Continuing through January 2, the Hays Police Department will join many other law enforcement agencies across the state in the New Year’s holiday 'Taking Down DUI' traffic enforcement campaign. 

 The New Year’s holiday period outranks most of the other holidays in number of crashes in which at least one of the drivers is impaired. 

Leave your car at home and ride with a designated driver or take other transportation services.  If you are hosting a party, make sure everyone has a sober ride home.  If you see what appears to be an impaired driver, please call 911, you might just save a life. 

 Keep in mind that if you are going to be using ANY impairing substance– don’t even consider driving. 

 Line up a ride with a sober acquaintance or other safe transportation BEFORE you go out. 

  Make the right choice, the sober choice.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hays High FFA Alumni &amp; Supporters would like to invite you to their 3rd annual benefit dinner, auction, and concert featuring 80 Proof Alice.&nbsp;Reigning from Hays, Kansas, 80 Proof Alice is a high-energy trio performing all types of music blended into a bluegrass style. 

This benefit event will take place on Saturday, January 25 at the Ellis County Fair Grounds, Schenk Building. Doors open at 5:00 p.m., dinner will be served at 6:00 with the concert and auction to follow. Cash bar will be available.

The goal of the Hays High FFA Alumni and Supporters organization is to support the Hays High FFA chapter by providing students with potential scholarships, FFA jackets, meal stipends for travel, or other needs that may arise. Jan. 25 fundraiser to benefit Hays High School FFA members

Ronnie David Richter, 72, of Plainville, Kansas, passed
away on December 27, 2024, at Redbud Village in Plainville. He was born on
December 30, 1951, to Nathaniel Owen and Helen Louise (Blevins) Blackwell. On
April 15, 1972, he married Kathleen Louise Fabrizius in WaKeeney, Kansas, and
together, they were blessed with two daughters, Rhonda and Nicole.

Ronnie grew up in Midwest City, Oklahoma and earned his GED
in 1973. He then proudly served in the U.S. Marines for four years, and later
worked as a roustabout for Phillips 66 and then Equinox. Ronnie also later
drove truck for various companies and owned and operated a truck of his own for
several years.

A passionate outdoorsman, Ronnie enjoyed hunting, fishing,
and time at the lake with his family. He also loved watching old westerns and
gardening. Ronnie helped his father-in-law on the farm with harvest and chores,
and his dedication to his community extended through his volunteer work as a fireman.

Ronnie is survived by his wife, Kathleen of the home in
Plainville; daughters, Rhonda (John) Dopita of Hays, KS and Nicole (Jerrod)
Pierson of Damar, KS; siblings, James (Jill) Williams of Oklahoma City, OK,
Linda Jackson of New Braunfels, TX and Robert Richter of Moore, OK; six
grandchildren: Nicholas, Noah, Isaac, Eli, Luke and Zachary; three
great-grandchildren: Evelyn, Claire and Luca; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Nathaniel
Blackwell, Jr.; sister-in-law, Diane Richter; brother-in-law, Norm Steepe; and
nephew Steve Jackson.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025, at
10AM with visitation 9AM until service time at Zion Lutheran Church - Trego
Center in WaKeeney, KS. Burial will follow in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church
and sent to Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 320 SW 2nd St,

UPU Industries closed their Junction City operation earlier this month. The closure was confirmed by HR Manager Suzanne Deegan.

UPU has been providing net wrap for round hay bales. According to the company social media page "UPU is the only manufacturer of premium range bale netting and pallet wrapping in the United States, perfect for agricultural and industrial use – from Patriot Netwrap to Baler Twine"

There were 30 employees at the plant, which began its operation in Junction City in 2003. Deegan noted that about 85% of those employees have located other work.

The UPU Industries parent company will remain in business. They are headquartered in Northern Ireland.

Kansas manufacturer with 30 employees is closed

Ernest James
Leiker (Ernie), 89, of Aurora, Colorado, passed away on December 24, 2024. 

He was born on
December 2, 1935 in Hays, Kansas to Jacob and Anna Leiker. He was a middle
sibling with an older brother, Herb; an older sister, Marietta; and a younger
sister, Darlene. While growing up and attending school at St. Joseph Military
School in Hays, he enjoyed sports such as baseball and boxing. After high
school he enlisted in the United States Army and served for two years. 

After serving
in the Army, he attended Ft. Hays State College. Around this time, he met and
married Glenna Ochs of Bison, Kansas. The two moved to Colorado with a group of
friends and set up their home in Denver.&nbsp;
&nbsp;

Ernie and
Glenna had three children: Steve, born in 1960; Marilyn, born in 1964; and
Kevin, born in 1967. A fourth child, Bruce, was born in 1963; Bruce died of
natural causes shortly after birth.&nbsp; 

Ernie enjoyed a
25-year career with Montgomery Wards as a store and regional manager. His
positions took him and the family to many places to live, including Grand
Junction, Colorado; Cheyenne, Wyoming; and Kansas City, Missouri. While proud
of his career, Ernie was most proud of the fact that he put all three of his
children through college, with Steve and Kevin graduating from University of
Northern Colorado and Marilyn graduating from University of Colorado. 

Ernie was an
avid traveler and was able to visit all 50 U.S. states. In addition, he was
able to see many countries, taking numerous cruises over the years. 

Ernie is
survived by his wife, Glenna Leiker; and children Steve Leiker (Lynnette);
Marilyn Katopodes (Jerry); and Kevin Leiker (Holly). He is also survived by three
grandchildren: Kaitlyn Leiker; Jacob Brock Leiker; and Delaney Katopodes. 

A Funeral Mass
and Memorial will take place on Monday, December 30 at 1 pm at Garden Plaza of
Aurora Senior Living and Care Community. Interment/Graveside Service will be at
11:30 am on Friday, January 3 at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.

TOPEKA — Kansas Supreme Court Justice K.J. Wall said Friday the state is “approaching a constitutional crisis” with a shortage of attorneys in rural areas, and that “equity and justice” are at&nbsp; stake.

Wall spoke at a news conference in Concordia as a committee tasked with studying the crisis over the past two years&nbsp;<a href="https://kscourts.gov/KSCourts/media/KsCourts/court%20administration/Rural-Justice-Initiative/Kansas-Rural-Justice-Initiative-Committee-Final-Report.pdf" target="_blank">unveiled a report</a>&nbsp;that offers recommendations for attracting more attorneys to practice in rural areas. The report also presents stark data: Outside of the state’s five most-populous counties, just 21% of active attorneys serve 45% of the state’s population.

One-third of the attorneys in those 100 rural counties are over the age of 60.

“The problem is serious, and it is not going to get better without intervention and affirmative action,” Wall said.

Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Marla Luckert established the Rural Justice Initiative Committee on Dec. 1, 2022. The&nbsp;<a href="https://kscourts.gov/About-the-Courts/Court-Administration/Committees/Kansas-Rural-Justice-Initiative-Committee" target="_blank">35-member committee</a>&nbsp;included judges, legislators, attorneys, educators, business leaders, and organizations that serve victims of sexual or domestic violence.

Luckert said at Friday’s news conference that she formed the committee after hearing from judges who said they couldn’t find attorneys who were qualified or willing to take cases, from attorneys who wanted to retire but didn’t want to leave their communities without legal help, and from local governments that struggled to hire a city or county attorney.

She said “we knew we had a crisis,” but she wanted to know “how pervasive” it was.

“I think we found that it was even worse than we thought it would be,” Luckert said.

Data from the committee’s 84-page report shows 1,401 attorneys work in rural Kansas counties, where more than 1.3 million people live. In comparison, there are more Kansas attorneys working in Kansas City, Missouri.

Two Kansas counties — Wichita and Hodgeman, in west-central Kansas — have no attorneys at all. Seven more have no attorneys under the age of 60.

In 47 counties, there is less than one attorney per 1,000 people.

“Rural judges struggle to find attorneys in cases where the right to counsel is guaranteed by constitution or statute — cases where a person’s very liberty or right to parent their child is at stake,” the report found. “Attorneys are turning away potential clients each week because they cannot meet the demand in their communities.”

The report said barriers for attorneys working in rural areas include the balance between staggering student loan debt and lower incomes, a lack of business skills, and challenges of finding child care, housing, health care and reliable Wi-Fi.

The report makes 10 recommendations for addressing the problem. They include establishing programs to pay tuition or repay student loans for attorneys who attend law school in Kansas and practice in a rural part of the state.

Other proposals include developing a professional organization for rural attorneys to collaborate on recruitment and retention, supporting outreach efforts for K-12 students in rural Kansas, working with the Kansas Department of Commerce and Office of Rural Prosperity to help attorneys manage their businesses, and establishing a standing committee to monitor the results.

Kansas faces ‘constitutional crisis’ with rural attorney shortage

Mark Donavon Cooper, 65, of Hays, Kansas,
passed away at home on December 26th, 2024, after a courageous, two-and-a-half-year
battle with cancer.

Born in Anthony KS, on March 7, 1959, the son
of Gary and Lois (Daughhetee) Cooper. In 1978, he graduated from St. Francis
Community High School. He was married November 10, 1979, to Toby (Dirks)
Cooper. To this union a son Wesley Don and two daughters Kelsey Ann and Mindy
Louise made their family complete. He worked as an automotive service-tech

Mark was quiet, kind-hearted and talented. When
not working, you could find him in the garage tinkering with his cars or other
projects. His hobby and love of muscle cars was shared between his children and
grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his dog Lulu and was always up for
an adventure with the grandkids. &nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law
Tobias Dirks, three nephews, John and Carl Keller, Ty Hardwick and his daughter
Kelsey Cooper.

Mark is survived by his wife, Toby of the home;
son Wesley (Candice) Cooper of Leoti, daughter Mindy (Dustin) Kuhn of Hays; grandchildren
Kasen and Kaycee Kuhn, Chloe and Radley Cooper; sister Ronda Loven; sister-in-law’s,
Gwen (Mark) Keller, Gail (Bernie) Stoltmann; brother-in-law, Max (Irene) Dirks;

Bank of Hays celebrated its 20th anniversary on Dec. 19 with an office filled with customers, employees and local business leaders.

Randy Walker and John Clarke both worked to start the Bank of Hays.

"We knew early on that it was going to take a lot of money and a lot of people," Walker said at the celebration on Dec. 19. ... "The core investors and all of our stockholders planted the seed."

He said if it weren't for the community investors, Bank of Hays would not be here today.

Bank of Hays opened as a branch of&nbsp; Hanston State Bank in a modular building on Dec. 20, 2004.

The bank broke ground on a permanent building on Dec 9, 2005. Bank of Hays opened in their new location at 1000 W. 27th St. in Hays on Jan 2, 2007.

The bank's charter was moved from Hanston to Hays in 2008.

By 2012, the Bank of Hays had $200 million in assets.

Today, Bank of Hays and its branches have $350 million in assets.

The bank has branches in Hanston, Jetmore and Lewis.

Many of the bank's employees, some of whom have been with the bank for its entire existence, attended the celebration.&nbsp;

"You don't go from zero to $35o million without a lot of hard work," Walker said.&nbsp;

Joe Jeter, chairman of the board, said, "I can't tell you how wonderful the citizens of Hays have been in terms of accepting this bank and allowing this to happen, and it's just been a great run. I'm very proud of you guys."

Sarah Wasinger, president of the Chamber in Hays, said so many people in the crowd have been important to many good things that have happened in Hays.

"The idea was to have a local bank so the money would stay in the community," Walker said," so we could continue to give back, and it has happened how we had hoped."

Clarke said, "When our stockholders get dividend checks, they have more money to give to local charities in the community."

As the bank enters its next 20 years, Walker said the future looks bright.&nbsp;

He said each year, the bank goes through a strategic planning process.&nbsp;

Clarke said the bank is working through succession planning as he plans to retire soon.

One of the customers closed the event by saying Bank of Hays is "exceptional."

"The fact that your employees have been here so long shows that this is a nice place to work, too, and you must treat people right," she said.

This nomination was for the transformational leadership she has demonstrated at Westside, WeKan Center and across the cooperative.

Hays special education administrator honored

The Honorable Steve Johnson, who has served the 20th Judicial District as District Judge, Division II, for the past 12 years, has announced his retirement. The 20th Judicial District includes Russell, Barton, Ellsworth, Rice and Stafford counties.

Judge Johnson took the bench on Jan. 13, 2013. His current term ends on Jan. 13, 2025, and he did not run for re-election. 

He served in the capacity of chief judge from January 2021 through December of 2023. While serving as district judge, he had the honor of sitting with the Kansas Supreme Court on two different occasions. He also served on a panel with the Kansas Court of Appeals.

Johnson grew up on a small farm in Gove County and graduated from Healy High School and Fort Hays State University. He went on to earn his juris doctorate from the Washburn University School of Law. Prior to his time as judge, he was in private practice in Great Bend from 1985 to 2012 with Greg Bauer and Charles Pike.

Johnson expressed great appreciation for the opportunity to serve these communities as judge for this district. He indicated he will certainly miss the job that he has enjoyed so much and will also miss the people he has worked with on a day-to-day basis. 

However, he is looking forward to retirement. He and his wife, Jil, have been married for 43 years and their children, Lyndsee and Mitch, both live in Kansas City. His retirement plans include seeing more of his family and friends, traveling, and many other activities and hobbies.

Richard J. 'Rick&nbsp; Zakrzewski, 84, Hays, died Tuesday,
December 24, 2024 at Hays Good Samaritan Society.

He was born November 5, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan, the son
of Gerald and Helen Zakrzewski.&nbsp; He
attended Catholic elementary military school where he learned to eat slowly and
avoid tapioca pudding.&nbsp; In 1959, he
graduated from St. Hedwig High School, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in
geology from Wayne State University in 1963, and a Master’s Degree and PhD from
the University of Michigan in 1968.&nbsp; In
1969, he joined the Department of Geosciences at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; Rick was united in marriage to Martha Verklan
on August 13, 1966 in Dearborn, Michigan, and they celebrated 58 years of
marriage.&nbsp; During his tenure at FHSU, Dr.
Z, as his students fondly called him, published more than 65 papers as
professor of geosciences and served as chief curator of the Sternberg
Museum.&nbsp; He directed more than 30 master’s
theses and served on 76 thesis committees.&nbsp;
In 2008, he was awarded the Graduate School Lifetime Achievement Award
in addition to the Outstanding Thesis Field Study Adviser Award. 

Survivors include his wife Martha of Hays, his son, Mark
Zakrzewski and wife Randi of San Diego, CA, his daughter, Andrea Stokoe and
husband Steve of Eagle, Idaho, and six grandchildren, Alexandra, Lauren,
Caroline, Jacob, Colton, and Maverick.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday,
January 4, 2025 at the Comeau Catholic Campus Center with Fr. Curtis Carlson,
OFMCap. officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will be

City Manager Toby Dougherty announces the appointment of Jami Breit as the new city clerk for the City of Hays.&nbsp; Breit assumed her new duties December 8, 2024.

Breit was previously the deputy city clerk for the city.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She has been with the city clerk's office since she began employment with the city in 2012.

In announcing the appointment, Dougherty said “Jami is a tremendous asset and will flourish in the clerk position.” &nbsp;

The position was vacated after previous City Clerk Brenda Kitchen retired after more than 44 years with the City of Hays.&nbsp;

City of Hays promotes Jami Breit to city clerk

From a small dream to 20 years of sweet success, Augustine's Bakery has baked its way into the hearts and stomachs of Hays.

The bakery, 1305 Main St., celebrated 20 years on Dec. 1, giving gratitude to their customers and surrounding communities for their life-changing support.

The local business began in 2003. Chad and Holly Augustine founded it, as Holly transitioned from social work and Chad's exit from another bakery after it closed.

"We wouldn't be here if everybody didn't patronize us," Holly said. "I do think we have some of the best customers."

Holly said it took several years to build a customer base, during which they navigated challenges such as balancing work with raising three children and weathering recessions.

"Everybody says that you should be OK if you can survive the first five to seven years. By then, you've already made the majority of the mistakes that you're going to make and figure out what's best for business," she said.

After the business Chad worked at was sold, customers began reaching out to him for baked goods, inspiring the idea for Augustine's Bakery.

"I decided to go back to school, and everybody started calling," Chad said. "They knew I worked there and asked us to make cakes and cookies. A couple of months later, we found this building."

While Holly continued her previous job, Chad focused on getting the bakery ready with the help of family members.

Holly helped in the bakery after finishing her full-time shift but eventually left her position to fully support Chad, who had been running the shop alone.

"We decided this wasn't going to work, and if this was what we really wanted, we needed to go 100%," Holly said.

The pair worked tirelessly, often dividing responsibilities between baking, decorating and engaging with customers at the front counter.

Augustine's Bakery showed resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, staying open while adapting to the challenges.

The bakery closed its lobby for dine-in seating but stayed open for walk-in customers and introduced a temporary delivery service to meet customer needs and stability.

"We did not struggle during COVID because we didn't allow it to happen to us," Holly said.

Although demand for birthday cakes and other large-order items declined during the pandemic, strong community support kept the bakery afloat.

Nowadays, Chad will likely greet customers at the counter while Holly decorates cakes and other baked goods in the back.

"Customers do get confused when I'm up here. They're like, 'Where's Chad?'" Holly said.

The bakery’s shelves are typically filled with breakfast rolls, pastries, burritos, cookies, brownies, cupcakes and cakes, though these items tend to sell out quickly.

"If you want something, you should probably call, and then we'll pull it right off the shelf, and you can come in," Holly said.

Because custom cakes and cookies are personalized, they must be ordered in advance, either by phone or through Facebook messages.

Augustine’s Bakery caters to events like weddings, business meeting meals, special occasions and holidays.

Their three daughters helped in the bakery when they were younger and have since pursued careers in radiology and law.

Chad and Holly said they run the bakery seven days a week, dedicating their closed days to preparing for the week ahead.

"We never work less than a 12-hour day. We're on our feet from 6 a.m. till 10 p.m. some days. It takes a lot to do this," Holly said.

In 20 years, the only times both owners were gone from the bakery were for their daughters' graduations.

Recognizing the physical and mental demands, the pair admitted another 20 years of running the bakery is unlikely, but they remain dedicated to their work.

Chad said that since 2003, every business on the bakery's block has changed with one exception.

"Every business is different except us, which shows you how hard it is to keep a business going for 20 years," he said.

Augustine’s Bakery has earned several achievements, such as being voted Hays Reader’s Choice Best Bakery from 2007 to 2020 and being featured multiple times in Taste of Home Magazine as the Best Bakery in Kansas.

Augustine's Bakery is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturdays. It is closed on Christmas Eve.

 </figure>Holly said it took several years to build a customer base, during which they navigated challenges such as balancing work with raising three children and weathering recessions."Everybody says that you should be OK if you can survive the first five to seven years. By then, you've already made the majority of the mistakes that you're going to make and figure out what's best for business," she said.After the business Chad worked at was sold, customers began reaching out to him for baked goods, inspiring the idea for Augustine's Bakery."I decided to go back to school, and everybody started calling," Chad said. "They knew I worked there and asked us to make cakes and cookies. A couple of months later, we found this building."<figure>

 </figure>While Holly continued her previous job, Chad focused on getting the bakery ready with the help of family members.Holly helped in the bakery after finishing her full-time shift but eventually left her position to fully support Chad, who had been running the shop alone."We decided this wasn't going to work, and if this was what we really wanted, we needed to go 100%," Holly said.The pair worked tirelessly, often dividing responsibilities between baking, decorating and engaging with customers at the front counter.Augustine's Bakery showed resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, staying open while adapting to the challenges.The bakery closed its lobby for dine-in seating but stayed open for walk-in customers and introduced a temporary delivery service to meet customer needs and stability.<figure>

 </figure>"We did not struggle during COVID because we didn't allow it to happen to us," Holly said.Although demand for birthday cakes and other large-order items declined during the pandemic, strong community support kept the bakery afloat.Nowadays, Chad will likely greet customers at the counter while Holly decorates cakes and other baked goods in the back."Customers do get confused when I'm up here. They're like, 'Where's Chad?'" Holly said.The bakery’s shelves are typically filled with breakfast rolls, pastries, burritos, cookies, brownies, cupcakes and cakes, though these items tend to sell out quickly.<figure>

 </figure>"If you want something, you should probably call, and then we'll pull it right off the shelf, and you can come in," Holly said.Because custom cakes and cookies are personalized, they must be ordered in advance, either by phone or through Facebook messages.Augustine’s Bakery caters to events like weddings, business meeting meals, special occasions and holidays.<figure>

 </figure>Their three daughters helped in the bakery when they were younger and have since pursued careers in radiology and law.Chad and Holly said they run the bakery seven days a week, dedicating their closed days to preparing for the week ahead."We never work less than a 12-hour day. We're on our feet from 6 a.m. till 10 p.m. some days. It takes a lot to do this," Holly said.In 20 years, the only times both owners were gone from the bakery were for their daughters' graduations.Recognizing the physical and mental demands, the pair admitted another 20 years of running the bakery is unlikely, but they remain dedicated to their work.<figure>

 </figure>Chad said that since 2003, every business on the bakery's block has changed with one exception."Every business is different except us, which shows you how hard it is to keep a business going for 20 years," he said.Augustine’s Bakery has earned several achievements, such as being voted Hays Reader’s Choice Best Bakery from 2007 to 2020 and being featured multiple times in Taste of Home Magazine as the Best Bakery in Kansas.Augustine's Bakery is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturdays. Augustine's Bakery celebrates 20 years of delicious flavors in Hays

Due to the observance of the New Year’s holiday on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, refuse/recycling route collection schedules in Hays will be altered as follows:

Tuesday, December 31, 2024 and Wednesday, January 1, 2025 will both be picked up on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. 

Routes collected Monday, December 30, 2024, Thursday, January 2, &nbsp;2025, and Friday, January 3, 2025 will have no change.

Although collections may not occur on your normal day, collections will be completed during the week. &nbsp;It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recycling will be encountered around the holidays. Please make sure your refuse and recycling are out by 7:00 a.m., and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule.

City of Hays customers that may have any questions regarding this notice should contact the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department at 785-628-7350.&nbsp;

VICTORIA— Work is progressing on St. John's Place in Victoria, and deposits are being accepted for the building's senior apartments.

The apartments are set to be move-in ready by May 1, Brenda Dreiling of the Victoria Community Coalition said.

The former nursing home was taken down to the metal studs and is now being reconstructed with new electrical, plumbing, cabinets, windows, fixtures, flooring and sheetrock.

Dreiling said the building's bones were excellent, but it had been vacant for more than 10 years. The roof was damaged, causing leaks and water damage, which has all been repaired.

The building will have four two-bedroom apartments, two studio apartments and six one-bedroom apartments. One of the studio apartments will be handicap accessible.&nbsp;

Some of the amenities in the apartments include pantries, walk-in closets, water softeners, quartz countertops and barn-door entries in some rooms to optimize space.

The showers have low thresholds and built-in seats to make them more accessible for seniors.

"We wanted it to be a more upscale apartment complex for the elderly," Marilyn Braun of the coalition said. "Our intent here in Victoria was to get as many older people interested in the process as possible so we could open up some homes for younger families in the community."

Many rural communities are experiencing declining enrollments, and Dreiling said coalition members hoped bringing families to Victoria would boost local school enrollment.

She said the Victoria housing market is very tight, with many homes selling before they officially hit the market.

The senior housing at St. John's Place is meant to allow seniors in Victoria to age in place, Dreiling said.

The coalition conducted a housing study before starting the St. John's Place project. Its members found most community members were moderate-income, and senior residents wanted more housing options.

Its members found most community members were moderate-income, and senior residents wanted more housing options.Victoria has low-cost housing, but those units are usually full, Braun said.The seniors will have a shared common room with seating for socializing. There will also be a shared laundry room with three washers and dryers, which will not be coin-operated.The next renovation phase includes an activity room that can be rented by members of the public. The senior residents will be able to reserve the room for free.Several small enclosed outdoor courtyards, one with a gazebo, will also be available to the seniors. As the weather warms, coalition members will replant those courtyards and provide seating."We are looking at somebody who, as they are getting older, doesn't want to scoop snow in the winter time or mow grass, pay taxes, pay their own insurance," Dreiling said.The coalition also hopes to make St. John's Place a senior meal site to encourage senior companionship.<figure>

 </figure>The rent for the apartments starts at $725 per month for a studio and goes up to $1,275 per month for a two-bedroom apartment. The Victoria Community Coalition website has a price list, floor plans, square footage, and applications.Deposits will be required to hold an apartment until the move-in date.Although the space is under construction, coalition members are available to give interested renters tours. The coalition had an open house in December, and more open house events are planned as construction progresses.If you want to learn more about the apartments or schedule a tour, call Dreiling at 785-735-4141.<h2>Fundraising</h2>The coalition is still fundraising to complete the apartment project. Victoria has no community center or venue space except for the VFW and school spaces.The coalition would also like to add a small coffee/sandwich shop in the building. That space is across from one of the building's courtyards, which would allow for outdoor seating.The coalition is considering renovating two spaces that abut the apartments into Airbnb rentals.
