Kip Michael Boomhower, 58, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, November 14, 2022, at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

Kip was born October 14, 1964, in Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp; He was one of three children to Gerald and Virginia (Tauscher) Boomhower.&nbsp; He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School.

Kip was united in marriage to Kathy Curtis on May 12, 1990, in Hudson, Kansas.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children; Bailey, Jesse and Wyatt.&nbsp; They made their home in Russell.

Kip was a Rancher most all of his life in Russell.&nbsp; He was a member of the American Paint Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Association, and the Red Angus Association.&nbsp; He was a 4-H leader when his children were involved with 4-H.

Kip’s surviving family include his wife, Kathy of Russell, Kansas; daughter, Bailey Boomhower (Mitch) of Phillipsburg, Kansas; sons, Jesse Boomhower (Kelli) of Russell, Kansas and Wyatt Boomhower (Keena) of Ashland, Kansas; mother, Virginia Boomhower of Russell, Kansas; sisters, Lisa Moubry (Brian) of Bunker Hill, Kansas and Denise VanDegrift (Tom) of Luray, Kansas; and a grandchild, Avery Boomhower.

Kip was preceded in death by his father and infant daughter Valerie Boomhower.

A Greeting will be held from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday, November 21, 2022, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, where the family will be present to greet friends.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Monday at the mortuary.&nbsp; 

A Memorial has been established with the Russell Community Thanksgiving Dinner.&nbsp; Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

BBB is warning Facebook users that sharing a certain kind of 
attention-grabbing post might put their friends at risk of falling 
victim to a scam.

You
 are scrolling through Facebook, and a gut-wrenching post about an 
injured, lost pet or a missing child grabs your attention. You want to 
help, so you share the post on your own profile.

After you share the post, a scammer 
changes the original post to a deceptive rental ad or sometimes to a 
link pointing to a survey that "guarantees" a cash prize. Now, your 
friends think you have recommended that content. These bait-and-switch 
ads aim to either get a deposit for a rental property before the user 
gets a chance to see the home- or get your personal information, which 
could lead to identity theft.

This scheme has many variations, but 
the commonality is the emotionality or urgency of the message that 
encourages concerned people to share the news with their friends.&nbsp;

We have seen multiple variations of these shared on local buy-and-sell Facebook groups across Canada and the U.S. <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2022/10/20/fact-check-identical-injured-dog-posts-viral-scam/10480235002/" target="_blank">USA Today</a>&nbsp;also reported about it in October.

These posts are shared in local 
buy-and-sell groups because there is already a sense of community and 
trust within these crowds, and people may not realize that scammers are 
targeting members. Scammers sometimes also turn comments off on the 
posts so other group members can't oust them.&nbsp;

child goes missing or a tragedy occurs, you'll most likely see it on 
different news outlets or shared by law enforcement, not on a random 
post.&nbsp;</li><li>Do a reverse image search on Google. That will allow you to find out if the pictures you saw were used on other ads or websites in different cities.&nbsp;</li><li>Find similar posts. Copy and paste 
the text from the post into Facebook's search tool to see if other posts

Facebook alert: Local buy-and-sell group scams on the rise

Robert Yarmer, 64, died November 16, 2022. He&nbsp;was born to&nbsp;Vernon&nbsp;and Arlene (Stoss)&nbsp;Yarmer on July 5, 1958. He grew up on a farm in rural Russell County near Galatia.

He attended St. Ann’s Catholic Elementary School&nbsp;through the 8th&nbsp;grade. &nbsp;Then&nbsp;graduated with the class of 1977 from Russell High School.

He married the love of his life, Valerie Brummer on October 10th, 1981. Together they raised their four children;&nbsp;Megan, Devan, Andrea, &amp; Audra on their farm&nbsp;in southwest Russell County. &nbsp;He loved spending time with his children,&nbsp;hunting, fishing, working with horses, dancing,&nbsp;and playing cards.

Robert was a rancher and farmer his whole life. When&nbsp;he was younger he enjoyed hunting&nbsp;and farming with his Grandpa. &nbsp;As the years passed Robert worked hard to grow the family farm. &nbsp;If he wasn’t at the farm, he was&nbsp;working at the sale barn or selling seed.&nbsp;Later,&nbsp;he helped Devan on the farm by watching&nbsp;on-line&nbsp;auctions and bull sales for him.&nbsp;

Building relationships with people was one thing he did best. Robert had a heart of gold and was always willing to help a neighbor.&nbsp;He didn’t know a stranger and had the personality to talk&nbsp;with anyone. &nbsp;He loved entertaining everyone&nbsp;with a story and&nbsp;a joke and would often leave them smiling ear to ear.&nbsp;Robert had a&nbsp;huge heart&nbsp;and was very giving. He would often makegifts in his free time&nbsp;from horseshoes and wood.&nbsp;

Something Robert enjoyed most of all&nbsp;was being with family. &nbsp;He loved&nbsp;taking his grandkids on wheelchair rides,&nbsp;teaching them how to play checkers, and telling stories&nbsp;especially of hunting and fishing. &nbsp;Robert&nbsp;also&nbsp;loved driving around looking at crops and cattle.

Robert was a member&nbsp;at&nbsp;St. Ann Catholic Church,&nbsp;Olmitz&nbsp;Knights&nbsp;of Columbus Council #2100, Russell County Farm Bureau, and a past trustee&nbsp;of the Winterset Township Board.

He is survived by his&nbsp;mother, Arlene Yarmer of Russell;&nbsp;wife, Valerie of the home, and four children, Megan (Jared) Herl of Hays, Devan (Meggy) Yarmer of Russell, Andrea (Greg) Wertz of Bedford, Pennsylvania, and Audra (Cory)&nbsp;Brown&nbsp;of Oakley;&nbsp;nine grandchildren, Saige, Wyatt, and Maverick Herl, Troy&nbsp;and Trent Yarmer, Augustus and Catherina Wertz, and Ava and Colter Brown;&nbsp;sisters, Rhonda (John) Glassman of Russell, Rebecca (Allen) Cameron of Grant City, Missouri, Rochelle (Curtis) Kuhn of Victoria,&nbsp;a brother, Verlin&nbsp;(Susanne) Yarmer of Russell;&nbsp;and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Vernon Yarmer.

Visitation will be&nbsp;12 noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, November 19th, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. On&nbsp;Sunday, November 20th, 2022,&nbsp;there will be visitation&nbsp;at St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz, Kansas from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a&nbsp;Vigil&nbsp;and&nbsp;Knights of Columbus Rosary beginning at 6 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Monday, November 21st, 2022, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz, Kansas, celebrated by Father Jacob Schneider. &nbsp;Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery.

Robert Yarmer

Josephine “Jo” Marie (Goodnough) Yakich,&nbsp;95 years young, residing in 
Westminster, Colorado, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday,
 November 2, 2022, at her home, Keystone Place at Legacy Ridge.

Jo was born in Bennington, Kansas,&nbsp;to&nbsp;Edward and Frances Goodnough on
 October 6, 1927.&nbsp; She attended high school in Hays, Kansas, graduated 
in 1945 with a music scholarship to Fort Hays Kansas State University. 
&nbsp;She went on to earn a college degree, majoring in music, from Fort Hays
 State University. &nbsp;This was a remarkable accomplishment for a young 
woman in 1949.&nbsp; That was not enough for Jo as shortly thereafter, she 
moved to the big city of Denver, Colorado where she began work as a 
receptionist at the University of Denver.&nbsp; During her early years in 
Denver, she was the First Oboist in the Denver Community Symphony (later
 the Denver Philharmonic), conducted by Dr. Antonio Brico, the first 
woman to conduct the New York Philharmonic. &nbsp;

Though music was her passion, Jo was also an exercise enthusiast 
(until she was 93!); and she enjoyed tennis, bicycling, volleyball, and 
softball.&nbsp; She met Eli Yakich Jr. at the boarding house where they both 
lived, and they married on Christmas Eve in 1950.&nbsp; They settled in 
Aurora, Colorado and Jo became an organist at St. Therese Church.&nbsp; For 
the next 40+ years, she accompanied Sunday mass (and the choir), as well
 as funerals and weddings for parishioners.&nbsp; During those years, Jo 
taught piano out of her home and was a substitute teacher while raising 
her four children.&nbsp; She continued to teach and give piano lessons for 
the next 15 years.&nbsp; After she let the school system Jo worked fulltime 
at a bank for a couple of years before joining the Aurora Municipal 
Court as a court reporter. Jo would work for the Court for 13 years 
before retiring.&nbsp;

Jo and Eli retired to Salida, Colorado, and Jo became an organist and
 choir member of St. Joseph Catholic Church there.&nbsp; All who had the 
privilege of knowing Jo would use the same three words to describe her –
 sweet, genuine and kind.&nbsp; Jo affected many lives in her 95 years, but 
none more so than her loving family who will miss her always and love 
her forever.&nbsp;

Jo&nbsp;was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Eli 
Yakich Jr.; her sister, Frances Rankin; her brother William McKinley; 
and her sister Eldora Verberg.&nbsp; Jo is survived by her children (Debra 
Yakich Montgomery of Parker, CO; David Yakich and wife Carrie of Arvada,
 Colorado; Diane Yakich Simondi and her husband Rudy of Golden Valley, 
MN; and Danell Yakich of St. Louis Park, MN); her two granddaughters 
(Sarah Yakich of Westminster, CO and Ali Yakich of Denver, CO); her 
niece, Lynn Kelly of Santa Fe, NM; and her nephew, Dennis McKinley of 
Buena Vista CO.

Services were Nov. 15 and in the care of the Archdiocese of Denver Catholica Funeral &amp; Cemetery Services.

Josephine 'Jo' Yakich

Robert “Bob” Eugene Harris, 85, passed away peacefully November 12, 
2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; He was born April 27, 1937, in 
Great Bend, KS, to John Francis Harris and Thelma Mae (Foreman) Harris.

Bob was a 1955 graduate of Great Bend High School.&nbsp; He attended 
Kansas State University for two years where he was a member of the Sigma
 Phi Epsilon fraternity. &nbsp; He then transferred to Fort Hays State 
University where he majored in Biology graduating&nbsp;in 1959.&nbsp; Bob began 
his teaching career in Stafford, KS, where he taught General Science and
 coached football, basketball, and track in the junior high school for 
three years.&nbsp; From 1961 to 1967, he taught science and coached at Marie 
L. Hare Intermediate School in Garden Grove, CA.&nbsp; From 1968 to 1981, Bob
 taught Biology, Zoology, and coached football and swimming at 
Hutchinson High School.&nbsp; In 1980, he began working as an insurance agent
 for Ozark National Life &amp; N.I.S. Financial Services.&nbsp; He retired in
 2020 at the age of 83.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bob was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ.&nbsp; In his many years
 at Eastwood, he taught Bible classes, led singing, served communion, 
and was head of the missionary program.&nbsp; He was frequently found talking
 to others about Christ whom he loved beyond measure.&nbsp; He definitely 
epitomized a life of servitude.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Throughout his life, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf.&nbsp;
 Bob was an avid sports fan who followed the Kansas City Chiefs, the 
Kansas State University Wildcats, and the University of Kansas Jayhawks.

On October 31, 1958, he married the love of his life, Sandra Kay 
Cooper, in Great Bend, KS.&nbsp; They shared over 64 years of marriage, 3 
children, 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Bob is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Sandra of Hutchinson; children, Dan 
(Mitzi) Harris of Flower Mound, TX, Kim (Joe) Horsch of Goddard, KS, and
 Shelly (Darren) Watson of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Josh Hoefler, 
Jordan (Vanessa Jones) Hoefler, Chloe Harris, Kylie (fiancé, Zach 
Norton) Horsch, Jake (Makala) Horsch, Madison Harris, Logan Watson, Sean
 Harris, and Lucas Watson; great-grandchildren, Kannon Hoefler, Kyler

Kansas State University for two years where he was a member of the Sigma
 Phi Epsilon fraternity. &nbsp; He then transferred to Fort Hays State 
University where he majored in Biology graduating&nbsp;in 1959.&nbsp; Bob began 
his teaching career in Stafford, KS, where he taught General Science and
 coached football, basketball, and track in the junior high school for 
three years.&nbsp; From 1961 to 1967, he taught science and coached at Marie 
L. Hare Intermediate School in Garden Grove, CA.&nbsp; From 1968 to 1981, Bob
 taught Biology, Zoology, and coached football and swimming at 
Hutchinson High School.&nbsp; In 1980, he began working as an insurance agent
 for Ozark National Life &amp; N.I.S. Financial Services.&nbsp; He retired in
 2020 at the age of 83.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bob was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ.&nbsp; In his many years
 at Eastwood, he taught Bible classes, led singing, served communion, 
and was head of the missionary program.&nbsp; He was frequently found talking
 to others about Christ whom he loved beyond measure.&nbsp; He definitely 
epitomized a life of servitude.&nbsp;&nbsp;Throughout his life, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf.&nbsp;
 Bob was an avid sports fan who followed the Kansas City Chiefs, the 
Kansas State University Wildcats, and the University of Kansas Jayhawks.On October 31, 1958, he married the love of his life, Sandra Kay 
Cooper, in Great Bend, KS.&nbsp; They shared over 64 years of marriage, 3 
children, 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.Bob is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Sandra of Hutchinson; children, Dan

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the Biden administration to lift Trump-era asylum restrictions that have been a cornerstone of border enforcement since the beginning of COVID-19.

U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan ruled in Washington that enforcement must end immediately for families and single adults, calling the ban “arbitrary and capricious.” The administration has not applied it to children traveling alone.

Within hours, the Justice Department asked the judge to let the order take effect Dec. 21, giving it five weeks to prepare. Plaintiffs including the American Civil Liberties Union didn't oppose the delay.

“This transition period is critical to ensuring that (the Department of Homeland Security) can continue to carry out its mission to secure the Nation’s borders and to conduct its border operations in an orderly fashion,” government attorneys wrote.

Sullivan, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton, wrote in a 49-page ruling that authorities failed to consider the impact on migrants and possible alternatives.

The ruling appears to conflict with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/covid-health-government-and-politics-mexico-texas-43976f307da98b3e800f884e87f244fe">another in May</a>&nbsp;by a federal judge in Louisiana that kept the asylum restrictions.

If Sullivan's ruling stands, it would upend border enforcement. Migrants have been expelled from the United States more than 2.4 million times since the rule took effect in March 2020, denying migrants rights to seek asylum under U.S. and international law on grounds of preventing the spread of COVID-19.

The practice was authorized under Title 42 of a broader 1944 law covering public health.

Before the judge in Louisiana kept the ban in place in May, U.S. officials said they were planning for as many as 18,000 migrants a day under the most challenging scenario, a staggering number. In May, migrants were stopped an average of 7,800 times a day, the highest of Joe Biden's presidency.

Immigration advocacy groups have pressed hard to end Title 42, but more moderate Democrats, including U.S. Sens. Mark Kelly of Arizona and Raphael Warnock of Georgia, wanted it to stay when the administration tried to lift it in May.

The ban has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-covid-health-yuma-immigration-128e7440b334cc8fcbd3a629b78c3879">unevenly enforced</a>&nbsp;by nationality, falling largely on migrants from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador — in addition to Mexicans — because Mexico allows them to be returned from the United States. Last month, Mexico began accepting Venezuelans who are expelled from the United States under Title 42, causing a sharp drop in Venezuelans seeking asylum at the U.S. border.

Nationalities that are less likely to be subject to Title 42 have become a growing presence at the border, confident they will be released in the United States to pursue their immigration cases.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-health-colombia-caribbean-cuba-ec7a393f0e9e4bf5b8890a85c615b342">In October,</a>&nbsp;Cubans were the second-largest nationality at the border after Mexicans, followed by Venezuelans and Nicaraguans.

The Homeland Security Department said it would use the next five weeks to “prepare for an orderly transition to new policies at the border.”

"We continue to work with countries throughout the Western Hemisphere to take enforcement actions against the smuggling networks that entice migrants to take the dangerous and often deadly journey to our land borders and to address the root causes of irregular migration that are challenging our hemisphere as a whole,” the department said.

ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt said Sullivan's decision renders the Louisiana ruling moot.

“This is an enormous victory for desperate asylum seekers who have been barred from even getting a hearing because of the misuse of public laws," Gelernt said. "This ruling hopefully puts an end to this horrendous period in U.S. history in which we abandoned our solemn commitment to provide refuge to those facing persecution.”

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy counsel for the American Immigration Council, an immigrant advocacy group, distinguished Sullivan's ruling from the one by U.S. District Judge Robert Summerhays in Louisiana, an appointee of President Donald Trump, which applied only to how the Biden administration tried to end Title 42. Sullivan found the entire rule invalid.

Migrant explosion fears as judge blocks asylum restrictions

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Former President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;said Tuesday that he will mount a third White House campaign, launching an early start to the 2024 contest. The announcement comes just a week after an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-donald-trump-00c770068d8b82f165a9f4871eee983b">underwhelming midterm showing for Republicans</a>&nbsp;and will force the party to decide whether to embrace a candidate whose refusal to accept defeat in 2020&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">pushed American democracy to the brink.</a>

“I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump said to an audience of several hundred supporters, club members and gathered press in a chandeliered ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago club, where he stood flanked by more than 30 American flags and banners that read, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Trump enters the race in a moment of political vulnerability. He hoped to launch his campaign in the wake of resounding GOP midterm victories, fueled by candidates he elevated during this year’s primaries. Instead, many of those candidates lost, allowing Democrats to keep the Senate and leaving the GOP with a path to only a bare majority in the House.

Far from the undisputed leader of the party, Trump is now facing criticism from some of his own allies, who say it’s time for Republicans to look to the future, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis emerging as an early favorite White House contender.

The former president is still popular with the GOP base. But other Republicans, including former Vice President Mike Pence, are taking increasingly public steps toward campaigns of their own, raising the prospect that Trump will have to navigate a competitive GOP primary.

He’s launching his candidacy amid a series of escalating criminal investigations, including several that could lead to indictments. They include the probe into dozens of documents with classified markings that were seized by the FBI from Mar-a-Lago and ongoing state and federal inquiries into his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Another campaign is a remarkable turn for any former president, much less one who made history as the first to be impeached twice and whose term ended with his supporters violently storming the Capitol in a deadly bid to halt the peaceful transition of power on Jan. 6, 2021.

But Trump, according to people close to him, has been eager to return to politics and try to halt the rise of other potential challengers. Aides have spent the last months readying paperwork, identifying potential staff and sketching out the contours of a campaign that is being modeled on his 2016 operation, when a small clutch of aides zipping between rallies on his private jet defied the odds and defeated far better-funded and more experienced rivals by tapping into deep political fault lines and using shocking statements to drive relentless media attention.

Even after GOP losses, Trump remains the most powerful force in his party. For years he has consistently topped his fellow Republican contenders by wide margins in hypothetical head-to-head matchups. And even out of office, he consistently attracts thousands to his rallies and remains his party’s most prolific fundraiser, raising hundreds of millions of dollars.

But Trump is also a deeply polarizing figure. Fifty-four percent of voters in last week’s midterm elections viewed him very or somewhat unfavorably, according to AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 94,000 voters nationwide. And an October AP-NORC poll found even Republicans have their reservations about him remaining the party’s standard-bearer, with 43% saying they don’t want to see him run for president in 2024.

Trump’s candidacy poses profound questions about America’s democratic future. The final days of his presidency were consumed by a desperate effort to stay in power, undermining the centuries-old tradition of a peaceful transfer. And in the two years since he lost, Trump’s persistent — and baseless — lies about widespread election fraud have eroded confidence in the nation’s political process. By late January 2021, about two-thirds of Republicans said they did not believe President Joe Biden was legitimately elected in 2020, an AP-NORC poll found.

VoteCast showed roughly as many Republican voters in the midterm elections continued to hold that belief.

Federal and state election officials and Trump’s own attorney general have said there is no credible evidence the 2020 election was tainted. The former president’s allegations of fraud were also roundly rejected by numerous courts, including by judges Trump appointed.

But that didn’t stop hundreds of midterm candidates from parroting his lies as they sought to win over his loyal base and score his coveted endorsement. In the end, many of those candidates went on to lose their races in a sign that voters rejected such extreme rhetoric.

While some Republicans with presidential ambitions, like former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, have long ruled out running against Trump, others have said he would not figure into their decisions, even before his midterm losses.

They include Pence, who released a book Tuesday, and Trump’s former secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, as well as former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who ran against Trump in 2016. Other potential candidates include Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin. Trump is also likely to face challenges from members of the anti-Trump wing of the party like Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, vice chair of the House committee that has been investigating Jan. 6.

But the person who has most occupied Trump and his allies in recent months is DeSantis, whose commanding reelection as governor last week was a bright spot for Republicans this cycle. The former congressman, who became a popular national figure among conservatives during the pandemic as he pushed back on COVID-19 restrictions, shares Trump’s pugilistic instincts and has embraced fights over social issues with similar zeal.

Even some enthusiastic Trump supporters say they are eager for DeSantis to run, seeing him as a natural successor to Trump but without the former president’s considerable baggage.

Trump has already begun to lash out at DeSantis publicly. On Tuesday, the Florida governor shot back.

“At the end of the day, I would just tell people to go check out the scoreboard from last Tuesday night,” DeSantis told reporters.

A crowded field of GOP rivals could ultimately play to Trump’s advantage, as it did in 2016, when he prevailed over more than a dozen other candidates who splintered the anti-Trump vote.

Trump’s decision paves the way for a potential rematch with Biden, who has said he intends to run for reelection despite concerns from some in his party over his age and low approval ratings. The two men were already the oldest presidential nominees ever when they ran in 2020. Trump, who is 76, would be 82 at the end of a second term in 2029. Biden, who is about to turn 80, would be 86.

If he is ultimately successful, Trump would be just the second U.S. president in history to serve two nonconsecutive terms, following Grover Cleveland’s wins in 1884 and 1892.

But Trump enters the race facing enormous challenges beyond his party’s growing trepidations. The former president is the subject of numerous investigations, including the monthslong probe into the hundreds of documents with classified markings found in boxes at Mar-a-Lago.

Meanwhile, Trump is facing Justice Department scrutiny over efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. In Georgia, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is investigating what she alleges was “a multi-state, coordinated plan by the Trump Campaign” to influence the 2020 results.

And in New York, Attorney General Letitia James has sued Trump, alleging his namesake company engaged in decades’ worth of fraudulent bookkeeping by misleading banks about the value of his assets. The Trump Organization is also now on trial, facing criminal tax fraud charges.

Some in Trump’s orbit believe that running will help shield him against potential indictment, but there is no legal statute that would prevent the Justice Department from moving forward — or prevent Trump from continuing to run if he is charged.

It wasn’t any secret what he had been planning.

At a White House Christmas party in December 2020, Trump told guests it had “been an amazing four years.”

“We are trying to do another four years,” he said. “Otherwise, I’ll see you in four years.”

Hays USD 489&nbsp; has set a community input meeting to discuss its rebranding process.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the 12th Street Auditorium.

The rebranding is being done ahead of several bond projects, including the construction of a new high school and renovation of the current high school into a new middle school.

Superintendent Ron Wilson said after a recent school board meeting it was never the intent of district administration to change the high school mascot.

Rebranding considerations could include colors, fonts or logos. However, no decisions have been made to make any changes at this point.

A survey has been mailed to district parents and has been made available on request to members of the community or those with ties to the Hays district, including alumni.

Those who wish to submit feedback through the survey and have not yet received a form can request one by sending an email to Chrisy Crough, district public relations director, at c.crough@usd489. com.

After the meeting on Nov. 15, the feedback from that meeting and the survey responses will be reviewed by a rebranding committee.

That committee has yet to be formed. Four board members have asked to be on the committee, including Allen Park, Curt Vajnar, Ken Brooks and Meagan Zampieri-Lillpopp.

She said she was very emotional about the rebranding. She said she had many questions and wanted to make sure the school district was transparent about the rebranding process.

Meeting on Hays high, middle school rebranding is Tuesday

Patricia A. “Pat” (McKenna) Hartzog, of Hoxie, KS, passed away on November 14, 2022, at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, KS, at the age of 85. 

She was born on October 29, 1937, to Theodore and Ruby (Rolland) McKenna in&nbsp;Oberlin, Kansas.&nbsp;She married Lloyd Krizek,&nbsp;and after he passed away&nbsp;on March 21, 1957,&nbsp;she married Earl Hartzog on April 20, 1958. She&nbsp;was&nbsp;blessed with 3 children:&nbsp;Mike,&nbsp;Virginia, and&nbsp;Harold.&nbsp;

Pat graduated from Jennings High School in 1956.&nbsp;She&nbsp;kept busy raising her children and later, Grandma Pat’s Daycare. She loved&nbsp;kids – everybody’s kids, and especially her family. She enjoyed working in her garden and giving away the fruits of her labor, oftentimes in the form of the jellies she made&nbsp;and her famous chocolate chip cookies. She very&nbsp;much&nbsp;loved&nbsp;traveling with Earl. She was an active&nbsp;member of the Christ Community Church.&nbsp;

Pat is survived by her children:&nbsp;Virginia Fullbright (Irlan) of Ellinwood,&nbsp;KS&nbsp;and&nbsp;Harold Hartzog of Hoxie; sister, Donna Chambers of McCook, NE; sister-in-law, Gloria McKenna of Colby, KS; 3 grandchildren: Brad Fullbright (Jodi), Cody Holzmeister (Christie), and&nbsp;Megan&nbsp;Jacques (Ryan); and 6 great-grandchildren: Kolton&nbsp;and Carli&nbsp;Fullbright, Kaylynn Holzmeister, Gabe,&nbsp;Rhythm and Ranger Jacques.&nbsp;

Crude prices are holding steady, despite some ups and downs within a ten dollar trading range. Futures prices jumped two and a half dollars on Friday to settle at $88.96 per barrel in New York. By lunchtime Monday those prices were down two and a half dollars. WTI in New York was trading over $86. London Brent was over $94 per barrel.&nbsp; Kansas prices are down from a week ago, but up from the first of the month. Kansas Common crude started the week at $79.25 per barrel after gaining $2.50 on Friday. But on Monday, CHS in McPherson dropped its price to $76 per barrel. Oilfield activity in Kansas remains about 50% ahead of last year. So far this year, 247 operators have spudded 1,372 wells. Total footage drilled is estimated at 3.8 million feet compared to 2.8 million feet a year ago. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service is scouting 522 wells current in various stages of drilling and completion. The Kansas Rig Count east of Wichita was up two at 19 active rigs. Western Kansas dropped by three to 30 rigs either scheduled, moving to, or currently on drill sites. Operators were drilling one well and about to spud another in Ellis County on Friday. Kansas regulators gave the green light to 36 new drilling locations across the state, with 12 in eastern Kansas and 24 west of Wichita, including two in Barton county and one in Ellis County. That's 1,436 new drilling permits so far this year, compared to 991 a year ago. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports 40 new well-completions in the week through November 10th. That's 1,398 completed wells so far this year, compared to 778 by this time last year. There are two wells in Barton County, one in Ellis County, and two in Russell County among the 28 wells completed in Western Kansas last week. Baker Hughes reported 779 active rotary drilling rigs across the U.S. Friday, an increase of nine oil rigs. The count in Louisiana was up six rigs; Texas gained four. The Energy Information Administration reports a big increase in U.S. crude-oil inventories for the week through November 4th. Stockpiles increased nearly four million barrels, after dropping by three million barrels the week before. EIA says domestic inventories are about three percent below the five-year average for this time of year. Gasoline inventories dropped by nearly a million barrels, and are about six percent below the five year average. Diesel Stockpiles dropped by half a million barrels last week and remain about 17% below the five-year seasonal average. U.S. crude-oil production increased by 200,000 barrels per day last week, once again rising above 12 million barrels per day. U.S. oil-by-rail traffic is up three percent over last year. The Association of American Railroads reports 10,323 carloads, up 201 tankers from a week ago and a 3.3% increase over the same week last year. Canadian traffic is down 500 carloads for the week and 8.6% lower than last year. Diesel prices remain at near-record highs while inventories hold steady at historic lows. A report from the Energy Information Administration cites the benchmark New York Harbor spot prices for ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel. In October, that price averaged $4.36 per gallon, the highest monthly average prices since May of 2022 and the second-highest monthly average on record. Increasing demand and reduced production of diesel fuel contribute to this, but the report primarily blames low inventories both in the U.S. and around the world. U.S. inventories of distillate fuel oil have been below the five-year low since January. Total U.S. diesel inventories have been below the five-year low and more than 20% below the five-year average since April.&nbsp; Another barometer used by analysts is the so-called "crack spread," the difference between the price of crude and the equivalent amount of diesel fuel. October's crack spread marked an all-time high at $2.14 per gallon in October, compared to $1.61/gallon in October last year.&nbsp; Russia has started swapping oil products with Iran, the latest sign of deepening ties between the two sanctioned countries pushed closer by Russia’s war in Ukraine. Bloomberg cites an Interfax report attributed to the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, who said the range of swapped products will be expanded. The news came after a meeting with Iran's Oil Minister. The talks also covered potential Russian participation to increase Iran's oil production, the development of ports, and an international north-south freight corridor connecting Russia to India via Iran. Saudi Arabia has established a carbon-capture sequestration center, as the state oil giant seeks to reach its goal of net-zero emissions by the year 2060.&nbsp; The center will be located on the east coast of Saudi Arabia. Bloomberg reports the hub could store up to 9 million metric tons of CO2 every year within the next five years.

Harry L. Schneider, 94, Otis, Kansas, passed away Sunday, November 
13, 2022, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La 
Crosse, Kansas.

Harry was born September 13, 1928, in Rush County, Kansas, the son of
 Jacob and Edna (Brack) Schneider.&nbsp; He was a lifelong resident of Rush 
County, Kansas.&nbsp; He owned and operated OK Oil Service in Otis, Kansas, a
 Mobil Oil distributor for many years before his retirement.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas.&nbsp; Harry was also the former fire chief of Otis, Kansas.&nbsp;

He married Alberta M. Brack in 1951 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas.&nbsp; She preceded him in death March 27, 1999.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and his daughter, Lee Anne Schneider, (October 21, 2011).

Per Harry’s wishes, the family has chosen cremation.

Memorial service will be Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. at
 Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas, with Stan Ewy, SAM officiating.&nbsp;

A private family inurnment will be at a later date in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Otis, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to Rush 
County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

 Mobil Oil distributor for many years before his retirement.He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas.&nbsp; Harry was also the former fire chief of Otis, Kansas.&nbsp;He married Alberta M. Brack in 1951 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas.&nbsp; She preceded him in death March 27, 1999.Survivors include many cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and his daughter, Lee Anne Schneider, (October 21, 2011).Per Harry’s wishes, the family has chosen cremation.Memorial service will be Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. at

NUSA DUA, Indonesia (AP) — President Joe Biden is set to cajole the world's largest economies to further isolate Russia diplomatically and economically over its invasion of Ukraine despite a souring global outlook that has tested other nations' resolve.

In meetings Tuesday at the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-biden-business-indonesia-china-026ceb20b07d3630345c7e7a1945a49e">Group of 20 summit</a>&nbsp;in Indonesia, the U.S. leader is to continue a global tour pressing nations to stand up to Russia and in defense of Ukraine’s sovereignty in both symbolic and substantive ways. The effort comes as global inflation and slowing economies have put new pressures on countries that imposed penalties on Russia for the nine-month war that has sent food and energy prices soaring.

A senior U.S. administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the summit discussions, said Tuesday that the summit’s final communique will make clear that “most” of the nations condemn Russia’s invasion in Ukraine, as well the toll it has taken on global food and energy supplies.

It remained to be seen how many nations would embrace the tough language or whether the document would refer to Russia’s actions as a “war” — a phrase Moscow has sought to avoid, despite the devastating losses sustained by its military.

U.S. officials have said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-southeast-asia-trip-china-ukraine-election-f71ee52a79a2bcbd029a9c9cbba32437">Biden's trip</a>&nbsp;has demonstrated that countries large and small are willing to condemn Russian aggression. Indonesian President Joko Widodo invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to virtually address the G-20 summit. It comes days after Ukraine's foreign minister was invited to participate in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/putin-inflation-british-politics-biden-health-96fece8e82b94cd836923747198c14c6">Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit</a>&nbsp;in Cambodia, where it became the latest signatory to the group's treaty of amity and cooperation.

After his&nbsp; nearly three-hour meeting<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-taiwan-indonesia-xi-jinping-government-and-politics-961bb4680962cc53b4375af3bcbc4927">&nbsp;with President Xi Jinping</a>&nbsp;on Monday, Biden said he and the Chinese leader discussed Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and “reaffirmed our shared belief” that the use or even the threat of nuclear weapons is “totally unacceptable” — a reference to Moscow’s thinly veiled threats to use atomic weapons as its invasion of Ukraine has faltered. Chinese officials had previously largely refrained from public criticism of Russia’s war, although Beijing has avoided direct support of the Russians, such as supplying arms.

The summit schedule does not include a “family photo” of leaders, which would avoid a potentially awkward moment of interaction with the Russian representative, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. It remained to be seen how Biden and U.S. allies would react when Lavrov is recognized to speak during the summit's closed sessions. Some Europeans have discussed potentially walking out of the meeting in a display of protest of Russia's invasion.

U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan said no one in the U.S. delegation had plans to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, often known as MBS, after Biden accused Saudi Arabia of siding with Russia by leading the OPEC+ cartel to cut oil production last month in a bid to sustain the elevated energy prices that Russia uses to fund its war in Ukraine.

It also was not clear whether anyone from the U.S. delegation would meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi or other leaders whose cooperation would be essential to securing a price cap on Russian oil to limit the profits Moscow uses to invest in its defense base.

At the summit, Biden will have his first opportunities to meet with two critical new partners in that effort: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni.

Sunak, who took office last month after the disastrously short tenure of Liz Truss, has promised to continue his conservative predecessors’ steadfast support for Ukraine. He and Biden are set to strategize during their Wednesday meeting on new ways to bolster Ukraine’s defenses for the long haul.

Meloni has pledged to continue to provide arms and aid for Ukraine, but questions remain over her far-right coalition’s commitment to stand up to Russia. She will meet with Biden privately on Tuesday afternoon.

The nearly three-hour meeting was the highlight of Biden’s weeklong, round-the-world trip to the Middle East and Asia, and came at a critical juncture for the two countries amid increasing economic and security tensions. Speaking at a news conference afterward, Biden said that when it comes to China, the U.S. would “compete vigorously, but I’m not looking for conflict.”

He added: “I absolutely believe there need not be a new Cold War” between America and the rising Asian power.

Biden reiterated U.S. support for its longstanding “One China” policy, which recognizes the government in Beijing — while allowing for informal American relations and defense ties with Taipei, and “strategic ambiguity” over whether the U.S. would respond militarily if the island were attacked. He also said that despite China's recent saber rattling, he does not believe "there’s any imminent attempt on the part of China to invade Taiwan.”

Xi, according to the Chinese government’s account of the meeting, “stressed that the Taiwan question is at the very core of China’s core interests, the bedrock of the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations.”

Biden said he and Xi also discussed Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and “reaffirmed our shared belief” that the use or even the threat of nuclear weapons is "totally unacceptable.” That was a reference to Moscow's thinly veiled threats to use atomic weapons as its nearly nine-month invasion of Ukraine has faltered.

While there were no watershed breakthroughs, the Biden-Xi meeting brought each side long-sought, if modest, gains. In addition to the shared condemnation of Russian nuclear threats, Biden appeared to secure from Xi the resumption of lower-level cooperation from China on a range of shared global challenges. Meanwhile, Xi, who has aimed to establish China as a geopolitical peer of the U.S., got symbolic home turf for the meeting as well as Biden’s forceful One China policy commitment.

The White House said Biden and Xi agreed to “empower key senior officials" to work on areas of potential cooperation, including tackling climate change and maintaining global financial, health and food stability. Beijing had cut off such contacts with the U.S. in protest of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan in August.

China and the U.S. are the world’s worst climate polluters, and their one-on-one climate contacts are seen as vital to staving off some of the most dire scenarios of climate change. Biden's first stop on his long overseas trip was in Egypt for a major climate conference.

The two leaders agreed to have U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken travel to Beijing to continue discussions.

Xi called on Biden to “chart the right course" and “elevate the relationship” between China and the U.S. He said he wanted a “candid and in-depth exchange of views."

Both men entered the highly anticipated meeting with bolstered political standing at home. As president, Biden has repeatedly taken China to task for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/china-japan-crime-geneva-72426c36d1a4c0ae83d9520d2f19d840">human rights abuses against the Uyghur people</a>&nbsp;and other ethnic minorities, crackdowns on democracy activists in Hong Kong, coercive trade practices, military provocations against self-ruled Taiwan and differences over Russia and Ukraine.

The White House said Biden specifically mentioned U.S. concerns about China's actions in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong, and the plight of Americans it considers “wrongfully detained” or subject to exit bans in China.

<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/taiwan">Taiwan</a>&nbsp;has emerged as one of the most contentious issues. Multiple times in his presidency,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taiwan-biden-china-nancy-pelosi-government-and-politics-abe8b7b0c6600e5fa869effae0d76ef2">Biden has said the U.S. would defend the island</a>&nbsp;— which China has eyed for eventual unification — in case of a Beijing-led invasion. But administration officials have stressed each time that the U.S. China policy has not changed.

Pelosi's trip prompted China, officially the People's Republic of China, to retaliate with military drills and the firing of ballistic missiles into nearby waters.

The White House said Biden “raised U.S. objections to the PRC’s coercive and increasingly aggressive actions toward Taiwan, which undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the broader region, and jeopardize global prosperity.”

In the meeting, Biden said China's economic practices “harm American workers and families, and workers and families around the world," the White House said.

The meeting came just weeks after the Biden administration&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-technology-china-asia-xi-jinping-cfd6fc9f04cc7ea47f61ee6f04383b57">blocked exports of advanced computer chips</a>&nbsp;to China — a national security move that bolsters U.S. competition against Beijing.

Xi's government said he condemned such moves, saying, “Starting a trade war or a technology war, building walls and barriers, and pushing for decoupling and severing supply chains run counter to the principles of market economy and undermine international trade rules.”

Although the two men have held five phone or video calls during Biden's presidency, White House officials said those encounters were no substitute for an in-person meeting. They said sitting down with Xi was all the more important after the Chinese leader strengthened his grip on power with a third term and because lower-level Chinese officials have been unable or unwilling to speak for their leader.

White House officials and their Chinese counterparts spent weeks negotiating details of the meeting, which was held at Xi’s hotel with translators providing simultaneous interpretation through headsets. Each leader was flanked by nine N-95 mask-wearing aides, and in the case of Xi, at least one official newly elevated in the recent Congress to its top leadership.

U.S. officials were eager to see how Xi approached the meeting after consolidating his position as the unquestioned leader of the state — whether that made him more or less likely to seek out areas of cooperation.

“I didn’t find him more confrontational or more conciliatory,” Biden said. "I found him the way he’s always been, direct and straightforward."

Multiple times in his presidency,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taiwan-biden-china-nancy-pelosi-government-and-politics-abe8b7b0c6600e5fa869effae0d76ef2">Biden has said the U.S. would defend the island</a>&nbsp;— which China has eyed for eventual unification — in case of a Beijing-led invasion. But administration officials have stressed each time that the U.S. China policy has not changed.Pelosi's trip prompted China, officially the People's Republic of China, to retaliate with military drills and the firing of ballistic missiles into nearby waters.The White House said Biden “raised U.S. objections to the PRC’s coercive and increasingly aggressive actions toward Taiwan, which undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the broader region, and jeopardize global prosperity.”In the meeting, Biden said China's economic practices “harm American workers and families, and workers and families around the world," the White House said.The meeting came just weeks after the Biden administration&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-technology-china-asia-xi-jinping-cfd6fc9f04cc7ea47f61ee6f04383b57">blocked exports of advanced computer chips</a>&nbsp;to China — a national security move that bolsters U.S. competition against Beijing.Xi's government said he condemned such moves, saying, “Starting a trade war or a technology war, building walls and barriers, and pushing for decoupling and severing supply chains run counter to the principles of market economy and undermine international trade rules.”Although the two men have held five phone or video calls during Biden's presidency, White House officials said those encounters were no substitute for an in-person meeting. They said sitting down with Xi was all the more important after the Chinese leader strengthened his grip on power with a third term and because lower-level Chinese officials have been unable or unwilling to speak for their leader.White House officials and their Chinese counterparts spent weeks negotiating details of the meeting, which was held at Xi’s hotel with translators providing simultaneous interpretation through headsets. Each leader was flanked by nine N-95 mask-wearing aides, and in the case of Xi, at least one official newly elevated in the recent Congress to its top leadership.U.S. officials were eager to see how Xi approached the meeting after consolidating his position as the unquestioned leader of the state — whether that made him more or less likely to seek out areas of cooperation.Biden said Xi was as he's always been.“I didn’t find him more confrontational or more conciliatory,” Biden said. October started a new year of enrollment for 4-H members in our eight community clubs and their involvement in 40 project areas! Each community club elects representatives to serve on the 4-H Council, much&nbsp;like Student Council. This is an additional layer of leadership and communication learning as the youth and parent representatives share information to and from their clubs. Additionally, they serve on committees to plan county-wide events such as our Achievement Celebration and 4-H Club Day.

The Achievement Celebration was held a week ago and provides an opportunity for fun, fellowship, and award recognition. The committee selected an 80s theme for a Totally Rad&nbsp;Celebration,&nbsp;and we had lots of neon attire and ice cream sundaes.

All 4-H members are encouraged to keep a record book. Now, I know that record books aren’t everyone’s favorite thing but it does provide good life skills practice in setting goals, keeping track of related finances and activities, and sharing the struggles and successes as our 4-H members learn.

Each year at the end of the celebration, I remind 4-H members to turn to their family members to tell them Thank You! I will add my thanks to club leaders, project leaders, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and neighbors who all have a hand in helping a 4-H member learn, grow, and thrive!&nbsp;
