Frances Mae Boxberger, 85, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, October 2, 2020, at the Main Street Manor in Russell.

Frances was born on January 08, 1935, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of William F. and Ida Caroline (Nuss) Boxberger.  She grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1953. After high school, Frances graduated from Ft. Hays State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.  She lived her entire life in Russell and worked as a legal secretary for Woelk, Cully, and Cole Law Firm in Russell.  Her interests included visiting with friends and family, enjoying chocolate chip cookies, and membership at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell.  

Surviving family includes her nephew Patrick Combs and wife Anne-Marie, their adult children John Patrick and Diana Frances, and brother in-law Ronald H. Combs all of Georgetown, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Ida, brother, Paul William, sister Mary Jane Combs, nephew Michael Scott Combs and an infant sister.

The family will arrange a private burial and service.  A public memorial service may take place at a later date.  Memorials can be sent to the mortuary and given to Main Street Manor Nursing Care Team to honor the outstanding care and concern given to Frances and her family.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral and memorial service arrangements.

Dorothy M. Hopper, 98, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, October 02, 2020, at the Main Street Manor in Russell.

Dorothy was born on September 21, 1922, in Dorrance, Kansas, the daughter of William G. and Amelia (Woelk) Teppe.  She was raised on the family farm in Dorrance and graduated from Dorrance High School in the class of 1940.  After high school she attended Ft. Hays State University.  She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to James David Hopper, Jr. on February 16, 1943, in Hays, Kansas.  From this union Dorothy and James were blessed with 6 children James III, William, Becky, Tom, Mike and Tim.  With 6 children to raise, Dorothy worked very hard as a homemaker, wife and mother.  Dorothy loved to travel and spend time with her family, she especially enjoyed spending time with her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include her daughter Becky Vogt and sons Tom Hopper and wife Carol, Mike Hopper and wife Beth and Tim Hopper and wife Laura, 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband James who passed away on April 09, 2016, and sons James D. Hopper III and Bill Zack Hopper.

A graveside service to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, October 07, 2020, at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell, Kansas.  Visitation will be from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Tuesday, October 06, 2020, at the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Kirwin resident Helen E. Miller Cannon passed away Saturday, 
October 3, 2020, at the Phillips County Hospital, Phillipsburg, at the 
age of 97.

She was born June 18, 1923, in Sayre, Oklahoma, the daughter of Edgar V. and Merle Elizabeth (Addis) McCamon.

Survivors include her daughter Betty Still and husband Robert of 
rural Kirwin, KS; her son Ray Miller and wife Lorene of Claremore, OK; 5
 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; a 
brother Bill McCamon and wife Joan of Amarillot, TX; and a sister Sue 
Weaver and husband Joe of Garden City, KS.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at the
 Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Michael 
Ricci-Roberts officiating.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 9, 2020 in 
the Berlin Cemetery, Berlin, OK.&nbsp; Arrangements for graveside services 
will be by the Martin-Dugger Funeral Home in Elk City, OK.

Wilda Maxine Smith, 96, died October 3,
 2020 at Hays Medical Center.&nbsp; She was born May 17, 1924 to Corwin and 
Mable (Roberts) Smith on a farm in Gove County, Kansas, one of 10&nbsp; children.&nbsp; 

During WWII, though she had just graduated from high school 
and had no teacher training, she was pressed into teaching, including 
one year in the one-room school where she had been a student.&nbsp; After the
 war, Wilda completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history at 
Fort Hays Kansas State College.&nbsp; Her master’s thesis was “The Struggle 
for Woman Suffrage in Kansas."&nbsp; She taught history at Hays High School 
from 1953-1957.&nbsp; Her Ph.D. in history was earned at the University of 
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.&nbsp; Wilda taught history at Fort Hays State 
University for 26 years, serving as chairperson of the History 
Department for five years.

Wilda served on the Kansas Committee 
for the Humanities, the Coordinating Council of the National Women’s 
Studies Association, the Executive Committee of the Kansas Council for 
Social Studies, and the Board of Directors of the Kansas State 
Historical Society.

The biography of a native Kansan, The 
Wars of Peggy Hull: The Life and Times of a War Correspondent, which she
 co-authored with Eleanor Bogart, received the C.L. Sonnichhsen Book 
Award from Texas Western Press.

Wilda was preceded in death by her 
parents, long time companion Eleanor Bogart, sister Vivian Beougher and 
brothers Marion, Raymond, Kenneth, Carl, Francis, Don, Darrell and 
Corwin, Jr.&nbsp; She is survived by a sister-in-law, Marita Smith of 
Broomfield, CO, Norma and Quentin Bogart, Mesa, AZ, and numerous nieces 
and nephews.

Because of the coronavirus, there will be a family graveside service.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to Fort Hays State University.

Lonnie F. Morgan, age 73, of Hays, KS passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at HaysMed – Hays.

He was born July 31, 1947 in La Crosse, 
KS to Friend E. and Velma (Scheuerman) Morgan.&nbsp; He grew up in Alexander,
 KS and graduated from Alexander High School in 1965 then attended Hutch 
Junior College on a basketball scholarship.

Lonnie’s hobbies included spending time
 with his sons and grandkids, together with hunting, fishing, golfing, 
playing softball and bowling.

He owned and operated Morgan Appliance Service.&nbsp; He organized bus trips to Grand Island, NE for horse races for 36 years.

Lonnie met and married Therese M. Klaus on May 8, 1982 in Hays, KS.

He is survived by his wife, Therese. 
Sons:&nbsp; Steven (Jolene) Morgan of LaCrosse; Heath (Michelle) Morgan of 
Lacrosse; Brothers: Larry Morgan of Alexander; Lance ‘Bub’ (Gloria)

grandchildren: Taylor, Hunter, and Madison, together with numerous

Lonnie F. Morgan

Doyle Leon Post passed away on October 2, 2020 at the Redbud Village in 
Plainville, KS, at the age of 94. He was born on July 3, 1926 in 
Woodston, KS to James Owen and Malena Afi (Gregory) Post. Doyle married 
Lauretta Weldon on June 30, 1946 in Natoma, KS. They were blessed with 
three children: Cecelia, Linda, and Gary. Lauretta passed away in 1967 
and on August 12, 1977, Doyle married Ruth Adeline Swindler in Russell, 
KS to which 7 step-children were added to his family. Doyle and Ruth 
were together until she passed away in 2008.


Doyle grew up in Woodston and graduated from Woodston High School 
with the Class of 1944. He started off farming but then moved to 
Plainville and worked at a filling station where he taught himself how 
to work on cars. He then owned and operated Post Repair and Service from
 1971 to 1996. His career ended with 15 years at Farm Implement where he
 continued small engine repair until he was 88 years old. Doyle was a 
member of the Odd Fellow Lodge.


A hardworking man, Doyle could always be found working on something.
 While never letting anything stand in his way, he strived for 
perfection in all that he did, and knew how to have fun and enjoy life 
along the way. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will serve as 
an inspiration to those who knew him… always do what you love, and 
always love what you do.


Doyle is survived by his daughters, Cecelia Anissy of Olathe, KS and
 Linda Gilbert of Plainville; son, Gary L. Post of Wichita; brothers, 
Edson Post and wife Madonna of Wichita and Charles Post and wife Patti 
of Concordia, KS; step-children, Tom Hodges, Terry Hodges, Dean Poe, 
Cheryl Baldwin, Sandy Odle, Tammy Robertson, and Angel Fasulo; two 
grandchildren, Tirazheh Anissy and Tanya Dunn; and three 
great-grandchildren, Ethan Anissy, and Kian &amp; Kylar Lamer.


Preceding Doyle in death are his parents, James and Malena Post; 
wives, Lauretta and Ruth; brothers, James, Emery, and Delmar Post, and 
an infant brother; sister, Vola Collins; grandson, Darren Gilbert; and 
sons-in-law, Jack Gilbert and Nasser Anissy.


A graveside service and interment will be held on Tuesday, October 
6, 2020, at 2:00 P.M. at the Plainville Cemetery in Plainville, KS. 
Visitation will be Monday, 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home
 in Plainville.

Mary Murphy, 74, passed away September 28, 2020, at Wellstar Cobb 
Hospice, Smyrna, Ga. She was born on April 4, 1946, at Hoisington, to 
Fidel and Isebell (Yvarra) Torrez. She married Thomas Michael Murphy 
October 28, 1968, at Fairbury, Neb.&nbsp; He died October 17, 2016.

A current resident of Smyrna, Ga., Mary previously lived in Great 
Bend for many years. Mary was a long time Great Bend Public Library 
employee, serving as the children's director, later working for 
Sunflower Early Education Center and CKMC in Great Bend, as well as 
Wellstar Cobb Hospice in Georgia. She was a member of Prince of Peace 
Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Survivors include, a son, Chad Murphy and wife Angela of Sterling; 
and son in law, Chris Dickson of Smyrna, Ga.; four grandchildren, 
Brittany Williams, Claire Dickson, Michael Murphy, and Caleb Murphy; and
 four great grandchildren, Kami Williams, Treacyn Williams, Anaceliya 
Murphy, and Gentry Murphy. She was preceded in death by her parents; her
 husband, Thomas Michael Murphy; and a daughter, Carrie Dickson.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, 
October 8, 2020 at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. 
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 9, 
2020, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Don 
Bedore presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.

Alice (Geist) Fisher, 87, Hays, died Friday, October 2, 2020 at HaysMed.

She was born April 1, 1933 in Ellis, 
the daughter of Nick and Lidwina (Kuhn) Geist.&nbsp; On May 3, 1955 she was 
united in marriage to Cyril Fisher at St. Joseph Church in Hays, and 
they celebrated 65 years of marriage.&nbsp; She worked at St. Anthony 
Hospital, Duckwalls, and Dillons before moving to Phillipsburg in 
December 1958, where she and Cyril owned and operated C &amp; A 
Floor Covering Store.&nbsp; They worked side-by-side until their retirement 
in November 1995.&nbsp; &nbsp;In February 2003, they moved back to Hays to a 
retirement home.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband Cyril of 
Hays, a sister; Albertina Rohleder and husband Val of Abilene, and many 
loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, a brother; Alfred Geist, and three sisters; Irene Windholz,

Norton resident Elden Dale Sprague was born on February 24, 1927 to 
Earl and Hattie (Williamson) Sprague in Norton County, KS.&nbsp; He passed 
away at the Andbe Home in Norton on September 30, 2020, at the age of 
93.

&nbsp;He attended schools in Norton County and graduated from Almena High 
School.&nbsp; Elden joined the Navy on March 6, 1945 and remained until July 
8, 1946—the close of World War II.&nbsp; After his discharge, he attended 
Radio School in Texas.&nbsp; He then opened a radio and TV repair shop in 
Almena.&nbsp;

He married Lila Troutner on February 1, 1962.&nbsp; They later divorced.&nbsp; In 1967, he married Melba Farrand.&nbsp; They divorced in 1983.

Following the close of his repair shop, he opened a craft shop that 
he operated for many years in Almena and Norton.&nbsp; He was also involved 
with Boy Scouts, where he was a scout leader.&nbsp; He enjoyed building and 
flying model airplanes.&nbsp; He was an extremely talented painter.&nbsp; He 
painted beautiful landscapes on any object that you could think of, from
 milk cans to saw blades, to kitchen knives and bricks.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Hattie Sprague and a brother Arlo.

Elden is survived by his three brothers, Olin of Norton, KS, Gary of 
DeKalb, IL, Lynn of Redfield, AR; a sister, June Keiswetter of Norton, 
KS; and many nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 5, at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Almena, with Pastor Ron Martin officiating.

Mr. Sprague will lie in state from Noon until 9 p.m. Sunday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Don R. Younger, age 71, of Ellis, 
Kansas passed away October 1, 2020 at Hays Medical Center. Don was born 
April 9, 1949 in Hays, Kansas to Michael and Seraphine (Bieker) Younger.
 He graduated in 1967 from Ellis High School. On July 8, 1967 he married
 Rita (Boos) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. They were married 
for 53 years.

Don was a Master Electrician and owned 
Don’s Electric &amp; Rewind in Ellis over 30 years. He was a long-time 
member of the Ellis Golf Club, a saxophonist as a member of the Younger 
Band and other various bands without being able to read a note. Don and 
Rita also farmed part-time for over 45 years on the family farm south of
 Ellis, and it was one of his greatest joys.&nbsp; He also enjoyed playing 
cards, playing golf and family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife Rita of 
Ellis; three sons, Donnie (Wanda) Younger, Bobby (Toni) Younger and 
Aaron (Jennifer) Younger all of Ellis; a sister, Lillian Reynolds of 
Sunrise Beach, Missouri; grandsons, Gage, Landon,&nbsp;Bryce, Cale and Mason 
Younger, granddaughter Aspen Younger along with his loving and faithful 
pet German Shepard, Mac.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, brothers, Walter, John, Bill, Michael and Robert as well as 
sisters, Evelyn, Edna and Viola.

Howard Michael “Mike” Boys, 72, passed away June 4, 2020, at Via 
Christi St. Francis, Wichita. He was born on April 15, 1948,at 
Shelbyville, Ill to Richard and Nixie (Smith) Boys. He married Jolene 
Sellens on March 8, 1969, at Hoisington. She survives.

A current Great Bend resident, Mike was an insurance agent for 25 
years. He was a graduate of Hoisington High School and attended 
Pittsburgh State University.

Survivors include, his wife, Jolene Boys of the home; two sons, 
Gregory Boys of Great Bend, and Christopher Boys and wife Dalila of 
Dodge City; two sisters, Sandra Daughtery and husband Larry of Russell, 
and Terry Perry and husband Rick of Benton; and three grandchildren,

was born November 30, 1931, in Pawnee Rock, Kansas, the daughter of 
William and Ina (Fry) Dooling. Betty attended Larned High School.

She was married to Charles Edward Walker from 1951 to 1971. She then 
married Arthur F. Schneweis on November 19, 1971, in St. John, Kansas.

Betty and her husband Art were both self employed telephone 
contractors. They were both very patriotic and would always be at the 
veteran’s services, where she would often assist with the playing of 
taps.

Betty was a member of the Church of Christ in Great Bend. For a time 
she lived in Texas where she was a member of the Horticulture Club and 
would judge floral shows. She was very artistic and a good seamstress. 
Betty was also an avid animal lover, she loved all animals and 
especially doted on her fur babies.

Survivors include; her husband of nearly 49 years, Arthur F. 
Schneweis; son, Bruce Walker; daughters, Pat Anderson and husband Andy, 
and Lynnda Kirbow and husband Jeff; and three great grandchildren, 
Nathan, Heaven, and Brent.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Walker; 
infant son, Dereck John Walker, and granddaughter, Krystle Leigh.

KANSAS CITY (AP)—October is prime time for flu vaccinations, and the U.S. and Europe are gearing up for what experts hope is high demand as countries seek to avoid a “twindemic” with COVID-19.

“There’s considerable concern as we enter the fall and winter months and into the flu season that we’ll have that dreaded overlap” of flu and the coronavirus, Dr. Anthony Fauci of the U.S. National Institutes of Health said Thursday. He got his own flu shot earlier this week.

A record number of flu vaccine doses are on the way, between 194 million and 198 million for the U.S. alone -- seemingly plenty considering last year just under half of adults got vaccinated and there usually are leftovers.

Still, there’s no way to know how many will seek shots this year and some people occasionally are finding drugstores or clinics temporarily out of stock.

Be patient: Flu vaccine ships gradually. Less than half has been distributed so far, and the CDC and manufacturers say more is in transit.

“This year I think everyone is wanting to get their vaccine and maybe wanting it earlier than usual,” Dr. Daniel Jernigan of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told The Associated Press. “If you’re not able to get your vaccination now, don’t get frustrated” but keep trying.

Pharmaceutical giant Sanofi Pasteur, which is supplying nearly 250 million doses worldwide including 80 million for the U.S., says it has shipments staggered into November.

Vaccine maker Seqirus is exploring if it could squeeze out “a limited number of additional doses” to meet high demand, said spokeswoman Polina Miklush.

Brewing flu vaccine is time-consuming. Once production ends for the year, countries can’t simply order more -- making for a stressful balancing act as they guess how many people will roll up their sleeves.

Germany usually buys 18 million to 19 million doses, and this year ordered more. As German Health Minister Jens Spahn put it: “If we manage, together, to get the flu vaccination rate so high that all 26 million doses are actually used, then I’d be a very happy health minister.”

Spain purchased extra doses in hopes of vaccinating far more older adults and pregnant women than usual, along with key workers in health facilities and nursing homes.

In contrast, Poland, which last year had 100,000 doses go unused, didn’t anticipate this fall’s high demand and is seeking more.

The good news: The same precautions that help stop spread of the coronavirus -- wearing masks, avoiding crowds, washing your hands and keeping your distance -- can help block influenza, too.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/16c5e8f7bcdf06feee506e8836d82e19">Winter just ended in the Southern Hemisphere</a>&nbsp;and countries like South Africa, Australia, Argentina and Chile diagnosed hardly any flu thanks to COVID-19 restrictions combined with a big push for influenza vaccinations.

With the coronavirus still circulating and cold weather coming just as more schools and businesses reopen, there’s no guarantee that countries in the Northern Hemisphere will be as lucky with flu.

“How much flu, we don’t know -- but there will be flu,” predicted Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

A flu vaccine only protects against influenza, not the coronavirus. And while its effectiveness varies from year to year, people vaccinated against flu don’t get as sick, avoiding pneumonia, hospitalization and death, Schaffner said.

The CDC estimated that last year the flu hospitalized 400,000 Americans and killed 22,000.

Adding flu to the toll of COVID-19 -- which has killed more than 1 million people worldwide including more than 206,000 Americans -- would further strain hospitals. Both flu and the coronavirus have similar symptoms and even if they’re mild, Schaffner warned of confusion as people seek testing to learn which illness they have and if anyone they’ve been around needs to quarantine.

“Take flu out of the equation this fall,” Jernigan advised.

Who needs flu vaccine? The U.S. recommends it for everyone starting at 6 months of age. But flu is most dangerous for people over age 65, young children, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions such as heart disease, asthma, even diabetes.

Most Americans with insurance can get it without a co-pay, and there are different kinds to choose from: Regular shots, two types of shots that aim to give older adults a little extra protection, and a nasal spray.

The CDC doesn’t recommend one over another. If you can’t find your preferred type, “we ask people not to shop around and wait forever,” Jernigan said. “The best vaccine to get is the vaccine that’s available to you.”

The CDC this year wants states to increase flu vaccinations among Blacks and Hispanics, who are less likely to get a shot than whites and also are at extra risk from COVID-19. Some states also are holding drive-thru flu vaccinations and outdoor clinics to avoid crowds.

And at the same time they get immunized against flu, older adults and people with chronic illnesses also should ask about getting a vaccine against a type of pneumonia that is a frequent complication, U.S. officials urged.

Less than half has been distributed so far, and the CDC and manufacturers say more is in transit.“This year I think everyone is wanting to get their vaccine and maybe wanting it earlier than usual,” Dr. Daniel Jernigan of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told The Associated Press. “If you’re not able to get your vaccination now, don’t get frustrated” but keep trying.Pharmaceutical giant Sanofi Pasteur, which is supplying nearly 250 million doses worldwide including 80 million for the U.S., says it has shipments staggered into November.Vaccine maker Seqirus is exploring if it could squeeze out “a limited number of additional doses” to meet high demand, said spokeswoman Polina Miklush.Brewing flu vaccine is time-consuming. What is the secret to staying positive? Staying positive when times are tough is much easier said than done.&nbsp; Living a healthy lifestyle is very important but maintaining a positive attitude in today’s world is even more important.

On Wednesday, October 7, at 12:10 p.m., Berny Unruh, extension agent, will be presenting “I’m&nbsp;Positive, I’m OK” at the Cottonwood Extension Office, 601 Main, in Hays.

Come spend your lunch hour with us as we outline ideas to keep a positive outlook on life. 

The program will be concluded by 12:50 p.m. so participants can return to work. The program will be held in the large meeting room at the back of the Extension office and social distancing will be practiced.

Research has shown that optimism improves not only mental well-being but also physical health and that resilience and optimism can be associated with greater longevity. 

There are many ways to stay keep a positive outlook and the first one is to be around positive people and those that support you.&nbsp; That has been more difficult during the last six months but there are many ways to connect with people when you cannot physically be with them.

Hopefully, this lesson will inspire you to make a checklist of the things that will help you live a more positive and successful life.

If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

Blue-green algae warning issued for Phillips Co. lake

Alfred “Bud” Clarence Lager died on October 1, 2020 at the Sheridan 
County Long Term Care in Hoxie, KS. Bud was born on August 24, 1927, in 
Hays, KS, to Fred and Irene (Comeau) Lager. The family grew up on a farm
 north of Grinnell, KS. Bud was the oldest of 6 children.  He met Bonita
 Heim at a local dance and they were married on August 23, 1950.  
Together they raised 4 children on a dairy farm north of Grinnell, KS, 
before moving into Grinnell in 1997. 


Bud loved the land and enjoyed the beauty of seeing the cycle of life in
 the seasons.  Whether on a tractor, combine, or in the barn milking 
cows, Bud knew the gift of hard work and the dedication it takes to 
provide for a family. He loved playing cards, loved going to polka 
dances with Bonnie, loved visiting with family and neighbors, attending 
farm auctions and learning the latest about the farming and the dairy 
industry.


Bud was dedicated to his faith and was a member of the Knights of 
Columbus for 75 years. Rarely did he miss Mass on Sunday and he modeled 
for his children a love for the Church. 


Bud is survived by sons, Ron (Linda), of Grinnell, KS, Father John, of 
Denver, CO, and Mark ,of Ventura, CA; his sisters, Rose (†Willard) 
Hughes, of Oakley, KS, Pat (†Martin) Hampel, of Kingman, KS, and Janet 
(Steve) Kaiser, of Quinter, KS; sister in law Susan (†Edwin) of Yukon, 
OK; grandchildren, Julie (Chris) Ribardo, of Bryan, TX, Brenda, of Hays,
 KS, Nate (Kelly), of  Wichita, KS, Father Brian, of Hays, KS, Kevin 
(Melanie), of Seguin, KS, Marty (Abbie), of Colby, KS, and Austin, of 
Atchison, KS, and 16 great grandchildren. 


He was preceded in death by, his wife Bonnie who died this past March; 
his daughter Shirley Pianalto (†Joe) and granddaughters, Annie and 
Jennie; infant sons Kevin, Michael, and Joseph; granddaughter-in-law 
Hannah Lager and infant son Matthias Lager, and his brother Leroy.

Alfred Clarence 'Bud' Lager

Alvin Joseph Schrandt passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2020 in his 
home at the age of 91, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 
11, 1929 to William and Catherine (Adam) Schrandt in Plainville, Kansas.
 He was united in marriage to Betty (Camerer) Schrandt on May 5, 1956 at
 the Sacred Heart Church in Plainville. They were blessed with a 
daughter, Regina and later fostered ten other children.


Alvin spent his life in the Plainville area. Following the 8th grade
 he went to work on the family farm and didn’t stop until his health no 
longer allowed him to put in the long hours and strenuous labors the 
fields and livestock required. He was awarded in the early 2000’s the 
Century Farm Award. He worked hard and enjoyed the company of his family
 to assist in the jobs on the farm. Alvin never missed an opportunity 
for his grandkids, or any kids for that matter, to help him tend to the 
fields or livestock. He was a father figure to not only his child and 
the kids he and Betty fostered, but even to his nieces, nephews, 
grandkids, and people outside of the family. Alvin was proud to be 
involved in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of
 Columbus, and a part of the Farm Bureau. 


It has been said, “Kindness is like a seed that when cultivated will
 continue to grow and grow.”  Alvin was a kind and loving man who lived

Alvin is survived by his daughter, Regina (Dave) Riley of 
Plainville; sisters, Grace McManus of Lincoln, NE, Edna Stone of 
Phoenix, AZ, Marcella McFadden of CA and Willie Reeves of Plainville, 
KS; nine-grandchildren, K.C. Kraushaar, Nicole Wise, Lacy Kraushaar, 
Amanda Fry, Joseph Kraushaar, Rochelle Fredrick, Matthew Riley, Michael 
Riley, and Mark Riley; two foster children, Bryan (Machelle) Varney of 
IA and Linda (Doyle) Adams of MO; twenty great-grandchildren, two 
great-great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.


He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Catherine 
Schrandt; wife, Betty Schrandt; siblings, Edwin Schrandt and Lucille 
Leikam; a grandchild, Rebecca Riley and two great-grandchildren, Phoenix
 Wise and Cecilia Graf.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2020
 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville at 10:30 AM. 
Visitation will be held on Wednesday 1:00 PM until 4:30 PM at the 
funeral home and then will be moved to the Church from 6:00 PM until 
8:00 PM with a Vigil Service and Rosary at 7:00 PM.


Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the 
Sacred Heart Catholic School and may be sent in care of Plumer-Overlease
 Funeral Home, 320 SW 2nd St, Plainville, KS 67663.

 </figure>Alvin Joseph Schrandt passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2020 in his 
home at the age of 91, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 
11, 1929 to William and Catherine (Adam) Schrandt in Plainville, Kansas.
 He was united in marriage to Betty (Camerer) Schrandt on May 5, 1956 at
 the Sacred Heart Church in Plainville. They were blessed with a 
daughter, Regina and later fostered ten other children.
Alvin spent his life in the Plainville area. Following the 8th grade
 he went to work on the family farm and didn’t stop until his health no 
longer allowed him to put in the long hours and strenuous labors the 
fields and livestock required. He was awarded in the early 2000’s the 
Century Farm Award. He worked hard and enjoyed the company of his family
 to assist in the jobs on the farm. Alvin never missed an opportunity 
for his grandkids, or any kids for that matter, to help him tend to the 
fields or livestock. He was a father figure to not only his child and 
the kids he and Betty fostered, but even to his nieces, nephews, 
grandkids, and people outside of the family. Alvin was proud to be 
involved in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of
 Columbus, and a part of the Farm Bureau. 
It has been said, “Kindness is like a seed that when cultivated will
 continue to grow and grow.” Alvin was a kind and loving man who lived 
to serve his family, friends, and neighbors. He not only tended the

Alvin Joseph Schrandt

A proposed merger of two northeast Kansas electric cooperatives has been rejected by coop members.

The Boards of Trustees for Nemaha-Marshall Electric Cooperative Association in Axtell and Doniphan Electric Cooperative Association in Troy had unanimously approved taking the proposed consolidation to their members. Kansas law requires that each cooperative receive at least two-thirds approval by members.

The vote was held on October 1st after extensive review of the proposal during special meetings with members of both electric cooperatives. Members of the Nemaha-Marshall Coop and the Doniphan Electric Coop voted both in person and by mail.

“We are disappointed with the outcome. The Boards of Trustees have worked diligently on this issue. However, these are member owned and member driven electric cooperatives. The members have spoken with this vote,” Daniel O’Brien, General Manager for the Doniphan Electric Cooperative, said in a written statement released by the coop.

“Our organization appreciates the work by both Boards of Trustees, the consultants and key employees who have worked to develop this proposal,” Kathleen O’Brien, General Manager for the Nemaha-Marshall Coop said in a written statement&nbsp;“Going forward, we will continue to provide our members with best-in-class electric service."

The Hays school board at its meeting Monday approved the&nbsp; purchase of property on Fifth Street to expand parking next to its transportation department building.

By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostThe Hays school board at its meeting Monday approved the&nbsp; purchase of property on Fifth Street to expand parking next to its transportation department building.The cost of the property is $9,500.The school district has owned three-quarters of the lot for many years, but there is a sliver the district did not own, Superintendent Ron Wilson told the board.<h2>Washington school</h2>The board approved Oct. 26 as the hearing date for the closure of Washington School.The school board has entered into a contract with Overland Property Group to purchase the school for $500,000. The developer plans to remodel the school into apartments.Early Childhood Connections had been located in the school, but the program was moved to its new location on 13th Street last fall. The Learning Center has been temporarily located in that building. It will move to a temporary location next semester.The district hopes to move the Learning Center into a remodeled space at Rockwell Administration Center within the next year.School board member Allen Park expressed several concerns about the sale. Park was the principal of Washington when it was an elementary school.&nbsp;He asked for a list of investors in the Overland Property Group project. He said he wanted time to review any information presented at the hearing in October before the board votes on the sale.
