Marthe Therese' Shafer, 87, Salina, passed on to her heavenly home on Tuesday October 11, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Marthe was born on May 2, 1935, in La Rochelle, France to Gottlieb 
and Agnes Misch. At the age of three, World War II swept across Europe, 
and shortly after the path of Marthe’s life would be forever changed. 
Marthe’s parents had immigrated to France from Poland in the 1920’s. Her
 father was unfortunately a victim of the Nazi invasion into France and 
presumed deported to most likely the Dachau concentration camp, never to
 be heard from again.&nbsp; After her father was deported, Marthe’s mother 
suffered an unknown illness causing her to be bed ridden, and she lived 
out the remainder of her short life in a nursing home. Marthe and her 
two older sisters were taken in by a local orphanage, ran by the Sisters
 of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.

Marthe loved to talk about her life in France. As her short-term 
memory faded in the last few years, her memories of her childhood and 
France were more vivid than ever. In 1940, the Germans invaded her 
small, picturesque port town of La Rochelle, which was also the very 
last town liberated in France at the end of the war in 1945. She would 
recount the memory of hearing the Nazi soldiers marching and the sound 
their boots made hitting the ground. They had little food as the German 
army took every bit of sustenance they could, leaving the residents to 
starve. She was most afraid of the dark and being left alone. She 
recalled being terrified as a small child when the sirens would blare 
with incoming air raids. The orphans were taken to shelter in the 
darkness of the cellar until the sirens would subside. When the fighting
 became too severe to remain there, the orphanage was moved about 60 
miles into France, which she recalled as being a welcome change. There 
she discovered her love for nature and having fresh fruit and vegetables
 from the garden they grew. Within a week of leaving La Rochelle, the 
orphanage she was living in was bombed, and when they returned at the 
end of the war, it was a pile of rubble. She also recounted narrowly 
escaping certain death when the Nazi’s came to her orphanage to take 
away all the children of Polish and Jewish heritage. The nuns changed 
her paperwork disguising her name, and she hid in the cellar with her 
two sisters until they left.

At the age of 16, she graduated from the orphanage with the clothes 
on her back, and a small amount of money in her hand. She spent many of 
those first nights scared and alone, sleeping on benches at the park or 
local train station. She eventually found her first job as a live-in 
nanny and housekeeper, giving her a roof over her head, a warm bed, and 
plenty of food.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Marthe met and went on to marry her first husband, James, an American
 soldier stationed in her town, and together they had nine children. At 
the age of 22, she set out on her first big adventure to travel across 
the ocean aboard the Queen Mary, to start a new life in America. Her 
name can be found among the tens of millions of immigrants at Ellis 
Island today.

She knew little English as she settled into her new home, and she 
loved to tell everyone that she learned to speak English from watching 
“I Love Lucy” on television. She lived on numerous military bases around
 the world, including Germany, France, Alabama, Virginia, Maryland, 
Hawaii, Washington, North Carolina, Ft. Riley, and finally Schilling Air
 Force Base in Salina, KS.

Her husband James, passed away after serving two tours in Vietnam, 
and suffering from Agent Orange complications.&nbsp; She met her second 
husband Dale, while working as a housekeeper at the Howard Johnson 
Motel, and together they had two daughters.

Marthe would say the biggest accomplishments in her life were being 
able to travel and see the world and becoming a mother to eleven 
children whom she loved with her whole heart. She lived a simple life, 
never having wealth, but giving generously to anyone in need including 
strangers, and thanking God for being by her side every moment of her 
life. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of 80 descendants at this 
time, and she will be remembered dearly by those of us who knew and 
loved her.

Marthe was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Agnes and 
Alfreda, her husband James Shafer, and her eldest son Dr. James Shafer.

She is survived by her husband, Dale Barras, and her children;&nbsp; 
Beatriz “Betty” Cory (Roger) Corpus Christi, Texas; Steve Shafer, Texas;
 Anthony “Tony” Shafer, Salina; Sylvia Senecal, Salina; Phillip Shafer, 
Kansas City; Francine Climer, Salina; Michael Shafer (Aimee), 
Minneapolis, KS; Robert Shafer, Missouri; Monique Herbel (Kurt), Salina;
 and Claudale Arterburn (Brian), Wichita.&nbsp; Marthe is also survived by 29
 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 15th, 2022, 
at 11:00 a.m. at Ryan Mortuary. The service will also be streamed on 
Facebook Live. Burial will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, October 14th, 2022, from 4 to 7 p.m. with family present from 5 to 7 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Augustine 'Francis' VonFeldt

Troy Harrison&nbsp;Dechant&nbsp;died October 9 at his home in Shawnee, Kansas. Troy, 53, was born in Hays and was the ninth of 10 children of Harry and Berniece (Munsch)&nbsp;Dechant, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Hays High School in 1988. He remained in Hays before moving to Cleveland, Ohio, then Shawnee, where he lived for many years.

Troy had careers in landscape management, car wash operations and union pipefitting, all of which depended on his well-honed mechanical aptitude. He completed with honors the intensive educational program required in union pipefitting and was particularly proud to have earned the top award in a rigorous Dale Carnegie Training course in which he was no doubt the least conventional student. He also started his own business, a deli in Kansas City, in which he put to use the cooking and kitchen management skills acquired as a teenager at the hip of his mother and aunt at the former Hays institution Coachman’s Inn.

In high school and beyond, Troy was the drummer in the local band Broken Promises, which got back together by popular demand to provide the music at several class reunions. His participation in the band began a lifelong love for the art of drumming which he continued until his death. He loved the Kansas Jayhawks, the Kansas City Chiefs, NASCAR, reality adventure TV shows, Volga German food and Harley motorcycles. He had a keen eye for art, often frequenting Kansas City-area shows that supported local artists. He was a spiritual man who strived continuously to maintain favor with the Lord.

He was adored as the “cool uncle” by his 16 nephews and nieces and had a broad circle of lifetime friends whom he held close from childhood onward.

Perhaps the defining moment in Troy’s life was a severe electric shock he suffered at age 21 trying to protect property from a wayward backhoe that had hit an unmarked line. As predicted by medical experts at the time, he suffered ever-intensifying chronic pain the past two decades, which he confronted with his characteristic tenaciousness.

Troy is survived by two brothers: Ron (Roxie)&nbsp;Dechant, Dodge City and Kerry (Karen)&nbsp;Dechant, Aurora, Ohio; and six sisters: Geri Hamilton, El Dorado; Sandy (Dane) Pennington, Superior, Colorado; Michelle (Gary)&nbsp;Pinkall, Great Bend; Brenda&nbsp;Dechant&nbsp;(Becky Benoit), Phoenix; Carla&nbsp;Dechant&nbsp;(Juan Carlos Tobar), Spain; and Kristal&nbsp;Dechant, Victoria. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Cornelius; a nephew Dustin Karst; and a number of close friends.

The visitation will be at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, and from 9 a m. to 9:45 on Monday. &nbsp;Eulogies and personal remembrances will begin at 6:15 p.m., followed by a rosary at 7:15 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., all at the funeral home on Sunday. &nbsp;A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery to follow.

🏐 Kansas Volleyball Association releases week six rankings

Roger Hamilton Brent, formerly of Salina, KS, passed away peacefully 
on the morning of October 9, 2022, at Hawthorn Court of Ahwatukee in 
Phoenix, AZ, at the age of 81.

Roger was born on 
February 4, 1941, in St. Clair, MO to Vern and Esther (Hamilton) Brent. 
Roger was married to Theodora A. “Teddi” Boudrie for 41 years and 
together they raised two 2 children: Dana and Monte.

Roger
 grew up in Alton, KS and graduated from Alton High School in 1959. He 
attended Kansas State University, University of Iowa, and graduated from
 The Dallas Institute of Mortuary Sciences in 1964.

Roger
 dedicated his professional career to helping others through the loss of
 loved ones and his empathetic nature and compassion shined through 
daily. This dedication permitted him to purchase Geisendorf-Rush Smith 
Funeral Home in Salina, KS which he would retire from in 1997.

Roger
 was very active in the community throughout his life including being a 
member of the Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church in Salina, the Acacia 
Fraternity, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Salina Wildcat 
Club, Shriners, and the Kansas Funeral Directors Association.

Roger
 was a committed fan of Kansas State University and was a football 
season ticket holder for more than 40 years. He loved spending time with
 his kids and grandkids, attending their activities, and extended family
 get togethers.

Roger is survived by his children, Dana
 K. (Chris) Gillum of Mesquite, NV and Monte J. (Amy) Brent of Phoenix,

Roger was married to Theodora A. “Teddi” Boudrie for 41 years and

attended Kansas State University, University of Iowa, and graduated from
 The Dallas Institute of Mortuary Sciences in 1964.Roger
 dedicated his professional career to helping others through the loss of
 loved ones and his empathetic nature and compassion shined through 
daily. This dedication permitted him to purchase Geisendorf-Rush Smith 
Funeral Home in Salina, KS which he would retire from in 1997.Roger
 was very active in the community throughout his life including being a 
member of the Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church in Salina, the Acacia 
Fraternity, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Salina Wildcat 
Club, Shriners, and the Kansas Funeral Directors Association.Roger
 was a committed fan of Kansas State University and was a football 
season ticket holder for more than 40 years. He loved spending time with
 his kids and grandkids, attending their activities, and extended family
 get togethers.Roger is survived by his children, Dana

Zelda Mae Marie Darnell, 89, dedicated mother and wife, passed away 
October 10, 2022, at her home in Damar, Kansas. She was born to William 
“Bill” And Emma (Benoit) Darnell in Rural Damar. After Emma’s death, 
Bill married Alma Desbien. Together they had three sons: Bill, Jr., 
Gerald, and Harlan.

Zelda attended the Damar schools. 
When she was seventeen, she met Ernest “Ernie” Darnell at a barn dance 
in 1950. They fell in love and were married December 29, 1950 in the 
family home. To this union six children were born:  Marilyn, Carolyn, 
Larry, Jerry, Shannon, and Shane. Zelda was very proud of her family and
 tended to spoil each and every one of them. She was a master in the 
kitchen from her meals to her treats. All were homemade and created with
 love. Through the years Zelda and Ernie were blessed with 19 
grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren, who they loved and enjoyed 
immensely.

Reading and listening to Elvis were two of 
her favorite activities. She also was a huge Kansas University 
basketball fan and an avid card player. Pitch, pinochle, rummy, and the 
occasional chicken scratch game were frequent pastimes in the Darnell 
household. While the card games were extremely “competitive” between 
Zelda and Ernie, when KU played, they were able to come together for 
their common goals of hating the refs and the opponents, especially 
Duke.

Zelda is preceded in death by her parents; her 
husband Ernie; three sons: Larry, Jerry, and Shane; two granddaughters 
Jolana and Kaitlyn; and her brother Bill. Survivors left to honor and 
cherish her memory are her three daughters:  Marilyn Darnell of Damar, 
Carolyn Terry and husband Tony of Plainville, and Shannon Kibel of 
Bogue; two brothers Gerald Thyfault and wife Cynthia of Hays and Harlan 
Thyfault and wife Jeanie of North Carolina; daughter-in-law Patty 
Darnell of Downs; 17 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

For
 the past 10 years, Zelda and her family were blessed with wonderful and

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A federal judge in St. Louis is weighing the fate of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/student-loan-forgiveness-biden-plan-d9c8e18774a744187c9af634bf4eb728">Biden administration's plan to forgive student loan debt</a>&nbsp;for tens of millions of Americans following a court hearing on Wednesday.

It's unclear when U.S. District Judge Henry Autrey will rule on the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-health-lawsuits-covid-missouri-862d783188de45b698c54b00820d3616">lawsuit filed by six Republican-led states</a>&nbsp;that seeks an injunction to halt the student loan forgiveness plan. Whatever he decides, an appeal is likely.

Democratic President Joe Biden announced in August that his administration would cancel up to $20,000 in education debt for huge numbers of borrowers. The announcement immediately became a major political issue ahead of the November midterms.

The proposal prompted a lawsuit filed in September by Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas and South Carolina. Other lawsuits followed,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-education-lawsuits-personal-taxes-small-948e5c9ee802bc865f66c2ab28328035">including one filed Monday</a>&nbsp;by the Job Creators Network Foundation alleging that the administration violated federal procedures by failing to seek public input on the program.

In the lawsuit brought by the states, a court filing on behalf of the administration said the Department of Education has “broad authority to manage the federal student financial aid programs.” It stated that the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act of 2003, or HEROES Act, allows the secretary of education to waive or modify terms of federal student loans in times of war or national emergency.

“COVID-19 is such an emergency,” the filing stated.

The Congressional Budget Office has said the program will cost about $400 billion over the next three decades. James Campbell, an attorney for the Nebraska attorney general's office, told Autrey that the administration is acting outside its authorities in a way that will costs states millions of dollars.

“What they're trying to do is go around Congress, and this they cannot do,” Campbell said.

The plan would cancel $10,000 in student loan debt for those making less than $125,000 or households with less than $250,000 in income. Pell Grant recipients, who typically demonstrate more financial need, will get an additional $10,000 in debt forgiven.

The administration faced threats of legal challenges to its plans almost immediately. Conservative attorneys, Republican lawmakers and business-oriented groups asserted that Biden was overstepping his authority in taking such sweeping action without the assent of Congress. They called it an unfair government giveaway for relatively affluent people at the expense of taxpayers who didn't pursue higher education.

Meanwhile, many Democratic lawmakers facing tough reelection contests distanced themselves from the student loan plan.

The HEROES Act is a post-Sept. 11, 2001, law meant to help members of the military. The Justice Department says the law allows Biden to reduce or erase student loan debt during a national emergency. Republicans argue the administration is misinterpreting the law because, in part, the pandemic no longer qualifies as a national emergency.

But attorney Brian Netter of the U.S. Department of Justice said the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic is still rippling. He said student loan defaults have skyrocketed over the past two-and-a-half years.

“This (the HEROES Act) is a statute about emergencies — about national emergencies,” Netter said.

The cancellation applies to federal student loans used to attend undergraduate and graduate school, along with Parent Plus loans. Current college students qualify if their loans were disbursed before July 1. Administration officials said applications for debt relief will be available in October.

The plan makes 43 million borrowers eligible for some debt forgiveness, with 20 million who could get their debt erased entirely, according to the administration.

Autrey did not give an indication when he will rule on the injunction request.

KDHE reports 17 additional COVID deaths since October 5

Florence Belle Antholz passed away at the Good Samaritan Society, in 
Atwood, KS, on October 9, 2022, at the age of 89. She was born December 
28, 1932, in Rapid City, SD, to Harold &amp; Elizabeth Haas. 
Florence grew up in a Christian home. The Haas family loved and 
appreciated music. Favorite times were getting around the piano and 
singing with her family, many adventures in the Black Hills with her 
five siblings, helping her father in the Haas Repair Shop and going to 
church. 
When she was ten years old, Florence accepted Jesus as her Lord and 
Savior and always had a deep faith and love for God and His word. 
Florence graduated from Rapid City High School in 1950. After High 
School, she worked and attended North Central Bible College in 
Minneapolis, MN. 
In 1955, Florence moved to Denver to work. There she met Don Antholz. 
They were united in marriage on October 5, 1956, and moved to the family
 farm north of McDonald, KS. Three children were born to this union, 
Robbin, April and Allen. 
Florence was a city girl who became a farm gal. She was a much-loved 
wife, mother, and friend. She enjoyed being a wife, raising her 
children, playing piano, singing, decorating, teaching and attending 
church. Florence taught piano lessons for several years, taught Sunday 
School and helped serve in several other areas at Church. 
After retiring from farming, Florence and Don moved to Atwood, in 2001. 
They were very fortunate to travel together to see much of the United 
States and a few other countries. The trips she most fondly remembered 
were Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. 
Other activities she enjoyed were singing and performing with the 
Prairie Rose Harmony, serving with the Gideons Auxiliary and attending 
Red Hats. Florence is remembered for her flair with fashion, décor and 
was always quick to pray for others. She will be greatly missed by her 
family and friends. 
Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers Clarence, Roger and 
Donald Haas and sisters, Betty Jane Grams and Mary Ellen Dahlberg. 
She is survived by her husband Don; children, Robbin Antholz, Allen 
Antholz and April Rodriguez; grandchildren, Tory Antholz Keller, Brenten
 Antholz, Casey Antholz, Hannah Applequist, Jacob Antholz, Austin 
Antholz, Carissa Antholz, Justin Antholz, Vanessa Thompson, Nick

 </figure>Florence Belle Antholz passed away at the Good Samaritan Society, in 
Atwood, KS, on October 9, 2022, at the age of 89. She was born December 
28, 1932, in Rapid City, SD, to Harold &amp; Elizabeth Haas. 
Florence grew up in a Christian home. The Haas family loved and 
appreciated music. Favorite times were getting around the piano and 
singing with her family, many adventures in the Black Hills with her 
five siblings, helping her father in the Haas Repair Shop and going to 
church. 
When she was ten years old, Florence accepted Jesus as her Lord and 
Savior and always had a deep faith and love for God and His word. 
Florence graduated from Rapid City High School in 1950. After High 
School, she worked and attended North Central Bible College in 
Minneapolis, MN. 
In 1955, Florence moved to Denver to work. There she met Don Antholz. 
They were united in marriage on October 5, 1956, and moved to the family
 farm north of McDonald, KS. Three children were born to this union, 
Robbin, April and Allen. 
Florence was a city girl who became a farm gal. She was a much-loved 
wife, mother, and friend. She enjoyed being a wife, raising her 
children, playing piano, singing, decorating, teaching and attending 
church. Florence taught piano lessons for several years, taught Sunday 
School and helped serve in several other areas at Church. 
After retiring from farming, Florence and Don moved to Atwood, in 2001. 
They were very fortunate to travel together to see much of the United 
States and a few other countries. The trips she most fondly remembered 
were Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. 
Other activities she enjoyed were singing and performing with the 
Prairie Rose Harmony, serving with the Gideons Auxiliary and attending 
Red Hats. Florence is remembered for her flair with fashion, décor and 
was always quick to pray for others. She will be greatly missed by her 
family and friends. 
Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers Clarence, Roger and 
Donald Haas and sisters, Betty Jane Grams and Mary Ellen Dahlberg. 
She is survived by her husband Don; children, Robbin Antholz, Allen 
Antholz and April Rodriguez; grandchildren, Tory Antholz Keller, Brenten
 Antholz, Casey Antholz, Hannah Applequist, Jacob Antholz, Austin 
Antholz, Carissa Antholz, Justin Antholz, Vanessa Thompson, Nick 
Rodriguez and Christy Ketcherside; great grandchildren, Kyle, AuBrey,

Florence Belle Antholz

David Lee Rogers, 76, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2022,&nbsp; at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO from complications of Parkinson’s 
Disease.  His family was by his side with the Chaplain praying over him.
  David was born on April 16, 1946, in Denver, CO.

David
 grew up in Stockton, KS where he made life-long friends and memories, 
graduating from Stockton High School Class of ‘64. He was proud of his 
athletic abilities to set school track records, play baseball and 
football.  Dave furthered his education at Kansas University, Fort Hays 
State, and graduated from Washburn University with a degree in 
Economics. He was also a Certified Baseball Coach.

On 
April 2, 1965, he met Merena Hollingshead at a teen dance in 
Phillipsburg.  After a whirlwind courtship, their love was sealed in 
marriage on September 24, 1965, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in 
Stockton. They recently observed their 57th wedding anniversary.  One of
 Dave’s favorite saying was “the best decision two teenagers ever made”.
  Dave and Merena were blessed with two beautiful baby girls who grew to
 be beautiful ladies. Through the years they lived in Stockton, Lawrence
 and Topeka, KS; Omaha, NE; and Nixa, MO.

Dave never 
met a stranger and loved telling stories of growing up in a small town, 
racing homing pigeons, and playing/coaching baseball.  Most of all, Dave
 treasured spending time with his family.

David was 
preceded in death by his parents Linus and Ellen Rogers, parents-in-law 
Roy and Luella Hollingshead, brothers-in-law Jerry Sterling and Raymond 
Schick.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of the 
home; daughters Shari (Andrew) Cole of Bentonville, AR, and Shani 
Burkhart of Springfield, MO; sisters Patti Sterling of Stockton, KS; 
Loie (Jim) Lewin of Salina, KS; and brother Jim (Lorna) Rogers of

following the burial at El A De Oros Mexican Restaurant in Phillipsburg.

Hospital, who provided healing care to great-grandson Ben, when he was 5

KANSAS CITY (AP)—Las Vegas Raiders receiver Davante Adams has been charged with misdemeanor assault for shoving a photographer to the ground as he left the field following a loss at Kansas City.

Kansas City, Missouri, police said Adams&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/status/1579682203339960320?s=20&amp;t=8JSEJm3A22oY6JFsFe-YxQ">pushed Ryan Zebley to the ground</a>&nbsp;while running off the field following the Raiders' 30-29 loss to the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night. Police called it an “intentional, overt act” that caused whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion.

Charges were filed Wednesday morning in Municipal Court of Kansas City.

Adams apologized in his postgame comments to the media and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/tae15adams/status/1579687398686228480?s=20&amp;t=jZwbBGXeaBWRP2YcD4TL5A">later on Twitter</a>.

“He jumped in front of me coming off the field. I kind of pushed him. He ended up on the ground,” Adams said after the game. “I want to apologize to him for that. That was just frustration mixed with him really just running in front of me.

“I shouldn’t have responded that way, but that’s the way I responded. I want to apologize to him for that.”

The NFL is also investigating Adams' actions. A person familiar with the process told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Adams could face possible punishment, including a fine or suspension.

Raiders coach Josh McDaniels said Tuesday that he supports Adams and will cooperate in any investigation.

Adams had three catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns in the game. He has 29 catches for 414 yards and five TDs so far in his first season with the Raiders.

Now the Food and Drug Administration has given a green light for elementary school-age kids to get the updated booster doses, too -- one made by Pfizer for 5- to 11-year-olds, and a version from rival Moderna for those as young as 6.

There’s one more step before parents can bring their kids in for the new shot: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommends how vaccines are used, must sign off.

These combination or “bivalent” boosters are designed to broaden immune defenses so that people are better protected against serious illness whether they encounter an omicron relative in the coming months -- or a different mutant that’s more like the original virus.

“We want to have the best of both worlds,” Pfizer’s Dr. Bill Gruber, a pediatrician, told The Associated Press. He hopes the updated shots will “re-energize interest in protecting children for the winter.”

The updated boosters are “extremely important” for keeping kids healthy and in school, said Dr. Jason Newland, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Washington University in St. Louis.

Parents should know “there is no concern from the safety perspective with the bivalent vaccines, whether Moderna or Pfizer,” Newland added.

Only people who’ve gotten their initial vaccinations -- with any of the original-formula versions -- qualify for an updated booster. That means about three-fourths of Americans 12 and older are eligible. As of last weekend, only at least 13 million had gotten an updated booster, White House COVID-19 coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha estimated Tuesday.

To pediatricians’ chagrin, getting children their first vaccinations has been tougher. Less than a third of 5- to 11-year-olds have had their two primary doses and thus would qualify for the new booster.

This age group will get kid-size doses of the updated booster — and they can receive it at least two months after their last dose, whether that was a primary vaccination or an earlier booster, the FDA said.

Pfizer said it could ship up to 6 million kid-sized doses within a week of authorization, in addition to ongoing adult-dose shipments.

Until now, Moderna’s updated booster was cleared only for adults. Wednesday's FDA action authorized the booster for teens as well as children as young as age 6.

As for even younger tots, first vaccinations didn’t open for the under-5 age group until mid-June -- and it will be several more months before regulators decide if they’ll also need a booster using the updated recipe.

FDA authorizes omicron booster shots for children as young as 5

Leticia Gonzalez, 27, died Sunday October 9, 2022, in Kearny County. She was born October 17, 1994, in Scott City, Kansas. 
Leticia had the biggest heart, she loved her family dearly, especially 
her nieces and nephews. She was funny, and outgoing; she lit up the room
 with her beauty and personality. She was always so happy to do make-up 
she had such a passion for being glamorous and making others look and 
feel beautiful! She truly was the life of the party, and the heart of 
her sisters. She will be remembered by that beautiful smile and that 
laugh she always had.

Although she lived in Wichita with her older 
sister, she really loved traveling back and forth to visit her loved ones
 in Garden city. She loved all her nieces and nephews so much like they 
were all her own children. And they loved her like as if she was a 
second mother to them. She was very close with her God son named 
Jiovanni and a nephew named Julian (JuJu) whom she told every one was 
her baby. Besides just hanging out with her family she also loved to 
take big family trips with them. She was someone you could call at 
anytime or any day and she would always answer for you. She gave her 
mother a phone call every day she was the baby of the three girls so she
 was her mothers world. Life for her family and friends will never be 
the same because she was someone who was always there for them and 
always called to make sure they were okay.

 </figure>Leticia Gonzalez, 27, died Sunday October 9, 2022, in Kearny County. She was born October 17, 1994, in Scott City, Kansas. 
Leticia had the biggest heart, she loved her family dearly, especially 
her nieces and nephews. She was funny, and outgoing; she lit up the room
 with her beauty and personality. She was always so happy to do make-up 
she had such a passion for being glamorous and making others look and 
feel beautiful! She truly was the life of the party, and the heart of 
her sisters. She will be remembered by that beautiful smile and that 
laugh she always had. Although she lived in Wichita with her older 
sister, she really loved traveling back and forth to visit her loved ones
 in Garden city. She loved all her nieces and nephews so much like they 
were all her own children. And they loved her like as if she was a 
second mother to them. She was very close with her God son named 
Jiovanni and a nephew named Julian (JuJu) whom she told every one was 
her baby. Besides just hanging out with her family she also loved to 
take big family trips with them. She was someone you could call at 
anytime or any day and she would always answer for you. She gave her 
mother a phone call every day she was the baby of the three girls so she
 was her mothers world. Life for her family and friends will never be 
the same because she was someone who was always there for them and 
always called to make sure they were okay. 
Survivors include her Mother- Sabrina Ann Crouch (Brandon Crouch) of 
Garden City, Sisters- Joslyn Hernandez-Morales (Jorge Garcia) of 
Wichita, and Megan Gonzales (Lyman Chandler) of Garden City, Nieces and 
Nephews- Nevaeh, Michael, Natalie, Aviana, Jorge Jr, Jiovanni, Aubrey, 
Julian, and Lyman, Jr. Grandmother- Mary Hernandez, Close Cousins- 
Anissa Hernandez and Kaitlyn Hernandez, Marcus Alexander Montoya, and 
Eloisa Hernandez Aunts- Cecelia Perez (Noe Perez), Beatrice Hernandez, 
and Serena Hernandez. Uncles Steven Hernandez of Garden City, and Jack 
Hernandez of Yuma Arizona 
She is preceded in death by her Nephew- Kaylien Gonzales, Uncle- Joseph Hernandez, and Grandfather- Herman Hernandez. 
A Rosary will be held Thursday October 13, 2022, at 7:30 pm and Funeral 
Mass will be held Friday October 14, 2022 at 3:00 pm both at St. Mary 
Catholic Church with Father Jacob Schneider as officiant. Burial will 
follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas. Visitation will 
be Wednesday, October 12,from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Thursday, October 13,&nbsp; from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.

Stephen V. Bond, age 79, passed away October 8 at Lawrence Memorial 
Hospital, Lawrence, KS.  He was born in Salina, KS on October 18, 1942, 
the only child of Paul &amp; Aileen (Patterson) Bond.

Steve
 graduated from Plainville High School in 1960, and then served in the 
Army from January 1964 to November 1964 when he received a medical 
discharge.  Two years later, he met and married Mary Hannah Page. They 
were partners in marriage for 56 years.

He earned a 
degree in Civil Engineering from University of Kansas in 1976.  After 
graduation Steve’s family moved to Great Bend where he went to work for 
Petroleum, Inc. for approximately 10 years.  Later, the family moved to 
Wichita where Steve was employed by the Kansas Corporation Commission.  
He retired in June 2014.

As a young man Steve liked to 
hunt and play golf and was an avid KU sports fan throughout his life.  
After retirement he enjoyed being outdoors puttering in the yard for 
hours on end.  Steve and Mary traveled often to visit their children and
 grandchildren attending birthdays, holidays, and sporting events.

He
 was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife Mary 
(Page) Bond; son Matthew Bond (Shannon); son Cole Bond (Kasey); and 
daughter Andrea Graham (Brandon) and 12 grandchildren: Drew, Olivia, 
Luke, Joshua, Micah, Asher, Jackson, Rylie, Hudson, Ben, Charlie, &amp; 
Jake.

A Memorial Service is planned for Monday, Oct 17th,&nbsp; at 12:00 p.m. (noon) at Plumer- Overlease Funeral Home in Plainville,

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas' Republican attorney general told a racial justice commission two years ago that racial bias “obviously” exists in law enforcement, but he said Tuesday that he wasn't saying systemic racism exists and stood by campaign attacks on the state's Democratic governor for using that phrase.

Attorney General Derek Schmidt and fellow Republicans are portraying Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly as anti-police as Schmidt tries to unseat Kelly in the Nov. 8 election. George Floyd's death in 2020 led Kelly to form a Commission on Racial Justice and Equity to examine policing, declaring as she did, "Systemic racism within law enforcement must end.”

Schmidt argues that saying systemic racism exists is calling law enforcement officers racist. His own comments that racial bias “obviously” exists in policing came during&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bofBgFjXXro">a Zoom meeting of the governor's commission</a>&nbsp;in October 2020. He told reporters Tuesday that when “a rare bad apple" commits misconduct, “There are mechanisms in place to deal with those individual problems.”

“They are two different things,” Schmidt said during an impromptu news conference following an event at the Kansas Bureau of Investigation's forensics center in Topeka. “I certainly don’t argue that there is systemic racism in law enforcement, and I think the governor’s decision to appoint an entire separate commission to focus on that problem was ill-advised.”

Both parties expect the Kansas governor's race to be close, and Schmidt has joined other Republican candidates across the U.S.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-health-police-covid-campaigns-13d5f83a6604df1bc6a33779fa159e93">in pivoting to crime</a>&nbsp;as a big issue as he tries to win back independent and moderate Republican voters who backed Kelly in 2018. Part of his strategy is painting Kelly as antagonistic toward the police.

Kelly's campaign responded Tuesday with the same statement it issued last week, saying Schmidt is engaged in “false smears” and that Kelly has delivered “historic investments” in law enforcement. Since Kelly took office in January 2019, spending on the prison system and Kansas Highway Patrol has grown by nearly 33%, though funding for the KBI under Schmidt’s control has remained flat.

Kelly formed her racial justice commission in June 2020 after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/derek-chauvin-trial-live-updates-04-20-2021-955a78df9a7a51835ad63afb8ce9b5c1">the police killing of Floyd</a>&nbsp;in Minneapolis. In a column she wrote afterward, Kelly said she wanted the panel to recommend “meaningful and lasting change.”

“Racial inequality and injustice have been part of our nation's history from the beginning,” Kelly wrote. “Communities of color do not have the luxury of time for leaders to ignore these issues any longer."

The commission’s numerous recommendations in 2020 and 2021 included ensuring robust anti-bias training, prohibiting fired officers from working again in law enforcement, and revising local policies on the use of force. Despite Kelly's call for lasting change,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/death-of-george-floyd-ahmaud-arbery-politics-fa050ad76069e35ae20c6e114492d437">her administration did not push</a>&nbsp;the Republican-controlled Legislature to enact them.

Schmidt said that although if he were governor, he would have condemned Floyd's death and called on Minnesota to deal with officers' conduct, he also would have condemned violence during protests over Floyd's death and suggested that some leaders then were “elevating this issue in an inflammatory manner.”

During his Zoom presentation to Kelly's racial justice commission in October 2020, Schmidt briefed members on the role of the attorney general's office and the state Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training in reviewing allegations of racial bias against officers. CPOST certifies and disciplines law enforcement officers.

During the meeting, commission member Mark McCormick asked Schmidt, “To what degree do you think racial bias exists in our system here in the state?"

Schmidt replied: “You know, Mark, I mean, obviously, it does exist. It exists in human relations, and so it therefore exists in the subset of human relations that include law enforcement interactions with people.”

Schmidt added that he believes that the CPOST and individual law enforcement agencies take complaints of racial bias “quite seriously” and that “it’s not an also-ran consideration.”

He told reporters Tuesday that law enforcement officers “overwhelmingly are honorable" and that it's a disservice to them for the governor to suggest that policing is “systemically racist.”

Amos J. Bozarth Jr. was born April 13, 1943 on a farm near Laverne, 
Oklahoma, to Amos J Bozarth Sr. and Phyllis Jean (Cole) Bozarth. He 
departed this life October 9, 2022, at Wichita, KS at the age of 79 
years, 5 months and 26 days.

For those who would like to join in the celebration of A.J.’s life, 
the funeral services will be at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day
 Saints, 7834 West 29th St. N. Wichita, 67205 on Monday, October 17th 
with the viewing from 10:00-10:45am and funeral service at 11:00am.

Conway Springs, Kansas. (2nd Addition).

A.J. spent his early childhood in Wichita and attended South 
Riverside Elementary. He moved with his family to Derby and graduated 
from Derby Senior High School in 1961. At the age of 16, he started his 
printing career as an apprentice printer at the Derby News. During his remaining high school years A.J. worked after school for The Mulvane News.

A.J. met his wife, Karen Jean Barton on a blind date and they were 
married two years later on April 11, 1965 at the Conway Springs Church 
of the Brethren. They made their home in Conway Springs where they 
raised their family of five children.

At the age of 19, A.J. was employed as a Linotype operator and printer by R.H. Cline of the Conway Springs Star and The Argonia Argosy.
 After R.H. retired from the Star, he continued his employment with the 
Star for a total of 10 years. At the age of 23 he purchased The South Haven New Era newspaper during his continued employment at the Star. A.J. worked in the evenings to publish the South Haven New Era. He continued to publish it for over 50 years. In 1987, he established The Norwich News which he published for over 30 years.

In 1973, A.J. went into business for himself as A.J.’s Printing and 
purchased Dr. Eugene McCormick’s office building on Spring Avenue. In 
August 2002 he moved his printing shop to a new building at 215 S. 
Eighth in Conway Springs.

A.J. was a member of Conway Springs Chamber of Commerce and served on
 the Conway Springs Fire Dept. He served 16 years on the Conway Springs 
City Council. During his tenure, he served two years as President of the 
Council and 12 years as Mayor. As Mayor, A.J. focused on city 
improvements and infrastructure. &nbsp;

The City of Conway Springs honored and recognized A.J.’s service to 
the community by having him serve as the Fall Festival Parade Marshall 
in 2016.

A.J. was an active member in his church. He served as Cubmaster and 
Scoutmaster for 12 years. As Scoutmaster, he had five Eagle Scouts in 
his troop. These five young men also later served two-year church 
missions.

He has served nine years in the Wichita Kansas Stake Presidency and 
14 years as Branch President and Bishop of the Wellington Ward of The 
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For the past 15 years, A.J.
 has served as the patriarch for the Wichita Kansas Stake, ministering 
over 400 patriarchal blessings. The example he set for his family has 
generated 14 full-time missionaries, with many more to come. His son 
Greg served 2 years in Tacoma, Washington. Thirteen grandchildren have 
served or are serving missions:

A.J. was a talented artist. He created many paintings and drawings 
throughout his life. There have been many requests from family members 
for him to paint more. Just retire already and we will provide you with 
our requests. A.J. gifted a painting to each of his five children as 
wedding presents when they were married. He painted scenes from the 
community including the Spring House in Conway Springs, and a multitude 
of religious scenes, but his favorite were landscapes. I’m sure all of 
these pieces will create many spirited discussions in the near future as
 everyone tries to lay their claim to these precious memories.&nbsp;

A.J. and Karen loved to travel. They made countless trips to Utah for
 babies being born, priesthood ordinations, Eagle Scout ceremonies, 
mission farewells, holidays, and weddings. They were committed to being 
in their children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s lives 
regardless of the distance between them. For their 50th wedding 
anniversary, Mom, Dad and their children and spouses went on an Alaskan 
cruise.

Later in life, A.J. and Karen returned to Eureka Springs, Arkansas 
where they had honeymooned. Ultimately, they purchased a timeshare on 
TableRock Lake in Branson, Missouri. They wanted to create even more 
memories with their family. For the past 17 years, family has gathered 
at Big Cedar to go boating, fishing, swimming, miniature golfing, drink 
lots of hot chocolate, watch fireworks, tours of the fish hatchery, see a
 variety of shows in Branson, ride go-karts, and endless trips to Silver
 Dollar City. It also included lots of naps, but most of those were 
taken by Mom and Dad. For the past 12 years, Mom organized a family 
reunion every two years in Granby, Colorado. In the mountains, the 
family did lots of hiking, did water sports, rode ATVs on the mountain 
trails and always got ice cream in Grand Lake. Dad never missed a chance
 to eat ice cream. He would frequently tell the story of his first ice 
cream cone as a kid. He picked up glass bottles to recycle and get money
 to buy his first ice cream cone. It was so delicious, as soon as he 
finished eating it, he immediately returned to hunting for more bottles 
and bought a second ice cream cone later that day.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother John Bozarth and two sisters: Alta Bowman and Christine Ryno.

A.J. is survived by his wife Karen; his children: Deborah (John) 
McCurdy of Lindon, Utah; Gregory (Carmel) Bozarth of Ivins, Utah; Teresa
 (Phillip) Beehler of Spanish Fork, Utah; Lora (Michael) Bull of 
Monument, Colorado; Mechelle (Jason) Conrady of Wichita, Kansas; one 
sister Ernestine Turner of Wichita, Kansas; 23 grandchildren; 11 great 
grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends.

Cheers to endless ice cream cones in heaven. Thanks for the memories, Dad.

throughout his life. There have been many requests from family members 
for him to paint more. Just retire already and we will provide you with 
our requests. A.J. gifted a painting to each of his five children as 
wedding presents when they were married. He painted scenes from the 
community including the Spring House in Conway Springs, and a multitude 
of religious scenes, but his favorite were landscapes. I’m sure all of 
these pieces will create many spirited discussions in the near future as
 everyone tries to lay their claim to these precious memories.&nbsp;A.J. and Karen loved to travel. They made countless trips to Utah for
 babies being born, priesthood ordinations, Eagle Scout ceremonies, 
mission farewells, holidays, and weddings. They were committed to being 
in their children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s lives 
regardless of the distance between them. For their 50th wedding 
anniversary, Mom, Dad and their children and spouses went on an Alaskan 
cruise.Later in life, A.J. and Karen returned to Eureka Springs, Arkansas 
where they had honeymooned. Ultimately, they purchased a timeshare on 
TableRock Lake in Branson, Missouri. They wanted to create even more 
memories with their family. For the past 17 years, family has gathered 
at Big Cedar to go boating, fishing, swimming, miniature golfing, drink 
lots of hot chocolate, watch fireworks, tours of the fish hatchery, see a
 variety of shows in Branson, ride go-karts, and endless trips to Silver
 Dollar City. It also included lots of naps, but most of those were 
taken by Mom and Dad. For the past 12 years, Mom organized a family 
reunion every two years in Granby, Colorado. In the mountains, the 
family did lots of hiking, did water sports, rode ATVs on the mountain 
trails and always got ice cream in Grand Lake. Dad never missed a chance
 to eat ice cream. He would frequently tell the story of his first ice 
cream cone as a kid. He picked up glass bottles to recycle and get money
 to buy his first ice cream cone. It was so delicious, as soon as he 
finished eating it, he immediately returned to hunting for more bottles 
and bought a second ice cream cone later that day.He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother John Bozarth and two sisters: Alta Bowman and Christine Ryno.A.J. is survived by his wife Karen; his children: Deborah (John) 
McCurdy of Lindon, Utah; Gregory (Carmel) Bozarth of Ivins, Utah; Teresa
 (Phillip) Beehler of Spanish Fork, Utah; Lora (Michael) Bull of 
Monument, Colorado; Mechelle (Jason) Conrady of Wichita, Kansas; one 
sister Ernestine Turner of Wichita, Kansas; 23 grandchildren; 11 great

The OPEC decision should result in your administration working to increase domestic oil and gas production, not continuing to tap the SPR at unsustainable levels or easing sanctions on oppressive governments in countries like Venezuela. The current geopolitical turmoil requires robust exploration and production of oil to boost American energy security. Rather than support American energy production, the Department of the Interior (DOI) announced it would raise royalty rates for onshore leases and cut acreage available for leasing by 80 percent.&nbsp; Even after the emergency oil reserves had been depleted, DOI’s proposed five-year offshore oil and gas leasing plan opened the door to allowing zero lease sales through 2028, an unprecedented policy.&nbsp; With this program now lapsed, and many other offshore leases canceled, your administration is jeopardizing our nation’s ability to use our vast resources for energy independence.
