SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An intruder attacked and severely beat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband with a hammer in the couple's San Francisco home early Friday while searching for the Democratic leader and chillingly shouting: “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?”&nbsp;

Members of the Kansas and Missouri congressional delegation and others are sharing their thoughts on the attack.

Police were called to the home to check on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/paul-pelosi">Paul Pelosi</a>&nbsp;at about 2:30 a.m. when they discovered the 82-year-old and the suspect, 42-year-old David Depape, both grabbing onto the hammer, said Police Chief William Scott. The intruder yanked it from Pelosi and began beating him before being subdued and arrested by officers.

The speaker was in Washington, where she had been scheduled to appear with Vice President Kamala Harris at a fundraising event Saturday night for the LGBTQ group Human Rights Campaign, 11 days before congressional elections that have been filled with harsh, sometimes violent rhetoric. Pelosi canceled her appearance.

The intruder's shouts in Pelosi's California home were an unsettling echo of the chants during&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol</a>, when rioters trying to stop Joe Biden’s election searched menacingly through the halls for the speaker. Police said a motive for Friday's intrusion was still being determined, but three people with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press that Depape targeted Pelosi's home. Those people were not authorized to talk publicly about an ongoing probe and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Police gave few details on the suspect or his motives. But the attack raised questions about the safety of members of Congress and their families. Threats to lawmakers are at an all-time high almost two years after the Capitol insurrection. In the current midterm election campaigns, crime and public safety have emerged as top concerns among Americans.

Paul Pelosi was severely beaten, suffering blunt force trauma after he was struck several times in the head. He was admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for his injuries, the hospital confirmed. His condition was not immediately available, but Pelosi's spokesman has said he would recover.

Lawmakers from both parties reacted with shock and expressed their well wishes to the Pelosi family.

“What happened to Paul Pelosi was a dastardly act,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “I spoke with Speaker Pelosi earlier this morning and conveyed my deepest concern and heartfelt wishes to her husband and their family, and I wish him a speedy recovery.”

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on Twitter, “Horrified and disgusted by the reports that Paul Pelosi was assaulted in his and Speaker Pelosi’s home last night. Grateful to hear that Paul is on track to make a full recovery and that law enforcement including our stellar Capitol Police are on the case.”

In 2021, Capitol Police investigated around 9,600 threats made against members of Congress, and several members have been physically attacked in recent years. Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was shot in the head at an event outside a Tucson grocery store in 2011, and Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., was severely injured when a gunman opened fire on a Republican congressional baseball team practice in 2017.

Members of Congress have received additional dollars for security at their homes, but some have pushed for yet more protection as people have shown up at their homes and as members have received an increasing number of threatening communications. Nancy Pelosi, who is second in line of succession to the president, has a protective detail that was in Washington with her. She’d just returned this week from a security conference in Europe.

Often at Nancy Pelosi’s side during formal events in Washington, Paul Pelosi is a wealthy investor who largely remains on the West Coast. The couple have five adult children and many grandchildren. They have been married 59 years.

Earlier this year, Paul Pelosi pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence charges related to a May crash in California’s wine country and was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-san-francisco-nancy-pelosi-sentencing-napa-e98c47d5c47fa273cf2d65bf5c85124f">sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation</a>.

The Pelosi home in the wealthy Pacific Heights neighborhood has been the scene of several protests in the past few years. After Nancy Pelosi was seen on video getting her hair done at a salon while many were shut down during the coronavirus pandemic, stylists protested outside with curling irons. Members of the Chinese community protested outside recently before Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan.

And during debates over the federal stimulus package protesters scrawled anarchy signs in black paint across the garage door, along with “cancel rent,” and “we want everything.” They left a pig’s head on the driveway.

Meanwhile, wishes of support and concern poured in.

“We have been to many events with the Pelosis over the last 2 decades and we’ve had lots of occasions to talk about both of our families and the challenges of being part of a political family. Thinking about the Pelosi family today," tweeted Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that President Biden had also been in contact with Nancy Pelosi.

“The president is praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family,” Jean-Pierre said. “This morning he called Speaker Pelosi to express his support after this horrible attack. He is also very glad that a full recovery is expected. The president continues to condemn all violence, and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected.”

At the Capitol, Democratic Sen. Pat Leahy of Vermont, the Senate president who is third in the presidential line of succession, said he had known Paul Pelosi “forever.” He said, “It’s just horrible.”

Anita Louise Patton, 66, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, October 21, 2022, at her home in Russell.

Anita grew up in Rice, Ellsworth and Russell counties and graduated 
from Lucas High School in 1973.&nbsp; She earned an associate’s degree in 
accounting from Barton County Community College.&nbsp; Her other studies 
included Emergency Management Technician and was an EMT for many years.&nbsp;
 Anita worked as a cashier at Sunflower Bank in Russell and later in the
 office at Russell County Highway Department for 22 years, retiring in 
June of this year.&nbsp; As well as her full-time employment Anita worked 
part-time jobs including city clerk for the City of Dorrance, clerk for 
Victor Bros. Auction and Reality and for the American Legion of 
Dorrance.&nbsp; 

She was a member of the American Legion Post #334 Auxiliary, 
PYW-EHU, Dorrance 4 Wheelers and the High Rocky Mountain Riders.&nbsp; Anita 
was a dependable helper for many events of the area, enjoying many 
friendships.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending time with brothers, 
sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Surviving family include her brothers Allan Patton (Annette Hoover) 
of Chase, Kansas, Dale Patton and wife Dana of Wichita, Kansas and 
Donald Patton and wife Susan of Brookfield, Wisconsin; sisters Janet 
Mathews and husband Philip of Hutchinson, Kansas and Patti Soldan of 
Salina, Kansas and sister in-law Marsha Patton of Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Carl Patton.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The intruder who attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband in their San Francisco home was searching for the Democratic leader, shouting "Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?" before assaulting Paul Pelosi with a hammer.

Those shouts were a chilling echo of the chants during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol, when rioters trying to stop Joe Biden's election searched menacingly through the halls for the speaker.<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/paul-pelosi"> Paul Pelosi</a>&nbsp;was attacked and severely beaten by an assailant who broke into the Pelosi home early Friday, police said. The intruder confronted him shouting for the speaker's whereabouts, according to another person briefed on the situation.

“The motive for this attack is still being determined,” said San Francisco Police Chief William Scott at a press briefing.

The suspect was identified as David Depape, Scott said. He was in custody.

“Our officers observed Mr. Pelosi and the suspect both holding a hammer," Scott said. "The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it. Our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup and rendered medical aid.”

Scott said Depape was being charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse aand other charges.

The 42-year-old man broke into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home early Thursday, attacking the speaker’s husband with a hammer just as police officials responded to the home.

Police responded to the 2:27 a.m. call. Both men were holding the hammer, he said.

The 82 year-old suffered blunt force injuries to his head and body, according to two people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing probe. He was admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for his injuries, the hospital confirmed. His condition was not immediately available.

Paul Pelosi was being treated by doctors for bruising, severe swelling and other injuries.

While the circumstances of the attack were unclear, the attack raised questions about the safety of members of Congress and their families. Threats to lawmakers are at an all-time high almost two years after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">the Capitol insurrection</a>. The attack also came just 11 days ahead of midterm elections in which crime and public safety have emerged as top concerns among Americans.

In 2021, Capitol Police investigated around 9,600 threats made against members of Congress, and members have been physically attacked in recent years. Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was shot in the head at an event outside a Tucson grocery store in 2011, and Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., was severely injured when a gunman opened fire on a Republican congressional baseball team practice in 2017.

Members of Congress have received additional dollars for security at their homes, but some have pushed for yet more protection as people have shown up at their homes and as members have received an increasing number of threatening communications.

Speaker Pelosi, who is second in the line of succession to the president, had just returned this week from a security conference in Europe and is due to keynote an advocacy event Saturday evening in Washington with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Capitol Police said the FBI and San Francisco police were also investigating. The suspect was in the custody of the San Francisco police.

Often at Nancy Pelosi’s side during formal events in Washington, Paul Pelosi is a wealthy investor who largely remains on the West Coast. They have five adult children and many grandchildren. The two have been married 59 years.

President Joe Biden and lawmakers from both parties reacted to the assault with shock and expressed their well wishes to the Pelosi family.

“What happened to Paul Pelosi was a dastardly act," said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “I spoke with Speaker Pelosi earlier this morning and conveyed my deepest concern and heartfelt wishes to her husband and their family, and I wish him a speedy recovery.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that President Joe Biden has also been in contact with Nancy Pelosi.

“The President is praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family,” Jean-Pierre said. “This morning he called Speaker Pelosi to express his support after this horrible attack. He is also very glad that a full recovery is expected. The president continues to condemn all violence, and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected.”

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on twitter, “Horrified and disgusted by the reports that Paul Pelosi was assaulted in his and Speaker Pelosi’s home last night. Grateful to hear that Paul is on track to make a full recovery and that law enforcement including our stellar Capitol Police are on the case.”

At the Capitol Democratic Sen. Pat Leahy of Vermont, who is third in line of succession, said he had known Paul Pelosi “forever.” He said, “It’s just horrible.”

Barbara A. George, 89, of Salina, passed away on 
Wednesday October 26, 2022, at Paramount Health Care in Newton, KS.&nbsp; She 
was born March 27, 1933, in Plainville, KS to George (Bud) and Ruth 
Johnson.&nbsp; She married Leon George June 1, 1951, and they celebrated 50 
years of marriage before his death in April 2002. 
Barbara was a very busy homemaker raising their six children and after 
her youngest started school she entered the workforce in 1970 in the 
dietary department at the former Asbury Hospital.&nbsp; Barbara retired in 
1985 and she and Leon spent their retirement years traveling in their 
RV, fishing and camping.&nbsp; Most of all, she loved spending time with her 
children and their growing families.&nbsp; Barbara was a proud member of 
Daughters of the American Revolution.&nbsp; She was very active the past 20 
years in TOPS and was Leader of her club for several consecutive years. 
She attended the First United Methodist Church and was a faithful 
Meals-on-Wheels volunteer for over 10 years. 
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leon; son, Steven; and sisters EveElda Johnson and Georgina Mulkey. 
She is survived by her children Debra (Bob) Klein, Karin (Steve) Ashton,
 Stephanie (Don) Lentz, Shara McMichael and Lonnie George; 16 
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. 
A private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Morris Dale Lyon, son of Fay and Ethel Spurrier Lyon, was born 
November 5, 1930, on the family farm north of Athol, Kansas.  He passed 
away Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at SunPorch of Smith County at the age
 of 91.

Dale was baptized June 22, 1958, and was 
confirmed into faith on June 22, 1958, as an adult at Zion Lutheran 
Church, north of Athol, Kansas.  He remained an active member of First 
Saint John Lutheran Church in Kensington, Kansas.  Dale attended rural 
elementary school and graduated Athol High School in May of 1949.

On
 April 5, 1952, Dale married Dolores Bohm at the American Lutheran 
Church in Smith Center, Kansas.  To this union four children were born: 
Linda, Cody, Teresa, and Kelly.  After serving in the United States 
Marine Corps, Dale and Dolores returned to Smith County to farm.  Dale 
was involved with the Farmers Union at the state level for many years.  
Dale was also on the Board of the Northwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging.
  He was a dedicated father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and 
enjoyed the many family celebrations at the farm.

Preceding
 him in death were his wife Dolores, brothers Lloyd Sloniker, Dean, 
Arven and sister-in-law Genelda, Eldon, sister Wilma Lewis and 
brother-in-law Kenneth Lewis, brothers-in-law Russell Bridgewater, and 
Paul Eller.  Great grand granddaughters Emma Jo and Cora Jo Hunter.

Survivors
 include daughter Linda and husband Dennis Hommon, son Cody and wife 
Paula Lyon, daughter Teresa and husband Galen Arment, and son Kelly and

KANSAS CITY— Kansas City Police Department detectives and the KCPD Crime Lab have determined who was responsible for the double homicide that occurred on or about October 1, in an apartment fire near 41st and Oak in Kansas City, according to Jackson Co. Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

A Kansas City Police Department investigation established that on Oct. 1, 42-year-old Kevin Ray Moore, now deceased, caused the deaths of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stowers.org/gradschool/predocs">Camila Behrensen, 24, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Pablo Guzmán Palma, 25, of Santiago, Chile</a>&nbsp;and intentionally set their apartment on fire. &nbsp;

Due to the efforts of KCPD and, in particular, the Crime Lab, KCPD used phone and computer data, surveillance videos, ballistic testing as well as DNA tests to determine the cause of the deaths of Behrensen and Guzman-Palma and to determine that Moore was the suspect. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Police also determined that Moore died as part of a murder-suicide in Clay County on Oct. 16. Moore and 40-year-old Misty Brockman, a mother of five, were found dead in a car near Worlds of Fun. Police continue to investigate their deaths.

 </figure>A Kansas City Police Department investigation established that on Oct. 1, 42-year-old Kevin Ray Moore, now deceased, caused the deaths of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stowers.org/gradschool/predocs">Camila Behrensen, 24, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Pablo Guzmán Palma, 25, of Santiago, Chile</a>&nbsp;and intentionally set their apartment on fire. &nbsp;Due to the efforts of KCPD and, in particular, the Crime Lab, KCPD used phone and computer data, surveillance videos, ballistic testing as well as DNA tests to determine the cause of the deaths of Behrensen and Guzman-Palma and to determine that Moore was the suspect. &nbsp;&nbsp;Police also determined that Moore died as part of a murder-suicide in Clay County on Oct. 16. Moore and 40-year-old Misty Brockman, a mother of five, were found dead in a car near Worlds of Fun. Police continue to investigate their deaths.

George&nbsp;V.&nbsp;Dinkel, age 73, formerly of Brownell, Kansas, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2022, at his home in Victoria, Kansas.

He was born September 7, 1949, in Hays, Kansas to Victor J. and Juliana M. (Rajewski). &nbsp;He married Velma&nbsp;(Unrein) on January 8, 1972, in Hays, Kansas.

He was a truck driver for National Carriers for over 20 years, and&nbsp;also was a farmer. &nbsp;He was a 1967 graduate of Ellis High School and was&nbsp;a&nbsp;member of Christ The King Catholic Church&nbsp;of WaKeeney, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a veteran of the US Army and&nbsp;moved to Victoria in the spring of this year&nbsp;from Brownell, Kansas.

George V. Dinkel

James Wayne Richardson, 84, passed away on October 26, 2022, at his 
home in Great Bend, Kan. He was born on August 30, 1938, in Stafford, 
Kan., to Everett and Irene (Bates) Richardson. On October 09, 1960, he 
married Carolyn Allison in Stafford, Kan. She survives.

Coming from Colorado Springs, Colo., James was a Great Bend resident 
for the past 7 years. He was a man of great faith – being a member of 
many churches during his time in Colorado, including Security Christian 
and United Methodist Church – and spread that faith through his work in 
different church leadership roles through the years as well as doing 
outreach and prison ministry through Kairos for over 20 years. James was
 also a life-long racer, having been part of the start of the SRCA 
dragstrip and its maintenance, enjoying circle track racing, and racing 
at Pikes Peak Hill Climb. He was also a dedicated Boy Scout in his 
childhood, later serving as a Boy Scout leader for some of his sons.

Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, J.D. Richardson 
of Great Bend, Kan., Bradley (Sandra) Richardson of Peyton, Colo., and 
Marc Richardson of Great Bend, Kan.; five grandchildren, Heather Werner,
 Savannah Richardson, Devian McDowell, Dorian McDowell, and Darisha 
McDowell; and four great-grandchildren, Brittany and Gage Werner, and 
Mia and Dominic McDowell. He was preceded in death by his parents and a 
sister, Bonnie Gittins.

Visitation will take place from Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 
November 1, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving guests 
from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will take place at 10:00 
a.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at Encounter Church, with Pastor 
Jake Newman presiding. Interment will follow at Stafford Cemetery.

FINNEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent knife attack at a McDonald's in Garden City and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday,&nbsp; police were dispatched to the McDonald's 1106 N. Taylor Avenue in Garden City for a fight in progress, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, officers located a woman and two men standing outside of the business and learned one of the men had been stabbed.

The investigation revealed that the three individuals were shopping in Garden City when they were confronted by a man known to them, identified as 33-year-old Adam Barnett of Scott City.

 The three individuals fled the confrontation in their vehicle with Barnett attempting to follow them. The three&nbsp; believed they had lost Barnett and stopped to eat at McDonald’s West. 

Barnett arrived at McDonald’s a short time later, exited his vehicle with a knife in his hand and began walking towards the restaurant.

 The two men met Barnett in the parking lot, and a physical altercation ensued. The fight continued inside the business near the restroom where the woman was hiding. 

One of the men attempted to stop Barnett from entering the restroom when Barnett stabbed him. 

The fight was broken up, and Barnett then fled the area in his vehicle. EMS transported the 32-year-old male stabbing victim to St. Catherine Hospital, where he was treated and released for his injury. 

Police later located Barnett and took into custody on requested charges of Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, Stalking and Criminal Use of a Weapon.&nbsp;No other injuries were reported from the incident, according to police.

Billie Jo Breit, age 79, of Pfeifer, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at the Russell Regional Hospital - Russell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, October 31, 2022, at 10 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church - Pfeifer, Kansas - Inurnment will follow the services in the parish cemetery.

Memorial Visitation will be Sunday, October 30, 2022 from 6 PM to 8 PM with a combined parish vigil and rosary service at 7 PM at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine Street Hays, Kansas 67601 and from 9 AM to service time at the church on Monday.

The Kelly administration sees a bright future for Salina and its partnership with the community.

That's the word from Lieutenant Governor David Toland during an exclusive interview with Salina Post earlier this week.

Toland said the Kelly administration is proud of its partnership with the people of Salina. Toland noted not only the growth and vibrance of downtown Salina, but also the growth in local manufacturing and housing starts.

"We've been really proud, Governor Kelly and I, to have been partners with the Salina community in all of this growth, and we think that the future's very bright, and we're going to continue with the same approach and policy to economic development and to community development that we've had from the start," Toland said. "We think that that is going to continue to bring rich dividends for the Salina community."

Toland also talked about some of the accomplishments of the administration's first term.

"Since I work for the Education Governor, I would be remiss if I didn't start with fully funding our K-12 system for the last four years in a row and getting the state out of the cycle of litigation about underfunding that had really bedeviled us for over 20 years," Toland said.

"We're proud of the investments we've made in our K-12 system, but also in higher education, and that includes K-State Salina and the amazing programs that are happening there," he said.

Toland also noted new investments in the state's community colleges and technical colleges.

At the state level, there has been more than $14 billion of new investment that has occurred since Kelly took office in January of 2019, including 52,000 new and retained jobs, Toland said.

"You look at Salina specifically, there have been over 1,300 new jobs created under the Kelly administration. That's 1,323 to be specific. And we've had $687.4 million of private business investment that has happened in Saline County since 2019," he said.

"When you look at the variety of things that have happened in Salina specifically, you know, from Schwans, where the largest frozen pizza plant in the world is going to open next week to Great Plains Manufacturing, which has taken over the Phillips Lighting facility, is just such a great opportunity to really grow the Kubota footprint in Kansas," Toland continued. "There's so much room for growth in that massive facility."

Toland also talked about 1 Vision Aviation at the Salina Regional Airport as an example of growth in Salina, noting how 1 Vision Aviation was able to utilize the assets of the airport in creating new jobs and new investment.

"It's so healthy to have this kind of diversity, from food processing to advanced manufacturing to maintenance, repair, and overhaul for aviation. It's really a good sign about the health of the Salina economy that you've had this kind of diversity of growth," he said.

Getting legislation passed to eliminate the state's sales tax on groceries is also listed among the Kelly administration's accomplishments.

"We're really proud that we were able to ax the food tax. And this is both an accomplishment and a to-do for January because axing the food tax got through, but it's on a schedule that takes it a couple of years out before it's actually eliminated, and that's because Derek Schmidt's allies in the legislature didn't want to give Governor Kelly a win in an election year, and so they were playing politics with people's grocery bills," Toland said.

"And so, Priority One along with Medicaid expansion in our second term is going to be immediately axing the food tax so that it takes effect hopefully in January, so that we can give some relief to families that are really struggling and seniors in particular who are on fixed incomes," he said.

According to Toland, there are more than 1,000 highway construction projects that currently are underway across the state.

"You know, coming to Salina on I-70, there are an awful lot of orange barrels, and that's a good thing. It means that we've stopped the raid of the 'Bank of KDOT' that happened under the Brownback administration, all these transfers of money that Derek Schmidt supported, and we've been able to fully fund the infrastructure we need," Toland said.

Additionally, as part of the IKE Transportation Plan through the Kansas Department of Transportation, funding is available to increase broadband internet offerings in the state.

"We're really proud that there are 55,000 new households and businesses that have been connected to high-speed internet in the last 18 months," he said.

"When you think about those kinds of investements, and then you think about how Derek Schmidt says he wants to get in and start slashing and cutting, you know, he's going to be cutting broadband. He's going to be cutting economic development. He's going to be cutting the highway program. And these are things that the voters have made clear are important to them and they don't want to see us go down that road again," Toland said.

As campaigning for the upcoming election has progressed, a number of well-known Republicans have come out in support of the Kelly-Toland ticket. Those Republicans include former Kansas governors Bill Graves and Mike Hayden, former U.S. senators from Kansas Nancy Kassebaum and Sheila Frahm, former U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister, former Republican National Committee Committeewoman Alicia Salisbury, and former Kansas Attorney General Robert Stephan.

"I think it reflects who the governor and I are as people. We are centrist, concensus builders who work to find common ground and who don't worry so much about party labels. We worry about getting the public policy right and doing things that not only help people in the here and now, but really set up the next generation for success," Toland said.

He continued, "Ultimately, I think the reason we've got such strong Republican support across the state is that folks see that Governor Kelly is a middle-of-the-road governor who works to craft sound public policy and isn't worried about party labels. She's worried about getting it right."

Recently, the British tabloid The Daily Mail falsely claimed that the Kansas Department of Commerce and its Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC), provided funding for drag shows in Wichita. A poster for one of the shows included the Department of Commerce/KCAIC logo.

Members of the GOP, including Kelly's gubernatorial opponent Derek Schmidt, expressed outrage over the alleged funding, which the Kelly administration quickly debunked as false.

When asked about the issue, Toland said, "It's just flat out not true. It didn't happen," calling the incident a "classic, late October political dirty trick."

OpenStudios, the sponsor of one of the Wichita events, also noted that no state funds were to be used for the event. In a post on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/OpenStudiosICT">its Facebook page</a>, Open Studios wrote, "You may have noticed we had to erase a few posts about the event because of some (frustrating) marketing miscommunications. After a few inquiries, we’d like to clarify that the KCAIC is not sponsoring this event. Their logo was placed on former posters because of their relationship with Fisch Bowl Inc., who hosts the OpenStudios spaces at Towne West. No state funds were used in support of this event."

"We think that that is going to continue to bring rich dividends for the Salina community."School fundingToland also talked about some of the accomplishments of the administration's first term."Since I work for the Education Governor, I would be remiss if I didn't start with fully funding our K-12 system for the last four years in a row and getting the state out of the cycle of litigation about underfunding that had really bedeviled us for over 20 years," Toland said."We're proud of the investments we've made in our K-12 system, but also in higher education, and that includes K-State Salina and the amazing programs that are happening there," he said.Toland also noted new investments in the state's community colleges and technical colleges.Economic developmentAt the state level, there has been more than $14 billion of new investment that has occurred since Kelly took office in January of 2019, including 52,000 new and retained jobs, Toland said."You look at Salina specifically, there have been over 1,300 new jobs created under the Kelly administration. That's 1,323 to be specific. And we've had $687.4 million of private business investment that has happened in Saline County since 2019," he said."When you look at the variety of things that have happened in Salina specifically, you know, from Schwans, where the largest frozen pizza plant in the world is going to open next week to Great Plains Manufacturing, which has taken over the Phillips Lighting facility, is just such a great opportunity to really grow the Kubota footprint in Kansas," Toland continued. "There's so much room for growth in that massive facility."Toland also talked about 1 Vision Aviation at the Salina Regional Airport as an example of growth in Salina, noting how 1 Vision Aviation was able to utilize the assets of the airport in creating new jobs and new investment."It's so healthy to have this kind of diversity, from food processing to advanced manufacturing to maintenance, repair, and overhaul for aviation. It's really a good sign about the health of the Salina economy that you've had this kind of diversity of growth," he said.Axing the food taxGetting legislation passed to eliminate the state's sales tax on groceries is also listed among the Kelly administration's accomplishments."We're really proud that we were able to ax the food tax. And this is both an accomplishment and a to-do for January because axing the food tax got through, but it's on a schedule that takes it a couple of years out before it's actually eliminated, and that's because Derek Schmidt's allies in the legislature didn't want to give Governor Kelly a win in an election year, and so they were playing politics with people's grocery bills," Toland said."And so, Priority One along with Medicaid expansion in our second term is going to be immediately axing the food tax so that it takes effect hopefully in January, so that we can give some relief to families that are really struggling and seniors in particular who are on fixed incomes," he said.InfrastructureAccording to Toland, there are more than 1,000 highway construction projects that currently are underway across the state."You know, coming to Salina on I-70, there are an awful lot of orange barrels, and that's a good thing. It means that we've stopped the raid of the 'Bank of KDOT' that happened under the Brownback administration, all these transfers of money that Derek Schmidt supported, and we've been able to fully fund the infrastructure we need," Toland said.Additionally, as part of the IKE Transportation Plan through the Kansas Department of Transportation, funding is available to increase broadband internet offerings in the state."We're really proud that there are 55,000 new households and businesses that have been connected to high-speed internet in the last 18 months," he said."When you think about those kinds of investements, and then you think about how Derek Schmidt says he wants to get in and start slashing and cutting, you know, he's going to be cutting broadband. He's going to be cutting economic development. He's going to be cutting the highway program. And these are things that the voters have made clear are important to them and they don't want to see us go down that road again," Toland said.Republican supportAs campaigning for the upcoming election has progressed, a number of well-known Republicans have come out in support of the Kelly-Toland ticket. Those Republicans include former Kansas governors Bill Graves and Mike Hayden, former U.S. senators from Kansas Nancy Kassebaum and Sheila Frahm, former U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister, former Republican National Committee Committeewoman Alicia Salisbury, and former Kansas Attorney General Robert Stephan."I think it reflects who the governor and I are as people. We are centrist, concensus builders who work to find common ground and who don't worry so much about party labels. We worry about getting the public policy right and doing things that not only help people in the here and now, but really set up the next generation for success," Toland said.He continued, "Ultimately, I think the reason we've got such strong Republican support across the state is that folks see that Governor Kelly is a middle-of-the-road governor who works to craft sound public policy and isn't worried about party labels. She's worried about getting it right."No drag party fundingRecently, the British tabloid The Daily Mail falsely claimed that the Kansas Department of Commerce and its Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC), provided funding for drag shows in Wichita. A poster for one of the shows included the Department of Commerce/KCAIC logo.Members of the GOP, including Kelly's gubernatorial opponent Derek Schmidt, expressed outrage over the alleged funding, which the Kelly administration quickly debunked as false.READ:&nbsp;Kan. GOP seize on false report about drag show to attack GovernorWhen asked about the issue, Toland said, "It's just flat out not true. It didn't happen," calling the incident a "classic, late October political dirty trick."OpenStudios, the sponsor of one of the Wichita events, also noted that no state funds were to be used for the event. In a post on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/OpenStudiosICT">its Facebook page</a>, Open Studios wrote, "You may have noticed we had to erase a few posts about the event because of some (frustrating) marketing miscommunications. After a few inquiries, we’d like to clarify that the KCAIC is not sponsoring this event. Their logo was placed on former posters because of their relationship with Fisch Bowl Inc., who hosts the OpenStudios spaces at Towne West. No state funds were used in support of this event."
