Helen E. Klein, 84, passed away October 10, 2020, at her home in 
Great Bend.&nbsp; She was born August 25, 1936, in Hoisington, to Joseph and 
Mary (Demel) Courange.&nbsp; Helen married Larry Eugene Klein Aug. 17, 1953, 
in Russell.&nbsp; He died Aug. 10, 2001.

Helen, a life time resident of Barton County, was a homemaker and enjoyed playing BINGO.

Survivors include three sons, Curtis Klein and wife Betty of 
Canadian, Texas, Mike Klein and wife Terri of Great Bend and Robert 
Klein of Great Bend; two daughters, Karen Barrow and husband Ron of 
Great Bend and Tammy Cushenbery and husband Daryl of Fort Worth, Texas; 
one brother, Jim Courange of Great Bend; three sisters, Joann Torrez of 
Hoisington, Theresa Hall of Great Bend and Norma Seyfert of Hoisington; 
19 grandchildren and many great and great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Klein and Todd Klein; 
six brothers, Gene Courange, Clarence Courange, Irvin Courange, Victor 
Courange, Joe Courange and Paul Courange; and five sisters, Marge 
Courange, Maryanne Ash, Victoria Hubbard, Irene Green and Virginia 
Munoz.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at 
Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Rev. Dick Ogle.&nbsp; Interment will 
follow at Hoisington Cemetery, Hoisington.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 
10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, October 12, with the family receiving 
friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Helen E. Klein

Anna Lee (Thill) Habiger, 97, passed away peacefully October 10, 
2020, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born at Dubuque on 
October 20, 1922, to Frank and Mary (Weber) Thill. Both her parents died
 before she was seven years old, and she was raised by her uncle and 
aunt, Nick J. and Mary Weber. She married Jerome Habiger of Bushton on 
March 30, 1948, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. 
Jerome passed away in 2004.

Anna Lee was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Bushton, the Holy
 Name Altar Society, and the former Mutual Improvement Club of Bushton. 
She loved praying the Rosary, feeding the orioles, going fishing, 
traveling, and most of all, spending time with her family, relatives and
 friends.

Suvivors include daughters, Diane Ingels of Topeka, Jane Habiger of 
Bushton and Mary Beth (Lee) Bonnewell of Andover; sons Norman (Myra) 
Habiger and Wayne (Karen) Habiger all of Bushton; grandchildren Joshua

The importance of being actively involved in politics is something faculty and staff at Fort Hays State University continually stress to students.

Once again this year, multiple entities at FHSU and in the city of Hays are teaming up to provide live debate coverage of the 111th District in the Kansas House of Representatives. The race features incumbent Barbara Wasinger, R-Hays, and challenger Eber Phelps, D-Hays.

The debate will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 and will be broadcast live on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/fhsusga/">FHSU Student Government Association’s Facebook page</a> at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/fhsusga/">https://www.facebook.com/fhsusga/</a>.

“Every single host involved in ensuring these debates happen care greatly about civic engagement, and voters should take this opportunity to become informed about candidates and issues that will better our community,” said Crystal Rojas, legislative affairs director of the FHSU Student Government Association.&nbsp;

The event is being made possible by the collaboration of the FHSU Student Government Association, the American Democracy Project, the Department of Political Science, Tiger Media Network, the Hays Area Chamber of Commerce and the Docking Institute of Public Affairs.

“The 2020 November election will have a significant impact on the businesses and residents of Ellis County,” said Sarah Wasinger, president/CEO of the Hays Chamber. “Chamber advocacy for member investors is critical, especially this year and moving forward due to all the legislation that impacts local businesses. We encourage all registered voters and the public to watch the election forums this October. Exercise due diligence, research candidates and be sure to vote on Nov. 3.”

Candidates will answer questions from the moderators during the debate, and viewers will have the opportunity to ask questions in the live event with the comment section.&nbsp;

Questions for the candidates can also be submitted prior to the event by emailing them to fhsutmn@gmail.com.

Due to the need for social distancing requirements, no audience will be allowed in person at the debate.

Wasinger and Phelps squared off in the 111th District two years ago, with Wasinger knocking off Phelps by a slim margin.

To help the community become educated on this year’s general election, as well as candidates, a Forsyth Library employee has developed an online election guide.

Wasinger, Phelps to debate on Fort Hays State campus

HUTCHINSON – Winning exhibitors at the 88th&nbsp;Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS) earned premiums, while others were presented scholarships for excelling academically, in community service and in 4-H/FFA. 

The largest youth livestock show in Kansas featured 661 showmen from 93 counties, who exhibited 1,395 head of livestock, including 108 market steers, 269 breeding heifers, 153 market hogs, 174 breeding gilts, 214 market lambs, 201 breeding ewes, 140 market goats and 136 commercial doe kids. 

The statewide event was held October 2-4 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson.

Tyra Meyer from Sylvan Grove led the grand champion market steer, a 1,360 lb. Charolais entry.

The steer show was sponsored by Merck Animal Health. Pre-determined cash premiums were awarded to the top five animals in both the market and breeding shows for all four species. Meyer received a $4,000 premium for her steer. 

The reserve champion steer, weighing 1,370 lbs., came from the crossbred division and was owned by Wesley Denton of Blue Rapids, who received a $2,000. Third overall, worth $1,000, went to the champion Chianina steer, owned by Thade Combs of Hutchinson. Placing fourth overall and earning a $750 premium was the champion Angus, exhibited by Nick Siemens from Towanda. Fifth went to the reserve champion crossbred, owned by Rilee McGraw of Garden City, who earned $500.

McKenna Richardson of Eureka owned the supreme champion in the breeding heifer show, sponsored by Merck Animal Health. Richardson was awarded a $1,000 premium for her Limousin entry. Reserve supreme went to a Chianina heifer, earning $750, shown by Darla Fesmire, Bartlett. Third overall, which earned $500, went to the champion Percentage Simmental led by Abby Wood of Leavenworth. Kelsey Theis, also from Leavenworth, exhibited the champion Angus heifer that received fourth overall and $400. The fifth overall heifer, earning $300, was the reserve Percentage Simmental led by Lauren Aust from La Cygne.

In the senior beef showmanship division, Wesley Denton from Blue Rapids was champion showman. Reserve went to Jody Mead of McPherson. In the intermediate division, Jase Beltz from Canton was named champion showman. Ava Jane Combs from Hutchinson was reserve. The champion showman in the junior division was Peyton Baalman of Quinter. Reserve was awarded to Aubree McCurry from Hutchinson.

Jenna DeRouchey of Wamego guided her 263 lb. dark crossbred barrow to the grand champion market hog title, which earned her $2,000. A 259 lb. dark crossbred owned by Brenden Anderson of Caney was reserve grand champion hog. Anderson’s entry garnered a $1,500 premium. The show was sponsored by Seaboard Foods. Third overall, worth $1,000, went to Hayden Englert of Washington, with his Yorkshire barrow. Tayte Leck of Neodesha owned the champion light AOB barrow that placed fourth overall and earned $750. Fifth overall, earning a $500 premium, was the reserve champion Yorkshire exhibited by Jack Gilliam of Washington.

An entry from the light AOB division, owned by Abi Lillard of Abilene, was named supreme champion in the gilt show, also sponsored by Seaboard Foods. Lillard received a $750 premium for the gilt. McKinley Sutton of Uniontown exhibited the reserve supreme, a commercial gilt worth $600. Third overall and earning $500 was the reserve commercial gilt owned by Chase Lillard of Abilene. In fourth was the Spot champion, which garnered $350 and was exhibited by James DeRouchey of Wamego. Brody Nemecek of Iola exhibited the fifth overall gilt, which was the reserve champion light AOB. The gilt earned a $250 premium.

Brooklynn Kerr from Dodge City was named champion in senior swine showmanship. The reserve champion was Kyanna Lankton of Le Roy. In the intermediate division, Calla Higbie from Quenemo was awarded the champion title. Reserve was Kyser Nemecek from Iola. Marley Sutton from Uniontown was named champion in the junior division. The reserve champion was McKinley Sutton of Uniontown.

Bryan Boggs of Buhler exhibited the grand champion market lamb, a 152 lb. entry from the blackface division that earned a $2,000 premium. The market lamb show was sponsored by Cargill. The reserve grand champion market lamb, a 138 lb. blackface, was shown by Tyra Meyer of Sylvan Grove. The lamb earned $1,000. Third overall, also from the blackface division, was owned by Jillian Keller of Piqua, and garnered $900. A blackface lamb exhibited by Lakyn Rookstool of Wamego was chosen as fourth overall and brought $600. Cody Coen of Elkhart exhibited the fifth overall market lamb, a Southdown earning $300.

The supreme registered breeding ewe, garnering a $500 premium, was the champion Southdown ewe, shown by Becca Paine from Hutchinson. The reserve supreme champion ewe was the champion Hampshire, led by Hannah Whetstone of Howard, who received a $300 premium. Third overall, worth $200, was the champion Dorset ewe owned by Emma Knappenberger from Olathe. The reserve champion Hampshire and fourth overall registered breeding ewe, earning $100, was shown by Brynn Boggs of Buhler. Maylee Reece from Lakin led the champion AOB, which finished fifth overall and received a $50 premium.

A ewe led by Clay Brillhart of Fort Scott took supreme champion honors in the commercial breeding ewe show. Brillhart’s ewe garnered a $500 premium. Owning the reserve supreme, worth $400, was Lakyn Rookstool of Wamego. The third overall commercial ewe, earning $300, was exhibited by Brynn Boggs of Buhler. A ewe led by Sadie Marchiano of Fort Scott claimed fourth overall and earned $200. Fifth overall was a commercial ewe exhibited by Clay Brillhart from Fort Scott, who received a $100 premium. Cargill sponsored both breeding ewe shows.

Haven Johnson from Assaria was awarded senior sheep showmanship honors, with Jillian Keller, Piqua, in reserve. Top showman in the intermediate division was Kynlee Dressler, Eudora. Emery Yoho, Yates Center, followed in reserve. In junior showmanship, Carleigh Abeldt, Herington, was champion showman. Reserve honors went to Coyler Williams, Lyons.

Lakyn Rookstool of Wamego showed the 69 lb. grand champion market goat, which earned a $2,000 premium. The reserve champion market goat was a 107 lb. entry exhibited by Erin Johnson, Towanda. Johnson earned a $1,000 premium. The market goat show was sponsored by Cargill. The third overall market goat, worth $750, was led by Jaci Falkenstein, Oswego. Mason Rookstool of Wamego showed the fourth overall market goat, which earned $500. Placing fifth overall and earning $400 was another entry from Erin Johnson of Towanda.

Raine Garten of Abilene showed the supreme champion commercial doe kid, for which she earned a $750 premium. Kenna Cooley of Louisburg exhibited the reserve supreme champion doe, worth $500. Third overall went to an entry from London Hilton of Eureka, which was worth $400. Chosen for fourth was a commercial doe owned by Jaci Falkenstein of Oswego that earned $300. Fifth overall, worth $200, was a doe shown by Mason Rookstool of Wamego. Cargill also sponsored the commercial doe kid show.

In senior goat showmanship, champion showman went to Kara Riffel, Westmoreland, and Raine Garten of Abilene claimed reserve. Crayton Deters of St. George won the intermediate showmanship division, with Brynn Boggs of Buhler coming in second. In the junior showmanship division, Abigail Morales of Garden City took champion showman honors, with Jayton Bogdahn, Moline, earning reserve.

KJLS presented $17,600 in scholarships to 11 exhibitors.

Receiving a $2,500 scholarship was Lawson Collins of Chanute. Kara Riffel of Westmoreland was awarded a $2,000 scholarship. Students receiving $1,800 stipends were Rachel Sebesta of Wilson and Madison Vaught from McLouth. Three students received $1,500 scholarships, including Clay Brillhart, Fort Scott; Clay Pelton, Paradise; and Elizabeth Wright, Olsburg; Kylie Fox, Marquette; Abi Lillard, Abilene; Regan Stramel, Winona; and Baylee Wulfkuhle, Berryton, each received a $1,250 scholarship.

Since the inception of the KJLS scholarship program in 1993, a total of 348 exhibitors have been awarded $490,500.

The LEAD Challenge allowed exhibitors to learn about current industry issues and apply that information in a competitive environment. All those entered in the challenge participated in the LEAD Listen &amp; Learn, showmanship, skills stations and interviews.

Exhibitors placing first through fifth in the senior division were Clay Brillhart, Fort Scott; Lane Higbie, Quenemo; Rachel Sebesta, Wilson; Noah Goss, Kanopolis; and Kara Riffel, Westmoreland. First through fifth in the intermediate division were, in order of finish, Calla Higbie, Quenemo; TJ Mills, Grenola; Addison Green Russell, Downs; Isabel Wright, Olsburg; and Whitley Frost, Esbon. In the junior division, first through fifth were Molly Hill, Baldwin; Katherine Bormann, Manhattan; Ruby Hill, Baldwin; Kealie Bryant, Garden City; and McKinley Sutton, Uniontown.

A team from Kansas State University (K-State) won first place in the senior college competition at the Mid-America Classic Judging Contest, held in conjunction with KJLS. A team from Texas Tech University took second. Trace Mulligan with K-State was the top scoring senior college individual. He was followed by Skyler Scotten, also from K-State. Butler Community College (BCC) won the sophomore division in the junior college contest, with Hutchinson Community College (HCC) finishing second. High individuals in the junior college sophomore contest were Paige Miller with BCC in first and Kyler Vernon, also with BCC, in second. A team from BCC also won the freshman division, while a team from Redlands Community College placed second. Kasey Johnson from HCC outscored all other freshmen. The second place freshman was Brody Nemecek from BCC.

The Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) and Kansas State University serve as major show sponsors. In addition to Cargill, Merck Animal Health and Seaboard Foods, other sponsors included Kansas Farm Bureau and Farm Bureau Financial Services, Friends of KJLS, the Kansas Department of Agriculture and American AgCredit. In addition to these groups, volunteers from across the state also help organize and put on the show.

Meyer received a $4,000 premium for her steer. The reserve champion steer, weighing 1,370 lbs., came from the crossbred division and was owned by Wesley Denton of Blue Rapids, who received a $2,000. Third overall, worth $1,000, went to the champion Chianina steer, owned by Thade Combs of Hutchinson. Placing fourth overall and earning a $750 premium was the champion Angus, exhibited by Nick Siemens from Towanda. Fifth went to the reserve champion crossbred, owned by Rilee McGraw of Garden City, who earned $500.McKenna Richardson of Eureka owned the supreme champion in the breeding heifer show, sponsored by Merck Animal Health. Richardson was awarded a $1,000 premium for her Limousin entry. Reserve supreme went to a Chianina heifer, earning $750, shown by Darla Fesmire, Bartlett. Third overall, which earned $500, went to the champion Percentage Simmental led by Abby Wood of Leavenworth. Kelsey Theis, also from Leavenworth, exhibited the champion Angus heifer that received fourth overall and $400. The fifth overall heifer, earning $300, was the reserve Percentage Simmental led by Lauren Aust from La Cygne.In the senior beef showmanship division, Wesley Denton from Blue Rapids was champion showman. Reserve went to Jody Mead of McPherson. In the intermediate division, Jase Beltz from Canton was named champion showman. Ava Jane Combs from Hutchinson was reserve. Reserve was awarded to Aubree McCurry from Hutchinson.Jenna DeRouchey of Wamego guided her 263 lb. dark crossbred barrow to the grand champion market hog title, which earned her $2,000. A 259 lb. dark crossbred owned by Brenden Anderson of Caney was reserve grand champion hog. Anderson’s entry garnered a $1,500 premium. The show was sponsored by Seaboard Foods. Third overall, worth $1,000, went to Hayden Englert of Washington, with his Yorkshire barrow. Tayte Leck of Neodesha owned the champion light AOB barrow that placed fourth overall and earned $750. Fifth overall, earning a $500 premium, was the reserve champion Yorkshire exhibited by Jack Gilliam of Washington.An entry from the light AOB division, owned by Abi Lillard of Abilene, was named supreme champion in the gilt show, also sponsored by Seaboard Foods. Lillard received a $750 premium for the gilt. McKinley Sutton of Uniontown exhibited the reserve supreme, a commercial gilt worth $600. Receiving a $2,500 scholarship was Lawson Collins of Chanute. Kara Riffel of Westmoreland was awarded a $2,000 scholarship. Students receiving $1,800 stipends were Rachel Sebesta of Wilson and Madison Vaught from McLouth. Three students received $1,500 scholarships, including Clay Brillhart, Fort Scott; Clay Pelton, Paradise; and Elizabeth Wright, Olsburg; Kylie Fox, Marquette; Abi Lillard, Abilene; Regan Stramel, Winona; and Baylee Wulfkuhle, Berryton, each received a $1,250 scholarship. Since the inception of the KJLS scholarship program in 1993, a total of 348 exhibitors have been awarded $490,500.The LEAD Challenge allowed exhibitors to learn about current industry issues and apply that information in a competitive environment. All those entered in the challenge participated in the LEAD Listen &amp; Learn, showmanship, skills stations and interviews. Exhibitors placing first through fifth in the senior division were Clay Brillhart, Fort Scott; Lane Higbie, Quenemo; Rachel Sebesta, Wilson; Noah Goss, Kanopolis; and Kara Riffel, Westmoreland. First through fifth in the intermediate division were, in order of finish, Calla Higbie, Quenemo; TJ Mills, Grenola; Addison Green Russell, Downs; Isabel Wright, Olsburg; and Whitley Frost, Esbon. In the junior division, first through fifth were Molly Hill, Baldwin; Katherine Bormann, Manhattan; Ruby Hill, Baldwin; Kealie Bryant, Garden City; and McKinley Sutton, Uniontown.A team from Kansas State University (K-State) won first place in the senior college competition at the Mid-America Classic Judging Contest, held in conjunction with KJLS. A team from Texas Tech University took second. Trace Mulligan with K-State was the top scoring senior college individual. He was followed by Skyler Scotten, also from K-State. Butler Community College (BCC) won the sophomore division in the junior college contest, with Hutchinson Community College (HCC) finishing second. High individuals in the junior college sophomore contest were Paige Miller with BCC in first and Kyler Vernon, also with BCC, in second. A team from BCC also won the freshman division, while a team from Redlands Community College placed second. Kasey Johnson from HCC outscored all other freshmen. The second place freshman was Brody Nemecek from BCC.The Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) and Kansas State University serve as major show sponsors. In addition to Cargill, Merck Animal Health and Seaboard Foods, other sponsors included Kansas Farm Bureau and Farm Bureau Financial Services, Friends of KJLS, the Kansas Department of Agriculture and American AgCredit. Sylvan Grove student wins grand champion market steer at KJLS

Ethel Mabel Ziegler,&nbsp;86, of&nbsp;Hays, Kansas, passed away on&nbsp;October 7, 
2020, at the Hays Medical Center.&nbsp; Ethel was born in&nbsp;Angelus, KS 
on&nbsp;December 24,1933, to Everet and Louise (Schwarz) Schroeder.&nbsp;She was a 
graduate of&nbsp;Grinnell High School.

Ethel&nbsp;was united in marriage to&nbsp;Leo Ziegler in Angelus, KS,&nbsp;on&nbsp;August
 10, 1954. They were married for 48 years until his death in 2002.&nbsp; She 
was a lifelong farmer and devout Catholic residing at the family farm 
near Collyer, KS.&nbsp; She was an accomplished seamstress during her life, 
sewing and knitting clothing for her fellow residents at Ascension 
Living till the very end.&nbsp; &nbsp;She was an avid sports fan, enjoyed card 
games, golf, puzzles and working the family farm.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was also actively
 involved in&nbsp;volunteer work.

Ethel&nbsp;is survived by her sons Allen Ziegler and wife Lesly of 
Littleton, CO, Kevin Ziegler and wife Jennifer of Colorado Springs, CO; 
grandchildren Dustin Benisch of Lee Summit, MO, Courtney Benisch of 
Chicago, IL, Katie Kellett of Corpus Christi, TX, Paige Michalik of 
Colorado Springs.&nbsp; Eric Ziegler of Colorado Springs, CO, Jacob and 
Genessa Ziegler of Littleton, CO; brothers Ray and Don Schroeder of 
Angelus, KS; and sister Carol Maurath of Reno, NV.

Ethel was preceded in death by&nbsp;both parents, her husband Leo, 
daughter Sandra, brothers James and Kenney Schroeder and sisters Doris 
and Betty.

Funeral service will be held at&nbsp;10:30 am, Saturday, Oct. 17, 
2020, at&nbsp;St. Michael Catholic Church, Collyer, KS.&nbsp;Fr. Charles Steier 
will be officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Alice Mildred (Foster) Kolsky, 92, a resident of Sunporch Nursing 
Home of Dodge City, shortly before 9:00 am October 7, 2020 slipped 
peacefully into the Loving Arms of her Savior. 

She was born November 2, 1927, in 
Dresden KS, the youngest of seven children of Elfred and Bessie 
(Boardman) Foster. Alice was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church. 
She attended school in Dresden KS until the school closed, graduating 
from high school at nearby Jennings KS in 1946 in August of the same 
year she was married. She lived and worked in Oberlin KS for several 
years. Alice moved to Dodge City with her children in 1965. There she 
started to work at High Plains Journal and remained there for the next 
25 years until her retirement.

She loved to dance the “Jitter Bug” of which she was quite 
proficient. She enjoyed years of bowling and horseshoes and has many 
trophies to show for it! She was always keeping busy, participated in 
many activities at the Senior Center such as line dancing and wood 
carving.

Survivors are daughter Paula Herd of St. George Utah, son Charles and
 (Jean) Kolsky of Dodge City KS, son Robert Kolsky of Dodge City KS, 
four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and four great-great 
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers and three sisters and a great granddaughter.

Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 1:00 
pm at the Dresden Cemetery, Dresden, Kansas where she will be jointed 
with her past loved ones. Visitation will be Monday from 1:00 pm to 5:00
 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.

Donald P. “Don” Helwig, 79, Hays, died Monday, October 5, 2020, at his home.

He was born August 26, 1941, in Webster,
 South Dakota, the son of Peter and Elizabeth (Block) Helwig. He was a 
1959 graduate of Waubay High School in Waubay, South Dakota. Don worked 
in the oil field, on the railroad, and in mining in South Dakota. He 
loved fishing, sports, music, being outside, and was an amazing 
entertainer. Don was known as “Donny Cash," for his ability to sing 
Johnny Cash songs. If anyone needed anything, Don was always there for 
them.&nbsp; He had an ability to make people laugh and lived a very full 
life.

Survivors include two daughters: Ronda 
Releford of Surprise, AZ and Roxanna Fullerton of Elkhart, KS, three 
sisters: Gladys Grubbs of Scottsdale, AZ, Esther Loterbauer of South 
Dakota, and his twin sister Diana Gaona of Russell, six grandchildren, 
six great grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, 
Jason Cambell, his parents, one brother: Clarence Helwig, and three 
sisters: Evelyn Hamman, Violet Maxwell, and Deloris Wieger.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm 
on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays, with Father

Lorna “Sue” Legleiter, age 76, of WaKeeney, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2020, in Hays.&nbsp; She was born November 22, 1943, in Hays, Kansas, to Alfred “Sonny” and Berniece M. (Johnson) Gross.&nbsp; Sue was a WaKeeney resident for over 50 years.

On June 19, 1965, she was united in marriage to Melvin W. Legleiter, in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; They enjoyed 42 years of marriage before Melvin passed away April 17, 2008.&nbsp; Sue was a retired bookkeeper from her husband’s trucking company.&nbsp; She spent her time reading countless novels and enjoyed sitting in her backyard, watching the birds at her birdfeeder, and talking with her neighbors and with her neighbors’ pets.&nbsp; She loved animals of all sorts.&nbsp; Sue also enjoyed visiting with people.&nbsp; At any family event, you could find her in the midst of people talking about life, giving her opinion on matters, and laughing in her distinctive way.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed visiting with her nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

One of Sue’s guilty pleasures was smoking, and over the last several decades, Sue found herself relegated to the “smokers’ section” of many places she visited.&nbsp; There, Sue talked with and made countless short-term friendships.&nbsp; Because of her easy laugh and disarming personality, Sue could get people to talk about life in those few minutes together.&nbsp; It was always a wonder to witness Sue bring friendship to others in these small ways.&nbsp; She collected angel figurines, as well as anything dealing with owls.&nbsp; When Sue could, she found great adventure and joy taking cruises with her sister and traveling to Maine to visit with her.&nbsp; Most of all, Sue enjoyed her two grandsons, Michael and Stephen, who brought great joy to her life.

She is survived by a daughter, Christine and husband Tony Gabel of Hays; two grandchildren, Michael and Stephen of Hays; a brother, Eugene Gross of Cary, North Carolina; a sister, Patricia Fellers of Calais, Maine.&nbsp; Sue was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at Christ the King Catholic Church, WaKeeney.&nbsp; Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening, from 5 to 7, at the funeral home in WaKeeney. &nbsp;There will also be a short visitation one hour prior to Mass at the Parish Center (across from the church).

He was born May 24, 1943 in Kansas City, Kansas to Joseph and Mary (Miller) Kinderknecht. He graduated from Ellis High School in 1961. On August 8, 1964 he married Charlene Klaus. Thomas was a sanitation worker for the City of Ellis, Kansas. He enjoyed playing pinochle, bowling, “scrapping and junking”, family BBQ’s and collecting Coors memorabilia. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Ellis. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Kinderknecht of Hays; a son, Dennis Kinderknecht of Hays; two daughters, Jackie Lee (Oliver) of Ellis and Michelle Windholz (Matthew) of Ellis; a half-brother, Joe Day of Ellis; a half-sister, Kris Bollig of Hays; five grandchildren, T.J. Louis Tovar Sanchez, 97, died Thursday, October 8, 2020, in Dodge City.

He was born in the Mexican Village, Dodge City on August 19, 1923, the
 son of Soledad Sanchez and Florentina Tovar. He was a lifetime area 
resident and member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge 
City. He worked for Centel as a meter reader for many years, working for
 them he received the President’s Award and the Centel Corporation Man 
of the Year in the State of Kansas. He was very involved in the Dodge 
City Community being the first Hispanic mayor of Dodge City along with 
the first Hispanic elected to the city commission. He coached and 
umpired for the Dodge City Softball Association for 25 years becoming 
president of the Dodge City Recreation Commission along with Umpire in 
Chief. Louis also served as the chairman of the Diocesan and Development
 Drive, Great Plains Development Committee, Ford County Regional 
Planning Committee, Counsel on Aging, and was a member of the GI Forum. 
Louis credited his parents for instilling the values and ethics for how 
he led his life. He also was a resource to the Heritage Center in Dodge 
City regarding the Mexican Village. Louis and Linda were widely known 
for their ball room dancing skills.

On October 23, 1943 he married Linda E. Esquibel in Dodge City. She preceded him in death on November 20, 2007.

Survivors include: his 3 daughters, Linda Roush, Dodge City, Victoria
 Smith, Wichita, Kansas, and Veronica Sanchez, Leesburg, Virginia; 1 
daughter-in-law, Marilyn Sanchez, Mission, Kansas; 1 sister, Anita 
Morales, Wichita, Kansas; 2 grandsons, Kenneth Roush, Wichita, Kansas 
and Bradford Smith, Phoenix, Arizona; 2 granddaughters, Erin Peters, 
Mission, Kansas, Kansas and Kelley Sanchez, Connecticut; and 6 great 
grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Robert D. 
Sanchez, 5 brothers, Alvin, Rudy, Frank, Gavino, and Isaac Sanchez, and 6
 sisters, Lena, Ramona, Asuncion, Luz, Trinie, and Mary.

Services will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas’ top public health official warned Friday that the state is “losing the battle” against the coronavirus as it reported another record increase in new cases.

The state Department of Health and Environment said Kansas reported 1,855 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases since Wednesday, an increase of 2.9%, to bring the total for the pandemic to 65,807. The state also reported another 40 COVID-19-related deaths, increasing the pandemic total to 763.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.snco.us/HD/document/media%20releases/10082020_Updates_to_COVID_Deaths_on_SCHD_Dashboard.pdf" target="_blank">Twenty-six of those</a>&nbsp;were reported Thursday in Shawnee County, where the local health department reviewed previous death certificates from the Topeka area.

“Other states are doing bad, and we’re doing worst than most,” Dr. Lee Norman, the head of the state health department, said during an interview. “We’re losing the battle right now.”

The state saw an average of 671 new cases a day for the seven days ending Friday, breaking the state’s previous record of 667 for the seven days ending Sept. 28. The state has seen that seven-day average hit or exceed 600 cases per day for five of the six reports it has issued in the past two weeks.

Norman&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-hutchinson-prisons-kansas-wichita-6fde15e9983c7e7382be97b6f6a65aed">predicted last week&nbsp;</a>that the state’s reporting of new cases could increase to as many as 900 a day on average in the coming months. COVID-19-related deaths have for about a month hovered around 1.1% of reported cases, but with Friday’s report, the figure was 1.16%, the highest in almost two months.

The actual number of cases is thought to be much higher because people can be infected without feeling ill or they may have only minor symptoms, and because of a lack of testing, particularly early in the pandemic. Norman said earlier this week that between 4% and 4.5% of the state’s population probably has been infected since the pandemic reached Kansas in early March — between 116,000 and 131,000 cases.

Norman blamed the increases on residents’ refusal to consistently follow public health guidelines for mask-wearing, social distancing and avoiding large public gatherings. He said people need to do all of them in tandem to check the virus’ spread.

“One of the things that we just have to collectively as a state start working together with is what are the social and psychological underpinnings for the reasons why for we’re going the direction we’re going,” Norman said. “Our curve is going absolutely the wrong direction.”

Following a successful tenure of more than two decades, Francine Hestermann plans to retire in October 2021 from her position as Chief Financial Officer for the Fort Hays State University Foundation. She joined the FHSU Foundation as CFO in 1997 and says the thought of retiring is bittersweet.

“I’m looking forward to retirement, but I’m going to be leaving an incredible job that has brought me joy over the last 23 years,” Hestermann said. “I’ve met so many wonderful people through my career and have been humbled by the generosity of our Fort Hays State alumni and donors.”

Thanks to donor support from 1997 to today, Hestermann and the FHSU Foundation have created more than 700 new funds in support of Fort Hays State University. In addition, they have more than doubled the number of endowed funds, which are those over $10,000 that are invested and live on in perpetuity.

She has seen a great amount of growth and change through her years serving as Chief Financial Officer. Net assets for the FHSU Foundation have grown from $21 million to more than $116 million to date, and its staff has grown from seven employees to 21.&nbsp;

The FHSU Foundation is currently in the capstone year of its Journey Campaign with a goal of raising $100 million by Homecoming 2021. Hestermann has served in her role through three prior capital campaigns for Fort Hays State: the Centennial Campaign, the Cornerstone Campaign, and the Power of One Scholarship Campaign.

Hestermann is proud to have built an organized and stable accounting team – one that has received an unqualified audit opinion, with no adjusting entries proposed, for all of her 23 years as CFO.&nbsp;

“Our Foundation staff has been amazing, but I’ve also enjoyed working with our Board of Trustees, professors, staff and students,” she said. “I could not find a better place to work.”&nbsp;

She joined the FHSU Foundation as CFO in 1997 and says the thought of retiring is bittersweet.“I’m looking forward to retirement, but I’m going to be leaving an incredible job that has brought me joy over the last 23 years,” Hestermann said. “I’ve met so many wonderful people through my career and have been humbled by the generosity of our Fort Hays State alumni and donors.”Thanks to donor support from 1997 to today, Hestermann and the FHSU Foundation have created more than 700 new funds in support of Fort Hays State University. In addition, they have more than doubled the number of endowed funds, which are those over $10,000 that are invested and live on in perpetuity.She has seen a great amount of growth and change through her years serving as Chief Financial Officer. Net assets for the FHSU Foundation have grown from $21 million to more than $116 million to date, and its staff has grown from seven employees to 21.&nbsp;The FHSU Foundation is currently in the capstone year of its Journey Campaign with a goal of raising $100 million by Homecoming 2021. Longtime CFO at Fort Hays State Foundation plans to retire next year

The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin a field survey along U.S. 281 in Russell County starting Oct. 12.

Crews will be surveying approximately 11 miles of U.S. 281 starting at Land Road and ending at the west K-18 junction to gather information for the detailed design of a proposed pavement and shoulder widening project.

Activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor. Work is expected to be completed by the end of October, weather permitting.

Crews will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property, if access is needed. Michael Selley, field survey project manager, will oversee the survey for KDOT.

Survey work planned on U.S. 281 in Russell County

WASHINGTON (AP) — The second presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden is officially off.

The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates confirmed Friday that the Oct. 15 faceoff would be scrapped. The decision was made a day after the commission announced the debate would take place “virtually” because Trump had contracted the coronavirus.

Trump balked at holding the debate in that format, and Biden scheduled a town hall with ABC News for that night once Trump said he would not participate.

Trump’s team later countered with a call to hold the debates as scheduled once the president’s doctor said he would be cleared to hold public events beginning on Saturday.

But the commission said it would not reverse its decision not to have the candidates on stage together, citing an abundance of caution with health concerns — particularly for the town-hall-style debate that was set to feature questions from average voters.

The third debate, scheduled for Oct. 22 in Nashville, Tennessee, is still on.

2nd Trump, Biden debate is officially canceled

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita State University is conducting an internal investigation into allegations that men’s basketball coach Gregg Marshall mistreated players, the school and Marshall have confirmed.

<a href="https://watchstadium.com/sources-wichita-states-gregg-marshall-punched-player-choked-assistant-10-08-2020/">Stadium</a>, a multiplatform sports network, said the inquiry began after the university learned it was conducting an investigation in which it interviewed 36 players and former coaches.

Former Wichita State forward Shaq Morris told Stadium he was punched twice by Marshall, the school’s all-time winningest coach, during an October 2015 practice, and former guard Ty Taylor said he saw it happen.

They were the only players who agreed to be identified; the others said they feared retribution and community backlash because Marshall’s winning record has made him popular, Stadium reported.

“I love my teammates, the city and Wichita State,” said Morris, who played at Wichita State from 2014-18. “But if I could go back to that day when he punched me, I would have left.”

Taylor transferred to the University of North Carolina Wilmington after the 2015-16 season.

Last spring, six scholarship Shockers players plus a walk-on also transferred. In addition, 2020 commit Ja’Dun Michael asked out of his letter of intent.

Wichita State said in a statement Friday that it “acknowledges the allegations within its Men’s Basketball program brought forth by media” and that the investigation was being handled in an “expeditious and deliberate manner.”

“We have received full cooperation from university staff, coaches, and current student-athletes, and Coach Gregg Marshall and support any individual who chooses to participate in order to conduct a fair, impartial and thorough investigation,” the statement said, adding that team activities will continue as scheduled while the probe is underway.

Marshall on Thursday wrote in a text message to&nbsp;<a href="https://theathletic.com/2123302/2020/10/08/gregg-marshall-under-investigation-by-wichita-state-for-allegations-of-misconduct/">The Athletic</a>, a subscription-based sports website, that he was fully participating in the process.

“I look forward to having it wrapped up as I continue to focus my energy on our team,” said Marshall, the school’s all-time winningest coach. He did not immediately respond to an email from the AP to his assistant or a phone message seeking comment.
