Alan Oliver Goodrow, born September 22, 1985, gained his angel
wings on August 30, 2025. He was born in Ness City, Kansas, the youngest of
four children with older sisters.

He attended Ness City Elementary and Ness City High School,
graduating from Great Bend High School then with his certificate in welding
fabrication from Hutchinson Community College. Alan was clever and bright. He
enjoyed welding, one of his true passions in life. Later, he took over the
family business, installing metal roofs, bought and flipped vehicles, and
worked with his sister at their handyman business. Alan was a jack of all
trades, with very few things that he was unable to figure out. Between Google,
YouTube, and general know-how, he could get any job done. 

Alan enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his
brothers-in-law. They referred to themselves as HOGS (Husbands of Goodrow’s),
and he was given the honorary title. Alan was a very witty man, always quick
with a joke, or perhaps a bit of questionable humor. Many hands of the family
tradition of pinochle were played by Alan and any given partner. He was quick
to boast about winning and quicker to dispute a loss. Foosball was a pastime
among the family, and Alan could zing a ball far too fast to defend. He was an
avid Chiefs fan.

He was a light in everyone’s lives, and he would cheer you up
or simply listen to you vent. Alan didn’t hesitate to help family whenever he
was needed. He had a heart of service, showing his care for his family and
friends time and time again, highlighted by his soft spot for his sister,
Danielle. Alan may not have always shown his softer side, but there was no
question about his love and dedication to his family. He was greatly loved by
his family, and his parents were very proud of him. Alan will be very missed.

Survivors include his parents, Dan and Darla (Brandyberry)
Goodrow of Ellinwood; his sisters, Crystal Hutchinson and husband Brian of
Hays, and Mandy Norris and Josh of Ellinwood; brother-in-law, Mickey Hoskins
and wife Whitney of Ellinwood; nieces, Aracely Hutchinson, Grace Hoskins, and
Clementyne Norris; great niece, Sage Hutchinson; nephews, Elijah Hutchinson,
Mac Hoskins, Dallon Luker, Shae Hoskins, Zarron Luker, Owen Norris, and Nixxon
Luker; grandmothers, Rachel Goodrow of Penokee and Phyllis Brandyberry of Hill
City; and large extended family and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Danielle Dee Hoskins;
and grandfathers, Norman Brandyberry and Carl Goodrow.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at
10:00 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2025, at First Christian Church, Great Bend,
with Reverend Joshua Leu presiding. Memorials have been designated to the Alan
Goodrow Memorial Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Rd., Great
Bend, KS 67530.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) will host five public meetings this fall, including one in Hays, to share information on proposed state park fee changes and hear directly from Kansans. These town hall-style meetings will provide the public with an opportunity to learn about the proposed changes, ask questions, and provide feedback. 

Fees remain unchanged at this time; any adjustments will require a vote of approval by the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission before they are implemented.

“Utility and operational costs for our state parks have risen nearly 45 percent since 2016,” said Conner O’Flannagan, KDWP state parks director. “These proposed changes are necessary to ensure our parks remain safe, well-maintained, and accessible to all Kansans, both now and for future generations.”

Patsy Jean Eikenberry, of Leoti, Kansas, passed
away at the Wichita County Hospital, surrounded by her family, on August 28,
2025, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease, at the age of 78.

She was born on
December 15, 1946, in Wellington, Kansas, to Marvin and Jean (Cheney)
Palmblade. The family moved to Leoti, where she attended school, graduating
from Wichita County High School in 1964. She then attended Brown Mackie College
in Salina, where she trained to become a legal secretary. Patsy worked in that
capacity for many years, taking brief periods away to stay home with her young
family, and working with her mother at the 'flower shop', until retirement.

She married Kenneth G. 'Jerry' Eikenberry on September 4, 1965. She passed one week prior to
their 60th Anniversary.

Patsy was an avid
reader, with a large stack of books kept next to her rocking chair, and regular
trips to the library to exchange for new material. She had a huge heart for
helping others. On her daily walks, she would check on elderly friends to make
sure they were well and to assist if they were in need. Those who knew Patsy
and her family may have recognized the inherited trait of being mildly
stubborn, although that condition did not normally affect the observer in a
negative manner. Patsy loved her many pets, most recently seen walking
regularly with their two black miniature poodles around the town multiple times
a day. Patsy was very generous, and she showed her love for her family by
(over) preparing many different dishes for family gatherings, whether it was a
holiday, a trip to the lake, or a random weekend. Her sometimes brutal honesty
and “one-liners” were appreciated by all, including her caregivers, when it was
her turn to receive assistance from others.

Patsy is survived by
her husband Jerry, Leoti, and sons Colton (Julie) Eikenberry, Hays, and Trenton
(Michelle) Eikenberry, Garden City; Six grandchildren: Lizzy (Jonathan) Cuccia,
Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Molly Eikenberry, Tampa, Florida; Hannah Eikenberry,
Hays; Devin Eikenberry, Garden City; Emily Eikenberry (fiancé Maverick
Skipper), Garden City; and Chance Eikenberry, Minden, Nebraska; three
great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Connie Palmblade; a brother-in-law, Don
(Trudy) Eikenberry; and six nieces and nephews.

Patsy is preceded in
death by her parents, an infant son, Kipp Eikenberry, and a brother, Fred
Palmblade.

A graveside memorial
service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., October 4, 2025, at the Leoti Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers,
memorials are encouraged to the Wichita County Long Term Care

🎧 Eagle Radio, Hull sports broadcast schedule

The City of Hays is preparing to welcome an estimated 180 disc golfers from across the country for the 41st Annual Frontier Open, taking place on Sept. 6-7.

This long-standing event, one of the oldest in Kansas, will take place at the historic Flying Bison Disc Golf Course at Frontier Park.

The event is hosted by members of the Flyin' Bison Disc Golf Club, and has become an annual tradition for both players and the Hays community.

The tournament's history is linked to the course itself, which holds a unique place in the sport’s development.

The Flying Bison course was established in the late 1970s and is recognized by the Professional Disc Golf Association as the fourth disc golf course built in Kansas and among the first 113 in the United States.

Today, it stands as the last original grassroots course remaining in the state.

"We are incredibly proud of the Flying Bison Disc Golf Course," said Jeff Boyle, director of parks for the City of Hays. "This course is more than just a place to play; it's a piece of our city's and the sport's history.

"It was built by a community of passionate local disc golfers, and their legacy continues to this day. We’ve worked hard to maintain the course's integrity while making improvements to ensure it remains a premier destination for players. The terrain, with its natural hazards from Big Creek and challenging wooded areas, truly tests the skill of even the most experienced players. We're excited to showcase it to a new generation of competitors."

The 41st Annual Frontier Open will feature the East/West/Monster East/Monster West layouts, designed to accommodate the large field of players without requiring cuts on the final day.

The course, which spans 75 acres of parkland, offers a challenging test of skill, including elevation changes and the notoriously strong Kansas wind.

Melissa Dixon, director of the Hays Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau, highlighted the broader economic and community impact of the tournament.

"The Frontier Open is a major driver of sports tourism for Hays," Dixon said. "With 180 players, and many more family and friends traveling with them, this event brings a significant influx of visitors to our city. They stay in our hotels, eat at our restaurants, and shop at our local businesses.

This annual tournament reinforces our reputation as a vibrant community that actively supports athletic events. The longevity of the Frontier Open speaks volumes about the dedication of the Flyin' Bison Disc Golf Club and the welcoming spirit of our residents. We are thrilled to host an event that contributes so positively to our local economy and showcases the unique appeal of Hays."

In addition to the main tournament, the event includes early-bird offerings and other mini-competitions throughout the weekend, providing a full schedule of activities for participants and spectators.

Due to the high volume of participants, the City of Hays has worked with the Flyin' Bison Disc Golf Club to establish an additional parking lot on the north side of Frontier Park to help manage traffic and ensure a smooth experience for all.

Fort Hays State University Online Open House set for Sept. 16

Hays Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau

The Hays Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau will partner with the Hays Recreation Commission to host the free Hays Prairie Winds Kite Show for the community on Saturday, Sept. 6 and Sunday, Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex, 1376 U.S. Hwy. 183 Bypass.

This family-friendly event will feature the giant kite displays of Great American Kites &amp; Events, a vendor based out of Missouri that puts on kite shows all over the country.

“We are excited to extend this special event to two days so that even more people can enjoy the show that Great American Kites &amp; Events puts on,” said Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Melissa Dixon.

“We thank Hays Rec and their staff for their generous partnership to make the event bigger and better.” Dixon said. “A two-day event gives us a better chance of the right weather – sustained winds – for the best show possible.”

Several food trucks are scheduled to be at the event including Snow Cone Express, Taco Riendo, The Local Food Truck, Chilly Charlie’s, Triple C Lemonade Stand, Chucherias Mexicanas Snacks, and Suck It Up Bubble Cup. These vendors will set up in the sports complex parking lot.

Other planned activities include the Hays Public Library Bookmobile, the Fort Hays State University MakerVan, live animal visits from the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, and yard games sponsored by Big Brothers Big Sisters Serving Ellis County.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and coolers into the sports complex, but glass bottles are not allowed. Pets on leashes are allowed at the complex, but owners must clean up after their pets.

The Fort Hays State University Collegiate Model United Nations student group is pleased to announce the upcoming Heartland Model UN High School event, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 17, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the FHSU campus.

This full-day conference invites high school students from across the region to take on the role of world leaders, debate global challenges, and collaborate on solutions in a professional and strategic environment.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in several committees that explore pressing international issues, such as reducing space threats, the universal realization of the right of peoples to self-determination, and nuclear security.

The event is open to all high schools, regardless of size or Model UN experience. Students will gain valuable skills in strategic diplomacy, public speaking, research, and teamwork while connecting with peers who share an interest in global affairs.

Heartland Model UN headed to FHSU

The Rush County Sheriff's Office is rolling out a wave of new programs to keep residents safe and supported.

Rush County Sheriff Mark Knowles said a Bicycle Back-to-School Block Party is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 16 in the 200 block of West Seventh Street in La Crosse, and 84 bikes will be given away.

"One of the best things I wanted to do is start getting the children more involved, but I also wanted to start pushing safety," Knowles said.

Knowles said the event is open to families from surrounding counties to pick up a refurbished bike, thanks to Norton and Ellsworth correctional facilities. Models will range from those with training wheels to full-size adult bicycles.

Helmets will be available in limited supply. Knowles said bicycle education is a key part of the giveaway and will remain a focus throughout the event.

"The last thing I want is 100 kids out here riding bikes and not knowing about bicycle safety," he said.

Knowles said each donated bike will be registered through a bicycle permit program to help ensure lost or stolen bicycles can be returned to their owners.

The event will also feature a DJ, free food with grilling by the La Crosse Fire Department, snow cones from the Family Crisis Center in Great Bend, sidewalk chalk, bubbles and 20 booth spaces for businesses to showcase their work.

The Rush County Sheriff's office has recently initiated several other new projects.

Through a new partnership with the <a href="https://www.familycrisiskansas.com/">Family Crisis Center</a>, the county is offering free items, including diapers, clothing, hygiene products and food to those in need. The program requires a one-time referral from law enforcement.

"My attitude about this is every single resource we offer, even if it helps one person or saves one person's life, then it was worth everything," he said.

The sheriff's office has been working with the crisis center for years, mostly with domestic violence and sexual assault victims.

Knowles said the county has limited resources, and those wishing to donate can contact <a href="https://rushcountykansas.org/rush-county-sheriff/">the sheriff's office, 715 Elm St.</a>, to contribute to Sara's Blessings or choose from other programs to support.

The What3Words app helps first responders pinpoint a person’s location using a unique set of words, a tool especially useful when callers are in rural areas.

"Every three-meter-by-three-meter square in the world has been assigned a unique three-word address," he said. "If they're in the middle of a field or down in a ravine, for example, we're going to be able to know exactly where they are by them giving us those three words."

Knowles said the Rush County Sheriff’s Office is the county’s only full-time law enforcement and first responder agency in Rush County. They work alongside volunteer EMS and the fire department. The app is integrated into their 911 and law enforcement systems.

Knowles said families can also use the app. For example, a child stranded without gas could share their three words with a parent.

The sheriff’s office has partnered with the Southwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging to provide Operation Red File, a program designed to save the lives of residents.

Although the free program is aimed at seniors, Knowles said it is open to anyone and is designed to keep an individual’s medical and emergency information readily accessible in case of an emergency.

Knowles said more than 200 have already been distributed in the county and can assist individuals who are unable to communicate directly with first responders or medical personnel.

Residents are provided with a red folder containing their medical history, a list of medications, emergency contacts, insurance details and optional documents, such as wills or powers of attorney.

Knowles said that first responders are trained to check for the red folder during emergencies, which can be taken with the patient in an ambulance to help EMS and doctors. Folders are available at the Rush County Sheriff’s Office.

The county is also providing seat belt covers for individuals with special or medical needs. The covers store personal information on the inside to protect privacy while ensuring first responders have access to critical details in an emergency.

"If we had a vehicle accident, for example, and the parent is unfortunately unconscious with children in there. Say that they were autistic. It would be a quick way to look at what we are dealing with and make sure that their needs are taken care of," he said.

Knowles said the idea came from a parent who suggested it to the sheriff’s office. He added that the inside pocket can be easily updated if medical providers, emergency contacts or other vital details change.

The covers are available free of charge at the sheriff’s office, with no medical documentation required.

"If they're in the middle of a field or down in a ravine, for example, we're going to be able to know exactly where they are by them giving us those three words."Knowles said the Rush County Sheriff’s Office is the county’s only full-time law enforcement and first responder agency in Rush County. They work alongside volunteer EMS and the fire department. The app is integrated into their 911 and law enforcement systems.Knowles said families can also use the app. For example, a child stranded without gas could share their three words with a parent.What3Words is available for free download on <a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/what3words-navigation-maps/id657878530">iOS</a> and <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.what3words.android&amp;hl=en_US">Android</a>&nbsp;devices.<h2>Operation Red File program</h2>The sheriff’s office has partnered with the Southwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging to provide Operation Red File, a program designed to save the lives of residents.Although the free program is aimed at seniors, Knowles said it is open to anyone and is designed to keep an individual’s medical and emergency information readily accessible in case of an emergency.Knowles said more than 200 have already been distributed in the county and can assist individuals who are unable to communicate directly with first responders or medical personnel.Residents are provided with a red folder containing their medical history, a list of medications, emergency contacts, insurance details and optional documents, such as wills or powers of attorney.Knowles said that first responders are trained to check for the red folder during emergencies, which can be taken with the patient in an ambulance to help EMS and doctors. Folders are available at the Rush County Sheriff’s Office.<h2>Seat belt warning covers</h2>The county is also providing seat belt covers for individuals with special or medical needs. The covers store personal information on the inside to protect privacy while ensuring first responders have access to critical details in an emergency."If we had a vehicle accident, for example, and the parent is unfortunately unconscious with children in there. Say that they were autistic. It would be a quick way to look at what we are dealing with and make sure that their needs are taken care of," he said.Knowles said the idea came from a parent who suggested it to the sheriff’s office. The United Way of Ellis County kicked off its annual fundraising campaign with a goal of $350,000.

Jaden Richardson, board president of United Way of Ellis County, said the campaign focuses on youth opportunity, healthy communities, financial security and community resilience.

"Donating to United Way helps kids succeed, it helps adults secure jobs and you help families become healthier," Richardson said.

Marie Froelich, a board member of the Cancer Council of Ellis County, read a testimonial from a client battling stage 4, non-curable colorectal cancer for more than two years and seven months, with the disease having spread to his lungs and liver.

"I took my 50th round of chemo this month," Foelich read from the testimony. "The Cancer Council has been important along the way. With the added expenses of travel, lodging, meds and especially insurance, it makes a very difficult situation even harder. I can't stress enough how impactful it is for a family to be able to focus on life and treatment and not stress over expenses."

The client also shared that his 6-year-old daughter underwent open-heart surgery at just 8 days old, followed by three additional surgeries and a six-month stay in a Kansas City ICU.

Richardson said United Way currently supports 15 partner agencies, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services, High Plains Mental Health Center, The Salvation Army and the Hays Senior Center.

Cancer Council of Ellis County shares story of how United Way helps community at kickoff

Judy (Polifka) Rohr-Flaherty, 86, Hays, died Wednesday, August
27, 2025, in Overland Park, Kansas.

She was born June 10, 1939, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of
Charles A. and Regina (Schmidt) Polifka. &nbsp;On June 3, 2006, she married
John Flaherty in Pfeifer, Kansas.&nbsp; Judy
graduated from Girls Catholic High School.&nbsp;
She attended Fort Hays State University and was a graduate of Colorado
School of Banking in Boulder, Colorado and the ABA National Truth-In-Lending
Compliance School in Norman, Oklahoma.&nbsp;
She was employed by Farmers State Bank of Hays and Commerce Bank,
retiring as Vice President and Trust Officer after 38 years.&nbsp; 

Judy was very active in the Hays area during her career and
paved the way for numerous other women to become involved in the Hays Chamber
of Commerce and Hays business communities. &nbsp;She was the first female Chamber of Commerce
Ambassador, the first female to serve on the Chamber Board of Directors and the
first female to be elected Chair of the Board.&nbsp;
She was also a member and officer of the following organizations:
Secretary of St. Anthony Hospital Board of Directors (before merger with Hadley
Hospital), member of the Steering Committee for the merger of the two Hays
hospitals, Treasurer of Hays Medical Center Board of Directors, President of
Soroptimist International of Hays, Inc. (two separate terms), Treasurer of
Sunflower Girl Scouts Council, &nbsp;Secretary
of Cancer Council of Ellis County, and member of Leadership Hays Board of
Directors.&nbsp; In addition to her full-time
employment at Commerce Bank, Judy served as Director of Music for St. Nicholas
of Myra Catholic Church for 15 years.&nbsp; It
has been said that banking was her career, but music was her life.

Judy’s awards
consisted of the Athena Award which is given to the outstanding business and
professional woman of the year.&nbsp; Her most
coveted award was being the first female to receive the Chamber of Commerce
Hall of Fame award.&nbsp; The Hall of Fame
award is given to an individual in recognition of their longtime service to the
Hays community.&nbsp; 

In her later years, she
enjoyed traveling with John, playing board games with family, and a variety of
card games with her friends at Via Christi. She also cherished visits with her five
grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, their spouses, and her five great
grandchildren. Her&nbsp;final months were spent living closer to family where she was
able to see her kids and their families more frequently.

Survivors include her daughter Jackie Mosher and husband Alan
of Overland Park, her son Jeff Rohr and wife Tracy of Overland Park, her stepdaughter
Shelly Keller and husband Travis of &nbsp;Hays, her stepsons Mike Flaherty and wife
Angie of Derby and John P. Flaherty of Kansas City, grandchildren Michelle
McCormick and husband Justin, Jonathan Mosher and wife Kelly, Madison Klimas
and husband Joel, Mason Rohr and wife Ravyn, and Makenna Rohr, great
grandchildren Charlie and Eli McCormick, Quinn, Sawyer and Rory Klimas, her step
grandchildren Jordan Flaherty, Maddie Keller, Quinton Flaherty, Kaitlyn
Flaherty, Camryn Flaherty, and Karlynn Flaherty, her sister Betty C.
Schmeidler of Hays, her brother Fr. Charles Polifka, OFM Cap. of Wichita, and
numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband John, step grandson
Tanner Starkey-Flaherty, and brother-in-law Kenny Schmeidler.

The Hays USD 489 cut the ribbon on its new $115 million high school during its annual Maroon and Gold scrimmage Friday night.

On hand were school administrators, the Hays High staff, six of the seven school board members, and representatives of Nabholz Construction, the district's construction manager, and DLR, the district's architect.

Hays USD 489 Superintendent Ron Wilson welcomed the community to the new school.

"My goal five years ago when we started this project was to give our students, staff and community everything they deserved—what they deserved was a modern, safe and inspiring 5A school," he said.

He said he believed the goal has been reached.

He noted the new football field has a "Hays" monument on its north side.&nbsp;

"The Hays monument will no doubt be the site of many photo opportunities for special moments and events that will take place within the school for many, many years. However, I believe these four letters represent more than a bunch of concrete poured into molds to spell out the name of our city," Wilson said.

"What those four letters mean is that it's a symbol to recognize how our Hays community made an investment in our kids," he said.

He said generations of students will likely pose for photos at that sign.

"The most important thing that our Hays monument gives us is that it is a reminder of what great things can be achieved when a community comes together for kids. Thank you, Hays community, for investing in our kids," he said.&nbsp;

He thanked the Hays High staff, who were invited on the new turfed football field. They worked many hours to box up the contents of the former high school and prepare the new building for the start of the school year, he said.

He thanked the school board for its support as well as DLR and Nabholz Construction, whose staff left their families for up to two years to build the new Hays High.

He praised Hays High Principal Shawn Henderson for his work on shaping the plans for the school while also running a 1,000-student high school and earning a High School Principal of the Year Award.

Henderson also praised the staff for their hard work preparing the school for students.&nbsp;

"Their professionalism, care, and concern are unmatched," he said, "and they are truly what make the walls of this school come to life. One of our district's core values is to 'sell the opportunities and possibilities' for our students' futures, and they exemplify that every day."

He thanked the school board and the community for valuing students enough to provide them with an innovative space.

To the students he said, "... It means something to be a graduate of this school, it means something to come from this community, and it means something to consider a return when you're in a position ot choose your zip code moving forward.

"That's why you see the word Hays throughout this building. We want you back here."

He urged parents and community members to tour the many areas of the school that will help students achieve greatness. Some of those included a new performing arts center, athletic fields, art studios, journalism and video production labs, culinary arts kitchen, and collaborative spaces.

"Now that we have the building, we are going to continue pushing to be the best. We are going to raise the bar and strive towards excellence each and every day," Henderson said.

Ishita Banerjii, DLR project manager, said she was pleased to help design a building that will help the Hays students shine for years to come.

"As Ron said, this is not a school for one generation. It is a school for multiple generations," she said. "We know that we have given you a design that will serve you and that you will be proud of for years to come."

Brett Collins of Nabholz said it is truly amazing what can be accomplished when a community comes together and invests in their kids' future.

He thanked the Hays community for welcoming Nabholz during the last two years.

"We couldn't be more proud of this project, and it's been a pleasure to serve you all," he said.

The new school, which opened to students on Aug. 20, was opened to the public for tours after the ceremony.

The school was funded through a $143.5 million bond issue. The former high school is being remodeled for use as a middle school. Students are set to move into that space in January.

The final project in the bond is the renovation of the current high school into a new elementary school.

An expansion and renovation are underway at&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/9c9d8521-815b-4f1d-8bf6-ddea11091306" target="_blank">O'Loughlin Elementary School</a>, and an expansion and renovation were completed at&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4ecf935d-41cb-472c-9754-49c567a9dddc" target="_blank">Roosevelt Elementary School</a>&nbsp;last year.

They worked many hours to box up the contents of the former high school and prepare the new building for the start of the school year, he said.<figure>

 </figure>He thanked the school board for its support as well as DLR and Nabholz Construction, whose staff left their families for up to two years to build the new Hays High.He praised Hays High Principal Shawn Henderson for his work on shaping the plans for the school while also running a 1,000-student high school and earning a High School Principal of the Year Award.<figure>

 </figure>Henderson also praised the staff for their hard work preparing the school for students.&nbsp;"Their professionalism, care, and concern are unmatched," he said, "and they are truly what make the walls of this school come to life. One of our district's core values is to 'sell the opportunities and possibilities' for our students' futures, and they exemplify that every day."He thanked the school board and the community for valuing students enough to provide them with an innovative space.To the students he said, "... It means something to be a graduate of this school, it means something to come from this community, and it means something to consider a return when you're in a position ot choose your zip code moving forward."That's why you see the word Hays throughout this building.  </figure>He urged parents and community members to tour the many areas of the school that will help students achieve greatness. Some of those included a new performing arts center, athletic fields, art studios, journalism and video production labs, culinary arts kitchen, and collaborative spaces."Now that we have the building, we are going to continue pushing to be the best. We are going to raise the bar and strive towards excellence each and every day," Henderson said.Ishita Banerjii, DLR project manager, said she was pleased to help design a building that will help the Hays students shine for years to come."As Ron said, this is not a school for one generation. It is a school for multiple generations," she said. "We know that we have given you a design that will serve you and that you will be proud of for years to come."Brett Collins of Nabholz said it is truly amazing what can be accomplished when a community comes together and invests in their kids' future.He thanked the Hays community for welcoming Nabholz during the last two years."We couldn't be more proud of this project, and it's been a pleasure to serve you all," he said.The new school, which opened to students on Aug. 20, was opened to the public for tours after the ceremony.The school was funded through a $143.5 million bond issue. The former high school is being remodeled for use as a middle school. Students are set to move into that space in January.The final project in the bond is the renovation of the current high school into a new elementary school.An expansion and renovation are underway at&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/9c9d8521-815b-4f1d-8bf6-ddea11091306" target="_blank">O'Loughlin Elementary School</a>, and an expansion and renovation were completed at&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4ecf935d-41cb-472c-9754-49c567a9dddc" target="_blank">Roosevelt Elementary School</a>&nbsp;last year.

HAYS - The Hays High volleyball team opened their 2025 season by hosting the Maroon and Gold Tournament at the new Hays High School gym. The Indians finished 3-2 on the day.

HHS opened the day with a two-set win over Scott City but lost their next two matches to Lawrence Free State and Olathe West in straight sets to go 1-2 in pool play.

In bracket play, the Indians defeated Clearwater and TMP-Marian in straight sets two win the Silver Bracket champinship.

HAYS -&nbsp;With the start of the season less than a week away, the TMP-Marian Monarchs football team hosted its first-ever jamboree Friday night at Lewis Field in Hays.

The Monarchs hosted MCL rivals Plainville, Larned, and Ellsworth.

"I thought we competed really well today," TMP coach Grant Stephenson said." 

"You practice for two weeks, and you almost get tired of it," Stephenson said. "You need to see something against someone else, and so it was nice to have this, and the way our guys competed tonight, I told them I was proud of them."
