Vernon Dale Soodsma passed away August 26, 2022, at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, KS at the age of 85.

He was born July 4, 1937, in Phillips County, KS the son of John William and Gertrude Johanna (Hogan) Soodsma.

He was united in marriage to Gladys Jane Kats on October 8, 1965, at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife Gladys of Scott City, KS; three sons Kevin
 and wife Amy of Grand Rapids, MI, Scott and wife Melissa of Healy, KS; 
and Terry of Buffalo, NY; two daughters Denise Van Soelen of Denver, CO 
and Tonya Koehn and husband Burke of Scott City, KS; a sister Leota Ehm 
of Indianapolis, IN; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2022, in 
the Luctor Christian Reformed Church in Phillips County, KS with Pastor 
Shawn Richardson officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Luctor 
Cemetery.

Mr. Soodsma will lie in state from noon until 9 p.m. Monday with the 
family receiving friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve 
Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS&nbsp; 67661.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Luctor Christian Reformed Church Memorial Fund.

Iris Emma Schafer, 69, of Gorham, Kansas, died on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at the Russell Regional Hospital E.R. in Russell, Kansas.

Iris was born on July 29, 1953, in Mesa, Arizona, the daughter of Louis A. and Emma (Hardt) Schroeder.&nbsp; She lived in Mesa at an early age and spent most of her childhood living in Yates Center, Kansas, graduating from Yates Center High School.&nbsp; She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Geary Schafer on October 04, 2001, in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on October 31, 2021.&nbsp; She enjoyed cooking and worked for many years as a cook at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; She was known for making the best bierocks but because they took so much time to make, she often had her family begging her to make them.&nbsp; She loved playing and spending time with her four precious dogs.&nbsp; She especially loved spending time with her family and spending quality time with her grandchildren.

Surviving family include sons Loren Schroeder and wife Shannon of Junction City, Kansas, and Wayne Light and wife Julia of Jacksonville, Florida, and daughter Tammie Krayca and husband Bob of Wilson, Kansas; 8 grandchildren, Victoria, Emma, Jordan, Christina, Michael, Ava, McKenna and Mason; and one great grandchild, Delaney.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Geary.

Naomi Doris Marie Clounch, age 89, of Iola, Kansas, passed away August 
25, 2022, in Iola, Kansas. Naomi was born July 14, 1933, in Omaha, 
Nebraska, to George W. Johnson, Sr. and Naomi Susie Mae (Anderson) 
Johnson. Naomi graduated Missouri Valley High School, Missouri
 Valley, Iowa, and she continued her education, receiving a dietician's 
certificate. Naomi was a dietary supervisor at Countryside Estates and 
then later a cook supervisor for Gas and LaHarpe Elementary Schools in 
the Iola school district. Naomi and Eugene E. Clounch, Jr. were married December 29, 1962, in Iola, Kansas. 
 Naomi belonged to the Clio Club and Ward Chapel AME Church, Iola, 
Kansas. She served her church as music director, missionary president, 
stewardess, and was a member of the Ward Chapel Singers. Naomi worked at
 the Allen County Regional Hospital as an auxiliary volunteer for 
several years. Naomi enjoyed spending time with her family, 
cooking, her Ebony Eight Red Hat Group and a local Red Hat Ladies group.
 She hosted many July 4th celebrations with family and friends. Naomi 
was a loving and caring person, who always fed everyone. If you needed a
 recipe, she was the person to go to for about any recipe imaginable. 
 Naomi was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene; sons, Paul
 Albert Graham, Jr., William Rodney Graham, Thurman David Graham, 
Nathaniel Maurice Graham; sister, GloriaJean Estill; and grandson, 
Justin Maurice Graham. Naomi is survived by daughters, Dr. 
Teresa L. Clounch, Hays, Kansas, Gena Clounch (Alan Scott), Iola,

grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and

Judith&nbsp;Amelia “Jude” Scheck,&nbsp;age 80,&nbsp;of&nbsp;Hays, Kansas&nbsp;died on August 25, 2022, at Hays&nbsp;Medical Center,&nbsp;Hays,&nbsp;Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was born July 31, 1942, in&nbsp;Great Bend,&nbsp;Kansas,&nbsp;Gottfried “Fred” and&nbsp;Helena (Stoppel) Mai.&nbsp;She was the youngest of 5 children.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jude married Gilbert&nbsp;E.&nbsp;Scheck on October 29, 1962, at Victoria, Kansas, and lived&nbsp;there until moving to Hays in 1965.

He preceded her in death on March 28, 2003.

Jude enjoyed playing the organ and piano and owned Jude’s Piano and Organ for many years. &nbsp;She gave lots of piano and organ lessons throughout the years.&nbsp;She and Gilbert owned Midwest Steam Cleaning for a number of years.

She grew up in&nbsp;Galatia and Gorham. Kansas, and was a 1960 graduate&nbsp;graduated from Russell High School.&nbsp;She was a foster parent for many years, taking in hundreds of children and teens,&nbsp;and&nbsp;served as guardian for people with disabilities.&nbsp;

She was attended&nbsp;of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, a member of the Hays Daughters of Isabella, the Red Hat Ladies and TOPS.&nbsp;She was a past member of the Ellis County Wellhead Protection Committee, and served as facilitator for the Northwest Kansas Dementia and&nbsp;Alzheimer’s&nbsp;Association. &nbsp;She enjoyed playing bridge with friends, and&nbsp;enjoyed shopping trips with her family,&nbsp;and never passed up a good bargain at a garage sale.

Jude is survived by her daughter, Monique&nbsp;Koerner&nbsp;and husband,&nbsp;Lance,&nbsp;Hays,&nbsp;KS; hersister, Nadene Albrecht, Topeka, KS;&nbsp;her&nbsp;grandchildren,&nbsp;Shaylan Holmes&nbsp;and&nbsp;Liam Holmes, Northglenn, CO;&nbsp;Riley Holmes, Seamus Holmes, and Tiernan Holmes, all of Hays, KS.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her&nbsp;parents; her&nbsp;husband, Gilbert&nbsp;E.&nbsp;Scheck;&nbsp;her&nbsp;sisters, Frieda Karst and Esther Stettinger;&nbsp;and her&nbsp;brother, Karl Mai.

WASHINGTON— President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced detailed plans to deliver on a campaign promise to provide $10,000 in student&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/student-loans">debt cancellation for millions of Americans</a>&nbsp;— and up to $10,000 more for those with the greatest financial need — along with measures to lower the burden of repayment for their remaining federal student debt.

The Biden Administration is following through and providing families breathing room as they prepare to start re-paying loans after the economic crisis brought on by the pandemic.

Since 1980, the total cost of both four-year public and four-year private college has&nbsp;<a href="https://research.collegeboard.org/trends/college-pricing">nearly tripled</a>, even after accounting for inflation. Federal support has not kept up: Pell Grants once covered&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbpp.org/research/federal-budget/pell-grants-a-key-tool-for-expanding-college-access-and-economic">nearly 80 percent</a>&nbsp;of the cost of a four-year public college degree for students from working families, but now only cover a third. That has left many students from low- and middle-income families with no choice but to borrow if they want to get a degree. According to a Department of Education analysis, the typical undergraduate student with loans now graduates with nearly $25,000 in debt.&nbsp;

The skyrocketing cumulative federal student loan debt—$1.6 trillion and rising for more than 45 million borrowers—is a significant burden on America’s middle class. Middle-class borrowers struggle with high monthly payments and ballooning balances that make it harder for them to build wealth, like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10.1086/704609?mobileUi=0">buying homes</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://crr.bc.edu/working-papers/how-does-student-debt-affect-early-career-retirement-saving/">putting away money for retirement</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.philadelphiafed.org/the-economy/the-impact-of-student-loan-debt-on-small-business-formation">starting small&nbsp;</a><a href="https://pubsonline.informs.org/doi/abs/10.1287/mnsc.2017.2995?journalCode=mnsc">businesses</a>. For the most vulnerable borrowers, the effects of debt are even more crushing. Nearly one-third of borrowers have debt but no degree, according to an analysis by the Department of Education of a recent cohort of undergraduates. Many of these students could not complete their degree because the&nbsp;<a href="https://educationdata.org/college-dropout-rates">cost of attendance</a>&nbsp;was too high. About&nbsp;<a href="https://fsapartners.ed.gov/knowledge-center/library/electronic-announcements/2022-07-13/federal-student-aid-posts-quarterly-portfolio-reports-fsa-data-center#:~:text=Impact%20on%20Direct%20Loan%20Defaults&amp;text=In%20fact%2C%20the%20number%20of,3.4%20million%20in%20March%202022.">16%</a>&nbsp;of borrowers are in default – including nearly a third of senior citizens with student debt – which can result in the government garnishing a borrower’s wages or lowering a borrower’s credit score. The student debt burden also falls disproportionately on Black borrowers. Twenty years after first enrolling in school, the typical Black borrower who started college in the 1995-96 school year still owed&nbsp;<a href="https://heller.brandeis.edu/iere/pdfs/racial-wealth-equity/racial-wealth-gap/stallingdreams-how-student-debt-is-disrupting-lifechances.pdf">95%</a>&nbsp;of their original student debt. Today, President Biden is announcing a three-part plan to provide more breathing room to America’s working families as they continue to recover from the strains associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. This plan offers targeted debt relief as part of a comprehensive effort to address the burden of growing college costs and make the student loan system more manageable for working families. The President is announcing that the Department of Education will: &nbsp;&nbsp;

Provide Targeted Debt Relief, Fulfilling the President’s Campaign Commitment To address the financial harms of the pandemic for low- and middle-income borrowers and avoid defaults as loan repayment restarts next year, the Department of Education will provide up to $20,000 in loan relief to borrowers with loans held by the Department of Education whose individual income is less than $125,000 ($250,000 for married couples) and who received a Pell Grant.&nbsp;<a href="https://studentaid.gov/data-center/student/title-iv">Nearly every Pell Grant recipient</a>&nbsp;came from a family that made less than $60,000 a year, and Pell Grant recipients typically experience more challenges repaying their debt than other borrowers. Borrowers who meet those income standards but did not receive a Pell Grant in college can receive up to $10,000 in loan relief.

The Pell Grant program is one of America’s most effective financial aid programs—but its value has been eroded over time. Pell Grant recipients are more than 60% of the borrower population. The Department of Education estimates that roughly 27 million borrowers will be eligible to receive up to $20,000 in relief, helping these borrowers meet their economic potential and avoid economic harm from the COVID-19 pandemic. Current students with loans are eligible for this debt relief. Borrowers who are dependent students will be eligible for relief based on parental income, rather than their own income. If all borrowers claim the relief they are entitled to, these actions will:

The Department of Education will work quickly and efficiently to set up a simple application process for borrowers to claim relief. The application will be available no later than when the pause on federal student loan repayments terminates at the end of the year. Nearly 8 million borrowers may be eligible to receive relief automatically because their relevant income data is already available to the Department. &nbsp; Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, this debt relief will not be treated as taxable income for the federal income tax purposes. To help ensure a smooth transition back to repayment, the Department of Education is extending the student loan pause a final time through December 31, 2022. No one with federally-held loans has had to pay a single dollar in loan payments since President Biden took office. Make the Student Loan System More Manageable for Current and Future Borrowers Fixing Existing Loan Repayment to Lower Monthly Payments The Administration is reforming student loan repayment plans so both current and future low- and middle-income borrowers will have smaller and more manageable monthly payments. The Department of Education has the authority to create income-driven repayment plans, which cap what borrowers pay each month based on a percentage of their discretionary income. Most of these plans cancel a borrower’s remaining debt once they make 20 years of monthly payments. But the existing versions of these plans are too complex and too limited. As a result, millions of borrowers who might benefit from them do not sign up, and the millions who do sign up are still often left with unmanageable monthly payments. To address these concerns and follow through on Congress’ original vision for income-driven repayment, the Department of Education is proposing a rule to do the following:

These reforms would simplify loan repayment and deliver significant savings to low- and middle-income borrowers. For example:

For each of these borrowers, their balances would not grow as long as they are making their monthly payments, and their remaining debt would be forgiven after they make the required number of qualifying payments. Further, the Department of Education will make it easier for borrowers who enroll in this new plan to stay enrolled. Starting in the summer of 2023, borrowers will be able to allow the Department of Education to automatically pull their income information year after year, avoiding the hassle of needing to recertify their income annually. Ensuring Public Servants Receive Credit Toward Loan Forgiveness Borrowers working in public service are entitled to earn credit toward debt relief under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. But because of complex eligibility restrictions, historic implementation failures, and poor counseling given to borrowers, many borrowers have not received the credit they deserve for their public service. The Department of Education has announced time-limited changes to PSLF that provide an easier path to forgiveness of all outstanding debt for eligible federal student loan borrowers who have served at a non-profit, in the military, or in federal, state, Tribal, or local government for at least 10 years, including non-consecutively. Those who have served less than 10 years may now more easily get credit for their service to date toward eventual forgiveness. These changes allow eligible borrowers to gain additional credit toward forgiveness, even if they had been told previously that they had the wrong loan type. The Department of Education also has proposed regulatory changes to ensure more effective implementation of the PSLF program moving forward. Specifically, the Department of Education has proposed allowing more payments to qualify for PSLF including partial, lump sum, and late payments, and allowing certain kinds of deferments and forbearances, such as those for Peace Corps and AmeriCorps service, National Guard duty, and military service, to count toward PSLF. The Department of Education also proposed to ensure the rules work better for non-tenured instructors whose colleges need to calculate their full-time employment. To ensure borrowers are aware of the temporary changes, the White House has launched four PSLF Days of Action dedicated to borrowers in specific sectors: government employees, educators, healthcare workers and first responders, and non-profit employees. You can find out other information about the temporary changes on PSLF.gov. You must apply to PSLF before the temporary changes end on October 31, 2022. Protecting Borrowers and Taxpayers from Steep Increases in College Costs While providing this relief to low- and middle-income borrowers, the President is focused on keeping college costs under control. Under this Administration, students have had more money in their pockets to pay for college. The President signed the largest increase to the maximum Pell Grant in over a decade and provided nearly $40 billion to colleges and universities through the American Rescue Plan, much of which was used for emergency student financial aid, allowing students to breathe a little easier. Additionally, the Department of Education has already taken significant steps to strengthen accountability, so that students are not left with mountains of debt with little payoff. The agency has re-established the enforcement unit in the Office of Federal Student Aid and it is holding accreditors’ feet to the fire. In fact, the Department just withdrew authorization for the accreditor that oversaw schools responsible for some of the worst for-profit scandals. The agency will also propose a rule to hold career programs accountable for leaving their graduates with mountains of debt they cannot repay, a rule the previous Administration repealed. Building off of these efforts, the Department of Education is announcing new actions to hold accountable colleges that have contributed to the student debt crisis. These include publishing an annual watch list of the programs with the worst debt levels in the country, so that students registering for the next academic year can steer clear of programs with poor outcomes. They also include requesting institutional improvement plans from the worst actors that outline how the colleges with the most concerning debt outcomes intend to bring down debt levels. &nbsp;

Robert E. “Bob” Glassman, 90, Hays, died Sunday, August 21, 2022, at Hays Good Samaritan Society.

He was born October 27, 1931, in Hays, 
the son of Edgar C. and Amelia (Haas) Glassman.&nbsp; Bob graduated from Hays
 High School and attended Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; On September 13, 
1954, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Younger in Victoria.&nbsp; They 
later divorced. &nbsp;He worked as a plumber and was the owner and operator 
of The Downtowner.&nbsp; His memberships included St. Joseph Catholic Church,
 St. Joseph Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #1325, and the 
Order of Secular Franciscans.&nbsp; Bob loved baseball, and for 18 years, 
coached the Little League Cardinals and Hays Legion teams.&nbsp; He enjoyed 
making rosaries and putting puzzles together, all of which are cherished
 by family.

Survivors include his son: Edgar 
Glassman and wife Diana of Hays, four daughters: Debbie Lewton of Hays, 
Shelly Glassman of Great Bend, Bobbi Irwin and husband Les of Topeka, 
and Amy Huff of Hays, four sisters: Esther Pfannenstiel of Billings, MT,
 Clara Korbe of Hays, Roseann Keast of Longmont, CO, and Betty Tenuta

Neil Noel Hurlburt, age 87, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at Parkview Care Center in Osborne, KS.
 His strong faith in God made this transition peaceful. He was born 
on October 14, 1934, at home in the Mayflower Community, the son of 
Wilkes and Celeste (Ulmer) Knoll. He was adopted at 8 months old by 
Jerry R. and Vesta (Roach) Hurlburt. His hobbies were coin and stamp 
collecting, gardening, playing cards and board games with nieces, 
nephews and cousins. He enjoyed raising livestock. He and his dad 
enjoyed working together doing remodeling and construction jobs.
 After his parents passed away he went to live with his cousin Dean 
and Ramona Cole in Dodge City, where he became very close with their 
families. He was well liked by the Dodge City community. He especially
 enjoyed volunteering with Dodge City Days Rodeo.
 He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. He is 
survived by two sisters Marvel (Hurlburt) (Cameron) Schaadt and Dorothy 
(Knoll) Alfen. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews and 
cousins.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang added another key piece to his team on Sunday afternoon (August 21) with the signing of sophomore transfer Anthony Thomas (Silver Spring, Md./Olympus Prep Academy/Tennessee-Martin/Tallahassee [Fla.] Community College) to a Financial Aid Agreement with the program for the 2022-23 season.

A 6-foot-7, 180-pound combo guard, Thomas arrives at K-State after playing the 2021-22 season at Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, Fla., where he averaged 11 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in helping the Eagles win 21 games in one of the nation's top junior college leagues – the Panhandle Conference. He played in 22 games with four starts as a freshman at UT-Martin in 2020-21, averaging 9.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.

"Anthony is another great addition to our team, and we are excited to welcome him and his family to K-State," said Tang. "We're really pleased to add a player of his caliber this late in the recruiting season. We like both his size and skill set and think he will grow into a productive player once he gets around our elite staff. We can't wait to get him to campus and in front of Wildcat Nation!"

Thomas will have three years of eligibility remaining after the NCAA granted Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 sport student-athletes an additional year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thomas enjoyed a productive 2021-22 season at Tallahassee Community College, which boasted seven Division I signees. He ranked second on the Eagles in scoring (11.0 ppg.), while he was third in field goals (96) and 3-point field goals (27) as well as rebounding (4.6 rpg.). He scored in double figures in 15 games, which included eight games of 15 or more points and three 20-point outings. He twice scored a season-high 25 points, including against conference foe Pensacola State on Feb. 16 on 6-of-11 field goals and 11-of-14 free throws.

For the season, Thomas averaged 11.0 points on 42.3 percent (96-of-227) shooting, including 34.6 percent (27-of-78) from 3-point range, to go with 4.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game, while playing 25 games with 16 starts. He twice played against future teammate and JUCO All-American Nae'Qwan Tomlin (Harlem, N.Y./Urban Assembly School/Chipola [Fla.] College), who played at Chipola College.

Thomas began his college career in 2020-21 at UT-Martin, where he saw action in 22 of 24 games with four starts as a true freshman during an unprecedented season for the Skyhawks. In addition to navigating the pandemic conditions, Thomas and his teammates tragically lost their head coach Anthony Stewart right before the season on Nov. 15, 2020.

Despite the adversity, Thomas flourished as a true freshman, emerging as the team's top freshman in 2020-21, ranking second in 3-point field goals (23) and fourth in scoring (9.0 ppg.), while connecting on 75.8 percent (25-of-33) from the free throw line. He became the first Skyhawk true freshman to start a season opener since 2013-14, playing 25 minutes against Evansville on Dec. 2, 2020. He went on to score in double figures on seven different occasions, going for 15 or more points on six of those occasions, including a pair of 20-point outings.

Among his best games was a career-high 24-point effort vs. SIUE on Jan. 30, 2021, in which, he became the first Skyhawk freshman to record a 20-point game against an OVC opponent since 2012. He connected on 9-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and went 3-of-3 from the line in 26 minutes. He also had 21 points at Belmont on Jan. 9, 2021, to go along with a career-high 6 rebounds and 2 steals in 22 minutes.

In all, Thomas averaged 9.0 points on 37.7 percent (75-of-199) shooting, including 30.7 percent (23-of-75) from 3-point range, with 2.8 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 0.7 steals in 24 minutes per game in 2020-21.

Thomas played his senior season at Olympus Prep Academy in Williamstown, N.J., where he earned NJHoops.com third team all-state honors for the independent/prep class in 2020. He played in over 40 games and events while playing the Great Atlantic Conference.

Thomas was rated as a three-star prospect out of Olympus Prep by 247Sports, ranking among the top-50 players at his position for the Class of 2020. He was recognized as one of the seven national standouts from the Hoop Group Fall High School Showcase in October 2019.

Thomas is the 10th player to sign with the Wildcats since Tang was introduced as the program's head coach on March 21, including the second community college transfer following Tomlin. The addition gives K-State a full complement of 13 scholarship players.

Overall, Thomas is the 11th newcomer added to the team for the 2022-23 season. The class also includes seven Division I transfers – Cam Carter (Mississippi State), Jerrell Colbert (LSU), Abayomi "Baybe" Iyiola (Stetson/Arkansas/Hofstra), Keyontae Johnson (Florida), David N'Guessan (Virginia Tech), Desi Sills (Arkansas/ Arkansas State) and Tykei Greene (Manhattan/Stony Brook) – and two high school standouts – Dorian Finister (New Orleans, La./Carver) and Taj Manning (Grandview, Mo., La Lumiere School [Ind.]).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes led two similar touchdown drives and the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Washington Commanders 24-14 in a preseason game Saturday.

The first one was a 12-play, 87-yard drive in 5:28, capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jody Fortson. The second was a 12-play, 82-yard drive that took 5:25 and was capped by a 7-yard touchdown toss to Fortson.

Mahomes finished 12 of 19 for 162 yards. In two preseason games, Mahomes has played three series and has led three touchdown drives. He was 6 of 7 for 60 yards and a touchdown in the first preseason game in Chicago.

“I thought our execution was pretty good there,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “The first play (was designed for Fortson). The second one, Pat was moving around and found him.”

“It’s good to have Jody back. He’s a good football player who had a tough injury against this team last year.”

Fortson, who is listed as the fourth-string tight end on the depth chart, tied for the team lead on the Chiefs with four receptions, most coming in the first half. The Chiefs use multiple tight-end sets, and Fortson could earn a spot on the 53-man roster.

“I think you’ve seen what Jody is,” Mahomes said. “When he’s one on one and he has a guy behind him, you can give him that chance. I have that trust with him now. He wasn’t necessarily open, but when you have a big guy who can make those physical, tough catches, you give him a chance.”

Fortson is glad to be part of the mix after suffering a season-ending Achilles injury last October.

“It’s a blessing,” he said. “I’m just honored to be here. The support system of the athletic trainers and the coaches have never let me get down. It feels awesome to get out here and play in front of these fans.”

He has five career regular-season receptions, including two touchdowns, all coming last season. But with his 6-4, 226-pound frame, he looks like he may be a short-yardage option for Mahomes.

Washington starter Carson Wentz played three series and finished 6 of 9 for 64 yards.

“I thought it was OK," Wentz said. “I definitely left some plays out there, definitely wish we could’ve sustained some drives a little bit more. That’s the biggest thing, the biggest takeaway for me, early. Especially those third downs, there’s a couple that I wish I could have back.”

The Commanders went 0 for 3 on third downs with Wentz in the game — with all three leading to punts.

“Carson got the ball to the 40s a couple of times and we didn’t get points out of it because we made a negative play,” coach Ron Rivera said. “We had a third-and-5 and a third-and-10 and then take a sack. We can’t do that to ourselves.”

The Chiefs' starting defense has not allowed a point in the first two exhibition games.

“The guys are playing fast,” Reid said. “We’re short a couple of guys (defensive tackle Chris Jones and defensive end Frank Clark), so we had some younger guys in. They got some good experience.

“I like what I’m seeing. We’ve got to keep getting better, but I do like the speed.”

Washington backups Taylor Heinicke and Sam Howell led touchdown drives. Heinicke led an 11-play, 84-yard drive, capped by a 9-yard touchdown to Cam Sims just before halftime. Howell led a 93-yard drive in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 17-14.

Harrison Butker missed on his only long-range attempt (from 53 yards), but he showed the strength in his right leg during warmups. He hit one from 63 yards with plenty of room to spare. He then hit comfortably from 69 yards and from 74 yards on his next two tries.

Butker has said during training camp that he felt he could be successful from 70 yards in a game. He has a career long of 58 yards and is 20 of 28 from beyond 50 yards.

Esther Eva Mellies, 98, died August 18, 2022, in Dodge City, KS. She 
was born on January 30, 1924, in WaKenney, Kansas, the daughter of Henry 
and Mollie (Schneider) Stenzel. &nbsp;

Esther grew up on a farm in WaKeeney and attended schools in Trego 
County. She moved to Dodge City in 1946 and has been a resident ever 
since. She married Edward Mellies on October 19, 1957, at the Messiah 
Lutheran Church in Dodge City, KS. She owned and operated Esther’s 
Beauty Salon until 1973. Esther was a homemaker and enjoyed doing arts 
and crafts.

She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church and served in 
various women’s associations with the church and other church 
activities.

Esther is survived by many nieces and nephews and many extended 
family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; loving 
husband; nine brothers; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church on 
Tuesday, August 23, 2022, with Pastor Corky Spittler presiding. Burial 
will follow at Greencrest Memorial Garden in Dodge City, KS.&nbsp; Visitation

Gertrude Mae (Tholen) Brown, age 100, of Hays, Kansas died Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp;

She was born in Topeka, Kansas on March 7th,&nbsp;1922, to Anton and Anna&nbsp;(Muehlenkamp)&nbsp;Tholen. &nbsp;She&nbsp;spent most of her childhood in Oakley, Kansas, and graduated from &nbsp;Windhorst&nbsp;High School.&nbsp;She married Noah Brown on October&nbsp;7th,&nbsp;1945, in&nbsp;Salina,&nbsp;Kansas.&nbsp;He preceded her in death on April 15, 1985.

Gertrude owned and&nbsp;operated&nbsp;The Rose Beauty Shop out of the home while she and Noah raised their family&nbsp;in&nbsp;Hays.&nbsp;She had a green thumb,&nbsp;so there was always a bountiful vegetable garden, flowers blooming and a unique collection of houseplants at her home.&nbsp;Gertrude could sew, knit and crochet skillfully, but her passion was quilting. &nbsp;Every baby in the family slept under a crib quilt and received larger quilts as adults.&nbsp;She won many ribbons at the county and state fairs for her beautiful creations.

A devout Catholic, Gertrude was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic&nbsp;Church&nbsp;and a former member of the Christian Mothers,&nbsp;both of Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;She donated her quilts to the church to benefit a home for unwed mothers and for auction to benefit the Altar Society.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After her children were grown, Gertrude continued working in her salon,&nbsp;gardening,sewing and always made room for her grandchildren in her home. &nbsp;After retiring&nbsp;in 1994she became an avid reader and continued her other hobbies as&nbsp;well.&nbsp;In&nbsp;2020,&nbsp;Gertrude moved to Topeka and spent her remaining years being cared for by her daughter, Janice. &nbsp;

Some of the 
unsung heroes are the brave men and women climbing electrical poles to 
restore power to the masses after a storm. Hoisington artist Bruce 
Bitter of B&amp;B Metal Arts is paying tribute to those linemen with his
 "After the Storm" stainless steel installment, recently dedicated to 
Jim McVey at the new Wheatland Electric facility on east 10th Street in 
Great Bend.

The Board of Wheatland Electric dedicated the artwork 
to McVey in recognition of his efforts in managing the design and 
construction of the new facility. Jim's wife, Dana, reached out to 
Bitter for the project. Bitter answered by poring over photographs of 
linemen and speaking with supervisors to get every detail accurate.

"If
 you look, it's got the safety glasses, the current safety straps, the 
right tools," Bitter said. "Everything is up to date with what a 
Wheatland lineman would use. It was also based off their brand new poles
 they are currently using with the fiberglass tops and the bolt 
patterns." 

The full depiction spans 30 feet and includes three 
power poles with two linemen working. Bitter worked on the project from 
August to October, perfecting many of the fine details and colors.

"The
 coloring is what I can get out of the stainless steel," he said. "It's 
more of an art than a science. You can't reproduce it, you have to know 
what you're doing. You take the heat like a paintbrush over the steel to
 create all the different colors."

Much like his previous 9/11 memorial that included steel from an 
actual World Trade Center building, "After the Storm" also incorporates 
various elements to heighten the work's authenticity.

"It actually
 has copper staples in there," Bitter said. "It has a copper ground wire
 ground down it. I simulated the wood on the telephone poles, I used the
 correct insulators, and how they tied the straps and electrical lines. 
Everything was correctly proportioned."

Since opening B&amp;B 
Metal Arts with his brother, Brent, in 1995, Bruce has remained busy. 
Some of his larger projects include the 9/11 Memorial and a Steve 
Fossett memorial at Salina Regional Airport. Closer to home, Bruce 
recently completed an installment for the Barton Community College Fine 
Arts Building. He created the signs for Dry Lake Brewing and P&amp;S 
Security, and the hospital benches for Clara Barton Hospital. In 2013, 
his life-sized baseball and softball players were commissioned for the 
entrance of the Great Bend Sports Complex.

"After the Storm" will 
be on display at Wheatland's open house on Thursday, Aug. 18 from 10 
a.m. to 2 p.m. The new facility is located at 200 10th Street in Great 
Bend.

August to October, perfecting many of the fine details and colors."The
 coloring is what I can get out of the stainless steel," he said. "It's 
more of an art than a science. You can't reproduce it, you have to know 
what you're doing. You take the heat like a paintbrush over the steel to

 correct insulators, and how they tied the straps and electrical lines. 
Everything was correctly proportioned."Since opening B&amp;B 
Metal Arts with his brother, Brent, in 1995, Bruce has remained busy. 
Some of his larger projects include the 9/11 Memorial and a Steve 
Fossett memorial at Salina Regional Airport. Closer to home, Bruce

tax return with full payment prevents additional interest and penalties.

Jeane Carol Laizure Smith, 94, of Manhattan, KS, passed away on August 
10, 2022. Jeane was born July 9, 1928, in Gorham, Kansas, to the late 
Clarence and Nellie Laizure.
 Jeane married the love of her life, Donald Smith, on October 31, 
1948. She retired from Kansas State University in December 1987 
performing accountant work for several departments. Jeane and Don made 
their home primarily in Hays and Norton, until moving to Manhattan in 
1968. Jeane graduated from Hays High School and attended Ft. Hays State 
University and graduated from Kansas State University. Jeane and Don 
were avid RVers and were members of the Man-Kan Campers Club. Jeane and 
Don were snowbirds enjoying winters in Mission, Texas with their 
friends. Happy Birthday, grandma, as Jeane was known to her children 
and grandchildren, always called on their birthdays singing the song in 
her wonderful voice. Jeane loved the traditions and preparations for all
 holidays which the family will cherish forever.
 Jeane followed Don, her husband of 72 years, in death. She is 
survived by: her son; Richard "Dick" (Kimberly Briggs) Smith of Lenexa, 
KS; daughters, Linda Smith (Timothy) Duncan of Fort Collins, CO; and 
Janet Smith (Tad) Wicker of Norton, KS; nine grandchildren; Charisse 
Wilson (Larry) Powell, Laura Duncan, Mandy Welch, Bethany Wicker, Matt 
(Crissy) Duncan, Elizabeth Smith (Scott) Hammack, Karen Duncan (Dennis 
Bigelow), Christina Smith (Brian) Geiger, and William (Kelly) Smith; 17

 On October 20, 2008, James married Sadetthong “Sally” Keopine in Salina, Kansas.
 James was a triplet and liked to play jokes on people by pretending 
to be one of the other triplet brothers. He was also an avid Raiders 
football fan and loved fishing and camping. James was a retired member 
of the Army National Guard and served two deployments to Iraq. James 
had many ventures through the years but his most successful endeavors 
were Trade Craft Clothing line and MJ Tackle. Above all, along with 
the Lord, his wife and kids were his ultimate mission in life. 
 He was preceded in death by his mother, Carolyn; grandparents, Helen
 and Paul Barnes; grandparents, Carl and Arnetta Nevins and 
father-in-law, Khamvane Sayasing.
 James is survived by his wife, Sadetthong “Sally” Nevins, daughter,

Steve W. Gossman, age 72, passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at
 his home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on May 4, 1950, in Garden 
City, Kansas, the son of Charles and Irene Withorn Gossman.&nbsp; A resident 
of Scott County, Kansas since 1984 moving from the family farm in Finney
 County, Kansas, he was a retired truck driver and farmer.

He was of the Christian faith and was a Boy Scout Leader.

On October 10, 1977, he married Veta Oyler in Eads, Colorado.&nbsp; She survives.

Survivors include his Wife - Veta Gossman of Scott City, Kansas, 
Three Sons - Clint &amp; Anne Gossman of Scott City, Kansas, Justin 
&amp; Tasha Gossman of Scott City, Kansas, Tyler Gossman of Salina,

The internet is full of advice on just about everything, including plant care.

As the <a href="https://plant.lab.uconn.edu/">director of a plant diagnostic laboratory</a>
 and expert on plant medicine, I help people manage their plants’ 
health. Here are four trends I’ve seen online recently that have stood 
out as being especially misleading or potentially damaging to plants.

Watering orchids and other plants with ice cubes

Multiple sites claim ice cubes can be used to give orchids a “just 
right” amount of water. The fact is tropical plants hate cold 
temperatures. Leaving <a href="http://www.ladybug.uconn.edu/FactSheets/house-plants---growing-.php">ice near an orchid’s roots may damage them</a>.

Nearly all houseplants, including orchids, will prefer lukewarm or 
room temperature water, about 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees 
Celsius). Use fact sheets from educational institutions and reputable 
organizations to determine the correct amount of water and watering 
schedule for the types of plants you’re growing, and then set a reminder
 on your phone. 

Use a potting medium that drains well and quickly. For orchids, <a href="https://www.aos.org/orchids/orchid-care/what-is-the-best-potting-media.aspx">a mix of bark chips and sphagnum moss is much better</a> than 100% soil or coco coir.

Many campaigns have sprung up recently promoting “<a href="https://beecityusa.org/no-mow-may/">No Mow May</a>.”
 The idea is to delay regular mowing for the month of May to provide 
more feeding sites for pollinators, which are trying to shore up 
calories after their winter hibernation.

Unfortunately, this practice usually does not benefit pollinators and could damage your lawn’s health. Here’s why:

Mowing more than 30% of a grass leaf at once is never a good idea. 
Grasses depend on their blades to photosynthesize and meet their energy 
needs. When more than 30% is lost at once, the plants may not have 
enough remaining leaf surface area to photosynthesize properly.

Overgrown lawns have overgrown root systems, which require more energy. Failure to provide it leads to <a href="https://hgic.clemson.edu/mowing-height-matters/">increased susceptibility to disease</a>, poor water management and potential collapse. Such damage is pretty much unavoidable after a monthlong “no mow” period.

Few lawns actually contain enough flowers to be beneficial to 
pollinators, anyway. For many people, the “perfect lawn” is an 
unwavering green carpet. But that uniformity is useless to bees and 
other pollinators that require <a href="https://www.epa.gov/pollinator-protection/what-you-can-do-protect-honey-bees-and-other-pollinators">pollen and nectar that other plants can provide</a>.

It’s great to <a href="https://www.epa.gov/pollinator-protection/what-you-can-do-protect-honey-bees-and-other-pollinators">prioritize pollinator health</a>,
 but the “no mow” trend is best implemented in prairie, field and 
wetland environments, where there is a lot of plant diversity and 
flowering plants.

If you’re looking to support pollinator health in your own yard, <a href="https://www.nwf.org/NativePlantFinder">plant native wildflowers</a>
 that pollinators will actually want to visit. Most require less water 
and management compared to grass lawns. Replace your entire lawn or even
 a small strip. Any amount of lawn replaced is beneficial – and will 
save you water and money.

Make sure not to mow the wildflowers until they’ve finished 
flowering. A wildflower patch usually only needs to be cut once or twice
 a year. Mowing after the last frost in early spring will spread the 
previous year’s seeds and <a href="https://extension.psu.edu/planting-pollinator-friendly-gardens">provide a home for insects to spend the winter</a>.

Using hydrogen peroxide to ‘cure’ plant diseases

Hydrogen peroxide <a href="https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/Hydrogen-peroxide">does sterilize surfaces and can reduce bacteria and some fungi</a>.
 But the rapid reaction that gives hydrogen peroxide its sterilizing 
properties occurs almost immediately after coming in contact with other 
compounds. This does not permit hydrogen peroxide to move throughout a 
plant.

So most pathogens – the organisms that cause disease – will not be 
affected if they are in a plant’s tissues rather than on its exterior. 
Applying hydrogen peroxide excessively or improperly may even <a href="https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/Hydrogen-peroxide">make plant health issues worse</a> by drying surfaces and killing beneficial microbes.

While there is certainly a time and place for sterilizing surfaces in
 plant care – like with your pruners and propagation tools – the best 
defense against plant diseases is proper care. 

Water your plants only when necessary and provide proper light and 
nutrition. Research what your plant likes best from educational 
institutions or other reputable sources. Routine pruning to increase 
airflow, proper plant spacing, avoiding single-crop planting and crop 
rotation are just some examples of chemical-free techniques to <a href="https://ipm.cahnr.uconn.edu/">reduce plant stress and decrease disease susceptibility</a>.

Many apps exist that use photographs submitted by the user to identify plant diseases and offer solutions. 

The truth is, to diagnose most plant diseases, a scientist needs to 
culture plant tissue to correctly identify pathogens. Only after an 
accurate diagnosis <a href="https://apsjournals.apsnet.org/journal/pdis">can they recommend management solutions</a>.
 I have a pretty strong opinion here, since disease identification is 
what I do every day. Plant symptoms that accompany one disease may be 
practically identical to those of another.

For example, herbicide exposure, viruses, insect feeding and fungal 
infections can all cause twisted and deformed leaves. To properly 
diagnose an issue, the plant’s own history, location, site history, time
 of year and other factors need to be considered before I can take a 
guess as to what may be contributing to symptoms. 

Don’t rely on an app to guess at what disease your plant may have – 
and don’t act on bogus recommendations. Instead, reach out to your local
 university diagnostic lab or extension office for support.

you end up submitting a sample to a diagnostic lab, most are affordable –
