The National Weather Service in Dodge City predicts a dry, warm week with highs in the mid- to upper-70s — until late Thursday evening.

The NWS forecasts a 60 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms late Thursday night or early Friday morning, with a 40 percent to 50 percent chance the precipitation lasts through Saturday evening.

The high temperatures Friday and Saturday are only expected to reach the low- to mid-50s. Skies are expected to clear by Sunday, with highs in the low-60s.

NWS: Welcome relief from drought could end the work week

Norma J. Crouse, age 96, of Goodland, Kansas passed away Sunday, October 30, 2022 at the Cheyenne County Village in St. Francis, Kansas.

Norma was born November 4, 1925, to William and Anna (Ehlers) Tegtmeyer
 in Ogallah, Kansas. She grew up in Ogallah until she was age 4, then 
the family moved to Russell Springs, Kansas, where she graduated from 
high school in 1943. Before graduating high school, she married Allen S.
 Crouse on February 15, 1943, on the family farm, while he was home on 
leave from overseas during WWII. To this union, Larry William, Victor 
Allen and Richard Wayne were born. Norma and Allen were married for 49 ½
 years until Allen’s death in 1992.

Norma worked part-time at the Russell Springs Courthouse while still 
in high school.&nbsp; After Allen’s return from the Army, they lived in 
Bishop, California, North Platte, Nebraska, and Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; Then 
in the fall of 1965 they moved to Goodland. Norma worked at the First 
National Bank for 38 years, she retired in 2004.&nbsp;

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Norma enjoyed sports, league 
bowling, dancing, playing cards, bingo, barbequing and spending time 
with her family and friends.&nbsp;

Norma is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Allen; son, Larry; and infant brother, Harold.

She is survived by her sons, Victor of St. Francis, KS and Richard of
 Colby, KS; daughter-in-law, Marion of Valley Center, KS; grandchildren,
 Lori Crouse, Kari (James) Haden, JaLancy Meyer, Richell (Wes) Bailey, 
Leslie Wood, Greg Crouse, Cory Crouse; 10 greatgrandchildren; 7 
great-great grandchildren; and many more family and friends.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Funeral service will be Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at 11 a.m. MT at 
Bateman Funeral Home, 211 East 11th Street, Goodland.&nbsp; Interment 
following the service at the Goodland Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be

Michael Wayne McBeth, 67, Timken, Kansas, passed away Monday, October 17, 2022, at his home.

Michael was born November 9, 1954, in South Gate, California, the son
 of Cecil Wayne and Margaret Alice (Hobbs) McBeth.&nbsp; He was a resident of
 Rush County, Kansas, since 2005, moving there from Montana.&nbsp; A graduate
 of South Gate High School, South Gate, California, he was a realtor.

Survivors include:&nbsp; his sister, Patricia Nielsen, Arizona; his half 
sister, Denny Valentine, California; his nephew, Brian Acosta (Jessica),
 California; his niece, Brianne Shelly, California; two great nephews, 
Nolan Shelly and Nathan Shelly; and one great niece, Hailey Acosta.

Frederic Thomas Krebs

Nadyne F. Boone was born in Quinter, Kansas, May 1, 1941, to Herman 
and Reva Jamison. She departed this life on Friday, October 21st, at the
 age of 81, in Quinter, Kansas.

Nadyne began her walk with the Lord Jesus and was baptized in 1951. 
She remained true to Him until her death. On May 30, 1959, Nadyne was 
joined in marriage to James Boone. This union was blessed with six 
children.

Nadyne was preceded in death by her husband, James Boone, parents, 
Herman and Reva Jamison, her parents-in-law, Jesse and Edna Boone, one 
sister, Ruth, two brothers Herman Joy and Vernard Jamison, one 
granddaughter, Kristen Basore, and two brothers-in-law, Marvin Bauman 
and Ronald Filbrun.

She is survived by her six children and their companions, Janet and

 age of 81, in Quinter, Kansas.Nadyne began her walk with the Lord Jesus and was baptized in 1951. 
She remained true to Him until her death. On May 30, 1959, Nadyne was 
joined in marriage to James Boone. This union was blessed with six 
children.Nadyne was preceded in death by her husband, James Boone, parents, 
Herman and Reva Jamison, her parents-in-law, Jesse and Edna Boone, one 
sister, Ruth, two brothers Herman Joy and Vernard Jamison, one

Alice Marie Robison, 72, passed away October 30, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.

She was born October 5, 1950, in Gainesville, Missouri, the daughter of Edward Andy and Viola Mae Baines Naugle.

A lifetime resident since 1963, she was a nurses aide at Larned 
Healthcare Center. She was a member of New Beginnings Church of the 
Nazarene and enjoyed sewing and crafting.

On October 15, 1970, she married Robert L. Robison Sr. at Larned; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include: daughter, Lisa Robison, Larned; son, Robert 
Robison Jr., Norton; two sisters, Wanda Gay (Don) McKenna, Hutchinson, 
Brenda Louise Farmer, Larned; brother, Joseph (Petra) Naugle, Midwest 
City, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Shyann Robison, Thomas Robison,

Alice Marie Robison

Treva L. McCandless, age 96, passed peacefully on Thursday, October 
27, 2022, at the Palisades at Broadmoor Park in Colorado Springs, 
Colorado with her daughter, son, and daughter-in-law at her side.&nbsp; Treva
 was born on September 29, 1926, in Emporia, Kansas, to Lyman Mallary and 
Arlene Loveland. &nbsp;

After graduating Emporia High School, Treva and three friends 
traveled to Wichita, having been recruited by Being in the War effort. 
She enjoyed telling of her time as a rivet chaser and typist at Boeing.

After Boeing, Treva worked at the Emporia Gazette where William Allen
 White was editor. Working as a proofreader, Treva had a sharp eye for 
errors, which continued through her life.

Treva attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, and it was here where Treva met Robert McCandless, in Composition and Rhetoric class. 
Although Robert turned her down when Treva asked him for a date, he 
later asked her out, saying "do you remember?"

She certainly did. Robert and Treva were married in 1948.&nbsp; After 
marriage, Robert and Treva began farm life in Lebo, Kansas, and farmed 
until 1961, when they purchased the Airliner Motel in Scott City. Treva 
loved living in Scott City and belonging to the United Methodist Church 
where she made many friends in the Women's Society and was active 
helping with dinners and bazaars and attending Sunday School. Treva was 
also active in the High Plains Study Club, enjoying field trips, 
fellowship and coming up with the 'creative answers to be given during 
roll call.

After managing the Airliner Motel for 20 years, Robert and Treva retired in 1981.

They purchased a townhouse in Colorado Springs and took frequent get 
away trips to the mountains. Treva said they had the best of two worlds,
 watching grandchildren grow up in both Kansas and Colorado.

Following Robert's death in 2010, Treva remained in Scott City until 
2016 when she moved to Colorado Springs to be closer to her daughter and
 family. She lived at the Palisades retirement community until her 
passing.

Treva was a fierce Yahtzee player, an avid reader, and Jumble puzzle 
lover. Her more recent days were highlighted by watching Jeopardy and 
she was delighted if family members would sit and watch with her. She 
loved her family, praying for them each night and sharing wisdom with 
them during hard times.

Treva is survived by her son Mark (Suzanne), daughter Kim (Barry): six grandchildren, Leslie (Brad), Marie (Shawn), Laura, Hilary (Jake), Emily (Miles), 
and Thomas; and eight great-grandchildren, Mallory, Nate, Abby, Simon, 
Huxley, Asher, Theo, and Arthur.

Services are pending with Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home.

Patricia “Pat” Lois Bell, 80, passed away on October 26, 2022, in 
Conroe, Texas. Born on June 25, 1942, in Borger, Texas, to Herman 
Delbert and Lois (King) Crockett. They moved back to Morton, Texas, 
where her father became the Cochran County Sheriff. This is where Pat 
attended school until the 7th grade. In 1954 Herman took a job in the oil field and moved the family to Ellinwood, Kansas.&nbsp;

On December 23, 1958, she married Larry Ravenstien, she joined him in
 Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he was stationed in the Army. Upon 
Larry’s Army discharge in 1966, they moved to Derby, Kansas, with their 
two sons. Later moving back to Ellinwood, where Pat worked for Farmer’s 
Mutual Insurance. On October 23, 1978, Larry and her divorced. Pat then 
moved to Great Bend where she worked for the Barton County Sheriff Dept.
 and the Great Bend Petroleum Club. While working at the Petroleum Club,
 she meet Keith Bell, an avid golfer.

Many may remember her singing the jingle “He’s a Write in Vote” 
campaigning for Gene Marks as a write-in vote, running for sheriff of 
Barton County, and he won. She then married Keith Bell on March 14, 
1980, in Cimarron, Kansas. Upon her and Keith’s retirement they became 
“Winter Texans” at River Bend Resort in Brownsville, Texas, later making
 that their permanent home for 23 years.

Mrs. Bell enjoyed playing mahjong, dominos, cards and was active in 
Ladies Golf League. She was very involved in community events at River 
Bend. One important event her friends from River Bend stated was at 
their annual Veterans Day celebration she lead the opening prayer. She 
had a very loving and spiritual caring heart, spreading that to her many
 family and friends along her life’s journey.

Survivors include her sons, Kelly Ravenstien of Ark City, Kansas and 
Scott (Gabe) Ravenstien of Great Bend, Kansas; &nbsp;two step-daughters, 
Rhonda (Gary) Dobbs of Spring, Texas and Marisa (Doug) Deason of Tulsa, 
Oklahoma; one step-son, KB (Tammy) Bell of Great Bend, Kansas; 10 
grandchildren, Justin Ward, Misty (Stephen) Ambrose, Michael (Rosa) 
Ravenstien, Zach Dittrick, Casey Dittrick and fiancé Brian Lundquist, 
Ryan (Nicole) Dobbs, Collin (Madison) Dobbs, Chelsea (Terry) Tansill, 
Suzanne (Mario) Montes and Alisha (Ryan) Markley; 16 
great-grandchildren; 1 great great-grandchild on the way; her sister,

Fay Griffith. He passed peacefully on Friday, October 7th, in Eagle, Idaho,&nbsp; with his family nearby.

Tommy was 88 years old, he leaves behind sons Bryan and Brett, daughter in law, Wendy and granddaughter, Caitlin.

Tommy was born in Delphos, Kansas, received an engineering degree at 
Kansas University and was wedded to Carol Joy Moon, his dedicated wife 
and mother to his two sons for 53 years until her life and fight with 
cancer ended in January of 2021.

Tommy had various engineering jobs throughout his career but was 
determined to further his education and return to school to achieve his 
Masters at New York University followed by his Doctorate at Indiana 
University. &nbsp;He also was a Professor and shared his education and 
knowledge thru teaching at Arizona State University and Fort Hays 
University.

Tommy enjoyed traveling in his younger years, was passionate about 
Kansas University Men’s basketball and had a musical interest for street
 organ grinding. &nbsp;He also had a talent for wood working and even built 
and pieced together his very own street organ that he would take out and
 play for various events and gatherings. &nbsp;Tommy also enjoyed his 
membership in the Hays Rotary club, and as a Mason and loved giving back
 to the community. &nbsp;He was quite clever with his jokes and quotes and 
always kept his audience smiling and laughing.

His sparkling blue eyes and bright warm smile was always rewarding.&nbsp; 
Tommy’s passion for life, his family and interest in others will be 
missed by many.

Lila Riemann

Samuel Louis Brock, 79, of Russell, Kansas, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at his home with his loved ones by his side.

Sam was born September 27, 1943, in Sabetha, Kansas.&nbsp; He was one of three sons born to Dale A. Sr., and Lucille N. (Spiker) Brock.&nbsp; He grew up in Wetmore, Kansas and graduated from Wetmore High School in the Class of '61.&nbsp; He then attended Emporia State University where he graduated in 1965 with his degree in Accounting and Business.&nbsp; He also served his country in the Army National Guard.

Sam was united in marriage to Marcia McCuistion on June 4, 1966.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two daughters; Sonya and Stephanie.&nbsp; Later he was united in marriage to Lana (Teel) Foster on July 10, 1998.&nbsp; They made their home in Russell.

Sam was a Co-Owner of Morris &amp; Brock Accounting which later became Gudenkauf, Malone &amp; Brock, Inc.&nbsp; He retired in 2014.&nbsp; He was an active member of the Russell Elks Lodge # 1715.&nbsp; He enjoyed all aspects of sports, fishing, following his family’s activities and spending time at his cabin at the lake.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia resumed its blockade of Ukrainian ports on Sunday, cutting off urgently needed grain exports to hungry parts of the world in what U.S. President Joe Biden called a “really outrageous” act.

Biden warned that global hunger could increase because of Russia’s suspension of a U.N.-brokered deal to allow safe passage of ships carrying grain from Ukraine, one of the world's breadbaskets.

“It’s really outrageous,” Biden said Saturday in Wilmington, Delaware. “There’s no merit to what they’re doing. The U.N. negotiated that deal and that should be the end of it.”

Biden spoke hours after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-europe-government-and-politics-3b563bd6f79f815c7e9f33505dd25334">Russia announced it would immediately halt participation</a>&nbsp;in the grain deal, alleging that Ukraine staged a drone attack Saturday against Russia’s Black Sea Fleet off the coast of occupied Crimea. Ukraine has denied the attack, saying that Russia mishandled its own weapons.

Ukraine's Infrastructure Ministry reported Sunday that 218 ships involved in grain exports have been blocked — 22 loaded and stuck at ports, 95 loaded and departed from ports, and 101 awaiting inspections.

One of the blocked ships, carrying 40,000 tons of wheat for Ethiopia under a U.N. aid program, could not leave Ukraine on Sunday as a result of Russia’s “blockage of the grain corridor,” Oleksandr Kubrakov, Ukraine’s minister of infrastructure, said on Twitter. The ship, Ikaria Angel, was stuck in the Black Sea port of Chornomorsk.

The Istanbul-based UN center coordinating the ship passages later said the Ikaria Angel was among six vessels that began moving out but hadn't yet entered a humanitarian corridor. The center reported on plans to move and inspect other ships on Monday but it wasn't clear whether Russia would agree.

The grain initiative — an example of rare wartime cooperation between Ukraine and Russia — has allowed more than 9 million tons of grain in 397 ships to safely leave Ukrainian ports since it was signed in July. U.N. chief António Guterres had urged Russia and Ukraine on Friday to renew the deal when it expires Nov. 19. The grain agreement has brought down global food prices about 15% from their peak in March, according to the U.N.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskky expressed outrage at Russia's decision. Referring to the Ikaria Angel, he said in his nightly video address Sunday, “This bulk ship with wheat for the U.N. food program and other vessels with agricultural products are forced to wait, because Russia is blackmailing the world with hunger.”

Two initiatives to revive the grain deal were reported Sunday.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar was in talks with his counterparts to “solve the problem and to continue the grain initiative,” his agency said, adding that no more grain ships would leave Ukraine but those already waiting near Istanbul would be inspected on Sunday or Monday.

At the United Nations in New York, Guterres delayed a trip by a day to engage in talks aimed at ending Russia’s suspension of the grain export deal. Russia also requested a meeting Monday of the U.N. Security Council to discuss the topic.

Analysts say Russia's withdrawal shows that it sees the grain deal as another way to pressure Ukraine.

“By leaving the deal now and putting the blame on Ukraine, it aims to slow Ukrainian attacks around the Black Sea,” said Mario Bikarski, a Economist Intelligence Unit analyst. Russia could be hoping that Ukraine’s Western allies might ask it to focus its forces elsewhere to save the grain deal, he said.

More conflicting details emerged Sunday about the alleged attack on Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

The city council of Mariupol, a Ukrainian port now controlled by Russia, claimed on Telegram that Ukrainian special services had destroyed at least three Russian warships near the city of Sevastopol on the Russian-annexed Crimean Peninsula.

But an adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry claimed that the Russians' “careless handling of explosives” had caused blasts on four Russian warships. Anton Gerashchenko wrote on Telegram that the vessels included a frigate, a landing ship and a ship that carried cruise missiles.

Reports have surfaced for months of Ukrainian sabotage of Russian warplanes and ammunition depots on Crimea and Zelenskky has vowed repeatedly to recapture the strategic Black Sea peninsula that Russia annexed in 2014.

Russia's Defense Ministry claimed Sunday that one Ukrainian drone that reportedly attacked Sevastopol appeared to emanate from a civilian ship carrying agricultural products from Ukraine. The ministry claimed an inspection of the wreckage showed the drones used Canadian-made navigation and their launch point was the Ukrainian coast near the port of Odesa.

Independent verification of each side's claims was not possible.

Ukraine appears to have targeted the Black Sea Fleet and other Russian military infrastructure on Crimea — far from the front lines but a critical launching pad for attacks against Ukraine — since the spring, although it often doesn't confirm its responsibility.

On the battlefront, Russian missile attacks kept pounding key front-line hot spots in Ukraine. The Russians shelled seven Ukrainian regions over the past 24 hours, killing at least five civilians and wounding nine more, Ukraine’s presidential office said.

In the eastern Donetsk region, where the fighting is ongoing near the cities of Bakhmut and Avdiivka, eight cities and villages were shelled.

In areas that Ukraine has recaptured, residents are still recovering bodies of killed civilians, Donetsk Gov. Pavlo Kyrylenko said.

“Over the past 24 hours alone, in three de-occupied towns and villages, we found abandoned bodies of Ukrainian civilians,” Kyrylenko said.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskiy said Sunday that Russian forces were mining territories they leave behind twice as densely as during the first months of the war.

Power outages were reported Sunday in the occupied Ukrainian city of Enerhodar, home to the closed Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe's largest. Ukrainian and Russian officials traded blame for the shelling that caused the blackout.

She was born January 2, 1938, at Great Bend, the daughter of Ray and 
Dorothy (Bailey) Richardson.&nbsp; She attended Dodge City schools and was a 
1955 graduate of Dodge City High School, and in 1954 was the Floor Show 
Queen. On December 27, 1955 she married Kenny Austin at Dodge City.&nbsp; She
 worked as a secretary for the business and finance department of the 
First Christian Church. She was a Keenager senior director for 15 years,
 a bus driver for the Bible Bowl, an Ombudsman for the state of Kansas 
assisting senior citizens in nursing homes, and a CASA volunteer.&nbsp; She 
enjoyed baking cookies for the needy and shut ins as well as baking and 
decorating cakes, Coke hour with the girls, line dancing at the Senior 
Center, cross stitching, collecting dolls, and spending time at their 
cabin in Colorado.&nbsp; 

She was very proud of the fact that she was a 
descendant of Benjamin Franklin.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include: her husband of 66 years, Kenny; their 4 children, 
Brent and wife Dee, Dodge City, Deann Jones, Dodge City, Bruce and wife 
Bonnie, Wichita, and Darin and wife Jackie, Pueblo, Colorado; a sister 
Karen Ehrlich, Surprise, Arizona; 8 grandchildren, Renee Duvall and 
husband Eric, Stephen Austin and wife Sarah, Annalise Hagan and husband 
Joshua, Emily Smith and husband Braden, Joshua Austin and wife Madison, 
Caleb Austin, Jonathan Austin, and Andrew Austin; and 6 great 
grandchildren.

LONDON (AP) — The Broncos offense has stalled all season so expectations were low when a punt left them on their 2-yard line, trailing the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium.

Embattled quarterback Russell Wilson delivered a message in the huddle.

“I told the guys ’hey listen we’re going to go 98 yards right here. Believe in it,” Wilson said. “Every season I've ever played, you’ve got to catch momentum. There’s a moment in time where it clicks.”

Melvin Gordon scored on that drive early in the second half, and Latavius Murray took it in from 2 yards late in the fourth quarter to help the Broncos snap a four-game losing streak by beating the Jaguars 21-17 on Sunday.

Wilson led two go-ahead scoring drives in the second half on his return from a hamstring injury. He finished 18 for 30 for 252 yards with a touchdown and interception.

Wilson looked rusty early, but connected on a 47-yard completion to KJ Hamler after the Broncos fell behind 17-14 on Travis Etienne's 1-yard touchdown run with 3:54 to play. Wilson then scrambled for 10 yards on a third-and-5 to get to the Jacksonville 28.

The late score gave Murray a touchdown for two different teams this month in London. He ran for a score for New Orleans earlier in October at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Broncos (3-5) erased a 10-point deficit on Jerry Jeudy's 6-yard touchdown reception in the first half and Gordon's 1-yard run to complete the 98-yard scoring drive. On the long drive, Wilson connected three times with rookie tight end Greg Dulcich, including a 38-yard completion to the 1. Gordon then ran it in to give the Broncos a 14-10 lead.

Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett, who has come under criticism in his first year on the job, credited Wilson for shaking off the slow start.

“You learn a lot about a quarterback when they throw a pick,” Hackett said. “He got it out of the way early. He was able to rebound and come back.”

The announced attendance of 86,215 is the largest crowd in the history of NFL international games.

The Jaguars (2-6) lost their fifth consecutive game despite a career day from Etienne, who carried 24 times for 156 yards and a touchdown.

Etienne scored on a 1-yard plunge to give Jacksonville a 17-14 lead with 3:54 to play.

After Murray's touchdown with 1:43 remaining, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw an interception to K'Waun Williams at the Jacksonville 35.

Jaguars return specialist Jamal Agnew was inactive for a second week in a row because of a knee injury. Jags safety Rayshawn Jenkins stayed down after tackling Jeudy in second quarter. It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce Donald E. 
Birzer, age 86, of Colby, KS, passed away on October 27, 2022. 
He was born in Brownell, Kansas, on January 23, 1936, to Frank and Eleanor (Rupp) Birzer. 
Don attended Brownell High School, went to the Army from 1954-56, 
stationed in Hanau Germany. After the military, he attended trade school
 for automotive body repair. He was in automotive body repair for over 
40 years and worked and owned Lyles Body shop for 30 years. 
On November 28, 1959, he was united in marriage with Betty Kraft at the 
St. Mary’s Catholic Church in McCracken, KS and from that marriage two 
beautiful living children were born, Mitchell and Staci. 
He was a current member of Sacred Heart Church, Colby, Kansas. After he 
sold Lyles Body Shop, he worked as a Storm Trooper at Farm Bureau for 15
 years and Pioneer Seed for 25 years. He was previously active in the 
American Legion and Knights of Columbus for many years. In his earlier 
years, he enjoyed farming. He was a true handyman/volunteer, enjoyed 
dancing, socializing, playing cards, and had a beautiful lawn and 
garden. 
Don is survived by his son, Mitch (Anita), Nortonville, KY; daughter, 
Staci (Kevin) Murray, Manhattan, KS; four living grandchildren, Justin 
(Allie) Murray, Wichita, KS, Bethany Murray of Wichita, KS, Danielle 
Birzer of Phoenix, AZ, and Jackson Birzer of Nortonville, KY and two 
great grandchildren, Hudson Murray and Cohen Murray. He will be truly 
missed by all that knew him. 
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty (Kraft); his daughter, 
Roxanne; his parents, Frank and Eleanor Birzer; three sisters, and a 
granddaughter, Ashley Murray. 
Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m., with a vigil at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Nov.
 3, 2022, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. A funeral mass will be celebrated
 on Friday, Nov 4, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church,

Some of the most dramatic images in World Series history are 
ingrained in the minds of baseball fans thanks to television coverage. 
This year’s World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston 
Astros will surely bring another timeless highlight to the <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/03/2021-world-series-ratings-braves-astros-game-6-draws-14point3-million.html">12 million or so viewers</a> expected to watch.

Yet the first 43 World Series weren’t televised at all. It wasn’t 
until the 1947 series between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers –
 75 years ago – that fans could watch their favorite players duke it out
 on screen. 

As I detail in my book “<a href="https://www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/bison-original/9780803248250/">Center Field Shot: A History of Baseball on Television</a>,”
 which I co-authored with Robert Bellamy, the telecasts became a 
sensation. They drew millions of Americans to a new medium at a time 
when there were no national networks, only a handful of stations and 
somewhere between 50,000 and 60,000 TVs in the entire country.

In August 1947, the television industry anticipated a possible 
all-New York World Series: The Yankees had a huge lead in the American 
League, while the Dodgers also held a substantial one in the National 
League.  

If the two teams met in October, New York’s three television stations – run by NBC ABC, and the now-extinct <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/DuMont-Television-Network">DuMont</a> – decided they wanted to cover the games.

But the rights to televise the games were held by the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Mutual-Broadcasting-System">Mutual Broadcasting System</a>,
 a radio network that had no television division. Thus, Mutual would 
need to farm out the coverage to one or more New York stations.

Although no national television network existed at the time, NBC, 
DuMont and CBS did have the means to link stations on the Eastern 
Seaboard through a combination of coaxial cable, microwave and 
over-the-air broadcast transmissions, expanding the potential audience 
for the World Series. The Series would air on eight stations in four 
markets: New York City, Philadelphia, Washington and Schenectady, New 
York.

While the Yankees-Dodgers series materialized, the televising of the Series almost didn’t. 

The predictable stumbling block was money. Baseball commissioner <a href="https://baseballhall.org/hall-of-famers/chandler-happy">Albert B. “Happy” Chandler</a>
 wanted $100,000 for the television rights to the Series. Gillette, the 
sponsor of the radio coverage on the Mutual Broadcasting System, balked 
at the steep price given television’s limited penetration – only 50,000 
to 60,000 U.S. households owned TVs at the time. The radio rights to 
reach the nation’s 29 million homes with radios had cost Mutual only 
$175,000.

$175,000. Initial negotiations produced an offer of $60,000 from two sponsors: Gillette and the Ford Motor Company. New York’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Liebmann">Liebmann Breweries</a>
 offered to meet Chandler’s $100,000 demand, but the commissioner 
refused because he did not want beer ads when youngsters would be 
prominent members of the audience.Even before a coverage deal had been finalized, bars, restaurants, 
television dealers, department stores, automobile dealerships and movie 
theaters started advertising the event, urging customers to come by to 
watch the World Series on television. And in the days and weeks leading 
up to the Fall Classic, the demand for television sets spiked. The excitement pressured Chandler and the sponsors to reach a compromise. Finally, on Sept. 26, just four days before Game 1 at Yankee Stadium, Chandler, Gillette and Ford <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-BC/BC-1947/1947-10-06-BC.pdf">agreed to $65,000 for the rights to televise the World Series</a>.
 Production costs added another $35,000 to the sponsors’ bill. Mutual, 
Gillette and Ford also agreed to allow all three New York TV stations 
and those connected to them to broadcast the game, providing the widest 
possible exposure.<h2>An unexpectedly strong response</h2>Initial industry estimates had the Series reaching between 600,000 
and 700,000 viewers, many of them located in the bars and restaurants 
where a substantial number of the nation’s first television receivers 
were located. But that forecast ended up being conservative. Although home viewing for the seven games was substantial – 450,000 in a <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-18.pdf">Hooper rating survey commissioned by Billboard</a>
 – the out-of-home viewing numbers were extraordinary: Another 3.5 
million were estimated to have viewed the World Series in public 
locales. Hooper’s survey found that an average of 82 customers showed up at 
each of these public locations to watch at least some of the World 
Series. Variety reported that bar owners saw a 500% increase in patrons 
during the Series, with some offering reservations to their regulars for
 a choice location near the TV set.What viewers from those choice seats saw was primitive by today’s 
standards. The screen was usually small – 12 diagonal inches or less. 
The low-definition images were black and white and came from just a few 
cameras. No extreme close-ups were possible. There was no instant 
replay, so fans had to pay attention or the moment was lost. But for the first time, they were seeing the World Series live, and for free.<h2>The TV industry’s World Series bump</h2>The audience liked what they saw. <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-11.pdf">Billboard</a>,
 quoting The Newark Evening News, reported that TV “audiences hung on 
every turn of the video cameras and the ‘oohs and aahs’ at a slide or 
strikeout were something radio broadcasters would give their eye teeth 
to hear.” It didn’t hurt that <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/1947_WS.shtml">the 1947 World Series</a> ended up being so dramatic. The Yankees prevailed in seven games, but Brooklyn owned the two greatest moments.In the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4, Dodgers pitch hitter <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWjpOAy5zCM">Cookie Lavagetto ended Yankee starter Bill Biven’s no-hit bid</a> with a two-out hit, driving in two runs and sending the Dodgers to a 3-2 win. Then, in Game 6, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SrtxVs8uMI">Al Gionfriddo’s stunning catch of Joe DiMaggio’s deep drive to left field</a> helped preserve an 8-6 Dodgers victory, leading legendary Dodgers broadcaster <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Red_Barber.html?id=lWhgEAAAQBAJ">Red Barber</a> to exclaim, “Oh, Doctor!”<figure>

President Harry S. Truman, his staff and the D.C. press corps watched 
some of the contests. The <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Televiser/Televiser-1947-09-10.pdf">industry magazine Televiser</a>
 reported an enthusiastic response from the White House viewers: “If TV 
can do as good a job as that on perhaps the most difficult of all 
subjects to televise, then it really has arrived.” The public’s embrace of the World Series on television, along with 
the generous coverage of the telecasts by the press, provided an 
important boost to the nascent television industry. The Sporting News 
reported that the first televised World Series increased sales for new 
receivers in New York to levels not seen since the early days of radio. 
Similar reports came from dealers in Washington and Philadelphia.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Sarnoff">David Sarnoff</a>,
 chairman of RCA – which owed NBC and was a leading manufacturer of 
receivers – regarded television’s coverage of baseball and its crowning 
event, the World Series, as one of the most important factors in 
triggering the growth of the new medium. Television makers, <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Center_Field_Shot.html?id=6kPQhpS-X8YC">he concluded</a>,
 “had to have baseball games and if [baseball owners] had demanded 
millions for the rights, we would have had to give it to them.” The television industry eventually did pay millions and then billions for those rights. <a href="https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Daily/Issues/2018/11/15/Media/MLB-Fox.aspx">Fox’s latest seven-year contract</a>, including rights to the World Series, pays Major League Baseball $5.1 billion. Happy Chandler’s 1947 demand for a $100,000 seems like quite a bargain today.James Walker is
