Laurie L. Hill, age 54, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 19, 
2021, at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was 
born on October 16, 1966, in Napa Valley, California, the daughter of 
Harry Lynn and Margaret Elizabeth Luizer Hill.&nbsp; A resident of Scott 
City, Kansas, since 2005 moving from Oroville, California, she was a 
homemaker.

Laurie’s longtime companion, Johnny Joe Leal, passed away on September 21, 2020, in Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include her Three Children - Patricia &amp; Oscar Barbosa 
of Scott City, Kansas, Susan Casteneda of Oroville, California, David 
Ruiz of Chico, California, One Brother - Jack Glass of Scott City, 
Kansas, Three Sisters - Susan Hill of Scott City, Kansas, Brenda Hill of
 Oroville, California, Tina Hill of Oroville, California, and Nine 
Grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2021,
 at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas with Pastor Kyle

Laurie Lynn Hill

Vera Marie (Bennett) Musser passed away on November 18, 2020 at Grand 
Villa in Grand Junction, Colorado. She was born on October 31, 1926, to 
Roland Matthew Bennett II and Hattie Myrtle Ridgway Bennett of Alma, 
Nebraska.
 Vera grew up in Alma until meeting Bert Musser at a farm sale in 
Smith Center, Kansas. Bert and Vera dated all her senior year and were 
married January 18, 1945 on her parent’s wedding anniversary at the 
First Presbyterian Church. While living in Smith Center they ran what 
came to be known as Musser Oil Company. During time there they welcomed 
son, Ray and then daughter, Carol to join big brother. Vera was a 
stay-at-home mom who not only cared for her children, but for friends’ 
children. She was involved in their church. The family moved to Denver 
in 1955. 1960 brought a new addition to the family, baby Bob to play 
with Ray and Carol. They moved to Greeley in 1962. They purchased 
Greeley Auto Supply in 1965.
 Vera was active not only in her children’s activities. She was 
Social Secretary of Women’s Association for the First United 
Presbyterian Church. Guardian Treasurer of Jobs Daughters. She was also 
Worthy Matron of Order of Eastern Star. Member of Social Order of 
Beauceant, and member of the Red Hat Society.
 Vera and Bert thoroughly enjoyed years of travel with Vogue 
Motorcoach group. They were active in El Jebel Shriners Mariners 
organization. Square dancing was something they both loved to do. For 
years they also spent winters in Mesa, Arizona. She returned to Greeley 
after Bert had passed away. Vera lived in Greeley until after the death 
of beloved daughter, Carol in 2018. Moving to Grand Junction, Colorado 
she spent her last years to be near son, Ray and family.
 Vera is survived by two sons, Ray (Kristy) Musser and Robert Musser.
 Pete Feit (Carol deceased 2018). Grandchildren are Kerri Feit Justus 
(Chad), Jarrod (JR) Musser, Kelsey Musser Friesen (Jer), Nikki Feit 
Dinges (Tony), Stephanie Sleight (Ryan), and Cassandra Hammer (Bruce).

Phillipsburg resident Ralph W. Bohl passed away Friday, April 16, 2021, at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg at the age of 98.

He was born October 11, 1922, in Phillips County, KS the son of Conrad J. and Lena S. (Carsten) Bohl.

Ralph was united in marriage to Eileen Rowland on October 20, 1945, in Stuttgart, KS.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on November 24, 2018.&nbsp;

He was also preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, 2 brothers, and four grandchildren.

Survivors include his 2 sons James and Steve both of Phillipsburg; 2 daughters Judy Fuchs of New Albany, IN and Pat Sheneman of Holdrege, NE; 7 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 10 great great grandchildren.

Cremation was planned.&nbsp; A private graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 23, 2021 in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, with Pastor James Peterson officiating.&nbsp; The services will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today reminded taxpayers to
 check their tax returns for common errors that could delay refunds or 
otherwise affect normal processing. Here are some ways to avoid tax 
return slipups as the May 17 due date gets closer.

Use electronic filing. Filing electronically, whether through IRS <a href="https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free">Free File</a> or other <a href="https://www.irs.gov/filing/e-file-options">e-file</a>
 service providers, is a great way to cut the chances for many tax 
return mistakes and maximize deductions to reduce tax owed at the same 
time. The tax software automatically applies the latest tax laws, checks
 for available credits or deductions, does the calculations, and asks 
taxpayers for all required information.

Report all taxable income. Be sure to have income 
documents on hand before starting the tax return. Examples are Forms 
W-2, 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC. Underreporting income may lead to <a href="https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/understanding-penalties-and-interest">penalties and interest</a>.

Get names and Social Security numbers right. Enter 
each Social Security number (SSN) and individual's name on a tax return 
exactly as printed on the Social Security card. Persons generally must 
list on their individual income tax return the SSN of any person they 
claim as a dependent. If a dependent or spouse does not have and is not 
eligible to get a SSN, list the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/taxpayer-identification-numbers-tin">Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN)</a> instead of a SSN.

Learn about filing status. If taxpayers are unsure about their filing status, the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/help/ita">Interactive Tax Assistant</a>
 on IRS.gov can help them choose the correct status, especially if more 
than one filing status applies. Tax software, including IRS Free File, 
also helps prevent mistakes with filing status.

Correctly answer the virtual currency question. The 
2020 Form 1040 asks whether at any time during 2020, a person received, 
sold, sent, exchanged or otherwise acquired any financial interest in 
any virtual currency. If a taxpayer's only transactions involving 
virtual currency during 2020 were purchases of virtual currency, they 
are not required to answer "yes"&nbsp;to the question.

Mail paper returns to the right address. Paper filers should check the right address for <a href="https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment">where to file</a>
 on IRS.gov or on form instructions to avoid processing delays. Note 
that due to staffing issues related to COVID-19, processing paper tax 
returns could take much longer than usual. Taxpayers and tax 
professionals are encouraged to file electronically if possible.

Use the right routing and account numbers. 
Requesting direct deposit of a federal refund into one, two or even 
three accounts is convenient and allows the taxpayer access to his or 
her money faster. Make sure the financial institution routing and 
account numbers entered on the return are accurate. Incorrect numbers 
can cause a refund to be delayed or deposited into the wrong account. 
Taxpayers can also use their refund to <a href="https://www.irs.gov/refunds/now-you-can-buy-us-series-i-savings-bonds-for-anyone-with-your-tax-refund">purchase U.S. Savings Bonds</a>.

Sign and date the return. If filing a joint return, 
both spouses must sign and date the return. E-filers can sign using a 
self-selected personal identification number (PIN).

Keep a copy. When ready to file, taxpayers should make a copy of their signed return and all schedules for their records.

Request an extension, if needed. Taxpayers who 
cannot meet the May 17 deadline can easily request an automatic filing 
extension to October&nbsp;15 and prevent late filing <a href="https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc653">penalties</a>. Use Free File or <a href="https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-4868">Form 4868</a>. But keep in mind that while an extension grants additional time to file, tax payments are still due May 17.

James Robert “Jim” Vance, 70, died on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at his 
home in Lane County. He was born on May 28, 1950, at Topeka and on 
October 19, 1950, was adopted by Rev Robert B. &amp; Violet M. Vance. He
 married Harriet Cartmill on September 28, 1974, at Dighton. 
Jim graduated from Russell High School in 1968 and attended Oklahoma 
City University for a short time. He moved to Dighton in 1970 and 
worked for Larry Neeley for 20 years, ran his custom baling business for
 3 years and worked at Lane County Feeders for 9 years. He was a member
 of the United Methodist Church in Dighton where he spent time on the 
Administration Board and was a long time member of the church choir. He
 was a participant in the community melodramas and dinner theaters but 
his biggest joy was his grandchildren and being a farmer. 
He is survived by his Wife- Harriet Vance, 3 Sons- Mark &amp; Nicolle 
Vance of Scott City, Steve Vance of Norton and Bryce &amp; Lisa Vance of
 Scott City and 6 Grandchildren- Megan Vance, Cody Vance, Cauy Vance, 
Evie Vance, Grady Vance and Maya Vance.

Elsie Mildred Conine

Donna Lee McAllaster, 90, passed away April 14, 2021, at Harry Hynes 
Memorial Hospice, Wichita. She was born January 20, 1931, at a small 
farm on the banks of Turkey Creek in Gosper County, Neb. to Loyal R. 
&amp; Mabel (Stump) Rhodes. Times on the farm were rough during the 
Great Depression, but they felt fortunate to always have milk, eggs, 
garden produce, and chickens.&nbsp; She learned to sew using the fabric from 
flour sacks.

By the time she graduated from High School, she had enough hoeing, 
weeding, hauling feed, milking, riding farm equipment, and plucking 
chickens to last a lifetime.&nbsp; She taught school for a year in a one-room
 schoolhouse, with no running water and a wood stove for heat. She later
 said that was the biggest challenge she ever had.

The next year she married a skinny pre-med student from western 
Kansas named Wendale E. McAllaster January 28, 1950 at her family home.&nbsp;
 She soon had more challenges, running the household and raising 
children among the demands of his surgical practice.&nbsp; They had a loving 
partnership for over 50 years.&nbsp; He died October 18, 2015.

A Great Bend resident since 1962, Donna was a homemaker, property 
manager, and volunteer.&nbsp; She was a member of First United Methodist 
Church, PEO, Progress Study Club, Barton County Alliance, Threadbenders 
Quilt Club, and Community Concert Board.&nbsp;&nbsp; She served as a Camp Fire and
 Cub Scout Leader, and driver for Meals on Wheels.&nbsp; Donna loved to quilt
 and sing with The Creatures of Habit.

Her greatest challenge really came after she no longer had the words 
to describe it.&nbsp; She negotiated the many disorientations and 
frustrations of Alzheimer’s with grace and dignity.&nbsp; She remained a kind

and Luke Feil and wife Christa; and five great grandchildren. She was 
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. Wendale E. 
McAllaster; and her brother, Doran L. Rhodes.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, April 18, 
2021 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 4:00 to
 6:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 19,
 2021, at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with Pastor 
Morita Truman presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.

 </figure>Donna Lee McAllaster, 90, passed away April 14, 2021, at Harry Hynes 
Memorial Hospice, Wichita. She was born January 20, 1931, at a small 
farm on the banks of Turkey Creek in Gosper County, Neb. to Loyal R. 
&amp; Mabel (Stump) Rhodes. Times on the farm were rough during the 
Great Depression, but they felt fortunate to always have milk, eggs, 
garden produce, and chickens.&nbsp; She learned to sew using the fabric from 
flour sacks.By the time she graduated from High School, she had enough hoeing, 
weeding, hauling feed, milking, riding farm equipment, and plucking 
chickens to last a lifetime.&nbsp; She taught school for a year in a one-room
 schoolhouse, with no running water and a wood stove for heat. She later
 said that was the biggest challenge she ever had.The next year she married a skinny pre-med student from western 
Kansas named Wendale E. McAllaster January 28, 1950 at her family home.&nbsp;
 She soon had more challenges, running the household and raising 
children among the demands of his surgical practice.&nbsp; They had a loving 
partnership for over 50 years.&nbsp; He died October 18, 2015.A Great Bend resident since 1962, Donna was a homemaker, property 
manager, and volunteer.&nbsp; She was a member of First United Methodist 
Church, PEO, Progress Study Club, Barton County Alliance, Threadbenders 
Quilt Club, and Community Concert Board.&nbsp;&nbsp; She served as a Camp Fire and
 Cub Scout Leader, and driver for Meals on Wheels.&nbsp; Donna loved to quilt
 and sing with The Creatures of Habit.Her greatest challenge really came after she no longer had the words 
to describe it.&nbsp; She negotiated the many disorientations and 
frustrations of Alzheimer’s with grace and dignity.&nbsp; She remained a kind
 and gentle soul with an iron backbone to the end, and loved her God and

Donna Lee McAllaster

Carol Kathleen Carlin passed away on April 11, 2021. She was 81 years old, although she always told everyone she was 27.

She was born Carol Kathleen Glennemeier on October 29, 1939, in Densmore, KS to Francis and Agnes Glennemeier. She grew up on the farm with her three sisters, Marilyn, Roxie, Gayla and her three brothers, Bob, Bill, and Gary. She graduated from Densmore High School and then attended a women’s business college in Denver where she learned book work and accounting.

Carol went to work at the Lenora Exchange Bank once she returned from business college, where she met her husband, Weldon “Willie” Carlin. They married on February 9, 1961, and lived in Kansas City until he had completed his schooling in auto body work.

They moved back to Norton and started 60 years of life together that included bringing up four kids, Kathy, Marcelyn, John, and Brad. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years. She then went to work at JCPenney’s for a while and then Loves. Carol found her calling when she went to work at the Norton County Sheriff’s Office. She worked as a dispatcher for 25 years and almost always loved it. She was “Mom” to many that seemed to spend a little time occasionally in their accommodations.

Carol loved to read, do cross stitch, color, and play games. She believed that having hobbies kept her mind active. She was always looking for a new hobby to learn. She loved to go for rides out to the state park to see the lake and the animals. She would especially get excited when the turkeys were visible and when the white geese would come back.

Carol is survived by her husband, Weldon Carlin of Norton; her children: Kathy Carlin of Norton, Marcelyn Carlin of Hill City, John Carlin of Norton and his son, Chance Keiswetter of Hays, and Brad Carlin and his wife Chris of Norcatur; grandchildren: Kyle &amp; Stephanie Carlin and their kids Lauren and Evan; Donald and Kylie Eggleston and their kids, Vicki, Kori, and Liam, and Brian Carlin, Heath Welch, and Alex Fischer. Her survivors also include those she saw as her own kids, Troy Thomson and Tim Millan and all of those who at one time or another called her Mom. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandson, Lucas Welch.

Esther L. Ruder, 94, Hays, died Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care.

She was born October 24, 1926 in 
Munjor, the daughter of Lawrence and Katherine (Doerfler) Rohr.&nbsp; On 
November 4, 1946 she was united in marriage to Edwin R. Ruder in Hays, 
and they celebrated 34 years of marriage before he preceded her in death
 on July 7, 1981.&nbsp; Esther worked at Travenol for ten years.&nbsp; Her 
memberships include St. Joseph Catholic Church and the VFW Post #9076 
Auxiliary.&nbsp; She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and 
wordsearches, researching family genealogy, and was an avid Kansas City 
Royals fan.&nbsp; She loved her family, having her grandchildren at her home,
 and sharing her love of cooking, baking cookies, and embroidering tea 
towels with them.

Survivors include two sons: Clifford 
Ruder and wife Irene of Guam and Harvey Ruder and wife Roxie of Corpus 
Christi, TX, a daughter: Joyce Adams and husband Rocky of Quinter, two 
brothers: Floyd Rohr and wife Margie of Hays and Walter Rohr of Florida,
 a sister: Ruth Pfeifer of Hays, 13 grandchildren, 35 great 
grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and 
nephews.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, her husband: Edwin, a son: David Ruder, a daughter: Sharon 
Nelson, five brothers: Elmer, Bert, Vern, Fr. Vincent, and Leroy Rohr, a
 sister: Minnie Zimmerman, a grandson: Clayton Ruder, and a great

Esther L. Ruder

Bruce E. McIntyre, 82, joined the love of his life, Margarett, on 
Friday, April 9, 2021. He was born November 21, 1938 in Avon, South 
Dakota, the son of Walter &amp; Florence (Nieuwenhuis) McIntyre. 
 On October 12, 1957, he married Margarett E. Knouse in Scott City, 
Kansas. After living in various places, Bruce and Margarett returned to
 Garden City in the late 1980’s. They have lived in Garden City since. 
 Bruce worked most of his life in the drilling business and was the 
owner and operator of M&amp; W Drilling Co. He and his family also 
owned and operated the Continental Inn in Garden City. 
 He was a proud member of the Patriot Guard. He loved to spend his 
time in the outdoors and was a big motorcycle enthusiast. He also loved
 RC cars, racing, traveling, fishing, model airplances, volunteering his
 time helping people especially children. Most of all, Bruce loved to 
attend his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities. 
 Survivors include his children Kimberly (Jose) Garcia of Garden 
City, Kevin (Tami) McIntyre of Amarillo, Texas, and Kerri (Richard A.) 
Sperry of Garden City; twelve grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 
his siblings Luella Smith of Colby, Kansas, Clayton McIntyre of Salt 
Lake City, Utah, Raeburn Drake of Fallbrook, California, Sandra Donlon 
of Pueblo, Colorado, Marilyn Wheeler of Branson, Missouri, Roxie Berning
 of Augusta, Kansas, and Relda Everett of Evergreen, Colorado; and his 
sisters-in-law Kit (Kenny) Green of Garden City, and Annie Mather of 
Meade, Kansas. 
 Bruce is preceded in death by his wife Margarett who died on March 
12, 2020. He is also preceded in death by his parents and two 
granddaughters.

Jerry Lee Maxwell

James Peter Johnson, 85, passed away on April 8, 2021, at the Hays 
Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on October 1, 1935, in 
Omaha, Nebraska the son of Edwin and Rose (Cutis) Johnson.

Jim and Nadra met in Omaha through mutual friends while she was going
 to school. They married on October 13, 1957, in Omaha. In 1958, they moved
 to Utica and started farming with her dad. She survives.

Other survivors include his son, Jeff Johnson and his wife, Ramona, 
of Utica; his daughter, Diedra "Dee Dee" McCallum and her husband, Mac, 
of Valley Center; three sisters, Mildred Walenz, Carolyn Jones, both of 
Omaha, and Marilyn Strickland of St. Cloud, Florida; six grandchildren, 
J.D. Johnson and his wife, Kayla, Jordan Johnson, Joni Johnson, Reid 
McCallum, Harmon McCallum, and Kirby McCallum and three great 
grandchildren, Meredith, Alex, and Sloan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Corinne Morris ad Charlotte Wietzki.

James Peter Johnson

Harry Hugh Adams died April 6, 2021, at 95 years of age surrounded by 
loved ones.&nbsp; He was born August 6, 1925, to Ray “Roy” J. and Gladys 
Goldie (McCarty) Adams.&nbsp; His sister and brothers were Gussie “Louise” 
Adams Estabrook, Edwin Birdene “Bud” Adams, Willard Eugene “Gene” Adams,
 Earl Ray “Tex” Adams, John Glenn Adams, Frederick “Merle” Adams, Billie
 LaDon “Don” Adams. All have preceded him in death.

A veteran of World War II, Harry joined the army September 1943 
shortly after his 18th birthday and was assigned as a gunner in Patton's
 80th infantry division.&nbsp; After being wounded by artillery shrapnel

Harry returned home from the war and on October 11, 1946, he married 
the love of his life, Barbara Beth Bryant.&nbsp; They were married 69 years 
and delighted in their children — and ESPECIALLY delighted in their 9 
grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.&nbsp;
 Each child had their own special relationship with them as did their 
numerous nephews and nieces. He loved his family/ extended family. 
Barbara preceded him in death and he greatly missed her every day.

Harry worked in the oil fields - his work ethic was stellar.&nbsp; His 
vast experience in many different positions/roles, jobs, and locations 
afforded him countless work related friends and acquaintances.&nbsp; He 
finally totally retired at 85 years of age.

Growing tomatoes and other vegetables was one of his great passions.&nbsp;
 He had a huge garden every year, loved hearing about your garden, 
offered advice for your garden failures, celebrated your garden 
successes, and gave away most of what he grew.&nbsp;

Cards and domino playing were spirited affairs. If you were his 
partner in card games, you had better be on your toes and paying 
attention.&nbsp;

He loved to drive and drove all over – especially enjoyed driving 
around the Chase, Kansas areas where he grew up.&nbsp; He taught many 
grandchildren how to drive on country and county roads – way before they
 were of age.&nbsp; During these times he imparted his wisdom and told his 
childhood and oil field work stories to help guide them on their paths 
in life.&nbsp;

After retiring and before covid was an issue, he went to coffee most 
every day.&nbsp; There he connected with new and old friends of various ages 
from all walks of life.&nbsp; Business establishments in surrounding areas 
that he frequented knew his name and greeted him when he walked in the 
door.

Harry had “a thousand” whimsical words, sayings, and songs that would
 make you smile or laugh out loud – that is if you were able to 
understand his “Adams-Language” and keep up with his rapid fire speech.&nbsp;
 He enjoyed working hard (“getting powerful”) and had clever ideas 
(“cowboy tricks” and “franthanies”).&nbsp; If you met him, you’ll never 
forget him.&nbsp;

It would be hard to talk about Harry without mentioning his faith in 
Jesus Christ.&nbsp; He had promised God if he survived the war he would 
attend church and dragged all 4 kids to church every Sunday for many 
years.&nbsp; He read his bible and prayed daily for others.&nbsp; He started his 
prayers with “Dear God, we are grateful for this day.”

Harry was also preceded in death by his grandson Kyle Tomey and 
son-in-law Alex Ybarra.&nbsp; He is survived by his children ~Kent Adams 
(Sharon Ochs) – Hutchinson, Brenda Ybarra – Mound Valley, Lynn Adams 
(Ann) – Bison, and Gale Adams Briscoe (Ron Briscoe) – Wichita.

Visitation for friends and relatives wishing to pay their respects will be Tuesday, April 13th
 from noon to 9 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home (1425 S. Patton Rd.) in 
Great Bend, Kansas with family present from 4-6 p.m.&nbsp; Please wear a 
mask.

Honoring Harry’s wishes, a private burial service will be held for immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to, in care of the 
funeral home, to Chase/Raymond USD 401 School District Alumni 
Association, where Harry graduated from in the 8th grade – Go Kats!

Harry Hugh Adam

Frederick Allen Wohlcke, 67, died January 3, 2021, at Stormont Vail 
Hospital, Topeka.&nbsp; He was born October 19, 1953, in Pratt, Kansas, the 
son of Andrew and Mary Ellen (Anderson) Wohlcke.&nbsp; Fred graduated from 
Hoisington High School in 1971 and went on to get his degree in 
engineering from Kansas State University.&nbsp;

A lifetime Hoisington resident, Fred worked for over 30 years as a 
civil engineer at Evans, Bierly, Hutchinson &amp; Associates of Great 
Bend.&nbsp; He enjoyed cooking, spending time with his Boston Terrier, Mindy 
and also playing video games and gambling.&nbsp;

He is survived by; his sister, Vicki Wilton and husband Larry of 
Hoisington and his brother, Tom Wohlcke of Hoisington; two nieces, Laura
 Hall of Berthoud, Colorado, and Tina Marchiani of Colorado Springs, 
Colorado; three nephews, Jeff Wohlcke of Manhattan, Kansas, Jarrod 
Wohlcke of Pueblo, Colorado; and Greg Wohlcke of Westminster, Colorado; 
and numerous great nieces and nephews.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 12th, 2021 the Hoisington Cemetery.

Frederick Allen Wohlcke

Mildred Waldren, 94, of Tribune, KS, passed away unexpectedly on 
Sunday, April 4, 2021, in Girard, KS.&nbsp; She was visiting Waldren 
relatives for Easter Sunday, and while taking a nap, passed away 
peacefully surrounded by her loving family.&nbsp; Mildred went out on her 
terms, still sharp until the very end.&nbsp; She died on what would have been
 her 70th wedding anniversary.&nbsp; This is a celebration of her life.

Mildred Opal Waldren was born southeast of Arapahoe in Cheyenne 
County, CO, in a sod house, on February 5, 1927.&nbsp; She had five sisters 
and two brothers.&nbsp; Her father, Elias Avery Jones, was a farmer and her 
mother, Caroline Susanne (Talmon) Jones was a housewife.&nbsp; Mildred was 
long impacted by the great depression and the Dust Bowl in the 1930s 
that made life extremely difficult for the Jones family, and for most 
people living on the great plains. While poor, no one in the Jones 
family ever went to bed hungry.

Mildred graduated from Arapahoe High School in 1945, and with the 
scholarship she received as valedictorian of her class, went to Blair 
Business College in Colorado Springs, CO.&nbsp; She graduated with a business
 certificate in 1947, and then moved to Tribune, KS, in August 1947.&nbsp; 
She began employment as the secretary in the KSU Greeley County 
Extension office in August 1947, just two weeks before the Greeley 
County Fair.&nbsp; She then was involved in some major capacity with every 
Greeley County Fair (74 consecutive years) through 2020.&nbsp; Mildred was 
looking forward to her 75th fair in 2021.

Attending a dance at the American Legion hall in Tribune in October 
1947, she met Buford Waldren.&nbsp; They were married in Raton, NM, on April 
4.&nbsp; Returning to Tribune, Buford and Mildred lived in a newly 
constructed house in town. Mildred continued to work at the Extension 
office until October 1952, when she resigned due to upcoming motherhood.

Vernon Lee was born on February 6, 1953, and Deryl Eugene was born on
 June 6, 1955.&nbsp; They continued to live in town until November 1956, when
 they moved to the farm southwest of Tribune, when Garry S. Waldren, 
Mildred’s father-in-law died.&nbsp; Mildred lived on the farm for the rest of
 her life.&nbsp; Buford and Mildred ran a wheat-cattle operation, and Mildred
 was a homemaker.

Mildred began working in the Greeley County Register of Deeds office 
part-time in 1983, and went full-time in 1988.&nbsp; She loved working there 
with Dee Anna Schneider and Lisa Robertson.&nbsp; She retired in September 
2012 at age 85.

Buford died March 19, 1998, after a long illness.&nbsp; Mildred remained 
on the farm and took over managing the wheat farming, while continuing 
to work fulltime at the register of deeds office.

Mildred was especially proud of and dearly loved her three 
grandchildren and frequently went to Omaha, NE, with the other Grandma 
Smith to help babysit when the parents were out-of-town with work.

She also loved to travel and was always on the go.&nbsp; She often stated 
that she never thought she would get to travel as much as she did.&nbsp; 
Highlights included trips to Germany, France and Austria in 1999; the 
Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium in 2005; Italy, Germany, and 
Switzerland in 2009; the Alaskan cruise in 2013; the Panama Canal cruise
 in 2017; the national parks of the west trip in 2019, plus many 
domestic trips around the USA.

Mildred was the embodiment of what a volunteer is.&nbsp; She understood 
the need to support one’s community and strongly supported Greeley 
County and Tribune in multiple ways for 74 years.&nbsp; Her volunteer 
accomplishments are vast and extensive.&nbsp; While never a 4-H member 
herself, she quickly understood the value of 4-H, and gave openly to 
support the youth of Greeley County.

Greeley County volunteer 4-H leader, 1950 – 2021.&nbsp; She was the 
organizational leader of the Go-Getters 4-H Club from 1950 – 2014.&nbsp; She 
was a project leader for 71 years in many projects, including:&nbsp; clothing

crocheting, embroidery, cake decorating, foods, photography and 
woodworking

K-State Research and Extension agent, Todd Schmidt shared, “One of 
her most valuable attributes, was her one-on-one mentoring ability.&nbsp; I 
have had more 4-H alumni comment on how they truly treasured the 
individual mentoring by Mildred, whether it was learning how to sew, 
learning the duties of 4-H club president, or simply learning about 
life.&nbsp; Mildred was always a ‘straight shooter’, yet she showed 
compassion, genuine interest, and love for whomever she was mentoring.”

A former 4-H member of Mildred’s, Dee Anna P. Schneider shared her 
thoughts.&nbsp; “The thousands of hours Mildred volunteered leading her club 
and teaching projects, made her not only a great mentor, but a life-long
 friend as well.&nbsp; Past 4-H members have “Mildred Stories” they continue 
to share and many of them are now parents and grandparents to another 
generation of 4-H’ers.&nbsp; As a 4-H member myself in the 1960s and 1970s, I
 thought Mildred Waldren started 4-H!&nbsp; When I became a project leader, a
 4-H parent and then a club leader, Mildred was there to guide me.&nbsp; I 
was also fortunate to have her as an employee in the Register of Deeds 
Office for many years.&nbsp; Mildred was a great mentor and friend to 
everyone.”

Mildred was selected as the Monsanto National 4-H Volunteer of the 
year in 2013, and was honored as the sole recipient during the 2013 
Extension Galaxy Conference in Pittsburgh, PA.&nbsp; She donated the $1,000 
prize money back to Greeley County 4-H volunteers towards the building 
of a covered rest area adjacent to the 4-H Building on the Greeley Co. 
Fairgrounds.

Mildred is survived by two sons:&nbsp; Vernon (Cheri) Waldren of 
Papillion, NE; Deryl Waldren of Colby, KS.&nbsp; She is also survived by 
three grandchildren:&nbsp; Jennifer (Bryce) Weber of St. George, UT; Andrew 
(Jennifer) Waldren of Omaha, NE/Central Asia; Heather Judy of Beaufort, 
South Carolina; and one step-grandchild, Lacy (Nathan) Eicher of 
Bellevue, NE.&nbsp; Great-Grandchildren are:&nbsp; Michael John Waldren, Nathanael
 Waldren, Isabelle Waldren, Samuel Waldren, and Orion Weber.&nbsp; 
Step-Great-Grandchildren are:&nbsp; Emma Eicher, Liam Eicher, Rowyn Eicher, 
Graeme Eicher, and Mairen Eicher.&nbsp; Two sisters survive her:&nbsp; Edna Grubb,
 Tribune and Dorothy Hull, Inman, KS.&nbsp; Mildred is also survived by 
numerous nieces and nephews, great, great-great, and great-great-great 
nieces and nephews.

Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. MT, Wednesday, April 
14th, and 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. MT, April 15th at Price &amp; Sons 
Funeral Home in Tribune, Kansas.

Funeral Services will be in Tribune, KS, on Friday, April 16 with grandson Andrew Waldren and Jeri Farmer Smith presiding.

11:30 a.m. MT, Greeley County 4-H Building, Tribune, lunch provided 
by the Tribune United Methodist Women for family, close friends and 
out-of-town attendees

have had more 4-H alumni comment on how they truly treasured the 
individual mentoring by Mildred, whether it was learning how to sew, 
learning the duties of 4-H club president, or simply learning about 
life.&nbsp; Mildred was always a ‘straight shooter’, yet she showed 
compassion, genuine interest, and love for whomever she was mentoring.”A former 4-H member of Mildred’s, Dee Anna P. Schneider shared her 
thoughts.&nbsp; “The thousands of hours Mildred volunteered leading her club 
and teaching projects, made her not only a great mentor, but a life-long
 friend as well.&nbsp; Past 4-H members have “Mildred Stories” they continue 
to share and many of them are now parents and grandparents to another 
generation of 4-H’ers.&nbsp; As a 4-H member myself in the 1960s and 1970s, I
 thought Mildred Waldren started 4-H!&nbsp; When I became a project leader, a
 4-H parent and then a club leader, Mildred was there to guide me.&nbsp; I 
was also fortunate to have her as an employee in the Register of Deeds 
Office for many years.&nbsp; Mildred was a great mentor and friend to 
everyone.”Mildred was selected as the Monsanto National 4-H Volunteer of the 
year in 2013, and was honored as the sole recipient during the 2013 
Extension Galaxy Conference in Pittsburgh, PA.&nbsp; She donated the $1,000 
prize money back to Greeley County 4-H volunteers towards the building 
of a covered rest area adjacent to the 4-H Building on the Greeley Co.

Mildred Waldren

CHICAGO (AP) — There wasn’t much doubt Lance Lynn would go back out to finish this one. Manager Tony La Russa turned to him and asked how he was feeling.

“He looked at me and said, ‘Are you good?’” Lynn said. “I said, ‘I’m gonna finish it. Does that sound good?’ He goes, ‘Sounds good.’ And that was pretty much it.”

Lynn pitched a five-hitter for the first complete game and shutout in the major leagues this season, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 6-0 on a rainy Thursday.

Yermín Mercedes kept up his scorching start with a 485-foot&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/whitesox/status/1380293851416518660" target="_blank">homer</a>. Yoán Moncada&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/whitesox/status/1380289615911907333" target="_blank">went deep</a>, and the White Sox gave manager Tony La Russa the win in his first home game on the South Side in 35 years.

Lynn (1-0) struck out 11 and walked none in his second shutout in 238 career starts, his first since a five-hitter against the New York Yankees on May 27, 2014.

Acquired from Texas in the offseason, Lynn threw 79 of 111 pitches for strikes in his fourth career complete game. The 33-year-old right-hander struck out the first three batters and did not allow a runner until Salvador Pérez led off the fifth with an infield single.

La Russa saw Lynn’s potential when he managed him in 2011 as a rookie with St. Louis. Lynn went on to become an innings-eating workhorse who can keep hitters off balance with a variety of pitches.

“He was really competitive,” La Russa said. “Now, what he’s added is experience. Ball does different things. He has three different fastballs. He has a nice breaking ball. He’s really just become a veteran pitcher who understands, keeps adding here, adding there so the hitters have to see different things. It’s really impressive.”

Moncada hit a two-run homer in the first, and Mercedes followed with a long shot to left-center against Brad Keller to make it 3-0. The 28-year-old rookie went 2 for 4, giving him a major league-leading 15 hits in 27 at-bats. And the White Sox came away with an easy win in a game delayed more than two hours at the start.

La Russa had not managed a home game on the South Side since a loss to the California Angels on June 11, 1986. Chicago fired him soon in a move chairman Jerry Reinsdorf regretted allowing, and the White Sox brought back the Hall of Famer in October to replace Rick Renteria, hoping he can push them to a championship.

“I could feel the excitement,” La Russa said. “The fans are looking forward to watching this club.”

Keller (0-1), coming off the shortest opening-day start in franchise history, got tagged for four runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings after getting just four outs against Texas last week.

Lynn, meanwhile, established his fastball and overpowered Kansas City.

“It was hard sinker, hard cut, trust movement,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “I think that’s probably a lot like the conversation that we’ve already had with Brad. Anna Janell Kaiser, 82, passed away April 7, 2021, at Woodhaven Care 
Center, Ellinwood. She was born on October 26, 1938, in Henderson, KY, 
to Earnest and Alvera (Cook) Fisher. She married Donald Peter Kaiser on 
May 10, 1958, in Great Bend.&nbsp; He died May 7, 2009.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Anna was a housekeeper for Best 
Western and Larned State Hospital, previously working at Rexall Drug. 
She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic 
Church and the Altar Society. She enjoyed playing bingo, cooking, baking
 and attending craft shows.

Survivors include, two sons, Dale Kaiser (Aimee Johnston) of Kansas 
City, KS, and Devin Kaiser and wife&nbsp; Kristie of Hoisington; a daughter, 
Donna Fisher and husband Rik of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Trudy
 Richardson of Great Bend; and three grandchildren, Mackenzie Kaiser, 
Trevor Kaiser and Anneka Fisher. She was preceded in death by her 
parents; her husband, Donald Kaiser; and a sister, Lois Befort.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, April

Anna Janell Kaiser

Ann (Yeisley) Becker, 69, Norton, KS, passed away on Monday, April 5, 2021. She was born in Cedar Rapids, IA, on January 27, 1952, to Retta (Knapp) and Arther Yeisley. 

In her young adulthood, Ann attended Central Missouri State University and lived in Topeka, KS, and Taipei, Taiwan, before moving to Norton in 1985. On October 15, 1988, she married John Becker, Lenora, KS. Together they shared thirty-two years of marriage and raised five children: Annette Becker, Denton, TX; Timothy Becker, Layton, UT; Phillip Becker, El Paso, TX; Melinda Becker and spouse Henry Chapman, Kansas City, KS; and Eric Becker, Denton, TX.

Ann was a dedicated wife, caring parent, and engaged community member. She poured time and energy into a variety of activities and local organizations: teaching confirmation classes and making meals for new parents and events at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, volunteering with the Busy Jayhawkers 4-H Club, and supporting and attending innumerable Norton Public School events, among many other activities. Professionally, in Norton, she worked at the Norton State Hospital, Eisenhower Elementary School, and Valley Hope, as well as supporting John’s farming and ranching. At home, she made cozy patchwork quilts, took long walks, cooked comforting food, read books from the Norton Public Library, and drafted handwritten letters every day to her children, family, and friends. She is best remembered for her can-do attitude and taking delight in the little things.

Ann is survived by her loving husband and five children, as well as her siblings Harley Yeisley, Marion, IA; Rebecca Wetter and spouse Clarence, Norton, KS; and Walter Yeisley and spouse Karen, Varnville, SC. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am Thursday, April 8, 2021 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Norton. Burial will follow at the Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be held 3-7:00 pm Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, Norton. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm. KANSAS CITY (AP) — Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt said his office has sued four massage businesses including one in Kansas City that he contends solicit prostitution.

Schmitt said he is suing A Little Massage in Laclede County, Blue Lotus Asian Massage in Cole County, Shangri-La Massage in Jackson County and Ella’s Asian Massage in Clay County.

His office is seeking injunctions to close the locations, which Schmitt said violate public nuisance laws. He contends the businesses advertise on websites that solicit prostitution and two of them have reviews on message boards that describe sex acts provided at the businesses.

The attorney general said landlords at the businesses either did not respond to contacts from his office or were uncooperative.

The lawsuits are part of Schmitt’s Hope Initiative, which he launched in October, to crack down on illicit massage parlors in Missouri.

“With these filings, we’re sending a clear message to (human) traffickers: you are not welcome in the state of Missouri and you will not be able to hide with impunity any longer – we are coming for you,” he said

Attorney General sues massage business in Kansas City

Lawrence A. “Larry” Dreiling, 65, Catharine, died Monday, April 5, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born September 17, 1955, in Hays,
 the son of Lawrence J. “Larry” and Norma Jean (Urban) Dreiling.&nbsp; In 
1973, he graduated from Hays High School.&nbsp; He was an oilfield pumper, 
owning and operating Larry Dreiling Pumping, and he invented and 
designed gauge sticks for oilfield tanks.&nbsp; On November 11, 1977, he was 
united in marriage to Glady J. Dorzweiler in Catharine, and they 
celebrated 20 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on 
October 24, 1997.&nbsp; On December 26, 2003, he was united in marriage to 
Anita (Kinderknecht) Fisher, and they celebrated 17 years of marriage.&nbsp; 
His memberships include St. Catherine Catholic Church, St. Catherine 
Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #11687, where he was Past Grand
 Knight, and the Bishop Cunningham Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of 
Columbus, where he was Past Faithful Navigator.&nbsp; He was an entrepreneur,
 a jack-of-all-trades, enjoyed woodworking, and he would easily manage 
multiple projects simultaneously.&nbsp; Larry was very welcoming, caring, and
 possessed a wonderful smile, knew people wherever he traveled, had an 
exceptional memory, and loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Anita of 
Catharine, his father and mother-in-law: Leo and Viola Dorzweiler of 
Catharine, two sons: Matt Dreiling and wife Renee of Hays &nbsp;and Adam 
Fisher and wife Erica of Hays, five daughters: Joannie Kollman and 
husband Andy of Catharine, Shannon Dreiling and significant other Andrew
 Burkhart of Hays, Angie Dorzweiler and husband Steve of Salina, Laura 
Waldschmidt and husband Chris of Overland Park, and Paula Mattison and

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Friday, April 9, 2021 at St. Catherine Catholic Church.&nbsp; 
Burial will follow in St. Catherine Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 
3:00 pm until 8:00 on Thursday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and 
from 8:30 am until service time on Friday at the church.&nbsp; The Fourth 
Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5:30 pm until 
6:30, a vigil service will be at 6:30 pm, followed by a combined Third 
and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary, all on Thursday at the 
funeral home.&nbsp; 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hospice of
 HaysMed, St. Catherine Cemetery Fund, or to the Harold Dorzweiler

 </figure>Lawrence A. “Larry” Dreiling, 65, Catharine, died Monday, April 5, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family.He was born September 17, 1955, in Hays,
 the son of Lawrence J. “Larry” and Norma Jean (Urban) Dreiling.&nbsp; In 
1973, he graduated from Hays High School.&nbsp; He was an oilfield pumper, 
owning and operating Larry Dreiling Pumping, and he invented and 
designed gauge sticks for oilfield tanks.&nbsp; On November 11, 1977, he was 
united in marriage to Glady J. Dorzweiler in Catharine, and they 
celebrated 20 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on 
October 24, 1997.&nbsp; On December 26, 2003, he was united in marriage to 
Anita (Kinderknecht) Fisher, and they celebrated 17 years of marriage.&nbsp; 
His memberships include St. Catherine Catholic Church, St. Catherine 
Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #11687, where he was Past Grand
 Knight, and the Bishop Cunningham Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of 
Columbus, where he was Past Faithful Navigator.&nbsp; He was an entrepreneur,
 a jack-of-all-trades, enjoyed woodworking, and he would easily manage 
multiple projects simultaneously.&nbsp; Larry was very welcoming, caring, and
 possessed a wonderful smile, knew people wherever he traveled, had an 
exceptional memory, and loved his family, especially his grandchildren.Survivors include his wife Anita of 
Catharine, his father and mother-in-law: Leo and Viola Dorzweiler of 
Catharine, two sons: Matt Dreiling and wife Renee of Hays &nbsp;and Adam 
Fisher and wife Erica of Hays, five daughters: Joannie Kollman and 
husband Andy of Catharine, Shannon Dreiling and significant other Andrew
 Burkhart of Hays, Angie Dorzweiler and husband Steve of Salina, Laura

Lawrence A. 'Larry' Dreiling

I remember a turkey hunt along the river some years back and the discovery that it led us to.&nbsp; We had hunted along the river west of Inman, and parked near an adjacent alfalfa field. As we crawled into the pickup to leave, my wife pointed toward the treetops along the river and asked “Is there a bird in that nest?” I looked where she pointed, and saw a haphazard collection of twigs or something in the very top of a tall dead Cottonwood. The ensuing conversation went something like this: “No dear that looks like a squirrel’s nest to me.” “I don’t think so,” she replied, “and I’m sure that’s a bird in it.” “Here then,” I said, handing her the binoculars. “See for yourself.” “Just like I thought,” she answered. “That is a bird. It looks like one of those big tall birds we see wading along the river.” “A Blue Heron,” I corrected, “and I don’t think so; not way up there!” I snatched the binoculars from her, and peered at the “squirrels’ nest” high in the tree. Sure enough! Sticking out like a sore thumb in the tallest tree around was a large willy-nilly collection of branches and sticks, and square in the middle of it stood the unmistakable silhouette of a Great Blue Heron, better known as a “crane” to most of us. Now, had “mom heron” not been standing in her nest, the squirrels nest theory would certainly have “flown,” and we’d have never given the spectacle a second glance. When we left, we took the gravel road along the other side of the river, and stopped for another look. We found the nest to be hidden by green trees, but discovered yet a second nest in which we also found an adult heron a few days later. A trip to that spot along the river today revealed 7 heron nests in that tree alone, along with 3 adult herons, and as we drove farther up the road, several more nests could be seen in an adjacent tree.

Great Blue Herons of some subspecies or coloration exist across the entire continental United States and Alaska. For Kansas herons, southern migration to Mexico or South America begins in October where they winter until March. They are very tall, gangly birds with immense wingspans of up to six feet, yet weigh less than ten pounds. Depending upon conditions, a few awkward “steps” may be required to launch them into flight, but once in the air, they move with slow, rhythmic, effortless strokes of those immense wings. Unlike most birds of their stature, they fly with their necks crooked and folded back against their bodies and their heads held upright. They have practically no tail at all, so they also fly with their long legs straight out behind them, acting as rudders to help steer them in flight.&nbsp;

I’m sure we’ve all seen “cranes” fishing in rivers and streams and along the banks of ponds. Although fish, frogs and small snakes make up the vast majority of their diet, they are not above eating insects and small rodents also. Their long, pointed beaks are perfectly designed for stabbing prey, which is always killed and swallowed head first. The enzymes in their digestive system are so strong that most bone matter is completely dissolved.

Great Blue Herons demand isolation in their nesting sites, and are very sensitive to human disturbance. Nests are often found in colonies known as “heronries,” and can be anywhere from treetops like the ones we found, to rocky ledges and crevices on the ground. When satisfied with a nesting site, the birds usually return year after year to enlarge and reuse the same structures whenever possible. Three or four bluish-green eggs are laid and incubated for twenty-eight days by both parents. Research shows that heron chicks are extremely unpleasing to look at until fully feathered, and stay in the nest until they are nearly full-grown.

Great Blue Herons are far form rare, and I remember as a kid learning to know them as “cranes” as we watched them hunt around the edges of the farm pond where my dad took me to fish for bass and bullheads. Your grandparents no doubt knew them as “shitepokes.” Writing this piece showed me how little I really knew about these birds, especially about where they built their nests.
