Carol Jean Wood, 74, of Russell, Kansas, died on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.

Carol was born on October 02, 1947, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of 
John and Marge (Henn) Johnson.&nbsp; She grew up in Hays and graduated from 
Hays High School.&nbsp; After high school she attended Ft. Hays University 
where she met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Gale Ray Wood 
on June 03, 1967, in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; From this union Carol and Gale 
were blessed with two children a son Kelly and daughter Cindy.&nbsp; The 
family lived in several towns in Kansas and eventually moved closer to 
home and moved to Russell in 2000.&nbsp; She was a very artistic person and 
enjoyed working with various crafts, scrap booking photo albums and cake
 decorating.&nbsp; She also enjoyed sewing and making clothes for her 
children and her daughters dolls.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending time
 with her family and especially enjoyed time with her children and 
grandchildren.

Surviving family include her daughter Cindy Jury and husband Rod of 
Russell, Kansas; brothers Tom Johnson and wife Joyce of Hays, Kansas; 
sisters Leigh Mabb and husband Gary of Ellis County, Kansas, Becki 
Johnson of St. Paul, Nebraska and Chris Dietz and husband Perry of Ellis
 County, Kansas; granddaughter Sadie Wood and husband Bobby Elliott of 
Russell, Kansas and great grandchildren Ronan Elliott and Hayden Ruiz.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gale on November 
04, 2020 and son Kelly Ray Wood. Cremation has been selected by the 
family. &nbsp;A memorial service to celebrate Carol’s life will be held at 10
 A.M. on Friday, May 13, 2022, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in 
Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Family will greet guests the day of the service.&nbsp; 
Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the

KANSAS CITY (AP)—A man who killed a couple during a robbery at their rural home more than a quarter of a century ago was put to death Tuesday, becoming just the fifth person executed in the United States this year.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/executions-sentencing-missouri-8b1099a050b86c4a98c6fd0da5e0e3ed">Carman Deck</a>, 56, died by injection at the state prison in Bonne Terre. He was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m. His fate was sealed a day earlier when neither the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-supreme-court-executions-missouri-4d6d9cf622713c2f79a8d577ccb13520">U.S. Supreme Court</a>&nbsp;nor Republican Gov. Mike Parson stepped in to halt the execution. Deck’s death sentence was overturned three times before for procedural issues.

Deck mouthed a few inaudible words as the 5 grams of pentobarbital were administered, then puffed out a couple of breaths before all movement stopped, the process lasting just a few seconds.

“My hope is that one day the world will find peace and that we all will learn to be kind and loving to one another,” Deck said in a written final statement. “We all are a part of this journey through life, connected in every way. Please give love, show love, BE LOVE!”

Parson, in a statement, said the couple killed, James and Zelma Long, “were innocent victims of Carman Deck’s heinous violence. Tonight, justice was served.”

Court records show that Deck, of the St. Louis area, was a friend of the grandson of the Longs, who lived in De Soto, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) southwest of St. Louis. He knew the couple, in their late 60s, kept a safe in their home.

In July 1996, Deck and his sister stopped at the home under the guise of asking directions. Deck wasn’t surprised the couple let them in.

“They’re country folks,” Deck told a detective, according to court records. “They always do.”

Once inside, Deck pulled a gun from his waistband. At Deck’s command, Zelma Long opened the safe and removed jewelry, then got $200 from her purse and more money hidden in a canister.

Deck ordered the couple to lie on their stomachs on their bed. Court records said Deck stood there for 10 minutes deciding what to do, then shot James Long twice in the head before doing the same thing to Zelma Long.

A tip alerted police to Deck, and he was arrested later that night outside his sister’s apartment building in St. Louis County. The decorative tin canister from the Long home was on the floorboard of his car.

Prosecutors said Deck later gave a full account of the killings in oral, written and audiotaped statements. He was sentenced to death in 1998, but the Missouri Supreme Court tossed the sentence due to errors by Deck’s trial lawyer.

The U.S. Supreme Court threw out his second sentence in 2005, citing the prejudice caused by Deck being shackled in front of the sentencing jury.

He was sentenced to death for a third time in 2008.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/59b0d23c85d04ed7b8374ce433393748">Nine years later</a>, U.S. District Judge Catherine Perry determined that “substantial” evidence arguing against the death penalty in Deck’s first two penalty phases was unavailable for the third because witnesses had died, couldn’t be found or declined to cooperate.

In October 2020, a three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals restored the death penalty, ruling that Deck should have raised his concern first in state court, not federal court. Appeals of that ruling were unsuccessful.

The clemency petition on behalf of Deck cited abuse he suffered as a child, including beatings that left welts and sexual abuse. It said he and his siblings often were left alone without food. Deck's attorney, Elizabeth Unger Carlyle, said in a statement that Deck also was raped while in prison for theft at age 19.

“This experience transformed him from a non-violent thief into the person who committed two terrible murders,” Carlyle said. She called his execution “unjust and immoral.”

JEFFERSON CITY—On Monday, Governor Mike Parson confirmed that the State of Missouri will carry out the sentence of 56-year-old Carmen Deck on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, as ordered by the Supreme Court of Missouri, according to a statement from Parson's office.

"Mr. Deck has received due process, and three separate juries of his peers have recommended sentences of death for the brutal murders he committed,"&nbsp;Governor Parson&nbsp;said. "The State of Missouri will carry out Mr. Deck's sentence according to the Court's order and&nbsp;deliver justice."

Deck was tried and convicted for the heinous execution-style murders of two innocent elderly victims during a robbery in 1996. Mr. Deck fully admitted to his callous offenses in verbal, written, and recorded statements to law enforcement.

Court records said Deck and his sister went to the Long home under the guise of asking for directions, but with the intent to rob them. Deck pulled a pistol from his waistband and ordered them to lie facedown on their bed. He shot them in the head.

 In three different proceedings, separate juries have recommended Mr. Deck’s death sentences. Deck's case has been reviewed in the state trial court, Missouri Supreme Court, federal district court, Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, and United States Supreme Court.

Execution: Convicted killer put to death for 1996 murder of couple

Federal sentencing for Tyler Gillum, the former owner of the Plainville Livestock Commission, is set for July 21.

This is the end of a story that has spanned seven years, saw ranchers stretched to their financial limits, banks defrauded of millions of dollars and the demise of a rural bank.

Despite the trail of economic turmoil left behind in this case, the local community is seeking a comeback.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/85498496-95af-4704-8e67-6ed8943abcf9">Gillum, the former owner of the Plainville Livestock Commission, was convicted in U.S. District Court on April 22 on 31 counts of bank fraud, one count of making a false statement in connection with a Small Business Administration guaranteed loan, and one count of making a false statement in a loan or credit card application. </a>

Gillum, 51, of Plainville owned
and operated Plainville Livestock Commission Inc. from 2006 until 2019. 

Between January 2015 and August 2017, Gillum wrote checks and made wire transfers between various accounts under his control at various banks in a scheme commonly known as check kiting, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

This is when checks are continually written back and forth to fraudulently inflate account balances tricking banks into honoring checks written with insufficient funds. Gillum’s scheme resulted in losses of more than $10 million to the banking system, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

Bank officials stepped in February 2019. Almena Bank froze the Gillum's accounts, including a custodial account, which was supposed to hold money due to ranchers who sold cattle at Gillum's livestock auctions.

Money that was supposed to be set aside to pay cattle sellers was transferred from a custodial account to the Plainville Livestock Auction’s operating account. The Almena Bank froze both accounts, which resulted in bounced checks.

Ranchers who were due more than $900,000 in auction proceeds had to wait more than 10 months to receive payment for their cattle.

On March 28, 2019, Almena Bank of 
Almena stipulated to a consent order with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to correct what court
 records called “unsafe and unsound banking practices and violations of 
laws and regulations.”

In October 2020, Almena Bank failed. "The $69 million-asset bank was closed by its state regulator, then sold by the FDIC&nbsp; to Equity Bank in Andover," according to a story in the American Banker on March 26, 2021.

The American Banker quoted an FDIC report on the closure, which said, “The board’s performance and management were considered to be critically deficient.”

The FDIC report did not specify the Gillum case as a factor in the bank's closure; however, it said  [Bank Chairman Shad] Chandler led "an aggressive growth strategy that involved using higher-cost wholesale funds to back a push into large Small Business Administration and Department of Agriculture loans."

According to the American Banker story, Almena Bank's failure cost the FDIC’s Deposit Insurance Fund $18 million.

In May 2019, a grand jury returned a federal indictment against Tyler Gillum and his wife, Camden. Charges against Camden were later dropped.

The assets of the Plainville Livestock Commission were auctioned in June 2019. Court records indicated $14.5 million was owed at the time of the sale. The sale came up far short of the money owed.

According to a report from the court trustee, the total gross from the auction of the personal property and equipment from the bankruptcy auction was $405,682.</a>

At the time of those payments, Derek Stockman, a rancher, said he had to restructure his loans as he
 waited for payment in the case and lost about $2,000 in interest as his
 payment from the Feb. 5 auction was being held by the courts.

"It
 added a lot of financial stress ... and tension with the bankers and 
stuff like that," he said at that time. "I didn’t expect that we would get it all."

The Plainville Livestock Commission bankruptcy and the related delay of payments to ranchers, not only affected those ranchers who were due money, but had a trickle-down effect on the entire community. 

<a href="https://www.hayspost.com/2019/04/15/cattlemen-affected-by-plainville-bankruptcy-likely-in-for-long-wait-2/">Roger McEowen, a Washburn law professor, spoke to cattlemen following the Gillum bankruptcy</a>
 and noted there is a multiplier of three to four times in the community
 associated with this agriculture revenue. With almost $1 million owed 
to producers, that equaled $3 million to $4 million that had been taken 
out of circulation in the local economy.

<a href="https://archive.hayspost.com/2019/04/22/plainville-economy-trying-to-recover-after-two-bankruptcies-in-a-month/">Roger Hrabe, director of the Rooks County Economic Development, acknowledged 2019 was a rough year for the community. In addition to the Plainville Livestock Commission closing, Chuck Comeau and his Dessin Fournir furniture company also declared bankruptcy within a month of the Plainville Livestock Commission closure.</a>

However, Hrabe said Plainville is rebounding.

Several of the companies owned by Chuck Comeau's Dessin Fournir have been purchased and reopened.

<a href="https://www.hrstockyards.com/">The livestock auction is now being operated by Heartland Regional Stockyards owned by Lloyd and Judy Schneider. </a>

Hrabe said the new owners of the stockyards, as well as the former Dessin Fournir companies, have all expanded since they were purchased by their new owners.

A co-working space, boutique and mortgage company have all opened in downtown Plainville in the last year. A new child care center and preschool are coming to the community, and a feasibility study is in the works for a new senior care facility.

"We have downtown Plainville Inc. that is made up of some very energetic people, and they are doing some good things," Hrabe said. "They have some building renovations too that ultimately lead to something good down there."

Unemployment rates in Rooks County remain very low — in the 2.5 percent range. There are more local job listings than Hrabe has seen in years.

Hays Post attempted to contact Gillum's defense attorney for a comment on the conviction. Hays Post also asked if Gillum intends to appeal the conviction, but a call was not returned.

Hays Post reached out to the attorneys for Equity Bank, which bought Almena Bank. No one returned a phone call. Hays Post also reached out to representatives of Landmark Bank and TBK Bank, who were also listed in the case. No one returned phone calls.

Gillum leaves legacy of economic downfall; Plainville on rebound

Marvin&nbsp;Ray Nimz&nbsp;was born on October 22, 1929, in Ransom, Kansas, the son of Wilhelm&nbsp;and Celia (Rufenacht) Nimz. He passed away&nbsp;Monday, May 2,&nbsp;2022,&nbsp;at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital.&nbsp;He was 92 years old.

Marvin grew up in&nbsp;Trego County, attended local schools and graduated from Trego Community High School with&nbsp;the class of 1947.&nbsp;On July 17, 1952, Marvin was united in marriage to Frances (Richmeier) Nimz.

Marvin was a farmer&nbsp;and&nbsp;enjoyed playing cards, woodworking, jigsaw puzzles and gardening.

Marvin will be dearly missed.&nbsp;Surviving family include his wife Frances of 69 years;&nbsp;sons&nbsp;Daryl Nimz of Ottawa,&nbsp;Kansas,&nbsp;Mark (Joleen) Nimz&nbsp;of WaKeeney Kansas,&nbsp;Kevin&nbsp;(Sandy) Nimz&nbsp;of Salina, Kansas,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Larry (Lindy) Nimz of Littleton,&nbsp;Colorado;&nbsp;daughter Jill (Bob) Hemenway of McPherson,&nbsp;Kansas;&nbsp;11 grandchildren;&nbsp;12&nbsp;great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and&nbsp;sister Marjorie Cotton of Hoisington, Kansas; He was preceded in death by his parents;&nbsp;3&nbsp;brothers&nbsp;Fred,&nbsp;Leroy and Willie Nimz;&nbsp;2 sisters Emma Moody and Celia Nimz;&nbsp;and daughter-in-law Barb Nimz.

Dyanna Kay Wilson, 58, died May 1, 2022, at her home in Hoisington.&nbsp; 
She was born October 23, 1963, the daughter of Gary and Linda (Woodard) 
Wilson.

Dyanna was a member of First Street Church of God, Hoisington, 
Kansas. Dyanna was a motorcycle enthusiast who also loved to play pool 
and crochet.

Survivors include; sons, Dallas Schwab and fiance Stacie of Lone Oak,
 Texas, and Dylan Wilson of Greenville, Texas; father, Gary Wilson and 
wife Shirley of St. Joseph, Missouri; siblings, Terese Wilson, Darlene 
Case, Ross Tuey, Tammy Piland and husband Scotty, Chris Kelso and wife 
Shannon, and Ricky Ray, all of Great Bend; Brian and Brad Brumm of St. 
Joseph, Missouri, Joe Ray of Chase; Roxie Bowman of Stewartsville,

Dyanna Kay Wilson

James "Jim" Francis Underwood age 86 went home to be with his Lord on February 23, 2022.  Jim was born on August 25, 1936, in Milwaukee, OR. to the late Burchie and Ruby (Rhoades) Underwood. In 1938, his family moved back to Norton and this is where Jim made his home. While a senior in high school Jim joined the Army Reserves.  After high school he worked on the paint and garden crew for the State Sanatorium.  He then went to Fort Carson Colorado for two weeks of boot camp after which he joined the Navy.  He took his basics at the Great Lakes in Chicago.  In the latter part of 1957, he went to work for his dad Burchie at the Underwood Conoco station in Norton.  On October 11, 1958, he married Wenda L. Taylor.  They have 3 daughters.  Patty, Theresa and Connie. In 1973, after his dad Burchie retired Jim took over the Underwood Conoco station.  After 50 years, Jim retired from the station.  The Underwood Conoco station was the last full-service station in downtown Norton. 

Jim was active with the Norton Jaycees.  He was the director in 1971 and won the Gold Key Man’s award.  He was the Jaycees girls’ softball director and coached his daughters’ teams for many years. Jim was on a couple of bowling teams one of them being the Underwood Conoco Team.  He was a member of the Norton Squarenaders beginning in 1972 and serving as Vice President and President of the club. Jim was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He belonged to the Eagles, American Legion, ABC Bowling Association and the Conoco Inc. Dealers Association. Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Jim will be remembered for his love of his family, his customers and friends who traded with him at the station and his love of the outdoors. This note was found in his billford.  The kiss of the sun for pardon.  The song of the bird for mirth. One is nearer God’s heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth.  The garden was Jim’s happy place.  Jim loved his hometown of Norton Kansas.  Ask Jim anything that had to do with Norton and he could tell you the history and who was related to who in Norton. He was a walking history book of Norton Kansas. 

Survivors include three daughters Patty Fitzmaurice and her husband Rev. David Fitzmaurice, Belgrade MO., Theresa Underwood Palo, KS., and Connie Ellis and husband Glen Ellis Lenora KS. Four grandchildren Joshua Fitzmaurice Bend OR., Silas Fitzmaurice Chesterfield MO., William Seven Jones Denver CO., and James Jones Palo, KS.  One sister Bonnie (Underwood) and husband Dr. William Lathrop Lawrence KS., and one brother Jerry and Sybil Underwood Leawood, KS: eight great grandchildren: other relatives and his many friends. 

He was preceded in death by his wife Wenda Underwood and his parents Burchie and Ruby Underwood.

Cremation was chosen.  A graveside service will be held Monday, May 9, at 1:00 p.m. in the Norton Cemetery with Rev. David Fitzmaurice officiating.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris tested negative on Monday for COVID-19, six days after she tested positive for the virus, and has been cleared to return to the White House on Tuesday.

Harris press secretary Kirsten Allen said Harris, who was prescribed the antiviral treatment Paxlovid last week, was negative on a rapid antigen test. Allen said Harris would continue to wear a “well-fitting mask while around others” in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines until through her tenth day after her positive test.

CDC guidance allows people to leave isolation on the sixth day after they tested positive, as long as they wear a mask around others. The White House exceeds those guidelines, requiring a negative rapid test before people who have been infected are allowed to return to the complex.

Vice President negative for COVID-19 after taking antiviral pill

Mary Jane Carlton Smith, age 96, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on&nbsp;April 28, 2022, at the Wallace County Care Center in Sharon Springs, KS.

Mary was born on Dece<a></a>mber 2, 1925, in Beloit, KS to Rev. A.L. and Laura (Lewis) Carlton. She was the youngest of nine children. Her father was a Methodist minister which took the family to Beloit, Norton and Goodland before settling in Jennings, KS. Mary graduated from Jennings Community High School in 1943. She attended college at Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln, NE from 1943-1946. During these years, she performed in many plays and traveled with a theater&nbsp;troupe.&nbsp;Mary married Darwin L. Smith on June 9, 1946 in Jennings, KS.

Since 1950, Darwin and Mary made their home in Sharon Springs, KS. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. In 1963 she added a career to her life when she went to work for the Sharon Springs school system. She worked&nbsp;in the&nbsp;office and then became the board clerk. She worked at the school until her retirement in 1991.&nbsp;

Mary’s memberships included the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church, the Methodist Women, the Sharon Springs Music Club, and the Wallace County Senior Center. She also served as the Sunday School Superintendent for many years, sang in the church choir, directed a children’s choir,&nbsp;and sang for many funerals and weddings.&nbsp;Mary and Darwin participated in several Lay Witness Missions through the church. Talking to others about her faith and&nbsp;her&nbsp;walk with Jesus was one of her favorite things to do.

Mary and Darwin were blessed with six children; Lois, Ellen, Sarah, Lora, Emily, and Lewis. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, Granny, and of course the best title she had, Great Granny. She took pride in her family making a home for them. She and Darwin always welcomed their friends and their children’s friends into their home.&nbsp;

She&nbsp;is preceded in death by her&nbsp;loving&nbsp;husband, Darwin,&nbsp;on October 14, 2004, her son-in-law Alan Roop,&nbsp;and grandson Garth Roop.&nbsp;She was also preceded in death by her parents;&nbsp;four brothers,&nbsp;Arlyn, Rev. Lawrence, Glen, and James Carlton; four sisters,&nbsp;Zelfa&nbsp;Neill,&nbsp;Harriett Casey, Naomi Carter, and Rachel Carter.&nbsp;

Mary is survived by Lois Pearce and her husband Bryan of Wallace, Ellen Roop of Lakewood CO, Sarah Alt and her husband Doug of Salina, Lora Rochholz and her husband David of Minot, North Dakota, Emily Bolen and her husband Bruce of Sharon Springs, and Lewis&nbsp;Smith and his wife Susan of Phillipsburg, 15 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren,&nbsp;and many nieces, nephews, and friends.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Sharon Springs.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022, at 10:00 AM MT at the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church with Pastor Galen Crippen and Reverend Paul McNall officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Sharon Springs Cemetery.

Mary Jane Carlton Smith

Jacob "Jake" Zimmerman&nbsp;passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26. 2022, at the Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care in Quinter, KS. He was born on January 14,&nbsp;1918,&nbsp;on a farm in rural Grainfield, KS&nbsp;to the&nbsp;late George and Theresia (Lovenstein) Zimmerman.&nbsp;He was the second oldest in the family of six daughters and two sons.&nbsp;He attended school in Grainfield through part of the seventh grade.&nbsp;He worked on the family farm, for neighbors and the Conn Hogan family in Colorado for a couple&nbsp;of years.

Jake served in the U.S. Army, 7th&nbsp;Infantry Division, 17th&nbsp;Regiment, H Company from March of 1941 through October 1945.&nbsp;He served as a heavy machine-gunner in the Pacific Theater Campaigns in the Aleutian Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Philippines and the 82-day battle for the Rkukyus Islands of Okinawa, Japan.&nbsp;He was awarded&nbsp;a Bronze Star, two Bronze Service Stars and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal.&nbsp;Sgt. Zimmerman was discharged at Ft. Logan, CO and returned to Grainfield in October of 1945.

On April 15,&nbsp;1947,&nbsp;he was united in marriage to Helen (Pfeifer) Zimmerman at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, St. Peter, KS.&nbsp;To this union five sons were born.&nbsp;They enjoyed 66 years of marriage.

Jake was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Park, when he was younger and then a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Grainfield.&nbsp;He was a member of the Grainfield Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign War, Post #2864,&nbsp;Grinnell,&nbsp;and the American Legion Post #301, Grainfield.&nbsp;He was a faithful Legion stag/stagette worker and served on the military funeral detail.

He enjoyed farming on the family farm southeast of Grainfield until retiring and moving into Grainfield in 1980. He enjoyed watching the crops grow and raised wheat, sorghum, barley, oats, soybeans, feed,&nbsp;cattle,&nbsp;and chickens.

Jake enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren coming to visit him.&nbsp;He was honored with a 100th&nbsp;Birthday party and special program honoring his years of service during WWII on January 14,&nbsp;2018,&nbsp;with&nbsp;many relatives and friends in attendance.&nbsp;He enjoyed the day immensely and loved all the gifts and cards filled with well wishes.&nbsp;Jake enjoyed living in this own home through the assistance of his family providing daily meals and night supervision until his move into the&nbsp;Long-Term&nbsp;Care Facility in April of 2021.

Jake will be dearly missed by many friends and family including his five sons: Darold (Beverly) Grainfield, Elmer (the late Yvonne), Hoxie, Melvern (Darlene) Grainfield, Ronald (Jo Ann) Grainfield and Reuben (Dighton).&nbsp;Eighteen grandchildren and&nbsp;thirty-one&nbsp;great grandchildren.&nbsp;Two sisters; (JoAnn Engel), Oakley and Magdalena (Mactie) WaKeeney.

Those preceding him in death were his parents (George and Theresia) and brother, Joseph (Joe) and sister-in-law (Pauline) Zimmerman; sisters&nbsp;and&nbsp;brother-in-laws: Raymond and (Margaret) Deges,&nbsp;Nicklaus and (Frances) Zerr,&nbsp;Henry Engel,&nbsp;Dominic (Victoria) Zerr and Valentine and (Anna Mary) Heier and George Uhrich.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Sunday, May 1, 2022, at St. Agnes Education Center, with vigil and rosary to follow.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, May&nbsp;2, 2022, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Father Mitchel Zimmerman and Father James Thomas as&nbsp;concelebrants.

Logan, CO and returned to Grainfield in October of 1945.On April 15,&nbsp;1947,&nbsp;he was united in marriage to Helen (Pfeifer) Zimmerman at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, St. Peter, KS.&nbsp;To this union five sons were born.&nbsp;They enjoyed 66 years of marriage.Jake was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Park, when he was younger and then a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Grainfield.&nbsp;He was a member of the Grainfield Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign War, Post #2864,&nbsp;Grinnell,&nbsp;and the American Legion Post #301, Grainfield.&nbsp;He was a faithful Legion stag/stagette worker and served on the military funeral detail.He enjoyed farming on the family farm southeast of Grainfield until retiring and moving into Grainfield in 1980. He enjoyed watching the crops grow and raised wheat, sorghum, barley, oats, soybeans, feed,&nbsp;cattle,&nbsp;and chickens.Jake enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren coming to visit him.&nbsp;He was honored with a 100th&nbsp;Birthday party and special program honoring his years of service during WWII on January 14,&nbsp;2018,&nbsp;with&nbsp;many relatives and friends in attendance.&nbsp;He enjoyed the day immensely and loved all the gifts and cards filled with well wishes.&nbsp;Jake enjoyed living in this own home through the assistance of his family providing daily meals and night supervision until his move into the&nbsp;Long-Term&nbsp;Care Facility in April of 2021.Jake will be dearly missed by many friends and family including his five sons: Darold (Beverly) Grainfield, Elmer (the late Yvonne), Hoxie, Melvern (Darlene) Grainfield, Ronald (Jo Ann) Grainfield and Reuben (Dighton).&nbsp;Eighteen grandchildren and&nbsp;thirty-one&nbsp;great grandchildren.&nbsp;Two sisters; (JoAnn Engel), Oakley and Magdalena (Mactie) WaKeeney.Those preceding him in death were his parents (George and Theresia) and brother, Joseph (Joe) and sister-in-law (Pauline) Zimmerman; sisters&nbsp;and&nbsp;brother-in-laws: Raymond and (Margaret) Deges,&nbsp;Nicklaus and (Frances) Zerr,&nbsp;Henry Engel,&nbsp;Dominic (Victoria) Zerr and Valentine and (Anna Mary) Heier and George Uhrich.Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Sunday, May 1, 2022, at St. Agnes Education Center, with vigil and rosary to follow.Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, May&nbsp;2, 2022, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Father Mitchel Zimmerman and Father James Thomas as&nbsp;concelebrants.Memorial contributions are suggested to Masses, St. Agnes Catholic Church, or Grainfield American Legion. Alice K. (Meis) Sander, 70, died Monday, April 11, 2022, surrounded by her family at her home in Murdock, KS, after fighting cancer for 6 months like a warrior, while maintaining dignity and grace throughout her courageous battle.

She was born November 18, 1951, in Hays, KS, the daughter of Gilbert and Velma (Eidson) Meis. She graduated from Hays High School in 1969. On October 19, 1974, she married Alvin B. “Brad” Sander in Kinsley, KS. She was a longtime resident of Victoria, KS before moving to Kingman, KS.&nbsp;

Alice loved quilting, sitting on her porch swing, cooking for her family and friends, traveling with her husband, spending time with her grandchildren and beloved bulldogs, and sending cards to those she loved. She was an avid sports fan and a loyal fan of her beloved Kansas Jayhawks. She always put others before herself.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband Brad; two daughters Shannon Sander of Hays, KS and Mandi Stephenson of Cheney, KS; two grandchildren Connor Stephenson and Madilyn Stephenson; bulldogs Gertie and Roxie; brother Gilbert “Bill” Meis and wife Betty of Hays, KS; sisters Joan Schoendaller and husband Leonard of Colorado Springs, CO, Shari Dreiling and husband Alex of Hays, KS; sisters-in-law Gladys Swindler, Patty Billinger, Sandra Sander-Crawford; brother-in-law Darrell Sander, and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Alice K. (Meis) Sander

Charles A. "Bud" Romey, 87, of Kansas City, Missouri, died April 25, 
2022. He was born October 30, 1934, in Hays, Kansas. After graduation 
from Dighton High School, Bud moved to Kansas City where he worked for 
the Union Pacific Railroad Company. He married Mildred J. Nick on 
January 12, 1957. Shortly after their marriage Bud was drafted into the 
Army where he served in Verdun, France, for two years. Mildred joined 
him and they enjoyed touring Europe during the time Bud was stationed 
overseas. Their first daughter was born while they were stationed in 
France.

The couple returned to Kansas City where Bud started his 
own business, Romey Electric Company, with the help of his wife, 
Mildred. They had four sons and another daughter over the next 15 years.
 The couple co-founded Romey Enterprises, Inc., in 1967, which Bud ran 
until he retired in 2021 and turned the business over to his children. 

In
 1976 the family moved to a farm in Trimble, Missouri. For 26 years they
 lived on their farm until all the children were grown and they returned
 to Kansas City. During those years, Bud grew his business, at one time 
owning and operating five branches of his store, The Lighting Center.

Bud
 earned a pilot’s license and enjoyed traveling to hunt and fish. He 
also enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and abroad with his family 
and later, after retiring, with his wife, Mildred, and occasionally with
 his grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Kansas City from 1959-1976 and again from 2002-2014.

Bud
 is survived by his six children: Linda Romey, OSB, Erie, Pennsylvania, 
Steven Romey (Kathy), Kansas City, Richard Romey (Debbie), Leawood, Gary
 Romey (Kasumi), Sandy, Utah, Cindy Romey (Eric Barroso), Kansas City, 
Robert Romey, Kansas City; nine grandchildren, Josh (Holly), Zach 
(Ciera), Nicholas, William, Alana, Kaylin, Sho, Koichi, and Kaito and 
five great-grandchildren, Kael, Kameron, Kennedi, Kassius, and Kruz. He 
also leaves one brother, Larry, three sisters-in-law, Rosalie Kelly, 
Elizabeth Nick Stafford, and Rita (Mike) Crubel, and two 
brothers-in-law, William Nick, CSC, and Joseph (Elaine) Nick, and many 
nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by Mildred, his 
loving wife of 57 years, in 2014, and his parents Adolph and Beatrice 
(Brull) Romey, and brothers, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

 Saturday, April 30, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Parish, 
Kansas City, Missouri, Rosary at 10:45 a.m. followed by Mass of 
Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial following at Resurrection

Charles A. 'Bud' Romey

Austin James Heier was born on December 7th, 1994, to Ron and Nancy Heier. He passed away April 21st, 2022. 
Austin grew up in Wisconsin and Kansas graduating from Quinter High 
School in 2013. After high school Austin proudly served his country in 
the United States Army for five years. During his time with the military
 he earned many accolades, spent time deployed to South Korea, and made 
lasting friendships. After returning from the Army, Austin enjoyed 
seeing the country through the windshield of a semi. He spoke of the 
many beautiful sites he’d seen and people he met along the way. 
The absolute light of Austin’s life was born on October 1st, 2013, in 
the form of a little girl named Harper. Austin grew to be an amazing and
 caring father, always going above and beyond to make sure Harper was 
taken care of and spoiled. More than anything, he loved her with his 
entire being and always put her first. They shared a love of Pokémon, 
everything outdoors, and the same orneriness. 
Austin is survived by his father Ron and his wife Melissa of Oakley; 
mother Nancy of Hays; sister Kara her husband Derek, along with their 
children Tyler and Chloe, of Missouri; daughter Harper and her mother

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, the White House announced, underscoring the persistence of the highly contagious virus even as the U.S. eases restrictions in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-covid-business-health-medication-a5adf6c2e7894e479e795b5a6d1aeb84">a bid to return to pre-pandemic normalcy.</a>

Harris press secretary Kirsten Allen said neither President Joe Biden nor first lady Jill Biden was considered a “close contact” of Harris in recent days. Harris had been scheduled to attend Biden’s Tuesday morning Presidential Daily Brief but was not present, the White House said. Because of their travel schedules, the last time Harris saw Biden was Monday, April 18.

The vice president returned on Monday from a weeklong trip to the West Coast.

Harris tested positive on both rapid and PCR tests but “has exhibited no symptoms,” the White House said. She will isolate at her residence but continue to work remotely, and will return to the White House only when she tests negative for the virus.

Harris, 57, received her first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine weeks before taking office and a second dose just days after Inauguration Day in 2021. She received a booster shot in late October and an additional booster on April 1. Fully vaccinated and boosted people have a high degree of protection against serious illness and death from COVID-19, particularly from the most common and highly transmissible omicron variant.

Harris’ diagnosis comes a month after her husband, Doug Emhoff, recovered from the virus, as a wave of cases of the highly transmissible omicron subvariant has spread through Washington’s political class, infecting Cabinet members, White House staffers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/covid-health-oregon-kamala-harris-ron-wyden-4635e36e760f07ca2451d9937ca38005">and lawmakers</a>&nbsp;including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., tested positive on Tuesday, his office said.

Allen said Harris would follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines “and the advice of her physicians.” It was not immediately clear whether she is being prescribed any antiviral treatments.

The White House has put in place strict COVID-19 protocols around the president, vice president and their spouses, including daily testing for those expected to be in close contact with them. Biden is tested regularly on the advice of his physician, the White House has said.

After more than two years and nearly a million deaths in the U.S., the virus is still killing more than 300 people a day in the U.S., according to the CDC. The unvaccinated are at a far greater risk, more than twice as likely to test positive and nine times as likely to die from the virus as those who have received at least a primary dose of the vaccines, according to the public health agency.

Harris’ diagnosis comes as the Biden administration is taking steps to expand availability of the life-saving COVID-19 antiviral treatment Paxlovid, reassuring doctors that there is ample supply for people at high risk of severe illness or death from the virus.

Paxlovid, when administered within five days of symptoms appearing, has been proven to bring about a 90% reduction in hospitalizations and deaths among patients most likely to get severe disease.

In addition to her husband’s diagnosis, Harris was identified as a “close contact” after her communications director tested positive on April 6.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines “close contact” with an infected person as spending 15 minutes or more with them over a 24-hour period. The CDC says a (person with “close contact” does not need to quarantine if they are up to date on their vaccines but should wear a well-fitting mask around other people for 10 days after the contact.

Despite 2nd booster this month, vice president positive for COVID

Paul Anthony Huslig, 87, passed away on April 24, 2022, at Catholic 
Care Center in Bel Aire, Kansas. He was born on October 25, 1934, at 
Great Bend, Kansas to Anton F. &amp; Louise A. (Maneth) Huslig. Paul 
married Berniece C. Schneweis on May 9, 1964, at Great Bend, Kansas. She
 died November 14, 2020.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Paul was an operator technician for 
West Plains Energy. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. 
Patrick Catholic Church, a Third Degree Knight for the Knights of 
Columbus Council #862, a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Coronado 
Assembly member, member of the American Legion and the 13th Engineer 
Association.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula Wierman and husband Tom of 
Wichita and Ruth Huslig of Great Bend; two brothers, Jerome Huslig of 
Ellinwood and Charles Huslig of Ellsworth; a sister, Helen McBurney of 
Kingman; and four grandchildren, Christopher, Molly and Justin Wierman 
and Hope Huslig. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, 
Bernice Huslig; a son, Maurice Huslig; four brothers, Arthur, Marcus, 
Larry and Ervin Huslig; and a sister, Mary Ann Wondra.

Visitation will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. with vigil and 
Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2022, at 
Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 
a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2022, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great 
Bend with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will follow at Great 
Bend Cemetery. 

Memorials have been designated to Holy Family Endowment 
Fund or Brain Tumor Research, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

 </figure>Paul Anthony Huslig, 87, passed away on April 24, 2022, at Catholic 
Care Center in Bel Aire, Kansas. He was born on October 25, 1934, at 
Great Bend, Kansas to Anton F. &amp; Louise A. (Maneth) Huslig. Paul 
married Berniece C. Schneweis on May 9, 1964, at Great Bend, Kansas. She
 died November 14, 2020.A lifetime Great Bend resident, Paul was an operator technician for 
West Plains Energy. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. 
Patrick Catholic Church, a Third Degree Knight for the Knights of 
Columbus Council #862, a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Coronado 
Assembly member, member of the American Legion and the 13th Engineer 
Association.Survivors include two daughters, Paula Wierman and husband Tom of 
Wichita and Ruth Huslig of Great Bend; two brothers, Jerome Huslig of 
Ellinwood and Charles Huslig of Ellsworth; a sister, Helen McBurney of 
Kingman; and four grandchildren, Christopher, Molly and Justin Wierman 
and Hope Huslig. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, 
Bernice Huslig; a son, Maurice Huslig; four brothers, Arthur, Marcus, 
Larry and Ervin Huslig; and a sister, Mary Ann Wondra.Visitation will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. with vigil and 
Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2022, at 
Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 
a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2022, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great 
Bend with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will follow at Great 
Bend Cemetery. Memorials have been designated to Holy Family Endowment 
Fund or Brain Tumor Research, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
