of numerous donors, in collaboration with the Fort Hays Tech | North Central Foundation, a record-breaking 115 scholarships have been awarded across both the Beloit and Hays campuses during the 2025/2026 academic year.

 Fort Hays Tech | North Central hosted receptions for students and donors at the Hays campus on Wednesday, September 24 and at the Beloit campus on Wednesday, October 1. 

The success of these scholarship programs would not be possible without the generosity and commitment of the donors who have made them a reality. Their belief in the potential of students and their dedication to technical education have set an inspiring example, encouraging the recipients to pay it forward and support future generations in their pursuit of knowledge. 

These scholarships, created by dedicated benefactors, have been established to provide vital financial assistance to students pursuing a variety of programs at Fort Hays Tech | North Central. The enduring legacy of these donors is reflected in the annual scholarships they have created, ensuring that students receive support not only now but into the future.

 Eric Burks, president of Fort Hays Tech | North Central, expressed his gratitude, "Honoring the legacy of our donors, their contributions, and their leadership in educating our future workforce is a pleasure, and we can't thank them enough for their generosity.”

Fort Hays Tech | North Central awards record-breaking 115 student scholarships 

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">President Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;did not let the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/government-shutdown">government shutdown</a>&nbsp;interfere with a stop in Norfolk, Virginia, on Sunday to salute the Navy as it celebrates its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.navy.mil/Navy-250/">250th anniversary</a>&nbsp;— using his speech to praise both the Navy and himself.

Trump delivered remarks that by his own recognition bordered on making it more like a campaign event, generating some applause from the crowd before closing out with a recording of his theme song, “YMCA” by Village People.

“Let’s face it, this is a rally,” Trump told the crowd that the Navy estimated to be 10,000 people.

The president criticized his political opponents and attacked Democratic lawmakers as the shutdown entered its fifth day, causing military personnel to work without pay until the government reopens.

“I want you to know that despite the current Democrat induced shutdown, we will get our service members every last penny. Don’t worry about it," Trump said to cheers from the crowd.

The government shutdown that began Wednesday has sparked partisan blame games as several thousand federal employees are furloughed and key infrastructure and energy projects in Democratic-run areas such as New York and Chicago have been put on hold. It lurked in the background of the event as Trump praised a Navy that he said has “never failed to hunt, kill and win.”

Senate Democrats rejected efforts to preserve a continuation of government operations when the new budget year started on Wednesday. They cited the lapse in subsidies that could cause health insurance costs to climb rapidly for people who get coverage through the 2010 Affordable Care Act. Democratic lawmakers also have sought to reverse cuts to Medicaid that Trump signed into law.

Democrats oppose Trump's move to have his administration decline to spend congressionally approved funds, saying it undermines the budgeting process, among other concerns. Meanwhile, Trump has explored laying off federal workers at what he called “Democrat Agencies.”

Among those joining Trump for the festivities were first lady Melania Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Navy Secretary John Phelan, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins and U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, a former Navy rear admiral who was a White House doctor during Trump's first term.

After his arrival in Norfolk, Trump went to the USS George H.W. Bush and spoke to the sailors and handed out challenge coins.

The Trumps then watched a military demonstration while standing on the deck of the aircraft carrier. Navy destroyers launched missiles and fired shells into the Atlantic Ocean, Navy SEALs descended from helicopters and fighter jets catapulted off.

The president has increasingly sought to leverage support from within the military as he has escalated its role in American society, asking troops to patrol the streets of U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Washington, Chicago, Memphis, Baltimore and Portland, Oregon. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Trump was seeking to send his state's National Guard to Portland after the administration's previous moves to deploy troops in the Oregon National Guard were blocked in court.

Trump on Tuesday addressed a gathering of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pentagon-hegseth-meeting-military-commanders-4ceb8026bff7c652b08c08e8afb1df99">military leaders</a>&nbsp;abruptly summoned from across the globe to Virginia by Hegseth. The Republican president proposed using U.S. cities as training grounds for the armed forces and he spoke of needing military might to combat what he called the “invasion from within.”&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/military-combat-women-race-hegseth-d406029d0e0dfd52443ef8d7fcb765cb">Hegseth declared</a>&nbsp;an end to “woke” culture and announced new directives for troops that include “gender-neutral” or&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hegseth-pentagon-defense-combat-women-trump-b423fd49730d9ab97151a2d2a4fdf6a7">“male-level” standards</a>&nbsp;for physical fitness.

The administration is seeking to reshape Pentagon culture and use military resources for the president’s priorities, including quelling domestic unrest and violent crime.

Trump has also engaged the military in an armed conflict with drug cartels, leading to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-hegseth-venezuela-drug-cartels-unlawful-combatants-1848b02febe08acacb82979d7da47dfb">four strikes</a>&nbsp;on boats in the Caribbean that Washington says were involved in trafficking.

Don’t worry about it," Trump said to cheers from the crowd.</p><p>The government shutdown that began Wednesday has sparked partisan blame games as several thousand federal employees are furloughed and key infrastructure and energy projects in Democratic-run areas such as New York and Chicago have been put on hold. It lurked in the background of the event as Trump praised a Navy that he said has “never failed to hunt, kill and win.”</p><p>Senate Democrats rejected efforts to preserve a continuation of government operations when the new budget year started on Wednesday. They cited the lapse in subsidies that could cause health insurance costs to climb rapidly for people who get coverage through the 2010 Affordable Care Act. Democratic lawmakers also have sought to reverse cuts to Medicaid that Trump signed into law.</p><p>Democrats oppose Trump's move to have his administration decline to spend congressionally approved funds, saying it undermines the budgeting process, among other concerns. Meanwhile, Trump has explored laying off federal workers at what he called “Democrat Agencies.”</p><p>Among those joining Trump for the festivities were first lady Melania Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Navy Secretary John Phelan, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins and U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, a former Navy rear admiral who was a White House doctor during Trump's first term.</p><p>After his arrival in Norfolk, Trump went to the USS George H.W. Bush and spoke to the sailors and handed out challenge coins.</p><p>The Trumps then watched a military demonstration while standing on the deck of the aircraft carrier. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Trump was seeking to send his state's National Guard to Portland after the administration's previous moves to deploy troops in the Oregon National Guard were blocked in court.</p><p>Trump on Tuesday addressed a gathering of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pentagon-hegseth-meeting-military-commanders-4ceb8026bff7c652b08c08e8afb1df99">military leaders</a>&nbsp;abruptly summoned from across the globe to Virginia by Hegseth. EMPORIA, Kan. - Fort Hays State fell to Emporia State by a score of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (2-6-1, 0-3-1 MIAA) leveled the match twice in the first half on a pair of goals by Sydney Cotter, but it was not enough as the Hornets (6-3-0, 3-0-0 MIAA) added three more in the second half.

After Emporia State took an early 1-0 lead, FHSU and ESU traded a flurry of goals in the waning minutes before halftime. The Hornets scored in the 5th minute, but FHSU equalized in the 40th minute on a header by Cotter off a corner kick from Megan Wiman. Emporia State regained the lead with just under a minute remaining in the first half, but Cotter quickly responded, scoring just 12 seconds later to level the match once again. Cotter now has six goals on the season to lead the Tigers. FHSU outshot ESU 8-6 in the opening half.

It did not take long for ESU to regain its lead for the third time in the match as Avery Zimmerman provided what turned out to be the game winner in the 48th minute. The Hornets eventually added on goals in the 79th and 83rd minutes to run away with the victory. ESU outshot FHSU 8-1 in the second half and 14-9 for the match.

Jamie Kerkvliet got her first start in goal for FHSU and made six saves. Mackenzi Goen of ESU made four stops between the pipes.

⚽ Cotter scores twice, Tiger women fall to Hornets in Emporia

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — The Trump administration said Friday that it would pay migrant children $2,500 to voluntarily return to their home countries, dangling a new incentive in efforts to persuade people to self-deport.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement didn’t say how much migrants would get or when the offer would take effect, but The Associated Press obtained an email to migrant shelters saying children 14 years of age and older would get $2,500 each. Children were given 24 hours to respond.

The notice to shelters from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department’s Administration for Families and Children did not indicate any consequences for children who decline the offer. It asked shelter directors to acknowledge the offer within four hours.

ICE said in a statement that the offer would initially be for 17-year-olds.

“Any payment to support a return home would be provided after an immigration judge grants the request and the individual arrives in their country of origin,” ICE said. “Access to financial support when returning home would assist should they choose that option.”

ICE, the Department of Homeland Security and the Health and Human Services Department did not immediately respond to questions about the amount of the payment and age eligibility.

ICE dismissed widespread reports among immigration lawyers and advocates that it was launching a much broader crackdown Friday to deport migrant children who entered the country without their parents, called “Freaky Friday.”

The administration has also offered $1,000 to adults who voluntarily leave the country. Advocates said $2,500 may prevent children from making informed decisions.

“For a child, $2,500 might be the most money they’ve ever seen in their life, and that may make it very, very difficult for them to accurately weigh the long-term risks of taking voluntary departure versus trying to stay in the United States and going through the immigration court process to get relief that they may be legally entitled to,” said Melissa Adamson, senior attorney at the National Center for Youth Law.

Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, echoed concerns about the offer, saying it “pressures children to abandon their legal claims and return to a life of fear and danger without ever receiving a fair hearing.”

U.S. border authorities have arrested children crossing the border without parents more than 400,000 times since October 2021. A 2008 law requires them to appear before an immigration judge before being returned to their countries.

Children have been spending more time in government-run shelters since the Trump administration put them under closer scrutiny before releasing them to family in the United States to pursue their immigration cases.

The additional scrutiny includes fingerprinting, DNA testing and home visits by immigration officers. Over the summer, immigration officers started showing up and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-children-parents-reunification-trump-81b20a1e3651337cec14b508f59cc52f">arresting parents</a>.

The average length of stay at government-run shelters for those released in the U.S. was 171 days in July, down from a peak of 217 days in April but well above 37 days in January, when Trump took office.

Here is a look at how high women in ministry have been able to climb in some of the major faith traditions.

In addition to the Episcopal Church, other mainline Protestant denominations in the U.S. have had female leaders.

Karen Georgia Thompson became the first woman to lead the United Church of Christ as its general minister and president.

Among evangelical churches, there are some female pastors. But the largest evangelical denomination, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/southern-baptist-churches-women-pastors-34edfd1578e609c3acb187ab90f0255e">Southern Baptist Convention</a>, has maintained an all-male leadership and bars women from serving as pastors at SBC-affiliated churches.

In the U.S.,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/religion-1675b593ac48cd40fd15304a59ba9e1b">most major Black Christian denominations</a>&nbsp;have no doctrinal bar to ordained women leaders in the way that some denominations do, and women have preached and been ordained in historically Black churches since at least the 19th century.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Commonly known as the Mormon church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is currently going through a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mormon-church-nelson-oaks-president-leadership-90ce246157e27e976af6f57b5e92fc32">leadership transition</a>&nbsp;following the death of its president, Russell M. Nelson.

Every church president since its founding in 1830 has been a man — and the next person to lead the more than 17 million-member, global church will be too. That is in keeping with the faith’s all-male priesthood.

The highest-ranking women in the church oversee organizations that run programs for women and girls. These sit below several layers of leadership groups reserved for only men.

The gender situation within Judaism is markedly different in Israel and the United States, which together account for more than 80% of the world’s Jewish population.

The largest U.S. branches, Reform and Conservative, allow women to be rabbis, while the Orthodox branch does not. In Israel, the Conservative and Reform movements are small, and Orthodox authorities hold a near monopoly on all matters regarding Judaism.

Unlike the Church of England, not all faith traditions, including Islam, have a centralized hierarchical structure, and therefore do not have an equivalent role to that of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Among Islam's some 2 billion adherents around the world, women don’t lead mixed-gender congregational prayers in traditional Muslim settings and the top formal ranks of Islamic authorities have been largely filled with men.

Still, many Muslim women have been occupying&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/africa-religion-islam-14cfe5f40ffa234a7e783dc9a53b98ea">other leadership roles</a>&nbsp;in Islamic spaces in their communities, including as religious scholars, preachers, and, in some cases, religious courts judges.

Different cultural norms or theological and scholarly interpretations can lead to varying views and debates on the permissibility, scope or boundaries of certain roles. Some Muslims have been pushing to expand women’s roles in Islamic spaces and pointing to historic examples from the Islamic heritage.

Women leaders in other decentralized faiths

Instead of a single, centralized figure or body, authority in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/religion-india-new-york-new-york-city-hinduism-c7d710dbdb69dd6de0fabb0f48cdc849">Hinduism</a>&nbsp;is derived from sacred texts, tradition and the teachings of spiritual teachers and monastic leaders.

Structured similarly, authority in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-religion-india-education-thailand-72c19680853e154d2687990c62f8c19c">Buddhism</a>&nbsp;stems from the Buddha’s teachings, those acknowledged as enlightened individuals and community consensus, with scripture serving as guidance rather than a definitive source of all rules.

Both religions have numerous sects and orders with their own leaders and a small number of them are women.

In Hinduism, some examples include Mata Amritanandamayi, a 72-year-old Indian spiritual leader, who hails from a marginalized fishing community and now oversees her own spiritual and charitable organization. Examples can also be found in the Ramakrishna Order, which has a separate branch for female monks who establish and lead their own monasteries around the world.

In Buddhism, more women are pushing for ordination and for elevation to higher titles. Some schools, such as Soto Zen, the largest in Japan and with large numbers of Western practitioners, are more open to female leaders and have several abbesses in their ranks.

Sikhism, which by some counts is the fifth largest religion in the world, is also male-dominated.

None of the 10 Gurus, the human spiritual teachers of the faith, were female. Women are also significantly underrepresented in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, the body that oversees many gurdwaras in India. Bibi Jagir Kaur was the first woman to be elected president of the committee in 1999 and again in 2004.

In many gurdwaras, certain rituals like carrying the palanquin containing the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture, or performing spiritual music (kirtan) at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the holiest Sikh shrine, have remained largely male-dominated.

Those norms are slowly changing in other parts of the world including North America where several women have formed kirtan groups.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Kansas' defense came up with two decisive plays near the goal line, setting up the Jayhawks' go-ahead touchdown with a strip sack and fumble recovery to stop UCF on three consecutive plays from the 1 with less than two minutes remaining to help Kansas beat the Knights 27-20 on Saturday night.

Kansas' Trey Lathan recovered a fumble at the 2 late in the third quarter off a strip sack from Jalen Dye, setting up the go-ahead 2-yard touchdown run from Leshon Williams. Lathan then tackled Cam Fancher on fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 1:47 to secure the victory.

“You are expecting to lose in that situation,” Lathan said. “But when you come out with a W, it’s a great feeling.”

Kansas (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) lost last week’s game to Cincinnati after a goal line battle, ending with a Bearcats' 2-yard touchdown run with 30 seconds remaining.

UCF drove to the Kansas 22 after getting the ball back, but four straight incompletions that included a pass breakup in the end zone by Austin Alexander, ended the Knights' final threat.

Kansas erased an early 14-0 lead from UCF (3-2, 0-2) after Myles Montgomery and the Knights ran all over the Jayhawks in the first half.

Jalon Daniels led the charge for Kansas, throwing for 235 yards on 18-for-26 passing. Williams rushed for 58 yards and three touchdowns for the Jayhawks.

“These guys are growing,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “I think this can be a big one for them to gain some confidence.”

Montgomery rushed for 99 of his 110 yards in the first half, scoring two touchdowns to stake the Knights to an early lead.

UCF’s Tayven Jackson finished with 97 yards on 14-for-23 passing. He left the game after his turnover and came out of the locker room with his left arm in a sling. Coach Scott Frost said X-rays on his shoulder were negative.

Fancher, who started UCF’s opening game against Jacksonville State before leaving with an injury, completed 8 of 14 passes for 79 yards.

The Knights could not find answers in the second half and lost for the second straight game.

“I think we're one of the most talented teams in the Big 12, we've just got to finish,” UCF receiver Duane Thomas Jr. said. “We have to play a complete football game. We can't go out the first two quarters and lay down the next two.”

Part of the shift in the game came from Kansas linebacker Bangally Kamara, who was coming off suspension in the first half after a second-half targeting penalty last week against Cincinnati. Kamara finished with four tackles and provided a boost for the Jayhawks' defense.

Both teams stayed on the field after pregame warmups for a moment of silence to recognize UCF offensive line coach Shawn Clark. Clark passed away Sept. 21. He joined UCF's staff after five years as the head coach at Appalachian State.

Several players for Kansas were fighting through injury, including Williams. The biggest was to kicker Laith Marjan, who made two field goals. His 41-yarder in the third quarter just made it over the crossbar, clipping it before going through.

Leipold admitted Marjan was probably a bit fatigued after he kicked the ensuing kickoff out of bounds following the short field goal.

Kansas: The Jayhawks have been known for their offense throughout the season, but their defense stepped up in a big way to stymie the Knights.

UCF: The Knights will again face quarterback questions after Jackson left the game with an injury. Jackson left last week's game with a shoulder injury. Backup quarterback Jacurri Brown also missed the game with a shoulder injury.

BETHANY, Okla. — Fort Hays State secured a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Southern Nazarene on Saturday. The No. 13 ranked Tigers improved to 7-0-2 overall and 3-0 in the GAC with the win. The Crimson Storm went to 4-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in GAC play.

Southern Nazarene's only goal came in the 29th minute on a penalty kick. However, the Tigers were able to erase the misfortune about four minutes later when Tadhg Walsh leveled the match off assists from Elias Ovelar Semeniuk and Joseph Street. The Tigers were awarded a penalty kick in the 43rd minute, which Ovelar Semeniuk converted to put the Tigers on top. It was his eighth goal of the season. The Tigers dominated the shot count in the first half 10-3.

Fort Hays State went on to win the overall shot battle for the game 17-8. Payton Roehrich had to make two second-half saves to keep the Tigers on top. The Tigers had eight corner kick opportunities compared to none for the Crimson Storm. The match saw 11 cards issued, which included a red on the SNU bench, but FHSU had seven yellows throughout the match.

⚽ No. 13 Tigers men get past Crimson Storm in Oklahoma

WACO, Texas (AP) — Connor Hawkins kicked a 53-yard field goal with 31 seconds left after Jacob Redding's go-ahead 66-yard interception return for a touchdown as Baylor rallied twice in the fourth quarter for a 35-34 victory over Kansas State on Saturday.

Hawkins matched the longest kick of his career after Luis Rodriguez had put the Wildcats in front with a 22-yard field goal with 1:48 remaining. Kansas State (2-4, 1-2 Big 12) had to settle for the kick after having a first down at the Baylor 2-yard line.

Rodriguez had a chance for a game-winner from 56 yards, but 6-foot-4 defensive end Cooper Lanz blocked it with 2 seconds to go. The Bears (4-2, 2-1) held on two weeks after losing to Arizona State on a game-ending field goal in their previous home game.

“It’s a roller coaster for sure, an emotional roller coaster,” Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson said. “I remember sitting in here a couple of weeks ago and saying that I know one thing for sure, we’re going to fight to the very end. Because of that, we put ourselves in a position to win.”

Michael Trigg had career highs with eight catches for 155 yards and sparked Baylor's rally from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter with a 42-yard grab a play before making a spectacular one-handed catch while getting one foot down on the sideline, gaining another 29 yards.

Robertson's 11-yard scoring pass to Bryson Washington came on the next play, and Robertson’s 2-point conversion run cut Baylor's deficit to 31-25.

Avery Johnson, who threw for 339 yards and two TDs and ran for a score, had kept a potential clock-killing drive alive with two third-down conversions but he threw into traffic on first down in Baylor territory with the six-point lead.

Redding picked off the pass, ran left up the sideline and cut back inside with the speedy Johnson pursuing to finish off the score untouched. Hawkins' PAT kick put Baylor ahead 32-31 with less than five minutes to go.

“I’d be lying if I said a couple of years ago that I’d be in this position,” Redding said. “I was running, I was like, ‘I can’t believe this is happening.’ And then I scored and I was like, ‘No flags?’ This is a dream come true.”

Johnson's 12-yard scoring pass to Jayce Brown broke a 17-17 halftime tie, and the Wildcats went up two touchdowns on Dylan Edwards' 5-yard run late in the third quarter.

“We did things well enough to win, but we didn’t earn the win,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said. “That’s why we’re walking out of here with a one-point loss and a lot of woulda, shoulda, couldas.”

Kansas State: It's the third time this season the Wildcats have led or been tied in the fourth quarter of a loss. They've had a one-score margin a nation-leading five times in six games. Three of the losses are by three points or fewer.

Baylor: Robertson had two TD tosses, ending his streak of consecutive games with at least three scoring passes at five. It was the longest since Kyler Murray had eight in a row with Oklahoma in 2018. His 345 yards passing were almost right on his nation-leading average.

The temperature approach 90 degrees late in the game on the first Saturday in October in Texas. It was on Klieman's mind. “We played a lot of guys because we had guys injured. Plus, it was hot,” the coach said.

Besides the one-handed grab, Trigg had a leaping catch over the middle in the first half on a drive that appeared to end with him making another athletic catch in the back of the end zone. It was overturned on review, apparently because he didn't have full control. “We knew we had a mismatch nightmare on the kid,” Klieman said.

Trump retreated after 35 days as intensifying delays at the nation’s airports and another missed payday for hundreds of thousands of federal workers brought new urgency to efforts to resolve the standoff.

The government shut down for three days as Democrats insisted that any budget measure come with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-donald-trump-immigration-bills-north-america-532fcd6149a34d488723517156c34a55">protections for young immigrants</a>&nbsp;known as “Dreamers.” Trump refused to negotiate until the government reopened, and the weekend shutdown ended after McConnell, then the Senate majority leader, promised a vote on the issue.

Democrats, led by Schumer, tried to lay blame on Trump. But Republicans said that it was Democrats who “caved” in the end.

The hard-right tea party faction of House Republicans, urged on by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/united-states-government-general-news-9f568e68401b4695ad8290e89169d9c2">shut the government down for 16 days</a>&nbsp;as they demanded that language to block implementation of President Barack Obama’s signature health care law be added to a spending bill.

The conflict escalated when House Republicans also blocked the needed approval for raising the amount of money the Treasury can borrow to pay U.S. bills, raising the specter of a catastrophic default. Obama, a Democrat, vowed repeatedly not to pay a “ransom” to get Congress to pass normally routine legislation.

Bipartisan negotiations in the Senate finally ended the shutdown, and Republicans did not win any major concessions on health care. “We fought the good fight. We just didn’t win,” then-House Speaker John Boehner conceded.

Intent on slashing the budget, Republicans led by then-Speaker Newt Gingrich forced a three-week shutdown from December 1995 to January 1996 in a bid to coerce President Bill Clinton to sign onto a balanced budget agreement. Republicans were saddled with the blame, and Clinton, a Democrat, was reelected that November.

Under Presidents Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, and Ronald Reagan, a Republican, there were short shutdowns almost every year. The longest was in 1978, for 17 days.

A series of legal opinions issued in 1980 and 1981 made shutdowns more impactful. Then-Attorney General Benjamin Civiletti determined that failure to pass new spending bills required government functioning to shut down in whole or in part. Earlier “shutdowns” did not always entail an actual stop to government functioning and often were simply funding gaps will little real-world effect.

Fort Hays State Football hits the road this week for a contest at Missouri Southern. The RV/No. 21 ranked Tigers enter the contest at 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA, while the Lions are 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

Fort Hays State holds a 20-14-1 advantage in the all-time series with Missouri Southern. The Tigers have won 10 of the last 11 meetings and hold a 12-4 advantage against the Lions since joining the MIAA back in 2006. Head coach Chris Brown is 10-1 against the Lions while leading the Tigers.

Fort Hays State won last year's meeting by a score of 53-9 in Hays. The 44-point win margin was the largest in the all-time series with Missouri Southern. The Tigers have had success generating points against the Lions in the last 13 meetings, averaging 40.2 points per game in that span. The Tigers have won their last six meetings with the Lions in Joplin going back to 2009.

The Tigers are currently among a four-way cluster for third place in the MIAA standings at 2-1. Northwest Missouri State (3-0) and Central Missouri (2-0) are the only two teams remaining without a loss in MIAA play. Missouri Southern is among four teams in the MIAA looking for their first conference win of the season.

Fort Hays State scored at least 26 points in all three of its wins this season, but less than 20 in its two losses. The Tigers are still searching for their first game of 400 or more yards of total offense this season, with 396 as their season high at Pittsburg State.

The Fort Hays State defense is led by linebacker John Johnson, who leads the team and ranks third in the MIAA in tackles with 49. He has been the MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week twice this season, the latest occurring this week after a career-high 16 tackles against Missouri Western last week. He has led the team in tackles in four of the five games and reached double figures in a game three times this season.

Gaven Haselhorst leads the Tigers in sacks with 3.0 and ranks second in the MIAA, only 0.5 sacks behind the lead. Jakolbi Wilson leads the Tigers in tackles for loss (4.5), while Michael Polley has two of the team's four interceptions this season.

Quarterback Caleb Heavner has 921 passing yards and a team-best 180 yards rushing. He is averaging 220.2 yards of total offense per game. Ryan Allen is his top receiving target with 19 catches for 202 yards so far this year.
