October started a new year of enrollment for 4-H members in our eight community clubs and their involvement in 40 project areas! Each community club elects representatives to serve on the 4-H Council, much&nbsp;like Student Council. This is an additional layer of leadership and communication learning as the youth and parent representatives share information to and from their clubs. Additionally, they serve on committees to plan county-wide events such as our Achievement Celebration and 4-H Club Day.

The Achievement Celebration was held a week ago and provides an opportunity for fun, fellowship, and award recognition. The committee selected an 80s theme for a Totally Rad&nbsp;Celebration,&nbsp;and we had lots of neon attire and ice cream sundaes.

All 4-H members are encouraged to keep a record book. Now, I know that record books aren’t everyone’s favorite thing but it does provide good life skills practice in setting goals, keeping track of related finances and activities, and sharing the struggles and successes as our 4-H members learn.

Each year at the end of the celebration, I remind 4-H members to turn to their family members to tell them Thank You! I will add my thanks to club leaders, project leaders, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and neighbors who all have a hand in helping a 4-H member learn, grow, and thrive!&nbsp;

BERAN: 4-H celebration! 

KANSAS CITY —Two Kansas City men have been charged in a Westport area beating of a man and woman after citizens helped police identify the suspects, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

Collin E. London, 26, faces two counts of Assault 1st Degree and Daniel McQuarters, 26, faces two counts of Assault 1st Degree.

According to court records, on Oct. 23, police were dispatched to the 4000 block of Pennsylvania on a reported tavern disturbance. Westport Security arrived first at the scene.

They found a victim bleeding from the head and unconscious. A second victim was also unconscious.

The victims later told police detectives that they were walking along Pennsylvania Street when two men began to beat and kick them. One victim said she was pistol whipped.

The police distributed to media videos from social media of the assault. Police received information soon after from a Kansas City company that employees believed the two male suspects were employees of the company.&nbsp;

Sharyn Colene (Lambert) Kilian, 61, of Russell, Kansas, died on 
Thursday, November 10, 2022, at the St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, 
Kansas.

Sharyn was born on September 29, 1961, in Plainville,
 Kansas, the daughter of Elwyn James and Wilda Madeline (Hand) Lambert.&nbsp;
 She grew up in Stockton, Kansas, and graduated from Stockton High 
School in 1979.&nbsp; In her teenage years Sharyn worked in her mother’s café
 as a waitress &amp; short order cook. After graduation she attended the
 Hays Academy of Hair Design in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She was a beautician for 
over 30 years, during this time she also worked as a bartender for the 
Stockton VFW Post #8873.&nbsp; Through a mutual friend she met, fell in love 
and was united in marriage to Anthony “Tony” Dennis Kilian on October 
25, 2008, in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Sharyn then worked as a canteen manager 
at the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 for several years and currently worked 
as head cook at the Russell Senior Center.&nbsp; She enjoyed cooking, 
gambling at casinos with Tony and friends, flowers, dancing, watching 
soap operas, Kansas University sports, Kansas City Chiefs football and 
betting at horse racing.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her
 family and many friends.&nbsp; She will be fondly remembered for her dry 
wit, cooking skills and especially her deviled eggs.

Surviving family include her husband Tony of the home, twin sister 
Karyn Arnold (Mike Murphy) of Osborne, Kansas, sisters Linda Krysl of 
Bella Vista, Arkansas &amp; Diana Harris (Bill) of Pratt, Kansas; nieces
 and nephews Tammy, Tori, Stephanie, Courtney, Haley and Heath; great 
nieces and nephews Ross, Justin, Nicole, Layton, Madeline, Jayce and 
Colt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert Eagon &amp; brother in-law Mark Krysl.

moved from Alamosa, CO to Jetmore 5 years ago. She was a homemaker and a
 secretary at the United Methodist Church for a short while and most 
recently was a secretary for Kindsvater Trucking in Dodge City.

She was a member of FCE and The Piecemakers, both of Jetmore.&nbsp; She 
loved to quilt, sew, knit, crochet and enjoyed fishing and camping and 
spending time with her grandchildren.

On September 7, 2013, she married Jimmy Mix in Pagosa Springs, CO.&nbsp; He survives.

Other survivors include: father, Gary (Susan) Rebel, La Crosse; son, 
Adam (Angie) Lopez, Pueblo, CO; two daughters, Sarah Soffel, Alamosa, 
CO, Crystal (Nate) Cornum, La Jara, CO; brother, Jeffery Rebel,

WASHINGTON (AP )—President Joe Biden's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/student-loan-forgiveness-biden-plan-d9c8e18774a744187c9af634bf4eb728">plan to forgive student loan debt</a>&nbsp;for millions of borrowers lost another battle in court on Monday when a federal appeals court panel agreed to a preliminary injunction halting the program while an appeal plays out.

The ruling by the three-judge panel from the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis came days after a federal judge in Texas blocked the program, saying it usurped Congress' power to make laws. The Texas case was appealed and the administration is likely to appeal the 8th Circuit ruling as well.

The debt forgiveness plan would cancel $10,000 in student loan debt for those making less than $125,000 or households with less than $250,000 in income. Pell Grant recipients, who typically demonstrate more financial need, would get an additional $10,000 in debt forgiven.

The cancellation applies to federal student loans used to attend undergraduate and graduate school, along with Parent Plus loans.

A federal judge on Oct. 20 allowed the program to proceed. But the 8th Circuit temporarily put the forgiveness plan on hold Oct. 21 while it considered an effort by the states of Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Arkansas and South Carolina to block the program.

The new ruling from the panel made up of three Republican appointees — one was appointed by President George W. Bush and two were appointed by President Donald Trump — extends the hold until the issue is resolved in court.

WASHINGTON (AP )—President Joe Biden’s plan to provide millions of borrowers with up to $20,000 apiece in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/student-loan-forgiveness-biden-plan-d9c8e18774a744187c9af634bf4eb728">federal student-loan forgiveness</a>&nbsp;has been blocked by a second federal court, leaving millions of borrowers to wonder if they'll get debt relief at all.

On Thursday,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-texas-education-donald-trump-student-loans-f2e944d85e95792089fa1e2fb9858287">U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman ruled</a>&nbsp;that the program usurped Congress’ power to make laws. The administration immediately filed a notice to appeal.

It's not the only challenge the plan faces. Last month, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/st-louis-missouri-kansas-nebraska-education-9b73de3404719e08a3910ed58e8481c7">8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals</a>&nbsp;in St. Louis put loan forgiveness on temporary hold while it considers a challenge from Kansas and five other Republican-led states.

The fate of the plan will likely eventually end up in the Supreme Court, meaning a final decision is a ways off.

The debt forgiveness plan announced in August would cancel $10,000 in student loan debt for those making less than $125,000 or households with less than $250,000 in income. Pell Grant recipients, who typically demonstrate more financial need, would get an additional $10,000 in debt forgiven.

College students qualify if their loans were disbursed before July 1. The plan makes 43 million borrowers eligible for some debt forgiveness, with 20 million who could get their debt erased entirely, according to the administration.

The Congressional Budget Office has said the program will cost about $400 billion over the next three decades.

The White House said 26 million people have applied for debt relief, and 16 million people had already had their relief approved.

Pittman — an appointee of former President Donald Trump based in Fort Worth, Texas — made it clear that he felt Biden overstepped his authority. He said the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act of 2003, commonly known as the HEROES Act, did not provide the authorization for the loan forgiveness program.

The law allows the secretary of education to waive or modify terms of federal student loans in times of war or national emergency. The administration said the COVID-19 pandemic created a national emergency.

But Pittman said such a massive program required clear congressional authorization.

THE PLAN FACES MANY OTHER LEGAL CHALLENGES

In September, the Republican-led states of Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and South Carolina filed suit to halt the program, arguing that the pandemic no longer qualifies as a national emergency. Justice Department attorney Brian Netter disagreed, telling U.S. District Judge Henry Autrey in October that student loan defaults have skyrocketed over the past 2 1/2 years.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/st-louis-missouri-kansas-nebraska-education-1818db4383863111b0263125d2eed73c">Autrey ruled on Oct. 20</a>&nbsp;that the states lacked standing, allowing the forgiveness plan to proceed. But the 8th Circuit temporarily halted it the next day while it considers a permanent block. That decision is still pending.

The White House on Friday discontinued accepting&nbsp;<a href="https://studentaid.gov/debt-relief/application">student loan forgiveness applications</a>

The plan has faced other legal challenges. In October,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/nation-politics/justice-barrett-rejects-appeal-over-biden-student-debt-plan/">Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett rejected an appeal</a>&nbsp;from a Wisconsin taxpayers group. A federal judge had earlier dismissed the group’s lawsuit, finding they didn’t have the legal right, or standing, to bring the case.

THE TEXAS RULING WAS A BIGGER BLOW TO THE PLAN

Pittman’s decision strikes down the underlying legal argument used to justify Biden’s plan. Previously, the White House has been able to dodge legal attacks made in lawsuits by tweaking details of the program.

One lawsuit argued that the automatic debt cancellation would leave borrowers paying heavier taxes in states that impose a tax on canceled debt. The administration responded by allowing borrowers to opt out. Another suit alleged that Biden’s plan would hurt financial institutions that earn revenue on certain kinds of federal student loans. The White House responded by carving those loans out of the plan.

The new ruling, however, argues that the HEROES Act does not grant authority for mass debt cancellation. The law grants the Education Department wide flexibility during national emergencies, but the judge ruled that it’s unclear whether debt cancellation was a necessary response to COVID-19, noting that Biden recently declared the pandemic over.

The legal situation is complicated because of the numerous lawsuits. It's likely that the Texas case and the lawsuit filed by Kansas and fiver other states will be appealed to the Supreme Court. Before it reaches that level, the 5th and 8th Circuit appeals courts — both dominated by conservative judges — will rule separately in each case.

The case before the 8th Circuit could end up in the Supreme Court soon, since the six Republican-led states have asked the appeals court to keep the program on hold while the case plays out. If the appeals court grants that request, the administration will likely ask the Supreme Court to intervene. The states also could go to the high court if their request is denied.

Likewise, the administration has signaled it will appeal the Texas ruling. If the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is asked to block Pittman’s ruling pending appeal, the losing side could then turn to the Supreme Court.

In either case, appellate courts would not issue a final ruling on the validity of the program, but on whether it can go forward while challenges proceed.

At the same time, emergency orders can signal how courts will ultimately decide a case. In January, the Supreme Court consolidated challenges to the administration’s authority to impose a vaccine-or-testing requirement on the nation’s large employers. A few days after hearing arguments, the court split 6-3 to block the requirement, saying the challengers were likely to prevail in the end. A separate vaccine mandate for most health care workers was allowed to proceed when the court concluded that a challenge to it was likely to fail.

COMMON SEARCH: ‘IS STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS CANCELED?’

Borrowers are confused about whether their debt will be canceled, or if they'll have to resume making payments on Jan. 1, when a pause prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic is set to expire.

After the Texas ruling, many hit the internet, asking Google: “Is student loan forgiveness canceled?” Overall search traffic for “student loan forgiveness” quadrupled Thursday night and had increased nearly tenfold by Friday morning, according to Google Trends data.

Some borrowers said they were skeptical they would ever see the relief, anyway.Brenna Zimmerman, who graduated from Kansas State University in 2021 with about $30,000 in debt, called the debt forgiveness “a little bit too good to be true." And even though the program would benefit her, Zimmerman, 24, now a graphics coordinator at a packaging company, wonders if it's a good idea.

“I think I’d be a fool not to apply," she said, adding, “I don’t think it’s necessarily fair, especially to people who chose not to go to school.”

Lauren Pete, a 20-year-old junior at Louisiana State University, has $10,000 in student debt and is hoping to go to graduate school. She called the benefits of the loan forgiveness program “a dream come true” that would ease the financial burden for her and for her parents, who didn’t go to college and worked hard to help her with tuition.

“All I want to do is make them proud and make this process much easier for them, especially because I have a younger brother who’s going to be starting (college) next fall,” Pete said.

When 25-year-old Hofstra University graduate Sarah Puckett heard about the plan, she couldn’t believe she might have some of her $26,000 debt forgiven.

“I was frantically calling my dad, frantically saying, what does this mean?” Puckett, now a TV producer for a true crime network, said. “Is this real? I feel like they’re going to take it away from us. I don’t believe it.”

Now, she worries that it really was too good to be true.

“I’m so excited to have applied, but you know, I’m not going to take it to the bank until I see that it’s actually happened,” Puckett said.

Frederick Bell, 30, of New Orleans, has $23,000 in student loan debt and was hopeful to be excused of all but $3,000 of that amount. The 2014 graduate of the University of Washington said being free from debt would allow him to consider furthering his education or buying a house.

“This (Texas) ruling definitely kind of like burst a lot of people’s dreams when it came to the financial freedom after this relief,” Bell said.

Pell Grant recipients, who typically demonstrate more financial need, would get an additional $10,000 in debt forgiven.College students qualify if their loans were disbursed before July 1. The plan makes 43 million borrowers eligible for some debt forgiveness, with 20 million who could get their debt erased entirely, according to the administration.The Congressional Budget Office has said the program will cost about $400 billion over the next three decades.The White House said 26 million people have applied for debt relief, and 16 million people had already had their relief approved.THE TEXAS CASEPittman — an appointee of former President Donald Trump based in Fort Worth, Texas — made it clear that he felt Biden overstepped his authority. He said the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act of 2003, commonly known as the HEROES Act, did not provide the authorization for the loan forgiveness program.The law allows the secretary of education to waive or modify terms of federal student loans in times of war or national emergency. The administration said the COVID-19 pandemic created a national emergency.But Pittman said such a massive program required clear congressional authorization.THE PLAN FACES MANY OTHER LEGAL CHALLENGESIn September, the Republican-led states of Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and South Carolina filed suit to halt the program, arguing that the pandemic no longer qualifies as a national emergency. Justice Department attorney Brian Netter disagreed, telling U.S. District Judge Henry Autrey in October that student loan defaults have skyrocketed over the past 2 1/2 years.<a href="https://apnews.com/article/st-louis-missouri-kansas-nebraska-education-1818db4383863111b0263125d2eed73c">Autrey ruled on Oct. 20</a>&nbsp;that the states lacked standing, allowing the forgiveness plan to proceed. But the 8th Circuit temporarily halted it the next day while it considers a permanent block. That decision is still pending.<figure>

The White House responded by carving those loans out of the plan.The new ruling, however, argues that the HEROES Act does not grant authority for mass debt cancellation. The law grants the Education Department wide flexibility during national emergencies, but the judge ruled that it’s unclear whether debt cancellation was a necessary response to COVID-19, noting that Biden recently declared the pandemic over.SUPREME COURT-BOUND?The legal situation is complicated because of the numerous lawsuits. It's likely that the Texas case and the lawsuit filed by Kansas and fiver other states will be appealed to the Supreme Court. Before it reaches that level, the 5th and 8th Circuit appeals courts — both dominated by conservative judges — will rule separately in each case.The case before the 8th Circuit could end up in the Supreme Court soon, since the six Republican-led states have asked the appeals court to keep the program on hold while the case plays out. If the appeals court grants that request, the administration will likely ask the Supreme Court to intervene. The states also could go to the high court if their request is denied.Likewise, the administration has signaled it will appeal the Texas ruling. If the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is asked to block Pittman’s ruling pending appeal, the losing side could then turn to the Supreme Court.In either case, appellate courts would not issue a final ruling on the validity of the program, but on whether it can go forward while challenges proceed.At the same time, emergency orders can signal how courts will ultimately decide a case. In January, the Supreme Court consolidated challenges to the administration’s authority to impose a vaccine-or-testing requirement on the nation’s large employers. A few days after hearing arguments, the court split 6-3 to block the requirement, saying the challengers were likely to prevail in the end. A separate vaccine mandate for most health care workers was allowed to proceed when the court concluded that a challenge to it was likely to fail.COMMON SEARCH: ‘IS STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS CANCELED?’Borrowers are confused about whether their debt will be canceled, or if they'll have to resume making payments on Jan. 1, when a pause prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic is set to expire.After the Texas ruling, many hit the internet, asking Google: “Is student loan forgiveness canceled?” Overall search traffic for “student loan forgiveness” quadrupled Thursday night and had increased nearly tenfold by Friday morning, according to Google Trends data.Some borrowers said they were skeptical they would ever see the relief, anyway.Brenna Zimmerman, who graduated from Kansas State University in 2021 with about $30,000 in debt, called the debt forgiveness “a little bit too good to be true." And even though the program would benefit her, Zimmerman, 24, now a graphics coordinator at a packaging company, wonders if it's a good idea.“I think I’d be a fool not to apply," she said, adding, “I don’t think it’s necessarily fair, especially to people who chose not to go to school.”Lauren Pete, a 20-year-old junior at Louisiana State University, has $10,000 in student debt and is hoping to go to graduate school. Appeals court keeps Biden student debt plan on hold

Dr. Bruce Hodges, 90, began collecting medical memorabilia as a hobby
 about 55 years ago. It started, he says, “as one item here and one item
 there,” until he had a handful of items to fill a curio cabinet in his 
waiting room.

“It just kind of grew accidentally until I became a serious collector,” he says, “and I’ve accumulated over 5,000 artifacts.”

Those artifacts are now <a href="https://www.auctionbymayo.com/search/auctions/all-sales/ending-soon/all-categories/all-locations?terms=medicine&amp;dist=any&amp;postal=&amp;items=24" target="_blank">up for auction</a>.

Hodges earned a medical degree from the University of Kansas and 
started practicing medicine in 1964. He and his wife, Cathy, who also 
has a medical background, served tours as medical missionaries in 
Africa, where he kept collecting.

Once his collection reached 1,000 to 2,000 items, Hodges says he started looking for a building.

<a href="https://www.medicineshalloffame.com/" target="_blank">Medicine’s Hall of Fame &amp; Museum</a>
 opened March 1, 2020, at the former site of the Johnson County Museum 
in Shawnee, Kansas, but closed a week later due to COVID-19 pandemic 
shutdowns.

In October, the museum closed for good due to low attendance and financial challenges.

Online bidding on the collection is open through Mayo Auction and 
Realty, of Belton, Missouri. In-person previews will take place Friday 
from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Bidding on items will close on Monday, Nov. 7, 
Wednesday, Nov. 9, and Thursday, Nov. 10.

Auctioneer Robert Mayo says it’s a unique situation.

“You
 never see this vast of a collection sell all at once,” Mayo says. “In 
fact, you're never going to see this type of collection be sold ever 
again, because it's not one collection, it's multiple collections.”

“And so it does take a lot of work, for sure, to catalog it and 
present it to all the collectors across the country that are interested 
in bidding on the different types of items here,” says Mayo.

There’s
 a 1915 Ford Model T touring car, and a doctor’s saddle bag from the 
1880s with original medications. Also included are two 1940s iron lungs,
 one designed for children, that were once staples in polio treatment.

“And it's very, very rare,” Hodges says of the pediatric iron lung. “Probably not another one outside of <a href="https://www.si.edu/object/posts_0c16ac483f508011a7a975f440eaf905" target="_blank">the Smithsonian Institution</a>.”

Other items in the collection include an assortment of patent 
medicines, such as “miracle cures” or tonics for liver and kidney 
conditions, an early 1900s shrunken head from the Jivaro tribe of 
Ecuador and Peru, and an 1870s wood and rawhide medicine drum used by 
the Chippewa tribe.

Hodges says he’s disappointed the “gem of a 
museum” didn’t really take off as a tourist destination — he sunk his 
own money into the venture to keep it going.

“But finally (I) just ran out of capital to sustain it,” he says. “So, it’s on the auction block.”

Hodges
 and his wife recently downsized, and he says they just don’t have the 
space to keep any items from the collection. But he hopes that others, 
maybe even some budding collectors, will enjoy it.

“People would 
just be amazed at the collection. And it is quite a variety, if I do say
 so,” he says. “There’s just nothing like it in the area for a hundred 
miles — even beyond that. It is a very unusual collection.”

Kansas doctor's 'unusual' medical artifact collection' for sale

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man charged in the drive-shooting at a home in Wichita that critically injured an 11-year-old girl has been sentenced to over 14-years in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney. In October, Purcell pleaded guilty to aggravated battery in the case.

Just after 12:30 a.m. Oct. 12, 2021 officers responded to&nbsp;a shooting in the 1400 block of North Harding in Wichita. They found the girl laying in her bed with a gunshot wound. On Oct. 14., police arrested&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18777609">Purcell</a>&nbsp;and originally charged him with&nbsp;aggravated battery, criminal discharge of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon by a felon.

Police reported an<a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/victim-of-shooting-family-needs-help?member=14541373&amp;sharetype=teams&amp;utm_campaign=p_na+share-sheet&amp;utm_medium=more&amp;utm_source=customer">&nbsp;11-year-old girl&nbsp;</a>was in the house and asleep in her bed when she was hit by the gunfire. She was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Police say four other people in the home at the time of the shooting were not injured.

Since Nov. 2017 Purcell was in one of several Kansas prisons following three convictions for aggravated robbery. The state also reported Purcell had over two dozen disciplinary violation during his time in prison. He was released in June, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

She was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Police say four other people in the home at the time of the shooting were not injured.Since Nov. 2017 Purcell was in one of several Kansas prisons following three convictions for aggravated robbery. The state also reported Purcell had over two dozen disciplinary violation during his time in prison. He was released in June, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Curtis Howard Archibald entered this life on January 8, 1949, in 
Norton, KS and left to enter his “Field of Dreams” on November 10, 2022,&nbsp; at Good Samaritan Hospital, Kearney, NE.

Arch was an avid baseball
 fan from a very young age. He played baseball in empty lots with his 
cousins and friends growing up in Norton and playing more seriously 
while his family lived in Westminster, Co. They moved back to Norton 
when he was in junior high. He participated in football, basketball, and
 track, considered those the only reason to attend high school. Oh, and 
the girls, of course. He graduated in 1967.

Arch enlisted in the 
United States Marine Corps after a year at Fort Hays State. He was sent 
to Vietnam in 1968 where he was a radio operator for his company. He was
 injured by shrapnel after being in the country for 1 ½ months and sent 
to Guam via hospital ship. Curt liked to say he was so good at his job 
they sent him back to Vietnam after his recovery. He mustered out of the
 service in 1970. He believed everything that came after in his life was
 "gravy" since he survived. Arch returned to Fort Hays State for another
 year before returning to Norton to help with the family distributing 
business.

Arch and Norma Bruggeman were married in October 1974. 
He loved his role as husband, best friend and lover to his wife. He 
greeted his children, Rayeann and Mike with much love and enthusiasm and
 became “Dad”. He coached both of their ball teams, sometimes running 
from one field to the next. He welcomed his three grandsons with wonder 
and delight, Jake, Max, and Eli, and became “Poppy” in his new role.

Arch
 loved his life and when someone would ask him how he was, he would 
always answer with "fantastic".  Sadly, his last few years were dampened
 by many health issues, but he never lost his sense of humor.  He was 
extremely good at telling bad jokes.

Arch is preceded in death by 
his parents, Don and Mary Lue Archibald; parents-in-law, Ambrose and 
Virginia Bruggeman; his grandparents; brothers-in-law Robert Machen and 
Kirk Allred. He is survived by his wife, Norma of the home; children,

grandsons, Jake (Andia) of Greenwood, MO, Maxwell and Elijah of Olathe,

Curtis Howard Archibald

Norma Ann Hawley passed away on November 10, 2022, at the Andbe 
Home. She was born on October 22, 1941, in Warsaw, Indiana, to Edith and
 LeRoy Hawley.

In 1944, the family moved to Pierceville, Kansas. 
Her family moved around because her father worked for Union Pacific 
Railroad. They lived in a box car in Tennis, Kansas, but went to school 
in Friends, Kansas.

In 1951, the family moved to Scott City, 
Kansas, where Norma graduated from High School in 1960. Then the family 
moved to Garden City, Kansas where Norma began working as a clerk for 
JCPenney. She worked there for 25 years. She also was a caregiver for 
her elderly parents.

In 1997, Norma moved to Phoenix, Arizona to 
be close to her sister, Edna Mead and family. In March of 2007, she 
moved to Hill City, Kansas. She did this to be near her niece, Pauline 
King. In October of 2010, Norma moved to Topeka, Kansas, to be near her 
cousin, Donald Johnson and family. Then in January 2013, she moved to 
Norton, Kansas, to be close to her sister, Wanda Davison and family.

In
 August of 2020, she moved to the Andbe Home in Norton, where she 
resided with her sister, Wanda. She remained there until her passing.

Norma
 enjoyed doing puzzles, cross stitching on plastic canvas, traveling and
 attending church. She also enjoyed going on bike rides, while in Hill 
City, she was often referred to as the “bike lady."

Norma is 
preceded in death by her parents; brother, Albert Hawley; sister, Edna 
Hawley Mead; brothers-in-law, Donald Davison and Delroy Mead. She is 
survived by her sister, Wanda Davison; cousins, Donald and Robert 
Johnson; nephews, Robert and Justin Mead; nieces, Debbie (Mead) Collins,
 Sherrie Mead, Pauline King, Sharon Avedisian, Carol (Hawley) Rohrbough,
 Marilyn Hawley, and sister-in-law, LeAnne Hawley.

Funeral 
services will be held 1:00 pm Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at the 
Cornerstone Church in Norton. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am – 
1:00 pm before the service at the church. Burial will be 1:00 pm

Norma Ann Hawley

Derril Lee Castor, 88, of Russell, Kansas, passed away peacefully Monday, October 24, 2022, at Russell Regional Hospital with his family by his side.

Derril was born August 8, 1934, in Torrington, Wyoming, the son of Glen and Ethel (Durham) Castor.&nbsp; He lived his early years in Arapahoe, Colorado with his parents and older brother, Delbert. During his elementary school years, the family had moved to Kansas in the Russell and Osborne areas. Derril moved schools often, but found his grounding in Osborne, Kansas through the connection of his coach, James Lewis “Lew” Comer. Lew helped find Osborne families with whom Derril could live with during high school. Derril was a hard worker and held several part-time jobs to support himself when he wasn’t atschool or practice for football, basketball, track, or baseball. He was class president his freshman and senior years and graduated from Osborne High School in 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves and served from 1957 to 1962.&nbsp;

While in Osborne, Derril met his life partner, Marvel J. Mitchell, when he was in 7th grade. Their friendship continued throughout high school. He and Marvel were married on November 21, 1959, at the First Christian Church in Osborne, Kansas. This union was blessed with two children; L’Mitchell and Lezlee.&nbsp; They have made Russell their home since 1963.

Derril attended Ft. Hays State University where he obtained a B.S. in Art Education in 1964 and an M.S. in Art in 1966. Derril began teaching at Natoma High School and then Ruppenthal Middle School in Russell. For the majority of his 33 year teaching career, Derril taught Arts and Crafts at Russell High School. When he wasn’t teaching, Derril farmed and ranched in Osborne County. He was a founding member of the Russell’s Original Art Review (ROAR) in Russell.&nbsp; He was a member of the St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church of Russell and later attended the St. John Lutheran Church. He loved making jewelry, pottery, ice cream, and beef jerky.&nbsp; He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and gardening. He especially loved watching and attending his grandsons’ activities, and traveling with Marvel and friends. His little jokes and sweet nature will be truly missed. Derril will always be remembered as a true gentle-man.&nbsp;

Derril’s surviving family include his wife of 62 years Marvel of the home; son, L’Mitchell Castor of Prairie Village, Kansas; daughter, Lezlee Ivy (Eric) of Parkville, Missouri; and four grandsons, Connor Castor, Nick Castor, Brock Ivy and Tate Ivy; brother, Larry Castor (Gayle) of Littleton, Colorado, their children Blaine and Rolna; niece Terri Crandall and nephews Jeff and Jay Castor. He also left several cousins and a host of friends.

Derril was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Delbert Castor.

Celebration of Derril’s life will be held at St. John Lutheran Church on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at 11:00 A.M.&nbsp; Private burial of ashes will take place at a later time.&nbsp;

Patricia Darlene Everhart of Moore, Oklahoma, passed away from this 
life to begin her eternal life in Heaven on November 3, 2022, at the age
 of 81. 

Patricia was born in Hays, Kansas, on October 12, 1941, the 
daughter of John A. Degenhardt and Albina R. (Hepp) Degenhardt. She grew
 up in Kansas and attended Girls Catholic High School in Hays, 
graduating with the Class of 1959. Ms. Everhart had a long and rewarding
 career managing the department of pediatrics billing office of The 
University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She celebrated her 
retirement in 2018 after many years of dedicated service.

Patricia was a nurturing, faithful, and loving person with a true 
servant’s heart. For over 50 years, she was a member of the St. Andrew 
Catholic Church in Moore. Throughout this time, she sang in choir, baked
 for funeral meals, and was in Music Ministry, which ministered to 
residents in various nursing homes, hospitals and prisons. She spent 
hours in prayer for her parish and was a prayer warrior for the parish 
prayer and rosary groups. She loved reading her prayer books and 
discussing the Word of God with her family and friends. Patricia lived 
her life with faith, compassion, forgiveness, and unconditional love, 
never expecting anything in return. She was a wonderful person with a 
heart spun from pure gold, and she will be dearly missed by all who were
 lucky enough to have known her.

She is preceded in death by a son, Charles Everhart, her parents, 
John and Albina Degenhardt, and an infant brother, John Degenhardt.

Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Jeffery 
Schlittenhardt and his wife Cindy of Oklahoma City, Kayla McNeill of 
Oklahoma City, John Schlittenhardt of Moore, David Schlittenhardt of 
Chickasha, and Michael Schlittenhardt of Moore; three sisters, Judy 
Kreutzer of Russell, Kansas, Mary Jo Hoffman and her husband Floyd of 
Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Donna Cooey and her husband Ralph of 
Longmont, Colorado; along with nine grandchildren, four 
great-grandchildren, and many other loving nieces, nephews and dear 
friends.

In Patricia’s memory, be kind, forgiving and compassionate towards others and always walk by faith.

hours in prayer for her parish and was a prayer warrior for the parish 
prayer and rosary groups. She loved reading her prayer books and 
discussing the Word of God with her family and friends. Patricia lived 
her life with faith, compassion, forgiveness, and unconditional love, 
never expecting anything in return. She was a wonderful person with a 
heart spun from pure gold, and she will be dearly missed by all who were
 lucky enough to have known her.She is preceded in death by a son, Charles Everhart, her parents, 
John and Albina Degenhardt, and an infant brother, John Degenhardt.Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Jeffery 
Schlittenhardt and his wife Cindy of Oklahoma City, Kayla McNeill of 
Oklahoma City, John Schlittenhardt of Moore, David Schlittenhardt of 
Chickasha, and Michael Schlittenhardt of Moore; three sisters, Judy 
Kreutzer of Russell, Kansas, Mary Jo Hoffman and her husband Floyd of 
Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Donna Cooey and her husband Ralph of 
Longmont, Colorado; along with nine grandchildren, four 
great-grandchildren, and many other loving nieces, nephews and dear 
friends.In Patricia’s memory, be kind, forgiving and compassionate towards others and always walk by faith.

Emilio Rodriguez-Lopez, 24, died November 9, 2022, at St. Anthony 
Hospital, Lakewood, Colorado.&nbsp; He was born on October 15, 1998, at Dodge 
City, the son of Raymond Lopez and Catherine Rodriguez-Herrera.

Emo was a lifetime resident of Dodge City and a 2017 graduate of 
Dodge City High School. He was active in the band during high school as 
well as just hanging out with friends. Emilio earned his CNA Certificate
 and was always willing to be a caretaker for family, friends and 
others. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing video games, 
cooking and his pets. Emilio was a manager at El Charro restaurant and 
was also a caregiver for the Fischer family. He continued his service 
with the Fisher family on the family farm assisting with whatever they 
needed.

Emilio is survived by his mother, Catherine Rodriguez-Herrera and 
husband Robert of Dodge City; father, Raymond Lopez and Liz of Texas; a 
brother, Anthony Rodriguez of Dodge City; sister, Isabel Rodriguez of 
Dodge City; two step siblings, Raymond and Enchantra Lopez; grand 
parents, Richard and Patricia Rodriguez of Dodge City; nephew, Elijah

Pauline (Felder) Oborny was born on November 18, 1918, on a farm near
 Claflin, Kansas. Andy and Steffie Felder were her proud parents. As she
 grew up, she lived in Claflin and later moved to a farm near Rush 
Center, Kansas. Pauline passed away on November 7, 2022, at the Denver 
In-Patient Hospice Care Center. She was 103 years old.

She had brothers Joe Felder (Kinsley), Vernon Felder (Nekoma), and 
Louis Felder (Wakeeney/Hays). Her sisters were Sister Dorothy Felder 
(Great Bend), Bertha Johnson (Andover), and Marie Vondracek (Timken). 
All are deceased except for Louis whom is in Hays. Pauline graduated 
from LaCrosse High School in 1938. After high school, she worked as a 
telephone operator in Great Bend, Kansas.

After John C. Oborny returned from World War II, they were married on
 October 20, 1947. They lived shortly “on the hill” just west of Rush 
Center, Kansas. They purchased a store in Timken, Kansas called the 
“Oborny Mercantile” where they spent several years growing their family 
of seven children: Connie (Sperberg/Denver), John (Oborny/Wichita), 
Marietta (Jones/Wichita), Mark (Oborny/Yukon, Oklahoma), Rosemary 
(Wiley/Wichita), Louis (Oborny/Kansas City, Missouri), and Theresa 
(Oborny/Wichita).

In May of 1967, John and Pauline moved to Great Bend after selling 
the store in Timken. In 1984, John passed away. Pauline continued to 
live in Great Bend until she moved to Derby.

She fractured her hip in 2011 and soon after moved to Denver. She 
began a water class at National Jewish Hospital and just loved it. She 
was the oldest person in the class and everyone in the class loved to 
tease her because she was totally afraid of the water. She also loved 
her church, Mother of God, and made many friends there.

In 2017, she fell and broke her other hip. She moved into Garden 
Plaza Assisted Living Center in Aurora where she also made friends, 
loved it and called it home.

Pauline enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved 
going to church! She enjoyed crocheting, baking, doing arts and crafts, 
and playing cards, dominos, and bingo. She enjoyed being included with 
her great grandchildren’s extra-curricular activities.

All of her children are still alive. Her grandchildren are: Jason and
 Scott Sperberg, Erica Hickerson, Tricia Sanders, Lindsey Jones, Kristyn
 Abercrombie, Casey Taylor, Travis Oborny, David Wiley, and Haley and 
Lucas Oborny. Great Grandchildren include: Austin and Ashley Sperberg, 
Elle and Grace Sperberg, Calais and Flint Hickerson, Ollie and Isaac 
Sanders, Elliott Abercrombie, Christina, Brianna, Luke and Ave Taylor, 
Christopher and Clayton Oborny, and Penny and Orion Wiley.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 18,
 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home with a rosary said at 10:00 a.m. Graveside
 service will then follow at 11:30 a.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Park in 
Great Bend, Kansas, with Father Prakash Kola presiding.

More than 20 KS schools have American Indian-themed mascots

 — The Kansas Board of Education recommended the removal of American 
Indian-themed mascots and branding from Kansas school districts, saying 
American Indian students deserve to feel comfortable in schools across 
the state.

The mascot debate has been ongoing, with the Advisory
 Council for Indigenous Education recommending in October that the BOE 
and the Kansas Board of Regents make a priority of persuading local 
school officials to abandon culturally offensive branding. The council 
said this transition should be completed in three to five years.&nbsp;

Across the state, potentially offensive mascots include the Braves, Red Raiders, Warriors, Thunderbirds, Indians and Redskins. Hays High School uses the Indian as its mascot.

The Board of Education doesn’t have 
the authority to make local schools change their mascots, so it is 
unclear how much effect the recommendation will have. Members say the 
recommendation is more about starting important conversations than 
forcing change.&nbsp;

The BOE accepted the council’s 
recommendation Thursday, with seven members voting in favor of the 
recommendation. Members Jean Clifford and Ben Jones abstained from the 
vote, while conservative Michelle Dombrosky was the only dissenting 
vote.

Dombrosky said she believed the board
 didn’t have the authority to make the decision, and that local school 
districts should make the choice.&nbsp;

“They have pride, they have 
traditions, they’re not going to understand,” Dombrosky said. “It’s 
going to take awhile for education, curriculum that you’re working on. 
You’re building that. Since it’s a strong recommendation on that part, 
I’m not sure why we’re taking a vote at the state board. Because 10 
people are deciding for the rest of those communities.”

Other board members pushed back 
against Dombrosky, saying it was important to take a stand. Member Ann 
Mah said with more than 90% of American Indian students attending public
 schools, the impact of offensive mascots was significant.&nbsp;

“These 10 people are not deciding 
anything for anyone,” Mah said. “All we’re doing is asking these schools
 that have these mascots and branding to start a conversation about is 
this mascot, is this branding, tied to real learning? Or is it an empty 
moniker that makes fun of other sovereign nations? So we’re just asking 
them to start the conversation.”&nbsp;

Board member Deena Horst represents 
District 6, which covers school districts in Douglas, Chase, Jefferson 
and Shawnee counties, among others. Horst mentioned that all of the 
state’s reservations are contained in her district. She said her 
decision was not influenced by that, but by her memories as a student at
 Clearwater High School, where the mascot is the Indians.&nbsp;

Horst referenced the tomahawk chop, a move in which sports fans pretend to be waving a tomahawk.&nbsp;

“If I was a member of a tribe, and I 
was in a competitive environment, I would take that as making fun of me.
 And bullying is another component. It’s a way to show that you can 
overtake someone else and that makes the person who actually is a Native
 American — if it makes them feel less of a person, it’s wrong,” Horst 
said.&nbsp;

Some Kansas school districts have 
already decided to ditch offensive imagery. Atchison dropped the labels 
Redmen and Braves, and Wichita North High School voted to remove its 
Redskins mascot name in 2021. Other districts are resisting change, such
 as Manhattan High School, which retains its mascot, the Indians.&nbsp;

The council said mascots like the Redmen and Braves damages indigenous perception and encourage “narrow-minded
 stereotypes that represent American Indians as exotic, warlike people

members have been elected and will take their seats in 2023.

Violet “Vee” Viola (Kraft) Griffiths, 94, passed away at the Great Plains Medical Center on Saturday, October 29, 2022. Her two surviving children at the time of her death were in attendance.

Vee was born on July 7, 1928, at her family’s home in Grainton, Nebraska. She was the third of eight children born to Peter and Lucille (Nestor) Kraft.

She married William Frederick Griffiths on October 26, 1946 in Oberlin, Kansas. Vee and Willie lived in Dickens and north Hayes County during the early years of their marriage. They moved to Wallace, Nebraska in 1959 where Vee lived until recent years when she moved to the Centennial Assisted Living Facility in North Platte, Nebraska.&nbsp; Vee's husband preceded her in death.

Vee and Willie raised three children. Gary William Griffiths resides in Brighton, Colorado. Dale Lee Griffiths (married to Sharon) lived in Coppell, Texas and passed away in 2020. Joan Marie Payton (married to Andrew) resides in Bakersfield, California.

Vee loved not only her own children dearly but all children. She worked for the Wallace Public School District for 40 years in various positions: child care, a bus driver, a dish washer, and as a teacher's assistant. She often commented on enjoying the camaraderie with fellow school employees and watching the children of the community grow.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at the Wallace Methodist Church with Pastor Shanon Williams officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in Morning View Cemetery in Wallace.
