ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The trade began to hit Von Miller as he toddled past the photo gallery of great moments that decorate the Denver Broncos headquarters.

The featured shot is the one of him knocking the ball and, in effect, the Lombardi Trophy, from Cam Newton's grasp five years and nine months ago.

"Always have Super Bowl 50,” a choked-up Miller said on a gray Monday morning as snowflakes danced into the black Cadillac Escalade's open back window and melted on his tie-dye hoodie.

“Seeing the pictures as I was walking out made me tear up.”

Miller is no longer the face of the franchise in Denver.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/pgraham34/status/1455235920869789698?s=20">loquacious linebacker</a>&nbsp;is headed West to join Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey with the Los Angeles Rams in a trade that surprised him.

“It’s all kind of new,” said Miller, who insisted he didn't ask out. “I’m on my way to L.A.”

“Great team. Been a huge fan of Aaron Donald for a long time,” Miller said. “They’ve got a great defense. Jalen Ramsey, Leonard Floyd, all these guys. I’m excited."

Two people familiar with the deal that wasn't immediately announced by either team told The Associated Press that the Rams are sending the Broncos second- and third-round picks in the 2022 draft for the perennial Pro Bowler.

The Broncos also are picking up $9 million of the $9.722 million left on his contract.

Miller’s trophy case includes his Super Bowl 50 MVP award for leading Denver to a 24-10 win over heavily favored Carolina following the 2015 season and 2011 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honor.

He’s an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, seven-time AP All-Pro and a member of the league’s 2010s All-Decade team. And he’s the Broncos’ franchise leader with 110½ sacks in the regular season and has another 6½ in the playoffs.

“It's hard to put the emotions into words," Miller said. "It's always tough whenever you leave. I love all my fans. I love Broncos country. When I said Broncos for life, I meant that. It was an honor and a privilege to play here.

And it looks as though the Broncos (4-4) are folding their hand.

With Miller watching from the sideline because of a sprained ankle he said should be fine by next weekend, the Broncos edged Washington&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-sports-denver-broncos-justin-simmons-washington-football-team-95941260d6fc256c6073d685996f424e">17-10</a>&nbsp;Sunday, narrowly avoiding their first winless October since 1967.

But it took two defensive stops in the final minute because the Broncos bungled their last possession following safety Justin Simmons' seemingly game-sealing end zone interception with 49 seconds left.

In between Teddy Bridgewater inexplicably throwing an incompletion to stop the clock with 32 seconds left and saving Washington a timeout, the Broncos fumbled twice, losing the second one at their 24 with 21 seconds remaining.

That served as a fitting farewell to Miller, who never got back to the playoffs with Denver after leading their Super Bowl parade.

Plagued by instability at quarterback, unimaginative offensive play-calling, draft busts and free-agent flops, the once-proud franchise is mired in one of its longest runs of mediocrity since the 1960s.

“This team, they’re going to start winning soon,” Miller said. “I wanted to be a part of it to fix it.”

Miller joins a Rams team that's tied with the Packers and Cardinals for the NFL's best record at 7-1. But the path to the Super Bowl — at the Rams' home, SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California — appears much rockier in the NFC with Dallas at 6-1 and defending champion Tampa Bay sitting at 6-2.

Only one team in the AFC has more than five wins: Tennessee is 6-2 but just lost cornerstone Derrick Henry to a foot injury. The Rams host the Titans on Sunday night.

Miller expects to step right into the Rams lineup after missing his final Broncos game with a sprained left ankle.

Miller, who's in the final year of his contract, was sidelined all of last year with a dislocated ankle tendon. He had a splashy comeback, winning the AFC Defensive Player of the Month honor in September.

Individual income tax collections were $301.6 million which is $46.6 million, or 18.3%, more than the estimate. That is $17.9 million, or 6.3%, more than October 2020. Corporate income tax collections were $40.0 million for the month. That is $25.0 million, or 166.8%, more than the estimate and $13.9 million, or 53.3%, more than the same month of last year.

Retail sales tax collections were $227.7 million, which is 8.4%, or $17.7 million, more than the estimate. Those collections are $16.7 million, or 7.9%, more than last October. Compensating use tax collections were $67.6 million which is $12.6 million, or 22.9%, more than the estimate. That is a growth of $16.9 million, or 33.3%, over the same month of 2020.

“The difficult steps taken early on in the COVID-19 pandemic have helped the state’s economy not only rebound quicker than expected but has also moved the state towards a sustainable and healthy economic future,”&nbsp;Secretary of Revenue Mark Burghart said.

The last time the state had tax collections below the monthly estimate was July 2020.

The Consensus Revenue Estimating Group, comprised of the Department of Revenue, Division of Budget, Legislative Research Department, and economists from the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, and Wichita State University, will meet November 10.

Geary Gene Schafer, 80, of Gorham, Kansas, died on Sunday, October 
31, 2021, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Geary was born on June 10, 1941, in Milberger, Kansas, the son of 
Elmer and Esther I. (Nuss) Schafer.&nbsp; He grew up in the Milberger, 
Galatia, Russell and Gorham, Kansas area and attended Milberger Rural 
Schools.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Judith Arlene Dumler in 1961.&nbsp; 
From this union Geary and Judith were blessed with raising two children 
Tonya and Terry.&nbsp; Judith preceded him in death on June 28, 1985.&nbsp; Geary 
found love for a second time and was united in marriage to Iris Emma 
Schroeder on October 04, 2001, in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Geary worked most 
all his life as a truck driver working in the oilfield industry, Pepsi 
and Abco.&nbsp; He was a longtime member of the National Rifle Association 
and American Anglers Association.&nbsp; He enjoyed hunting, fishing and 
collecting aluminum cans.&nbsp; Most of all he loved spending time with his 
wife, kids, grandkids, great grandkids and extended family.

Surviving family include his wife Iris Schafer of the home; daughter 
Tonya Cullen and husband Jeffrey of Gorham, Kansas; son Terry Schafer of
 Salina, Kansas; brother Robert Schafer and sister Roberta Hupfer and 
fiancée Jim Mermis all of Gorham, Kansas; 5 grandkids and 6 great

Terri J. Rather, 65, of Salina, Kansas, died on Saturday, October 30,
 2021, at the Eaglecrest Retirement Community in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; God 
blessed Terri with a holy death and took her home to rest in the arms of
 Jesus to await the resurrection of the dead.

God gave to Terri (Pfortmiller) Rather the gift of earthly life on 
February 18, 1956, born to Orville and Loretta (Blank) Pfortmiller in 
Russell, Kansas. &nbsp;God gave her the gift of new life in Christ through 
the sacrament of Holy Baptism on March 4, 1956, and she was confirmed in
 this Christian faith on May 17, 1970, at Peace Lutheran Church in 
Natoma, Kansas. &nbsp;On May 18, 1991, Terri and Ron Rather were united in 
marriage.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Salina.&nbsp; May our 
Savior, Jesus Christ, who came for us all, give comfort and strength to 
Terri’s family and friends through His promise, “I am the resurrection 
and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and 
whoever lives and believes in me will never die!” (John 11:24-26).

Terri is survived by her father, Orville of Natoma, Kansas; her 
husband, Ron Rather of Salina, Kansas; son Clayton Slipke and wife 
Lindsay of Klamath Falls, Oregon, sister Becky Mangus and husband Gary 
of Winfield, Kansas, brothers Ricky Pfortmiller and wife Joy of Natoma,

 2021, at the Eaglecrest Retirement Community in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; God 
blessed Terri with a holy death and took her home to rest in the arms of
 Jesus to await the resurrection of the dead.God gave to Terri (Pfortmiller) Rather the gift of earthly life on 
February 18, 1956, born to Orville and Loretta (Blank) Pfortmiller in 
Russell, Kansas. &nbsp;God gave her the gift of new life in Christ through 
the sacrament of Holy Baptism on March 4, 1956, and she was confirmed in
 this Christian faith on May 17, 1970, at Peace Lutheran Church in 
Natoma, Kansas. &nbsp;On May 18, 1991, Terri and Ron Rather were united in 
marriage.She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Salina.&nbsp; May our 
Savior, Jesus Christ, who came for us all, give comfort and strength to 
Terri’s family and friends through His promise, “I am the resurrection 
and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and 
whoever lives and believes in me will never die!” (John 11:24-26).Terri is survived by her father, Orville of Natoma, Kansas; her 
husband, Ron Rather of Salina, Kansas; son Clayton Slipke and wife 
Lindsay of Klamath Falls, Oregon, sister Becky Mangus and husband Gary 
of Winfield, Kansas, brothers Ricky Pfortmiller and wife Joy of Natoma, 
Kansas and Scott Pfortmiller and wife Jennifer of St. John,<a></a> Kansas, and five dearly beloved nieces.She was preceded in death by her mother, Loretta Pfortmiller on August 29th, 2002.A celebration of Terri’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday,

Terri J. Rather

Josephine Marie Marshall (Sandi) Kinser, 75, of Concordia, passed 
away peacefully at Park Villa nursing home in Clyde KS on October 22, 
2021. She was born October 1, 1946, in Enid, OK and was adopted at the 
age of nine years by Paul and Josephine Marshall.

She married Jerry Kinser on March 5, 1966, and they were blessed with two daughters: Jolene and Janell.

She graduated from Pratt High School and earned her Bachelor of 
Science in Elementary Education from Ft. Hays State University and her 
master’s degree in library science from Kansas State University. She was
 a life-long educator, teaching in Weskan, Glasco, and Miltonvale 
schools and serving as a district librarian.

She was a leader and volunteer in her community, a member of Delta 
Kappa Gamma, Kansas State Board of Regents, and several other 
professional organizations. She was a faithful servant and member of 
Fellowship Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Josephine 
Marshall; parents-in-law, Joseph and Josephine Kinser; brothers-in-law, 
Tim Kinser and John Stanley; sister-in-law, Kay Reedy.

Survivors: Husband, Jerry Kinser of Clyde; and daughters, Jolene Girard (Patrick) of Clyde; Janell McMillan (Scott) of Topeka.

Grandchildren: Paige Shafferman (Jeff) of Altoona, IA; Stephen 
McMillan (Emmelina) of Meriden, KS; Dorian Fahey (Brett) of Clifton, KS;
 Joseph McMillan (Susan) of Topeka, KS; Elias Girard and Adria Girard of
 Hays, KS; and Scott McMillan of Topeka, KS.

Great-grandchildren: Jack Shafferman, Elizabeth, Danny, and Nova

Josephine (Sandi) Marie Marshall Kinser

Rose Ann, “Rosie” to her family and friends, 91, was welcomed to her 
heavenly home on October 30, 2021.&nbsp; 

“Welcome Home good and faithful 
servant."

She was born September 11, 1930, in the family farmhouse in Stratton, 
NE to Mary (Hulbl) and Bohumel Faimon.&nbsp; She had a&nbsp; strong bond with her 
twin brother Rich and they were intuitive to each other’s needs.&nbsp; Rudy, 
her older brother took Rosie under his wing.&nbsp; He protected her and 
influenced her with the gift of music.&nbsp; Rose loved playing the organ, 
piano and accordion.&nbsp; She freely danced the polka with ease!

Her only sister, Sr. Agatha Faimon, Community of the Holy Spirit, has
 been her dedicated older sister.&nbsp; She has devoted her past years 
tending to Rosie’s needs, which allowed Rosie to remain at home for as 
long as she could.The family is very appreciative for Sr. Agatha’s love 
and compassion.

On April 25th, 1955 Rosie married her sweetheart, Charles Pianalto.&nbsp; 
She was quickly accepted into his Italian family of 16 siblings. Even in
 her last stages of her illness, she would mouth the words to their 
wedding dance, “Blue Skirt Waltz”.

To this union, five children were given as gifts from God.&nbsp; Joe 
(deceased), Tony, Jeanette, Mary Ellen and Ed.&nbsp; At the age of 50, 
Charlie passed away.&nbsp; With the help of God, family and friends, she&nbsp; 
raised and influenced them to become respectful, compassionate and 
loving adults.

Later in life, Rose married Urban Baalman(deceased).

Some of Rose’s most cherished times included weekend family fishing 
adventures, Christmas gatherings , singing around the piano during 
holidays, dancing around&nbsp; in the living room,&nbsp; gardening, painting and 
crafting.&nbsp; Rose enjoyed traveling to Europe with Sr. Agatha. They spent 
time connecting with family in Czechoslovakia, speaking with their 
cousins in Czech and exploring family heritage.&nbsp; Rosie loved hollering 
“Bingo” and playing slots!&nbsp; She enjoyed organizing gatherings and was 
defined as a ‘people lover’.

Prior to the onset of dementia which robbed her&nbsp; body,&nbsp; sight, mind 
and spirit, Rose had a huge personality, smile and generous,&nbsp; humble 
spirit.&nbsp; Her personal integrity, strong determinate will and 
compassionate heart of service were immense.&nbsp; These facts do not begin 
to convey how much she was loved and respected.

This respect for others was evident in the multiple positions she 
held throughout life….. being a loving&nbsp; Christian wife and mother,&nbsp; a 
country school teacher, Boy Scout den leader, Catholic Religious 
Educator,&nbsp; liturgical musician, Pediatric nurse aide , sharing her love 
with nieces and nephews along with leading the senior Catholics in 
Harvest House were just a few of her ways to live discipleship.

Rosie’s strong faith in God helped her survive many heartaches, 
losses and struggles. Those that have departed ahead of her include: 
Charlie, Urb, her parents, brothers Rich and Rudy,&nbsp; son Joe along with 
his family,&nbsp; Shirley,&nbsp; Anne and Jennifer and a host of family and&nbsp; 
friends.

Survivors that will miss her immensely include:&nbsp; her sister, Sr. 
Agatha Faimon, daughters Mary Ellen and Jeanette Hermes (Bill),&nbsp; sons 
Tony (Wanda) , Ed (Sheila) , grandchildren, great grand-children along 
with nieces, nephews and in-laws.&nbsp; May her spirit live on through them.

Her family wishes to thank all those near and far who have assisted 
through this journey.&nbsp; May God bless you for all your prayers, loving 
words, notes, care, presence and support&nbsp; during Rosie’s illness.&nbsp; Your 
compassion has not gone unnoticed.&nbsp; We truly appreciate all that you

Rose Pianalto

The Rev. James E. Baker, 84, died on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at Hays 
Medical Center in Hays.  Father Jim was born on April 4, 1937, in Erie, 
PA, where he grew up the second of three sons born to Robert and 
Genevieve Baker.  He completed grade school at St. George School in Erie
 in June of 1951. 

On September 14, 1951, he entered the Pontifical 
College Josephinum at Columbus, Ohio where he completed high school, 
college and four years of graduate school in theology. He was ordained 
to the priesthood for the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City in St. 
Thuribius Chapel at the Josephinum on May 25, 1963 by Archbishop Egidio 
Vaggnozzi, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States at the time. Father 
Jim’s first priestly assignment was assistant at St. Anthony Church, 
Liberal (1963-1965); subsequently assistant at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 
Dodge City (1965-1969); assistant at St. John the Evangelist, Hoisington
 (1969-1970). Father Jim was appointed to his first pastorate at St. 
Helen, Hugoton and St. Alphonsus, Satanta in 1970 and he served there 
until 1980 when be became pastor of St John the Evangelist, Hoisington 
(1980-1984). 
At the request of Bishop Stanley G. Schlarman, in August 1984 Father 
Baker entered graduate school in Canon Law at St. Paul University, 
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. After receiving a licentiate degree in June 
1986 Father Jim returned to the diocese where he served as Chancellor 
and later as Vicar General until October 1990. While assigned to the 
Chancery Office Father Jim also served as pastor at Immaculate Heart of 
Mary, Windthorst along with St. George, Bucklin and St Joseph, 
Greensburg (1986-1990). For a few months (Jan-May, 1990) he also served
 as Temporary Administrator of St. Mary’s, Hodgeman County. 
In October 1990, primarily to be closer to his seriously ill parents, 
Father Baker accepted an assignment as Associate Vicar at Our Lady of 
Lourdes Parish, Dunedin, Florida. His father died November 22, 1990 and
 his mother died April 13, 1991 and Father Jim returned to the Diocese 
of Dodge City where he was appointed Judicial Vicar for the Diocese and 
also served very briefly (April-June 1991) as Parochial Vicar at Sacred 
Heart Cathedral before being assigned as pastor at Holy Rosary, Medicine
 Lodge and St. John, Kiowa (1991-1993). He was appointed pastor at St. 
Lawrence, Jetmore, St. Anthony, Hanston and Holy Rosary, Burdett 
(1993-1997). He was appointed pastor of St. Mary, Garden City 
(1997-2006). He also served as priest supervisor at St. Alphonsus, 
Satanta (2002-2006). Father Jim retired from being the Judicial Vicar 
of the Diocese and pastor of St. Mary’s effective November 20, 2006. In
 retirement he continued to serve as judge on the Diocesan Tribunal as 
well as a judge on the Tribunal of the Archdiocese for the Military 
Services, USA, Washington, D.C. 
Not only was Father Baker privileged to serve the Church as a Priest and
 Canon Lawyer he also served the youth of Southwest Kansas by his 
activity in Santa Fe Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America. He began his
 volunteer work in scouting in 1963, serving as the treasurer of the 
newly formed Pack 47, sponsored by St. Anthony Church in Liberal. In 
February 1971 he became scoutmaster of Troop 188, at Rotary sponsored 
troop in Hugoton. Over the years he has served as District Chairman in 
all three districts of the council: (Cimarron River, Liberal, High 
Plains, Dodge City and Buffalo Range, Garden City). On November 15, 
1975 he received the District Award of Merit. Having completed the 
national requirements of Woodbadge Courses, NC-129 as a member of the 
Owl Patrol, he served on the staff of many other Woodbadge courses and 
in 1994 he was asked to serve as Scoutmaster of Woodbadge Course C 11 
L-94. He also served on the Executive Board of the Santa Fe Trail 
Council beginning in 1972. On January 20, 1980 the Diocese of Dodge 
City presented him with the St. George Award. On March 7, 1981 the 
Council presented him with the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award a 
Boy Scouts of America Council can give a volunteer scouter. 
Father Jim loved to travel. He has vacationed in all 50 states and the 
District of Columbia, his favorite being the coast of Oregon and the 
coast of Maine and the state of Alaska. He traveled to Europe twice, 
concentrating the first time on Austria and second on Italy (Rome). He 
was in Canada many times, living there for two years (1984-1986). He 
spent many most enjoyable times at Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch, 
Walsenburg, Colorado and went every summer for a week or more to 
Southwest Colorado in the Durango area. He also enjoyed many cruises to
 Mexico, Alaska, through the Panama Canal, the Mexican Riviera and 
Hawaii. In retirement Father Jim enjoyed his work at Garnand Funeral 
Home in Garden City as a driver and evening attendant. 
He is survived by 2 Sisters-In-Law- Barbara Baker of Fredericksburg, VA
 and Patricia Baker of Edinboro, PA, 5 Nephews- Robert, Michael, James, 
Mark &amp; Joseph, 2 Nieces- Kathleen and Dr. Christina Marie, and 6 
Grand Nieces and 5 Grand Nephews. He was preceded in death by his 
Parents and 2 Brothers- Robert Baker and Dr. Ronald Baker. 
Vigil Service will be at 7:00 PM Thursday and Funeral Mass will be at 
10:30 AM Friday both at St Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City. 
Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call
 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 P M Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden 
City.

Father Baker accepted an assignment as Associate Vicar at Our Lady of 
Lourdes Parish, Dunedin, Florida. His father died November 22, 1990 and
 his mother died April 13, 1991 and Father Jim returned to the Diocese 
of Dodge City where he was appointed Judicial Vicar for the Diocese and 
also served very briefly (April-June 1991) as Parochial Vicar at Sacred 
Heart Cathedral before being assigned as pastor at Holy Rosary, Medicine
 Lodge and St. John, Kiowa (1991-1993). He was appointed pastor at St. 
Lawrence, Jetmore, St. Anthony, Hanston and Holy Rosary, Burdett 
(1993-1997). He was appointed pastor of St. Mary, Garden City 
(1997-2006). He also served as priest supervisor at St. Alphonsus, 
Satanta (2002-2006). Father Jim retired from being the Judicial Vicar 
of the Diocese and pastor of St. Mary’s effective November 20, 2006. In
 retirement he continued to serve as judge on the Diocesan Tribunal as 
well as a judge on the Tribunal of the Archdiocese for the Military 
Services, USA, Washington, D.C. 
Not only was Father Baker privileged to serve the Church as a Priest and
 Canon Lawyer he also served the youth of Southwest Kansas by his 
activity in Santa Fe Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America. He began his
 volunteer work in scouting in 1963, serving as the treasurer of the 
newly formed Pack 47, sponsored by St. Anthony Church in Liberal. In 
February 1971 he became scoutmaster of Troop 188, at Rotary sponsored 
troop in Hugoton. Over the years he has served as District Chairman in 
all three districts of the council: (Cimarron River, Liberal, High 
Plains, Dodge City and Buffalo Range, Garden City). On November 15, 
1975 he received the District Award of Merit. Having completed the 
national requirements of Woodbadge Courses, NC-129 as a member of the 
Owl Patrol, he served on the staff of many other Woodbadge courses and 
in 1994 he was asked to serve as Scoutmaster of Woodbadge Course C 11 
L-94. He also served on the Executive Board of the Santa Fe Trail 
Council beginning in 1972. On January 20, 1980 the Diocese of Dodge 
City presented him with the St. George Award. On March 7, 1981 the 
Council presented him with the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award a 
Boy Scouts of America Council can give a volunteer scouter. 
Father Jim loved to travel. He has vacationed in all 50 states and the 
District of Columbia, his favorite being the coast of Oregon and the 
coast of Maine and the state of Alaska. He traveled to Europe twice, 
concentrating the first time on Austria and second on Italy (Rome). He 
was in Canada many times, living there for two years (1984-1986). He 
spent many most enjoyable times at Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch, 
Walsenburg, Colorado and went every summer for a week or more to 
Southwest Colorado in the Durango area. He also enjoyed many cruises to
 Mexico, Alaska, through the Panama Canal, the Mexican Riviera and 
Hawaii. In retirement Father Jim enjoyed his work at Garnand Funeral 
Home in Garden City as a driver and evening attendant. 
He is survived by 2 Sisters-In-Law- Barbara Baker of Fredericksburg, VA
 and Patricia Baker of Edinboro, PA, 5 Nephews- Robert, Michael, James, 
Mark &amp; Joseph, 2 Nieces- Kathleen and Dr. Christina Marie, and 6 
Grand Nieces and 5 Grand Nephews. He was preceded in death by his 
Parents and 2 Brothers- Robert Baker and Dr. Ronald Baker. 
Vigil Service will be at 7:00 PM Thursday and Funeral Mass will be at 
10:30 AM Friday both at St Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City. 
Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call
 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 P M Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden

As October draws to an end, so does family history month.

But Susan Schlichting, Cottonwood Extension District agent, said as the holidays approach, now is a perfect time to consider learning and recording those histories as families gather together.

"Now is the time to kind of be thinking about how you lay that groundwork for getting together and making purposeful conversations around family history as you gather with grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins and to learn more about that history of your family," she said.

And with cellphones, she said documenting those histories is easier than ever.

"Hopefully people take time to write down the stories or record the stories," Schlichting said. "We all carry phones with us. They all have recording devices in them. You could record those stories and share them on digitally if writing it down is not your thing."

And while it may not seem a pressing issue, she said as time passes, treasured family memories and stories can be lost forever if care is not taken to document them.

"Get it documented, because those stories get lost over time if you don't," Schlichting said. "It happens so often in families and, and no one seems to have the interest in taking it on and running with it after they're gone. And so it does just go away."

While she said studying family history can help bring families closer together, evidence shows tangible benefits for youth.

"There's a group out of Emory University that's been doing a bunch of research about family stories and how important they are to teen development and helping kids to learn," she said. "Not only just the good stories about your family, but the challenges your family faced in the past, or maybe how they went through some up and down times and how they came through those in a good way.

"It helps the teens to become more resilient themselves because they've heard the stories of their great grandparents and the struggles they had along the way. ... If you can help instill those kinds of things in kids, they can learn that they have that strength in them as well."

Schlichting said from her past, she has seen first-hand how powerful learning family histories can be.

"I think about that as I grew up, just down the road from the family farm where we started in this country and always heard those stories about how great-great-grandma came over here with two small children by herself because she had no place to be over in the old country," she said. "Her husband had died and they were living in a house owned by a collective farm. And so he passed away and she and the kids were out on the out on the road.

"So they had to find someplace to be and they came to this country and started and formed a farm and went forward from there and in a good way, you know, so our family still has that farm in the family to this day. And (with) those kinds of stories, if you can help instill those kinds of things in kids, they can learn that they have that strength in them as well."

Along with various internet resources to document family histories available, Schlichting said 4-H could also be an asset.

"There are several 4-H project books that are out there that help kids to learn that process of telling the stories, documenting the stories and researching their family history," she said. "And they can get those through your local extension office."

J. Russell Jennings, 66, died on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at his home
 in Lakin. He was born on May 23, 1955 at Buffalo, New York the son of 
James P. &amp; Jeanne (Beiber) Jennings. He married Judy Besecker on 
May 25, 1980 in McPherson, Kansas. 
Russ graduated from Tonawanda, New York High School and the Spartan 
School of Aeronautics at Tulsa, Oklahoma. He went to work at the 
Stanton County airport in Johnson as a mechanic and pilot. In 1977 he 
was a Graduate of General Law Enforcement Officer Training &amp; Police 
Management from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson
 and became a Deputy Sheriff and later Undersheriff for the Kearny 
County Sheriff Department in Lakin. 
In 1981 he attended the University of Nevada at Reno National Judicial 
College and was a Graduate in Limited Jurisdiction General, Alcohol 
Drugs and the Courts, Contracts and Damages. He became the District 
Magistrate Judge for the State of Kansas-Judicial Branch for Kearny 
County District Court. He took classes at Garden City Community College
 and then graduated from Friends University in Wichita with his Bachelor
 of Science Undergraduate Degree with highest honors in Human Resource 
Management. At this time he became the Director for the Southwest 
Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Garden City. 
In 2011 he accepted the position of Commissioner of Juvenile Justice for
 the Kansas Juvenile Justice Authority under Governors Kathleen Sebelius
 and Mark Parkinson. In the election of 2012, he was elected as State 
Representative of the 122nd District and currently was serving his 5th 
term. Russ was well known for his work on corrections and juvenile 
justice issues and has been the Chair of the House Corrections Committee
 for the last 3 sessions. During this time, he also has been a Contract
 Consultant for Performance-based Standards of Braintree, Massachusetts. 
Russ was involved in local and state boards and committees starting in 
1979 as a Member of the Board of Governors of the Kansas Peace Officers 
Association. He served 3 years as an Appointee of the Kansas 
Corrections Ombudsman Board, 13 years as Legislative Committee Chairman,
 Education Committee Chairman and later Vice-President and President of 
the Kansas District Magistrate Judges Association. For 11 years he was a
 Criminal Justice Advisory Board Member at Garden City Community College
 and 2 years as Juvenile Justice Committee Chairman and member of the 
Kansas Corrections Association. In 1996 he was appointed by Chief 
Justice Kay McFarland as a member of the Juvenile Intake and Assessment 
Advisory Committee for the Kansas Supreme Court. 
He served 8 years on the Lakin City Council from 1997 to 2005. In 1997 
Governor Bill Graves appointed him as a Board Member of both the Kansas 
Advisory 
Group on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency and the Kansas Youth Authority Board. 
Russ became very involved with Leadership Kansas through the Kansas 
Chamber of Commerce and Industry and was a 1998 Graduate of the program.
 From 2002 to 2009, he served as State Program Director, Board of 
Trustees member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. 
He also served the State of Kansas as a board member of the Kansas Sex 
Offender Policy Board, Kansas Substance Abuse Policy Board and Kansas 
Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. He served as a board member of 
the Criminal Justice Advisory Board at Washburn University. 
Russ was the 2009 Distinguished Service to Kansas Children Award honoree
 of the Kansas Children’s Service League, the 2009 Outstanding 
Administrator Award honoree of the Council of Juvenile Corrections 
Administrators. In 2010 he was named Kansas Alumnus of the Year for 
Leadership Kansas. 
When he wasn’t working, he spent time at his beloved lake house at 
Kanopolis Lake fishing and spending quality time with his family. Russ 
also enjoyed spending countless hours tending to his lawn to ensure it 
was in pristine condition. 
He is survived by his Wife- Judy Jennings, 2 Sons- Joseph Jennings of 
Topeka, James Jennings of Lakin, 2 Daughters- Julie Jennings of Kansas 
City, Missouri and Jodie (Jennings) Werth and husband Leighton Werth of 
Hays, 2 Brothers- James P. Jennings II of Bellevue, Washington and Carl 
E. Jennings of Buffalo, New York and 2 Grandsons- Carter Werth and Wyatt
 Werth both of Hays. 
Funeral Service will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, November 6 at United 
Methodist Church in Lakin with Rev Rita Stockton officiating. The 
service will be livestreamed on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. 
 Following the service there will be a reception and lunch at the 4-H 
Building at the Kearny County Fairgrounds. A private burial will be in

DENVER (AP) — Justin Simmons and Denver's defense held firm after a fumble gave Washington the ball back, and the Broncos blocked two field goals on their way to a 17-10 win Sunday that stopped a four-game slide.

Melvin Gordon III caught a touchdown pass and ran for the go-ahead score from 7 yards out with 4:31 remaining. He also fumbled with 21 seconds to go, giving Washington the ball at the Denver 24-yard line.

The defense forced Taylor Heinicke to throw the ball out of the back of the end zone on the last play of the game.

It looked as if the game was over when Simmons picked off a desperation Heinicke pass in the end zone with 37 seconds left. It was Simmons' second interception of the game.

But Gordon's fumble gave Washington one more chance.

The last defensive stand prevented the first winless October for the Broncos (4-4) since 1967.

Dre’Mont Jones and Shelby Harris each blocked a field-goal attempt from Chris Blewitt. Jones got his hand on a 47-yard try in the fourth, and Harris batted down a 45-yarder from Blewitt in the second.

For large chunks of time, it was almost a game of who didn’t want to win — with plenty of missed opportunities, field goals and mistakes. Washington (2-6) failed to convert on a fourth down early in the game, had Bobby McCain drop an interception in his hands and allowed five sacks to a defense missing Von Miller.

Brandon McManus missed a 53-yard field goal for Denver with 10:57 remaining. He was 13 of 13 before pushing his attempt just right.

Gordon energized a sparse crowd on a 15-yard TD catch from Teddy Bridgewater just before halftime. There were an announced 11,755 no-shows on a cool day in the Mile High City. That despite tickets being available for as low as $25.

Washington tied it at 10 late in the third on Heinicke's 20-yard touchdown throw to DeAndre Carter. It was Washington's fourth straight loss.

The biggest cheer of the afternoon was for Hall of Fame QB Peyton Manning, who was inducted into the team’s Ring of Fame at halftime. Manning even removed his orange jacket and put on his No. 18 jersey one last time. He lofted a perfect 30-yard-ish strike to receiver Brandon Stokley in the end zone.

Miller was sidelined by an ankle injury. The team’s career sacks leader walked the sideline in a jacket.

Bridgewater was helped by the return of receiver Jerry Jeudy (ankle) and tight end Albert Okwuegbunam (hamstring). Jeudy had four catches for 39 yards, including a big grab on the go-ahead drive.

Manning had his Ring of Fame pillar unveiled in a pregame ceremony in front of fans outside the stadium. At halftime, there was a ceremony to honor his inclusion into the team’s Ring of Fame.

He signed off on the authenticity of his new bronze bust — right down to the detail of his forehead.

“The forehead is always the key thing. You want to you want it to be accurate, right?” cracked Manning. “So there’s a lot of space there.”

Manning said he hasn't had any serious conversations with anyone about becoming part of an ownership/management group to make a potential bid&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-nfl-business-denver-broncos-a8ae60145acdd49f8c3f1a2a9f64e272" target="_blank">on the Broncos</a>.

“I keep looking for that $3 billion in my pocket. I can’t find it," Manning quipped. "I think it’s in a hidden account somewhere. That’s not really on my radar.”

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — A first-year Kansas lawmaker, who was reprimanded by his colleagues for abusive conduct before taking office, has been arrested on suspicion of domestic battery. 

Democratic state Rep. Aaron Coleman of Kansas City was arrested Saturday evening and Johnson County Jail records show he remains in custody Sunday afternoon.

The 21-year-old's arrest comes eight months after he received a written warning from a legislative committee about conduct before taking office that included abusive behavior toward young woman and girls.

 House Democratic leader Tom Sawyer says Coleman's constituents and the State of Kansas would be better served if he were to resign and get the help he badly needs.

Kansas lawmaker arrested on domestic violence charge

Carl Henry Hoelscher, 95, of Bushton, Kansas, passed away October 29, 2021 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. 

He was born July 21, 1926, in rural Chase, Kansas, the son of Homer David and Lydia Anna Mehl Hoelscher. Carl graduated from Bushton Rural High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He has farmed in the Bushton area since 1951. Carl was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, rural Bushton and Gideons International. 

Carl enjoyed reading and spending time with his family. On November 12, 1950, Carl was united in marriage with Velma L. Cruth in Bushton. She preceded him in death on July 26, 1981. On November 23, 1985, Carl was united in marriage with Helene Clark Appel in Bushton. She preceded him in death on August 10, 1998. 

On August 14, 1999, Carl was united in marriage with Lois Doughty Biehler Behnke in Bushton. She preceded him in death on July 29, 2010. Carl is also preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Patricia Carlene “Patti” Hoelscher Rolfs; two brothers, Verl and Alvin Hoelscher; and two brothers-in-law, William “Bill” Frees and Jim Fredrickson. 

Carl is survived by daughter, Margie John and husband Robert of Bushton, and children, Jessica Sullivan and husband Jesse of Colorado Springs, CO, Matthew John and wife Emily of Lexington, KY, and their children, Betsy and Lena, and Jenni Stringham and husband Liam of Hays, KS and their son, Jonathan; son-in-law, Scott Rolfs and wife Toni of Bushton, and children, Justin Rolfs and wife Stephanie of Colorado Springs, CO, and Monte Rolfs and wife Melissa of Lorraine, KS, and their children, Cassidy and Caroline; son, Don Hoelscher and wife Joy of Bushton, and children, Micah Hoelscher and wife Becca of Newton, KS, and their children, Eli, Chloe, Blake and Jase; Andrew Hoelscher and wife Courtney of Newton, KS, and their children, Addi, Hannah, Kate, Mia, and twin girls expected in the new year, Laura Neff and husband Judah of McPherson, KS and their children, Isaac and Amelia; two sisters, Roberta Frees of Lyons and Annabel Fredrickson of Topeka, KS; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Hoelscher of Derby, KS; seven step-children; twenty step-grandchildren; and thirty- four step-great-grandchildren. 

Visitation will be from 12:00 until 4:00 P.M., Thursday, November 4, 2021, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons and 6:00 until 8:00 P.M., at Salem United Methodist Church with family present. Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M., Friday, November 5, 2021, at Salem United Methodist Church, rural Bushton, with Pastor Tom Reazin officiating. Burial will follow at the Salem United Methodist Cemetery with military honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard.

Carl Henry Hoelscher

Stephen Edward Hart, 75, died October 30, 2021, at Clara Barton 
Hospital, Hoisington.&nbsp; He was born November 28, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, 
the son of James Michael and Cecilia (Sack) Hart.&nbsp; Stephen graduated 
from St. Joseph Acadamy of Hays, and then went on to earn his bachelors 
and masters degree from Wichita State University.

Stephen was in education for 30 years. He taught K-5th 
grade and was a school adminstrator and principle for the Diocese of 
Wichita. He then went on to teach in Marion, Kansas, where he taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th
 grades.&nbsp; Later he worked for the American Milk Production Inc. of 
Hillsboro and was an office manager for Pratt Well, Pratt, Kansas.

He was a member of St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Russell,
 Kansas, and the Knights of Columbus Council. Stephen put many happy 
miles on his treasured Harley trike often riding in Toy Runs and with 
clubs.&nbsp; He was a gun enthusiast and enjoyed target shooting, loved doing
 yard work and was very particular with it’s care, and loved to draw. He
 was also considered the Clark Griswald of christmas lights. Stephen’s 
famous quote was “The one that eats the fastest gets the mostest!” This 
was true in his love of fried chicken.

He is survived by his wife of sixteen years, Mary Hart of the home; 
daughter, Lisa Sewell and husband Eric of Trinity, Florida; son, John 
Hart of Houston, Texas; stepchildren, Cody Roach of Russell, Brandon 
Roach of Great Bend, Shiloh Roach and wife Krystal of Russell, Chelsie 
Link and husband Shane of Great Bend; sister, Barbara Janzing of Bel 
Aire; brother, Joe Hart and wife Kathy of Amarrillo, Texas, Delia Hart 
of Ocarver, Washington; sisters-in-law, Shawna Shadduck and husband 
Kelly of Beaver, Michelle Root and husband Steve of Great Bend; 
brothers-in-law, Everett Hoeffner and wife Davina of Dallas, Texas and 
Dennis Krawetzke of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Trevor Hart,
 Kyle &amp; Justin Sewell; and nine step grandchildren, Cheyenne Roach, 
Annabelle and Alyssa Roach, Aiden, Andy and Reagan Roach, Rylee Rupp, 
Koby and Jamison Link; and his beloved dogs, Hunter, Teddy, and Harley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, James Hart, sister,
 MaryAnn Huslig and husband Erving, and parents-in-law, Sonny Hoeffner 
and wife Juanita, brother-in-law, Bernard Janzing and sister-in-law, 
Carolyn Krawetzke.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday. Family will greet 
friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with Knights of Columbus Rosary to begin 
at 7 p.m., at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.&nbsp; Mass of Christian Burial 
will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at St. John the Evangelist

James “Jim” C. Knapp, age 80, of&nbsp;WaKeeney, 
Kansas passed away Friday, October 29, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, 
Hays, KS. He was born July 15, 1941, in Bird City, Kansas to Charles and
 Mildred (Phipps) Knapp. On January 6, 1968, he married Patricia (Patti)
 Ann&nbsp;Whisler.

Jim worked as an actuarial accountant for 
Blue Cross &amp; Blue Shield of Kansas in Topeka, KS. He enjoyed 
collecting&nbsp;die-cast&nbsp;John Deere tractors, doing puzzles and playing 
solitaire, watching John Wayne and Hallmark movies, and watching his 
special&nbsp;WaKeeney&nbsp;“granddaughters” Libby and Adele in their sports and 
other school events.&nbsp;

He&nbsp;is survived&nbsp;by two daughters, Jamie 
(Brian)&nbsp;Slawson&nbsp;and Heidi (Jeff) McDaniel of Topeka; two brothers, Tim 
(Janice) Knapp of Atwood, KS; and Tom Knapp of Olathe, KS; a sister Gay 
(Merle) Kruse of Sheridan, WY; two sisters-in-law Glenda Knapp of Hays, 
KS and Joyce Ross of Lincoln, NE; a brother-in-law Larry&nbsp;Manz&nbsp;and many 
nieces and nephews.

Edna “Eddie” Lucille Delaney, 88, passed away on October 27, 2021, in 
Plainville, KS. She was born on November 23, 1932, in Hill City, KS to 
W. Troy and Maggie (Rippen) Walker. 
 She had 7 brothers, Everett, Lawrence, Raymond, Wilber, Irvin, Jack,
 Bob, and 1 sister, Maxine Watson, who proceeded her in death; and 1 
brother, Lee Walker of Phillipsburg, KS, surviving. 
 Eddie married Robert Edmisson in 1951 and they had 3 children: 
Raymond Edmisson of Lowell, AR, Jeanne McMullen of Wichita, KS, and 
Paula Wilkerson of Maricopa, AZ. She was very proud to be a grandmother 
to 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Robert proceeded her in 
death in 1974. She then married Kenneth Delaney in 1984 and he preceded 
her in death in 1997.
 Eddie was a graduate of Alton High School. She had many adventures 
in life with the greatest becoming a nurse at 62 years old at which she 
worked at well into her 80s. She was a member of the VFW where she had 
served as an 8th and 9th District President. She also had belonged to 
the Rebekah’s and the American Legion. She was a 4-H leader along with 
many other activities.
 A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at 10:30 
AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. There will be no 
public visitation.

Edna 'Eddie' Lucille Delaney

Darla Lee Cadoret, 87 of Manhattan, KS passed away on October 22, 2021,&nbsp; at the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in Manhattan. 
Darla was born December 6, 1933, in Stockton, KS. Darla graduated from 
Stockton High School on May 16, 1952. She married the love of her life, 
Joseph Cadoret, on November 18, 1951, in Stockton. Darla and Joe’s love 
was nothing short of inspiring. 
She is survived by her daughters Kim (Doug) French of Stockton and 
Pamela Herl of North Platte, NE; grandchildren: Guy, Heather (Cameron), 
Amanda French; Courtney (Brian) Carpenter, Charlee Simpson (Aaron), and 
Stephanie Miner (Josh); as well as 17 great-grandchildren; sister Connie
 (Duane) Forbes, brothers: Dale and David Baxter and sister-in-law 
Bonnie Baxter. 
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, parents Charles and 
Flossie Baxter, her brother Don Baxter, sister-in-law Carolyn Baxter, 
and great-granddaughter Graycee Carpenter. 
Darla’s career as a licensed child care provider spanned decades and she
 loved each child as her own. The connections she made with the families
 had a lasting impression as she still received cards and updates to 
this day. She was lifelong in her faith and enjoyed her daily devotions.
 Darla and Joe traveled to Arizona many winters and you could find them 
playing Mexican train, shopping, and visiting with her family and 
friends. Darla enjoyed cooking, and her family would always request her 
famous peanut pie and Special K bars at every reunion and family holiday
 gathering. 
An inurnment will take place in Stockton Cemetery at a later date. 
Memorials can be made to Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in 
Manhattan or the Stockton Public Library. Contributions may be sent in

 </figure>Darla Lee Cadoret, 87 of Manhattan, KS passed away on October 22, 2021,&nbsp; at the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in Manhattan. 
Darla was born December 6, 1933, in Stockton, KS. Darla graduated from 
Stockton High School on May 16, 1952. She married the love of her life, 
Joseph Cadoret, on November 18, 1951, in Stockton. Darla and Joe’s love 
was nothing short of inspiring. 
She is survived by her daughters Kim (Doug) French of Stockton and 
Pamela Herl of North Platte, NE; grandchildren: Guy, Heather (Cameron), 
Amanda French; Courtney (Brian) Carpenter, Charlee Simpson (Aaron), and 
Stephanie Miner (Josh); as well as 17 great-grandchildren; sister Connie
 (Duane) Forbes, brothers: Dale and David Baxter and sister-in-law 
Bonnie Baxter. 
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, parents Charles and 
Flossie Baxter, her brother Don Baxter, sister-in-law Carolyn Baxter, 
and great-granddaughter Graycee Carpenter.

Darla Lee Cadoret (1933-2021)

Gerald “Gerry” O. Watts, 83, passed away peacefully at his home on October 29, 2021.  Gerry once said that upon his death, “The Good Lord finally got brave enough to take me home!” 

Gerald was born August 21, 1938, in Portis to Orville Richard and Edna Mae (Maier) Watts.  He went to Portis schools from 1944-46. At that time the family moved to Harlan where he continued his education until 1954.  The Watts family returned to Portis and Gerry graduated from Portis High School in 1956.  He attended Fort Hays State College from 1956-58.  In 1958, he went to work as a bookkeeper for a Hays furniture/appliance store.  Gerry and Marlene Bender were united in marriage in June, 1959. In the summer of 1962, Gerry, his wife, and daughter, Debbie moved to Colorado Springs where he got a job with a building company.  They were blessed with two additional children, Don and Terry. He continued working in the building industry as an employee and eventually an owner.  In 2003 Gerry and Marlene moved to Downs, Kansas where he opened Timeless Treasures LLC on Morgan avenue, downtown Downs. He remained active in the Downs United Methodist Church, Downs Chamber of Commerce (treasurer), and the community.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald Gene Watts in October 2019; and his brother Jackie “Jack” Joe Watts in March 2021.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marlene, of the home; brother, Mike “Mick” Watts; daughter, Deborah Kahler (Page); son, Terence Watts (Christine); Grandchildren Shelley Kahler Meaux (Steve), Devin Watts (Raquel Vasquez), Kirsten Kahler (Thomas Ragsdale), Angela Watts, and Garrett Watts; one great grandchild, Lucien Albert Meaux and three step grandchildren, Anastasia, Joseph, and Angelina Berglund.

Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday, November 4, 2021, at the Downs United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m.  No visitation.

Gerald 'Gerry' O. Watts

Stanley R. Haynes, 90, passed away October 29, 2021, at Country Living of Larned.

He was born February 2, 1931, in Amarillo, Texas, the son of Frank and Helen Blanton Haynes.

A longtime area resident, he was an electrical contractor and the 
founder of Haynes Electric, Larned where he was currently serving on the
 Board of Directors. He was a member of the Frist Presbyterian Church, 
Building and Trade Board, and the Country Club, all of Larned.

On September 5, 1948, he married Norma J. Snavely at St. Paul Minnesota; she preceded him in death on December 6, 2013.

Survivors include: four sons, Kenneth S. (Patricia) Haynes, Media, 
PA, Bradley R. (Jeanine) Haynes, West Field, IN, Keith R. Haynes, and 
Jim S. (Suzan) Haynes, both of Larned; daughter, Cynthia A. Claussen, 
Springdale, AR; twelve grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren, 
and three great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Gene 
Haynes; a sister, Phyllis Bethel; and son-in-law Ron Claussen.

Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 8th, 
at the First Presbyterian Church, Larned with Pastor Bill Stapleton 
presiding.&nbsp; Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Beckwith
 Mortuary, Larned.
