Howard W. Linenberger, 84, Parker, Colorado, died Sunday, October 4, 2020, at his home.

He was born January 1, 1936, in 
Benkelman, Nebraska the son of Alfred and Angela (Reiman) Linenberger.&nbsp; 
On January 28, 1956, he was united in marriage to Shirley Befort, and 
they celebrated 64 years of marriage.&nbsp; From 1953 to 1956 he served in 
the Army National Guard.&nbsp; In 1961, he moved to Denver, Colorado, where he 
owned his own business, Denver Reconditioning.&nbsp; He then went to work for
 Ford Truck Sales as the body shop foreman.

Survivors include his wife Shirley, of 
the home in Parker, CO, a son; Howard W. Linenberger, Jr. and wife 
Jeannie of Post Falls, ID, a daughter; Sharon Christy and husband Rob of
 Elizabeth, CO, his twin brother; Harold Linenberger of Hays, four 
grandchildren; Vanessa Strouse and husband Rick, Amanda Zoller, 
Christina McElwain and husband Tony, and Mark Zoller, Jr. and fiancé 
Alyssa, and nine great grandchildren; Sammy Linenberger, Daniel Strouse,
 Emma Zoller, Hunter Zoller, Zakery McElwain, Athena McElwain, Mark 
Zoller III, Garrett Zoller, and Ryker Zoller.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother; Alfred “Berdal” Linenberger.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Friday, October 9, 2020 at The Basilica of St. Fidelis in 
Victoria, with Fr. Jim Moster officiating.&nbsp; Burial with military honors 
by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will follow in St. Fidelis 
Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Thursday at 
Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until 10:00 on Friday
 at The Basilica.&nbsp; A vigil service will be at 6:00 pm on Thursday at the
 funeral home.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to the Cancer Council of Ellis

The<a href="https://www.alz.org/"> Alzheimer's Association's</a> Walk to End Alzheimer's is happening in Hays on Saturday, October 10 and in Victoria on Saturday, October 17.

 We are walking everywhere — on city sidewalks, hiking trails, paths, and treadmills to honor those we love who are currently battling Alzheimer’s, the 6th leading cause of death in America.

 We are raising money toward finding a cure, so others don’t have to face the same heartbreak as my family and many others have. I encourage everyone to get out and walk on October 10th and October 17th, wear purple and fundraise so that someday we will be celebrating the first survivor of Alzheimer’s.

Jacy Joseph Braun, age 22, of Victoria, Kansas, died Friday, October 2, 2020, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born April 27, 1998, in Russell, Kansas, to Terry Joseph and Krista Dawn (Rathbun) Braun.&nbsp; He was engaged to Jessica Mallory.

He was a mechanic at Dreiling Field Service and had worked at Lang Diesel.&nbsp; He grew up in Victoria and was a 2016 graduate of Victoria High School, and a graduate of North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit, Kansas.&nbsp; He enjoyed hunting, trapping,

softball, golfing, farming, raising cattle and his pickup.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Vincent, Kansas and a member of the Victoria/Ellis County Fire Department.&nbsp; He was an organ donor to “extend others’ lives."

Frances Alberta (Holl) Nuss, 97 of Russell, Kansas, died on October 3, 2020, at the Main Street Manor in Russell, Kansas.

Frances was born on the family farm on February 6, 1923, in Russell County, Kansas, the daughter of Levi and Caroline (Dumler) Holl.  She grew up on the family farm and attended Holl School located across from the Holl homestead.  She graduated from Russell High School in 1941.  Following graduation she attended Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, Kansas.  She worked in clerical jobs over the years.  She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Leland Martin Nuss on October 15, 1953, in Russell, Kansas.  She continued working outside the home for a few years before becoming a full time farm wife.  She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and many crafts.  Frances and Leland were blessed with two children, a son Monte and a daughter Sandra.  They were members of the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas.  She was an avid Kansas University Basketball fan and loved attending her granddaughters sporting events. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include her son Monte Nuss and wife Mary of Russell, Kansas; daughter Sandra Doherty of Hutchinson, Kansas; 5 grandchildren David (Susan) and Brian Doherty, Erica (Ryan) Feil and Kaci and Whitney Nuss.  Five great grandchildren Bryson and Lawson Feil and Tayler, Peyton and Andy Doherty. One sister Betty (Dean) Popp of Lakewood, Co.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, her parents, brother Ottomer Holl and great granddaughter Carly Doherty.

A graveside service to celebrate Frances’ life will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, October 09, 2020, at the Russell City Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 1 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Thursday, October 08, 2020 at the mortuary.  Memorials may be given to the Main Street Manor Nursing Center and can be sent in care of the mortuary. A short somber ceremony at the downtown Hays Fire Department Sunday was one of the few in-person tributes in observation of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, Oct. 3 and 4.

The coronavirus pandemic forced the <a href="https://www.firehero.org/">National Fallen Firefighters Foundation</a>&nbsp;at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md., to conduct its annual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.firehero.org/events/memorial-weekend/about/bells-across-america/">Bells Across America </a>memorial ceremony online.

 Other such observations at fire stations across the country also went virtual because of COVID-19 concerns.

Although the public was not invited, Hays Firefighter Justin Choitz organized a local remembrance ceremony Sunday evening in front of the fire house on Main Street.

The tolling of a bell in a specific pattern represents a special message to firefighters, according to Choitz.

"The history of tolling the bell 3 times — 5 times each — comes before telephones, and [emergency] pagers and radios," Choitz said.&nbsp;

"The fire alarm pull boxes that used to be on the corners of streets in America&nbsp;— depending on the location&nbsp;— would tone out a specific tone to a specific fire&nbsp; station.

"And it became universally known that 5 tones with a short pause, 5 tones with another pause, followed up by 5 tones was to signify that there had been a line of duty death," he explained.

Participating in the Hays ceremony were two current firefighters in their dress uniforms and face masks, Lt. Tyler Brungardt and Firefighter Brandon Woods, along with two future firefighters, the young sons of Brungardt.

Noah Brungardt, wearing a T-shirt with "HFD" on the back in big red letters, helped pull the long rope for the final set of five bells, carefully counting each one on his fingers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The tolling of the five bells is for the 82 firefighters that we lost [nationally] in 2019," Choitz said.&nbsp;

Sitting on a portable trailer, the large silver bell that rang out 15 times was provided by Thomas More Prep-Marian school. The bell is used to rally school spirit during football games and other activities.&nbsp;

Choitz had invited several retired firefighters to join in the tribute but they declined, worried about COVID-19.

Two Hays firefighters have been killed in the line of duty. 

"In November 1919, there was a fuel oil fire downtown," Choitz said. "Several civilian spectators were killed along with two of our firefighters."

A memorial plaque to Stephen Tourtillot and Nichols Arnold is embedded in the north wall of the Main Street fire station.

United States Congress created the National Fallen&nbsp;Firefighters Foundation in 1992 to lead a nationwide effort to honor the memories of all U.S. firefighters who died in the line of duty and to provide support to their loved ones.

As part of this mission, each October the nonprofit foundation hosts&nbsp;the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, the official national tribute, in Emmitsburg, Md.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused everyone to hit the pause button on life. During the stoppage and forced time away from routines, many people have come to appreciate the important things in life – family, friends and faith among others.&nbsp;

Still, the loss of some routines and regular activities hurt worse than others, namely last spring when high school sports and performing arts were shut down. Millions of students, coaches, parents and fans quickly began to realize the privilege of involvement in these education-based programs in schools.&nbsp;

Now, slowly but surely, high school sports and performing arts are on their way back into schools in Kansas and across the country. While things are different – with social distancing, universal masking protocols in place – there is a resounding feeling of thankfulness that some degree of normalcy is returning.

As a result, this year’s celebration of National High School Activities Month will be like none other in the 40-year history of the event. Since 1980, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and its member state associations have promoted the values of high school activity programs during the month of October, but this year will be extra special.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hopefully, one of the silver linings of the pandemic is that parents and other fans are more grateful for any opportunity to attend contests this year and positively support student participants. At this time last year, there were numerous incidents of inappropriate adult behavior at high school events – mostly directed at officials.&nbsp;

This year, in addition to being respectful of officials, being a good fan involves supporting participants by social distancing and wearing a mask. Attending a high school contest is even more of a privilege, and players, coaches and officials need positive and encouraging support.

The week of October 11-17 is National Performing Arts Activities and Local State High School Associations Week.

More than four million high school students are involved in speech, debate, music, band and theatre activities each year. And the results of an aerosol study conducted by the NFHS and 125 other organizations show that if schools are in session, these activities can be safely conducted by implementing a mitigation strategy focused on Masks-Distance-Time-Air Flow-Hygiene.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Competing on the debate team or playing in the marching band or acting on stage as a part of the theatre team help students develop critical-thinking skills. They also learn to be better communicators and tend to be good listeners – qualities that are essential for success in life and in their chosen careers.

This week is also set aside to recognize the 51 NFHS member state associations, which have been working overtime for the past seven months with state government, health and education leaders to outline a safe return to activities.

The week of October 18-24 is National Coaches, Advisors, Officials and Sponsors Week.

High school coaches are playing an even larger role this year in connecting with their athletes – whether that connection is virtual or in-person. In some situations, a coach may be the most significant mentor in a student-athlete’s life, so keeping that relationship intact is paramount. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The nationwide shortage of officials has been exacerbated by the pandemic as some officials have decided not to return. COLUMN: Celebrating return to play

With the maiden name of Meyer and married name of Krug you might guess that our family has a rich German heritage. I have always enjoyed learning about the foods that are tied to various cultures and when you think of German foods, one that comes to mind is sauerkraut. Did you know that sauerkraut is easy to make in your home kitchen so that you can enjoy it often?

The past year I have been busy learning more about the fermentation of vegetables. I submitted a proposal to write a Fact Sheet for K-State Research and Extension titled, “Taking a New Look at Fermented Foods.” I had been seeing articles in several sources and heard a conference speaker touting the health benefits of eating a small amount of fermented foods often. Then I noticed a fermentation kit on the shelf at our local hardware store. The kit made fermenting vegetables in wide mouth canning jars in small batches sound like a fun thing to try.&nbsp;

The practice of fermenting foods has been around for thousands of years. There are many claims to how fermentation was discovered, but now, every culture with access to salt, makes some kind of fermented food. The simplicity of this food preservation method coupled with its unique flavors and reported health benefits has made fermenting food popular worldwide. Today there seems to be a renewed interest in preparing fermented foods at home.

Many foods and beverages are created through the process of fermentation: sourdough bread, yogurt, beer, wine, sauerkraut, and kombucha to name a few. The fact sheet I wrote focused on the fermentation of vegetables, known as lactic acid fermentation. Fermentation is a process where the natural bacteria found in fresh vegetables utilize the carbohydrates to reproduce and excrete lactic acid, which preserves the vegetables and creates a characteristic tangy flavor.

I would love for you to join me at one of the public educational programs I am scheduled to present during October. My presentation will include sharing the techniques for making sauerkraut and kimchi successfully in a wide mouth canning jar. Kimchi is a delicious Korean condiment that is fun to make. I will also discuss the health benefits of including fermented foods in your daily menu.&nbsp;

Funded by an EllisCARES grant, First Presbyterian Church, 2900 Hall St., Hays, is offering a safe, supervised and distanced alternative for remote/hybrid learning to all middle and high school students enrolled in the Ellis County school districts. 

The free program will run from October 5- December 14, 2020.

We know that districts, teachers, students and families are facing unprecedented challenges. 

We hope that this option helps relieve lack of access to adequate internet, social isolation and family stress with students home alone for those who are using hybrid or remote learning options. 

The remote learning staff will providing instructional support, encouragement, and maintain health and safety guidelines.

The building is fully accessible on one level with a dedicated entrance and dedicated restrooms.

The Wi-Fi-enabled hall will accommodate up to 20 preregistered middle and high school students in 3 ½ hour blocks. 

There will be separate morning and afternoon groups Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-3:00pm. If there is a need, hours can be expanded to include some evenings and weekends.

Attendance will be recorded. Masks will be required for all inside the building. Distanced seating will be assigned. A full kitchen is on site for storing lunch and snacks brought by the students.

Free remote/hybrid learning center open to Ellis Co. middle & high school students 

Glenn Carl Radenberg, 96, died October 4, 2020, at Country Place 
Senior Living, Hoisington. Glenn was born February 18, 1924, on the farm
 north of Claflin, Kansas, the son of Carl Ernest and Lulu Anna 
(Grossardt) Radenberg. Glenn was the valedictorian of the Claflin High 
School Class of 1942.

A lifetime Claflin area resident, Glenn was a farmer, rancher and had
 interest in the oilfield. Glenn was an active member of the St. Paul’s 
United Church of Christ, in Holyrood, where he taught Sunday School. 
Glenn was a member of Swinging Stars Square Dancing Club and he enjoyed 
polka dancing. Mostly he enjoyed spending time with his family.

On April 20, 1958,Glenn married Marvella June Rusco at the Trinity 
Lutheran Church in Great Bend. She preceded him in death on October 19, 
2010.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Glenn is survived by; sons, John Carl Radenberg and wife Debbie, 
David Glenn Radenberg and wife Maxine, and Mark Alfred Radenberg and 
wife Carrie, all of Claflin; sister-in-law, Renee Pike of Great Bend; 12
 grandchildren Skylar, William, James, J.C., Sharon, Alice, Johnathan, 
Rose, Brandon, Austin, Katie, Duncan and 6 great grandchildren Riley, 
Miranda, Brinley, Amelia, Rexdon, Magnolia.Glenn was preceded in death 
by his brothers, Harry and Lee Radenberg, sisters, Helen Foster, Norma 
Stucky, and Dorothy Tritsch.

Glenn Carl Radenberg

Helen Rae Jennings Stanley, 97, died on Saturday, March 14, 2020, at 
Lane County Hospital in Dighton. She was born on January 20, 1923 at 
Altamont, Kansas the daughter of Jess &amp; Mary Genis (Elder) Jennings.
 She married Dwight “Porky” Stanley on May 12, 1954 at Scott City, 
Kansas. He died on April 30, 2012. 
Helen graduated from Labette County High School and earned her 
Bachelor’s in English and Music Education from Southwestern College in 
Winfield. She later took classes at The University of Kansas and 
University of Colorado. She taught in Buhler before moving to Dighton 
in 1949 where she taught at Dighton High School and then taught music 
for the Lane County country schools in Amy, Shields and Alamota. She 
and her husband owned and operated Stanley Liquor Store for 17 years and
 she later was the office manager for the Birney &amp; Company office in
 Dighton. She gave many piano lessons in the community and her passion 
was preparing and accompanying her students in competitions. She was a 
member of the First Christian Church where she was the pianist and 
played for many funerals, weddings and other church events. She also 
belonged to the PEO. She enjoyed golfing at Lane County Country Club 
and Southwind Country Club. Helen took great pride in maintaining her 
yard, and working in her flower beds. Her roses brought joy to many. 
She was also a delivery volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years. 
Helen loved sports and was a loyal Jayhawks, Royals and Chiefs fan. 
She is survived by her Daughters- Nita &amp; David Kuhlman of Dighton, 
Sandy &amp; Wayne Brooks of Hutchinson, Kristi &amp; Mike Heyka of 
Highlands Ranch, Colorado and Teri Harris &amp; Andy Parker of Lawrence,
 4 Grandchildren- Dustin Dwight (Trisha) Kuhlman, Jessa Rae (Ben)

Wilbur Eugene "Gene" Evans was born September 10, 1938, the son of Wilbur O. and Viola M. (Holaday) Evans in Hays, KS. He left this world to be in the healing arms of Jesus on October, 2, 2020, at the age of 82.

Gene was raised to manhood on the family farm southeast of Gove, KS in the Missouri Flats area. Gene attended grade school at the East Lone Star country school and Quinter High School graduating in 1957. He then attended Fort Hays State University graduating in 1961 with a Bachelor Degree in Mathematics. After college, he joined his father and brother, Gary, on the family farm and eventually bought his own farm nearby from his Great Uncle, Charles J. Evans.

In April of 1971, he married Marjorie Lea Goldsby of Lenora, KS. To join this union, two daughters were born, Gina Lea and April DeAnn.

Gene was very active in farming, community, and county affairs. He served many years on the Farm Bureau Board and the Gove County 4-H Extension Council. He also served 15 years on the Gove City Council with three years of service as mayor of Gove. Gene has been a member of the Quinter United Methodist Church, the Gove United Methodist Church, and was most recently a member of the Gove Community Bible Church. Gene served as a board member for many years in all three churches as a trustee and on the finance committee. He was named a lifetime elder at the Gove Community Bible Church. Gene’s Cerebral Palsy may have slowed him down at times, but it never stopped him. He won numerous awards in agriculture while in high school and in 4-H. He later was a 4-H Community Leader while his children were involved in the program. A number of 4-H calves from his own herd were sold to youngsters to help them get started. Gene was also considered a mentor to many young farmers as they worked with him.

His wife, children, and grandchildren have always been the light of his life. He loved spending time with his family, mentoring his kids and grandsons, and watching them grow.

Gene and Marjorie retired from the farm in 1998 and moved to Gove. His last few years were spent in the Long-Term Care in Quinter. While there, he was involved in as many activities and projects as possible. Church services and men’s Bible study were very much a priority. His Christian testimony radiated in every way through him. He rededicated his life by choosing to be baptized again at the age of 80.

Surviving are his wife, Marjorie, of the home; two daughters, Gina (John) Price, Rush Center, KS, and April (Travis) Kelso, Sterling, KS; three grandsons, Weston Price, Wilson, KS, Cody (Kaylyn) Price, Overland Park, KS, and Grayson Kelso, Sterling, KS; two brothers, Carl (Cheryl) Evans, Irmo, SC, and Darrel (Kathy) Evans, Quinter, KS; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother, Gary Evans, and a sister-in-law, Sally Evans.

A private service will be held for immediate family only. There will be a public graveside service at 11:00 AM Friday, October 9, 2020, at Gove City Cemetery, masks and social distancing encouraged. The funeral service will be livestreamed on the CBC Facebook page and at govecbc.com.

Gerald L. “Tim” Adrian, 96, of Colby, passed away Saturday morning, October 3, 2020 at Citizens Medical Center, Colby, KS. He was born July 15, 19124, in Sheridan County, KS to John and Marie (Tucker) Adrian. 
He married Mary Lou Wallace on March 9, 1047. Tim tilled the soil to 
raise crops and raised cattle in his adult years. In addition; he was 
the manager of the High Plains Coop, in Colby, co-owner and manager of 
the West Sale Barn, in Norton, KS and was a realtor and appraiser for 
Farm and Ranch Realty in Colby. 
Tim was a proud WWII veteran and was a lifetime member of the Veterans 
of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, serving as commander for both 
organizations. 
Tim is survived by his son, Gary, of Colby; grandchildren, Brian 
Schulze, of Norton, Brandon (Teresa) Schulze, of Norton and Carey 
(Brian) Steinhauer, Sutton, NE; great-grandchildren, Adrien Follum, 
Sutton, NE, Tymerie and Shane Steinhauer, Sutton, NE and Kadon Schulze, 
Norton and sister Rosemary Jordon, of Dallas, TX. Tim will also be

KDHE: Latest coronavirus numbers in Kansas

Norma Jane Daniels was born October 9, 1924 at Cimarron, Kansas.&nbsp; The
 place was the McFarland grandparent’s home in the west part of town. 
Her parents were Wilmer “Tude” Rowton and Lydia McFarland Rowton. In 
1926, they moved to the farm located 2 miles west and 2 miles north of 
Kalvesta, KS. 

She started school when she was 6 years old and her first 
teacher was the well known “Abe Huebert” in the Kalvesta school District
 #29. There were only five students in her class. She was 12 years old 
when she attended Garden City Jr High. She and her mother, Lydia lived 
in an apartment in Garden City while Norma attended Jr High and High 
School. She enjoyed music and band and especially history classes and 
graduated from Garden City High School in 1941. She continued her 
education at Fort Hays State University and graduated in 1945 at age 20 
with a degree in History and a minor in Political Science.

After graduation, she signed a contract with Stockton High School in 
Stockton, KS to teach American History and Government. She met her 
future husband, Bill Daniels (who had just been released from the Marine
 Corps) at a skating rink in Woodston, KS. They skated together just one
 time that evening. Bill called her the next day to go on a date; rabbit
 hunting on a Sunday afternoon. They later were engaged and were married
 June 21, 1946 at the Stockton Methodist Church. They moved to the farm 
in Kalvesta in 1947 and remained there until 1986. They raised wheat, 
cattle and 6 children.

Norma and Bill moved to Dodge City in 1986. Bill passed away June 13,
 2003 and Norma remained in Dodge City until a recent move to the 
Cimarron Shepard Center July 1, 2020. She passed away October 1, 2020 
just 8 days from celebrating her 96th birthday. Norma was a member of
 the Kalvesta United Methodist Church, Kansas Genealogical Society, 
National Genealogical Society and the Daughters of the American 
Revolution.&nbsp; She was an avid reader of books, many times reading 2-3 
books at a time. She enjoyed researching family history on her computer.
 Other hobbies included Knitting and needlepoint. She was very proud of 
her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She would share 
pictures of them with everyone that visited her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilmer and Lydia Rowton, 
her husband, Bill of almost 57 years, and a son, Michael Dean. Norma 
is survived by her 6 children; Mary Johnson of Lawrence, KS, Teresa 
Walters and spouse Larry of Fishers, IN, John Daniels and spouse Gail of
 Lawrence, KS, Joel Daniels and spouse Becky of Cimarron, KS, James 
Daniels of Lawrence, KS and Jeffrey Daniels and spouse Paula of Hawaiian
 Gardens, CA. 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. The memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 10,
 2020 at the First Christian Church in Cimarron, KS with Pastor David 
Johnson officiating. The service will be viewable via Facebook live at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.facebook.com/cimarronfirstchristianchurch/">www.facebook.com/cimarronfirstchristianchurch/</a> .&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in the Cimarron Cemetery. Norma Jane Daniels

Leo W. Keller, 97, of Oakley, died Sunday, October 4, 2020 at Logan 
County Senior Living, Oakley. He was born on August 1, 1923, near Mingo,
 KS to David &amp; Sophia (Bush) Keller. He was the 2nd of the 8 
children: Rebecca, Les, Ben, Ruthie, Esther, Daniel and Mary. He was 
raised on a family farm, milking cows, feeding cows and doing regular 
farm work. He attended grade school at the Mingo school until the 8th 
grade, when he was required to quit, due to the health of his dad. 


On April 4, 1944, he married Wanda Nell Curry, in Oakley, KS. To this 
union of 32 years, 4 children were born: Leotta Ranell, Shirley Darnell,
 Fontella Jean, and William Jr. “J.R.”


In January of 1944, Leo was drafted into the Army and served the 76th 
Infantry Division, 417 Regiment 3rd Army and was sent to Germany to 
fight in WWII. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and was under 
fire by the Germans and shared cover under a bridge with General Patton.
 His division crossed the Rhine River, fighting toward Frankfort and 
Berlin. He was in Kimnitsch, Germany when the war was declared over. He 
was headed to Japan, but the war ended when the U.S. dropped the bomb on
 Hiroshima. He was sent back to the US. on the Queen Mary and arrived 
back in the states on December 9, 1945. Leo received an Honorable 
Discharge for service to his country. 


After returning from the war, he and Wanda purchased a farm west of Page
 City. Leo partnered with his brothers, Les and Ben, and operated as the
 Keller Brothers in the farming and cattle industries. In 1956, they 
bought the Oakley Livestock Commission Co. and Leo owned and operated it
 until 1973. During this time Leo also operated Keller Cattle Co. and 
continued to be a bonded livestock dealer, buying cattle for several 
different ranchers and big feedlots until 1985. 


In 1967, Leo acquired the headquarters ranch of Foster Lumber Co.’s 
farmstead, north of Bretton. Leo raised cows and calves for 44 years and
 sold his last herd in 2011. His business adventures also led him to 
invest in a land development on the slope of Colorado, in 1971, and it 
has grown into a living community. Among Leo’s greatest pleasures were 
coyote hunting with a pack of dogs, pheasant and quail hunting, and any 
card games that included gambling. 


Leo was baptized and became a member of the Oakley United Methodist 
Church. He was an active member of the Oakley Country Club, Oakley 
Ranger Riders, the VFW and the Hoxie Elks. He served as an officer and 
President of the Kansas Livestock Auction Association and was a member 
of the National Livestock Association.


On November 2, 1977, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Hills, from Colby, KS.
 They had a home in Loghill Village, CO, while maintain a home in 
Oakley. Betty’s children, Craig and Anita Hills, Doug and Junelle Hills 
and Rhonda and Gary Holstein joined the Keller family. Leo had 8 
grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. 
Betty’s family added another 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
 


Preceding Leo in death were his parents; wives, Wanda and Betty, son 
J.R. sons-in-law, Jim Heskett, Dick Carman and David Fant; grandson, Dr.
 Layne Lunsway, grandson-in-law, Rick Patrick; step-son, Doug Hills and 
his siblings, Rebecca, Les, Ben, Ruthie, Daniel and Mary. 


He will be missed by his family and friends. Survivors include 3 
daughters, Ranell (Lile) Lunsway, of Manhattan, KS, Darnel (Mel) 
Holopirek, of Maize, KS, and Foni Fant, of Plainville, KS; his sister, 
Esther Bedore, of Colby; grandchildren, Lance (Denise) Lunsway, of 
Atlanta, GA, Linc (Summer) Lunsway, of Manhattan, KS, Terra (Alan) Zerr,
 of Stillwater, OK, Jemelle Ebers, of Wichita, KS, Lander (Kary) 
Holopirek, of Wamego, KS, Thonda Patrick, of Hays, KS and Ty (Heather) 
Jennings, of Montrose, CO; great grandchildren, Alexis, Breanna, 
Caitlin, Janessa, Jordan, Steele, Shaye, Stratten, Delayney and Shaylee;
 great-great grandchildren, Amelia, Amiya and Amari and all the families
 merged by his marriage to Betty. 


Private family burial will take place in the Oakley City Cemetery.

farmstead, north of Bretton. Leo raised cows and calves for 44 years and
 sold his last herd in 2011. His business adventures also led him to 
invest in a land development on the slope of Colorado, in 1971, and it 
has grown into a living community. Among Leo’s greatest pleasures were 
coyote hunting with a pack of dogs, pheasant and quail hunting, and any 
card games that included gambling. 
Leo was baptized and became a member of the Oakley United Methodist 
Church. He was an active member of the Oakley Country Club, Oakley 
Ranger Riders, the VFW and the Hoxie Elks. He served as an officer and 
President of the Kansas Livestock Auction Association and was a member 
of the National Livestock Association.
On November 2, 1977, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Hills, from Colby, KS.
 They had a home in Loghill Village, CO, while maintain a home in 
Oakley. Betty’s children, Craig and Anita Hills, Doug and Junelle Hills 
and Rhonda and Gary Holstein joined the Keller family. Leo had 8 
grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. 
Betty’s family added another 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
 
Preceding Leo in death were his parents; wives, Wanda and Betty, son 
J.R. sons-in-law, Jim Heskett, Dick Carman and David Fant; grandson, Dr.
 Layne Lunsway, grandson-in-law, Rick Patrick; step-son, Doug Hills and 
his siblings, Rebecca, Les, Ben, Ruthie, Daniel and Mary. 
He will be missed by his family and friends. Survivors include 3 
daughters, Ranell (Lile) Lunsway, of Manhattan, KS, Darnel (Mel) 
Holopirek, of Maize, KS, and Foni Fant, of Plainville, KS; his sister, 
Esther Bedore, of Colby; grandchildren, Lance (Denise) Lunsway, of 
Atlanta, GA, Linc (Summer) Lunsway, of Manhattan, KS, Terra (Alan) Zerr,
 of Stillwater, OK, Jemelle Ebers, of Wichita, KS, Lander (Kary) 
Holopirek, of Wamego, KS, Thonda Patrick, of Hays, KS and Ty (Heather) 
Jennings, of Montrose, CO; great grandchildren, Alexis, Breanna, 
Caitlin, Janessa, Jordan, Steele, Shaye, Stratten, Delayney and Shaylee;
 great-great grandchildren, Amelia, Amiya and Amari and all the families
 merged by his marriage to Betty. 
Private family burial will take place in the Oakley City Cemetery.

Melissa “Missy” Ann Finnesy passed away on October 3, 2020, at the 
Redbud Village in Plainville, KS, at the age of 60. She was born on 
September 7, 1960, in Plainville to Donald Joseph and Eva Marie (Mayhew) 
Finnesy.
 Missy grew up in Plainville and graduated from Plainville High 
School in 1980. She worked in housekeeping at Redbud Village for many 
years. She was a faithful member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and
 was inducted into the Special Olympics Hall of Fame in 1986. Although 
Missy was disabled, she was always “with it” and participated in many 
things from basketball and cheerleading, to dancing. Always with an 
ear-to-ear smile, she knew no stranger. She loved all her “boyfriends” –
 even though they were married! She loved birthdays and loved receiving 
cards. Just as much though, she loved sending cards and never forgot 
everyone’s birthday.
 The Apostle Paul said, “Let us throw off everything that hinders, 
and run with perseverance, the race marked out for us.” Missy was a good
 woman with a good heart who lived life with determination and 
perseverance and enjoyed the ride with family, friends, and loved ones. 
She taught us all how to be true winners. Never one to let anything get 
in her way, she beat us to the finish line, but we look forward to 
rejoining her one day when we all get together in the winner’s circle.
 Left to survive Missy are her brothers, D.J. Finnesy and wife Norma

Melissa Ann 'Missy' Finnesy

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged sexual assault and have a registered Kansas sex offender in custody.

Just after 7 p.m. Sept. 22, police were dispatched to a sexual assault case in the 800 block of South Sylvan in Wichita, according to officer Paul Cruz.

Upon arrival, a 48-year-old female victim, told police she was walking in the area of Lincoln and Oliver when a suspect later identified as 34-year-old Darrius Johnson approached and grabbed her, forcing her into his Toyota Camry.

Johnson drove the victim to a separate location and sexually assaulted her. Johnson then drove the victim back to Lincoln and Oliver where she was released. Through the investigation and examination of evidence, Johnson was determined to have been involved in the attack. 

On Sunday, police reported they arrested Johnson October 1, in the 2100 block of South White Oak without incident.&nbsp; He is being held on requested charges of rape and aggravated kidnapping, according to Cruz.

Johnson has a previous felony conviction in 2010 for attempted aggravated sexual battery where victim is overcome by force or fear, according to the KBI offender registry.

At the time of his arrest, Johnson was out on bond for a separate alleged sex crime., according to Cruz.

Linda Jean Sterba was born July 22, 1958, in Belleville, KS. She was the
 fourth child of Glenn and Francis Sterba. She died October 4, 2020, at

 Linda was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother Fern Sterba and sister Donna Pelsor.
 She is survived by sisters Carol Montgomery of Smith Center, KS and 
Judith Holmin of Englewood, CO; stepsister Melissa (Bryan) Sahlfeld of 
Wichita, KS; stepbrother Edward (Amy) Dunensing of Tecumseh, KS; close

Lucille M. Kuhn, age 87, of Victoria, 
Kansas, died Sunday, October 4, 2020, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, 
Kansas.&nbsp; She was born December 30, 1932, in Plainville, Kansas, to Adam 
R. and Mary F. (McMullen) Stahl.&nbsp; She married Alfred L. “Al” Kuhn on 
June 16, 1955, at Plainville, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on 
February 22, 2018.

She was a homemaker and a farmer’s wife
 on their farm North of Victoria.&nbsp; She cared for her four grandchildren 
before they entered school.&nbsp; She was&nbsp; a member of The Basilica of St. 
Fidelis.&nbsp; Lucille grew up in Plainville and was a graduate of Plainville
 High School.&nbsp;

Survivors include two sons, Leon Kuhn 
and wife, Colleen, Victoria, KS; Norbert Kuhn, of the home; two 
daughters, Donna Kuhn, of the home, Diane Unrein and husband, Curtis,

Micaela (Mickey) A. Perez, 86, passed away October 3, 2020 at The 
University of Kansas Heath Systems, Pawnee Valley Campus, Larned.

She was born January 22, 1934 in Dodge City, Kansas; the daughter of 
Domingo and Angela Espinoza Gonzales.&nbsp; A longtime resident of Larned; 
she was a CNA at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary, both of Larned.

On December 2, 1962 she married Janero J. Perez in Dodge City.&nbsp; He passed away June 10, 1982.

Survivors include; two sons, Tim, Hutchinson and Troy, Jetmore; a 
daughter, Gina Perez, Larned; three brothers, Pete Gonzales, Albert 
(Pino) Gonzales, both of Dodge City, Julian Gonzales, Wichita; six 
grandchildren, Angela Pounds, Adam Perez, Deavin Perez, Sydney Perez, 
Bryce Perez and Taylor Grover and four great grandchildren, Serenity 
Perez, Cayden Shaver, Hagen Kennon and Kobin Kennon.

Micaela (Mickey) A. Perez

Janet Lee Mehling, age 68, of Goodland, died on October 2nd at the Topside Manor in Goodland, Kansas.&nbsp; She is at peace after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. &nbsp;

Janet was born on April 19, 1952 in Goodland to Lowell and Alberta (Kling) Harding.&nbsp; She was raised on the Harding farm Northeast of Goodland and had many good memories of growing up on the farm.&nbsp; Janet was the younger sister by two years and shared that Dianna was the best older sister she could have ever had.&nbsp; Janet wrote that in high school she and her sister spent a lot of time dragging main.&nbsp; Many times they would stop at the corner garage and put 50 cents worth of gas in so that their dad wouldn’t know how much gas they had used, later to find out it was really the number of miles they were putting on the car that he was watching. &nbsp; Janet loved to share her stories and her life with her family.

Following graduation from Goodland High School, she attended Brown Mackie School of Business in Salina.&nbsp; She returned to Goodland and married Randal Gausman.&nbsp; They were later divorced.&nbsp; Scott and Crystal were the blessings from this union.&nbsp; In 1989, Janet married Bill Mehling and they recently celebrated 31 years of Marriage.&nbsp; Janet dedicated her entire 40-year career to First National Bank in Goodland where she served as Senior Vice President &amp; CFO.&nbsp; She was a member and former President of PEO ID.&nbsp; Janet had an infectious laugh and loved to do things for others to make them feel special.&nbsp; She was a great support to her family and was always ready to listen and help however she could.&nbsp; She loved Husker football, spending time with family, and watching movies.&nbsp; Movies received as Christmas presents always had a note stating they had already been inspected, by a member of Santa’s team.&nbsp; Janet left this earth too soon, but leaves a legacy of love for her children and grandchildren.

Janet is preceded in death by her parents, Lowell and Alberta Harding of Goodland.&nbsp; Surviving family members are her husband, Bill of their home in Goodland; Scott Gausman and wife Nikki of Kearney, Nebraska; daughter Crystal Cutbirth of Broomfield, Colorado; four beloved grandchildren, Kaiden Cutbirth, Kailee Cutbirth, Blaize Gausman, and Neely Gausman; sister Dianna Elliot and husband Chuck of Tribune; mother-in-law Rosella Mehling of Sidney, Nebraska; sister-in-law Claire Evans and husband Dave of Southlake, Texas; sister-in-law Lynn Nelson of Parker, Colorado; brother-in-law Chuck Mehling and wife Cheryl of Spring, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 6, 2020 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland. &nbsp;

 </figure>Janet Lee Mehling, age 68, of Goodland, died on October 2nd at the Topside Manor in Goodland, Kansas.&nbsp; She is at peace after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. &nbsp;Janet was born on April 19, 1952 in Goodland to Lowell and Alberta (Kling) Harding.&nbsp; She was raised on the Harding farm Northeast of Goodland and had many good memories of growing up on the farm.&nbsp; Janet was the younger sister by two years and shared that Dianna was the best older sister she could have ever had.&nbsp; Janet wrote that in high school she and her sister spent a lot of time dragging main.&nbsp; Many times they would stop at the corner garage and put 50 cents worth of gas in so that their dad wouldn’t know how much gas they had used, later to find out it was really the number of miles they were putting on the car that he was watching. &nbsp; Janet loved to share her stories and her life with her family.Following graduation from Goodland High School, she attended Brown Mackie School of Business in Salina.&nbsp; She returned to Goodland and married Randal Gausman.&nbsp; They were later divorced.&nbsp; Scott and Crystal were the blessings from this union.&nbsp; In 1989, Janet married Bill Mehling and they recently celebrated 31 years of Marriage.&nbsp; Janet dedicated her entire 40-year career to First National Bank in Goodland where she served as Senior Vice President &amp; CFO.&nbsp; She was a member and former President of PEO ID.&nbsp; Janet had an infectious laugh and loved to do things for others to make them feel special.&nbsp; She was a great support to her family and was always ready to listen and help however she could.&nbsp; She loved Husker football, spending time with family, and watching movies.&nbsp; Movies received as Christmas presents always had a note stating they had already been inspected, by a member of Santa’s team.&nbsp; Janet left this earth too soon, but leaves a legacy of love for her children and grandchildren.Janet is preceded in death by her parents, Lowell and Alberta Harding of Goodland.&nbsp; Surviving family members are her husband, Bill of their home in Goodland; Scott Gausman and wife Nikki of Kearney, Nebraska; daughter Crystal Cutbirth of Broomfield, Colorado; four beloved grandchildren, Kaiden Cutbirth, Kailee Cutbirth, Blaize Gausman, and Neely Gausman; sister Dianna Elliot and husband Chuck of Tribune; mother-in-law Rosella Mehling of Sidney, Nebraska; sister-in-law Claire Evans and husband Dave of Southlake, Texas; sister-in-law Lynn Nelson of Parker, Colorado; brother-in-law Chuck Mehling and wife Cheryl of Spring, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.Visitation will be Tuesday, October 6, 2020 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland. &nbsp;Funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 10:30 AM MT at the First Christian Church with Pastor Doug Amend officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.Memorials may be designated to the Topside Manor, the Alzheimer’s Association or to the First Christian Church and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Janet Lee (Harding) Mehling

Gregory Alan Cundiff was born October 22, 1960, to Donald and Peggy 
(Fuller) Cundiff. He passed away on Oct. 4, 2020, at the Decatur County 
Hospital in Oberlin. Though he has passed from this life, he is yet 
alive in Christ Jesus his Lord.


Greg was a 1978 graduate of the Sharon Springs High School. After 
graduation, he entered the Army and later was a member of the Kansas 
Army Nation Guard, Det 2 (Colby) until 1984. He studied carpentry and 
plumbing at the Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland. On March
 25, 1989, Greg married Janice May in Oberlin, KS. He was a member of 
St. John’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion Honor Guard in 
Oberlin. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and fishing and he 
was a Denver Broncos and St. Louis Cardinals fan.

his wife, Janice of Oberlin; sons, Jeffery Burkhead and Quintin 
(Lindsay) Cundiff; grandchildren, Carter and Joshua Cundiff; siblings: 
Vicky (Glenn) Case, Randy (Stacy) Cundiff, and Robin (Eric) McCoy; 
half-brother, Trampus (Heddy) Francis; step-brother, Todd Francis; 
step-father, Sonny Francis and nieces and nephews. 
Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Friday, October 9, 2020 at 
St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oberlin. Burial with Military Honors will 
follow at the Oberlin Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, October 8, 
2020 from 1-7:00 pm at Pauls Funeral Home, Oberlin. Family will receive 
friends from 6-7:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the 
Wounded Warrior Project or the American Heart Association. Condolences
