Roque Florez Garcia passed away on October 1, 2022, in Stockton,
 Kansas, at the age of 70. He was born on August 16, 1952, in Larned, 
Kansas, to Modesto and Ventura (Florez) Garcia. He was married to Brenda 
(Hunter) Garcia on October 20, 1973, in Stockton, KS. They were blessed 
with two children: Cory and Donna.

Roque grew up in St.
 John, Kansas, and after high school he attained an Associate Degree from
 NCK Technical College in Beloit, KS. He worked many years in 
maintenance at Valley View Apartments and then the Rooks County 
Courthouse in Stockton, retiring two years ago. Roque took much pride in
 his duties at the courthouse and enjoyed working for all the people. He
 was a member of Stockton Lions Club.

Roque loved his 
family and spending time with his grandkids. He enjoyed Chiefs and KU 
Basketball games which he oftentimes attended with his good friends, 
Duane Harris and Dennis Bedore. He also loved music and playing the 
drums with his band, Rolling Thunder.

Roque is survived
 by his children, Cory and Donna Garcia of Stockton; siblings, Sally 
Devena of Buhler, KS, Ted (Sandy) Garcia of Wichita, Lupe (Gerry) Hudson
 of St. John, KS, Luis (Susan) Garcia of Hutchinson, KS, Margarita 
(Gayle) Kent of St. John, Mary Peschka of St. John, Jesse (Gladys) 
Garcia of St. John, and Nick (LaDona) Garcia of Silverlake, KS; and 4 
grandchildren, Emil, Jake, Jo and Zeke.

He is preceded 
in death by his parents, Modesto and Ventura Garcia; brother, John 
Garcia; brother-in-law, Wayne Devena; and his wife, Brenda who he gets 
to celebrate their 49th Anniversary in heaven with.

A 
funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at 11 AM at 
the Stockton United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the 
Stockton Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at 
the funeral home in Stockton.

spent with her taking her to fairs, carnivals, and the farm.

He
 is survived by his mother, Barbara Princ of Wilson, KS; step-daughter, 
Meshasky Valcorza of Salina; brother John Princ of Beloit, KS; and 
sister Anita Princ of Salina.

He is preceded in death by his father, John Princ.

The National Weather Service is warning that a hot, dry and windy Monday will increase the risk of wildfires to start the week.

"Avoid any outdoor burning or anything that may produce a spark in these conditions this afternoon," the NWS said.

Sustained wind of 16 to 22 mph will be accompanied by gusts up to 33 mph, and relative humidity across most of western Kansas will be below 20 percent.

There is a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms Monday night and into Tuesday morning before skies clear Tuesday evening. The next chance of rain in the Hays area is a 40 percent chance of showers Friday, the NWS predicted.

NWS: Hot, dry, windy Monday raises wildfire concerns

The closure of Pine Street just south of 6th Street in Hays originally planned for today is being postponed until Monday, October 10th.

On Monday, October 10th, Pine Street will be closed to through traffic just south of 6th Street for waterline work. 6th Street will remain open, and Pine Street should be back open to traffic by the end of that day.

The Child Care Task Force of Ellis County is trying to develop a child care substitute pool.

Members of the task force further discussed the pool at a meeting on Tuesday.

Providers expressed concerns about the inability to find workers to fill in for themselves or other staff members when emergencies or sickness arise.

This can result in providers having to close temporarily, as well as adding to stress and burnout for the providers.

Temporary closures put a burden on parents, who say it is almost impossible to find alternative care on short notice and often have to miss work to take care of the displaced or sick children.

A substitute pool subcommittee has been meeting to explore the formation of such a pool.

On Tuesday, task force members discussed the need to pay an adequate wage to child care substitutes, managing the substitute pool list and issues of credentials.

The task force has not set an hourly wage for the substitutes yet. However, local child care providers have bemoaned low pay for child care workers.

USD 489 has offered to let the task force use its substitute teacher software to create a database for the child care substitute list.

The task force plans to apply for a $20,000 state Rural Champions grant. That would provide a part-time employee at 20 hours a week, who could solely focus on child care. The Hays Chamber has offered to provide the 25 percent in matching contributions if Hays is selected for the grant.

The Rural Champion grants are offered by the Kansas Department of Commerce, and the selection process is in October.

Sarah Wasinger, Hays Chamber director and task force member, said if Hays is selected for the grant, the Champion employee could work on developing the substitute pool database, among other duties.

Under state licensing requirements, anyone who works more than several hours in child care has to meet the same requirements as full-time providers. This includes a physical, tuberculosis test, background check, and health and safety training.

Donna Hudson-Hamilton, Early Childhood Connections director and task force member, said she thought the task force should try to recruit students from Fort Hays State University for the pool.

The students could gain valuable experience working with children and possibly receive paid internship credit, she said.

She also suggested the pool pay for training for new pool members as an incentive for joining the pool.

Although members of the task force have discussed trying to offer child care accreditation classes to high school students, Hudson-Hamilton said Hays USD 489 officials have said they wished to delay implementing that track at the high school until next year.

Task force member and State Rep. Barb Wasinger, R-111th District, said she thought requiring full accreditation for substitutes who may fill in for only an hour or two is too much to ask.

She said she hopes the pool could work with regulators so people who are needed for only short periods could also be used by providers.

Sarah Wasinger said the subcommittee had discussed having some sort of feedback process so providers could evaluate their experiences with pool substitutes. She also said she thought having a job fair during which prospective pool members could meet providers would be a good way to kick off the program.

The task force members also discussed other possible funding sources for work to expand child care in the community.

Community Development Block Grants for the first time this year will be available for child care projects. City and county governments can apply for up to $750,000.

The funds must be used for new construction, renovations of existing buildings, land acquisition, or engineering or architectural fees. The grants can't be used to fund operational expenses.

The task force has received a $30,000 matching grant from the Robert E. and Patricia Schmidt Foundation but needs to acquire the $30,000 match for those funds.

Task force members have discussed applying for a Dane G. Hansen Foundation grant to further the task force's efforts to organize the substitute pool and will be considering an application to the Patterson Family Foundation for a grant in 2023.

The task force will host a series of focus groups in November to update the task force on community needs since the task force's survey that was conducted a year ago.

"We have made some progress by different child care capacities being added," Sarah Wasinger said. "We obviously know we have more work that we need to do and how do we honor what our community says their needs and preferences are."

As part of this process, task force members hope to better determine how grant opportunities might align with community needs, Wasinger said.

Betty Johnson of the Dane G. Hansen Foundation is scheduled to host the focus groups.

Nationally 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men have experienced gender-based violence by an intimate
partner or ex-intimate partner (CDC, 2020). In addition, sexual minority groups within the LGBTQ+
community report levels of intimate partner violence at rates equal or higher than those of
heterosexuals (VAWnet, 2010). Domestic violence is a leading contributor of injuries, chronic health
issues, high-risk health behaviors, and creates a significant strain on the healthcare system. Growing
evidence shows the long-term impact of emotional and mental trauma from violence carries an
additional likelihood of disease and illness. It also is estimated that the cost of gender-based violence
to US society, including health costs and productivity losses, would be $9.3 billion annually.


Domestic violence takes on many forms. It can be verbal, emotional, psychological, digital, sexual,
and/or physical abuse. It can be extreme jealousy, possessiveness, unwanted touching, coercion, and
excessive arguments. And it is ALL about power and control. Domestic violence occurs in every
community across the country, and can happen to anyone regardless of age, race, gender, religion,
sexual orientation, or economic status. In Kansas alone, domestic violence claimed 34 lives in 2020
(KBI, 2020).

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a hit-and-run accident and after asking the public for help to locate a pickup and driver have made an arrest.

On Sunday afternoon, police arrested&nbsp;Orie N. Holt, 35, Nortonville, on requested charges of failure to stop at an accident that resulted in great bodily harm, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Just after 6:40p.m. Saturday police responded to an injury accident at 14th and U.S.59 involving a pedestrian and a pick-up truck that had left the scene, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Richard Burge, 42, Atchison, was walking southbound across U.S.59 when he was struck by westbound pickup truck.

The truck continued westbound on U.S.59 without stopping. Burge sustained serious injuries. EMS transported him to Amberwell Hospital and subsequently he was air-lifted to a Kansas City hospital.&nbsp;

A NEIL DIAMOND TRIBUTE

Harold Larson was born on Oct 11, 1937, and passed away on Sept 30, 2022.

He was born in Tescott, the son of Lambert and Marie Larson. He was 
raised by Walter and Lena Dodge. He had five brothers and sisters.

Harold married Royanne Young 64 years ago. Together they have six 
children: Shelly, Julie, Cindy, Mike, Joe (deceased) and Dawn. He has 16
 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He loved spending time 
with his family and telling them stories for hours.

He was a professional carpenter by trade, estimator, architect and 
engineer for more than 50 years. He designed and builtmeat-packing 
plants, residences, schools and businesses in Salina, all across Kansas 
and in other states. He was the land developer of Valley View Addition 
and Knoll Crest Estates. He owned Larson Construction Company and 
Century Sales and co-owned LAM-CO.In 1976 he designed and built the 
gazebo for Salina’s bicentennial celebration. This gazebo is now housed 
in the Jerry Ivy Park.

Harold loved to travel and was an avid reader. His passions were 
horses, hot rods and music. He enjoyed collecting car memorabilia and 
western artifacts and was a history buff. He liked to attend swap meets 
and trade shows and was quite a story teller.

Visitation will be Monday, October 3, 5-7 pm at Ryan Mortuary. 
Services will be Tuesday, October 4, at 10:00 am, at the Ryan Mortuary.

Harold Larson

Dwayne Ezra Simon passed away Monday, September 26th, 2022, at the 
Sheridan County Health Complex, Long Term Care. He was 88 years old.

Dwayne
 was born May 5th, 1934, on the family farm in rural Sheridan County, to
 Murl and Stella (Sterrett) Simon the oldest of four children. He 
attended Bee Hive country school through his eighth-grade year, then 
attended Hoxie High School graduating with the class of 1952. Dwayne 
learned to drive tractors and trucks very young as a child and began 
helping on the farm. He developed mechanical and electrical skills which
 he used all his life and could work on anything and fix it. The 
children do not remember “repair men “ coming to the home for hardly 
anything because their dad “fixed it.”  When Dwayne was growing up and 
working with the cattle on the farm silage was still fed with a 
pitchfork and chores were a big part of the day. Dwayne loved cattle and
 horses and passed that love on too many of his children and 
grandchildren. He participated in 4-H and was a part of Saline Valley 
4-H club. Dwayne rode horses on the farm and many recall his horse 
Smokey that was a favorite. Entertainment was getting together with 
family and friends usually at a church social event. He was proud of the
 fact that his family was instrumental in founding Mt. Pleasant Church 
and over the years he shared his Christian faith with many that he came 
across on the road while driving trucks. In later years he went with a 
church group to Louisiana and helped provide needed services after 
hurricane devastation. That became a ministry focus for him in these 
recent days.

On December 21, 1952, Dwayne was united in
 marriage to Ila Richards at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in rural 
Studley, KS. For a short time, he worked in Colorado for the telephone 
company climbing many a pole. Then they returned to the family homestead
 just west of the church. Dwayne raised cattle and hogs and to 
supplement the family income he did custom hay work with many an early 
morning in the hay field swathing and then baling for many neighbors. 
Cowboy as he was known began trucking and hauled grain, livestock, and 
hot oil for highway construction. He took many trips to Kansas City to 
haul wheat to the terminal there. Over the years he had his own trucks 
and sometimes worked for various trucking companies. Trucking took him 
all over the country and none of the family can remember any serious 
accidents. He always said, “treat the other driver like it is your 
mother.”  He was an advocate for the industry even testifying at the 
State House on issues.

Dwayne will be missed by his 
three children, Curtis Simon and wife Deb of Quinter, Kansas; Melanie 
and husband Kevin Cooper of Hoxie, Kansas; and David Simon and wife Leah
 of Brighton, CO; grandchildren, Stephen Simon and wife Sarah of 
Quinter, KS; Becky and husband Lance Bruna of Barnes, KS; Jaime McMillan
 of Joplin, MO; Jesse Cooper and wife Sydney of Fayetteville, GA; Justin
 Cooper and wife Lindsay of El Dorado, KS; one brother, Lawrence Simon 
and wife Katherine of Morland, KS; great grandchildren Taylor and 
Madison Bruna, Oliver and Autumn Simon; Derrick, Colton and Hannah 
McMillan; Tatum and Micah Cooper; Kayden and Kolby Cooper; and a host of
 extended family and friends.

&nbsp;He was preceded in death
 by his parents, two infant children, Dwana and Danny Simon, a brother 
Fred Simon and a sister, Ruth Kerman.

A Celebration of 
Life is planned for Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at the Mount Pleasant 
Baptist Church, rural Studley, at 10:30 A.M. Visitation will be Monday, 
October 3, 2022, from 2:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M, with family receiving 
friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, 
Hoxie, Kansas. Inurnment will be later in the Baker Township Cemetery in
 Quinter, Kansas. Date to be announced and all are welcome. 

Memorials 
are suggested to Sheridan Health Complex LTC and Samaritan’s Purse 
Operation Christmas Child Ministry (Shoeboxes).&nbsp; This service will be

Stefanie Linn Turner, 44, passed away September 27, 2022, in Wamego.

She was born July 4, 1978, in Larned, the daughter of Philip Alan and Ann Vratil Schreiber.

A Larned resident until 2001, she moved to Wamego where she was the 
head of the billing department at Manhattan Dermatology. She was a 
member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned. She was always a helper 
and was active in the kids wrestling club. She loved music, reading, 
dogs, fishing, taking pictures, being outdoors, decorating for the 
holidays, watching the Chiefs and all K-State sports. She especially 
loved watching her kids, nieces and nephews in sports and all their 
activites.

On October 23, 1999, she married Cody Joe Turner at Larned; he survives.

Other survivors include: mother, Ann Schreiber, Larned; children, 
Adreana and Dalton Turner, of the home; sister, Emily (Michael) Racette,
 Larned; nieces and nephews, Jocelynn, Logan, Brayson, Camden, Kennedy, 
Savannah; and her beloved dogs, Mocha and Ashford.

She was preceded in death by: her father, Philip Schreiber; 
grandfather, Leon Schreiber, grandparents, Bill and Mildred Hanshew, and
 Leo and Nina Vratil.

Memorial mass will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 7, 2022, at Sacred 
Heart Catholic Church, Larned, with Father Bernard Felix presiding. 
Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2022 at

Marilyn (Klaus) Leiker, 80, Hays, died Thursday, September 29, 2022, at her home.

She was born March 14, 1942, in Hays, 
the daughter of Paul and Emmerentia (Haselhorst) Werth.&nbsp; In 1960, she 
graduated from Girls Catholic High School.&nbsp; She was the owner of Klaus 
Carpet.&nbsp; On June 2, 1962 she was united in marriage to Norman J. Klaus 
in Schoenchen, and they celebrated nearly 34 years of marriage before he
 preceded her in death on May 24, 1996.&nbsp; On June 30, 2001, she was 
united in marriage to Alexius “Alex” Leiker.&nbsp; He preceded her in death 
on February 2, 2020.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church and the VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include her two sons: Neil 
Klaus and wife Sondra of Hays and Nolan Klaus and companion Shelley of 
Olathe, four stepsons: Curt Leiker and wife Davina of Greeley, Wes 
Leiker and wife Jenni of Hays, Todd Leiker of Olathe, and Mike Leiker 
and wife Kelly of Hays, 14 grandchildren: Adam Klaus, Amber Albers and 
husband Kord, Mackenzie Klaus, Matthew Leiker, Bethany Boschert and 
husband Ian, Anjel Leiker, Alexis Leiker and husband Jason Banning, 
Emily Leiker and husband Nicholas Schmidt, Hannah Leiker, Brett Leiker, 
Nathan Leiker, Truan Leiker, Lizzie Leiker, and Jessica Leiker, four 
great grandchildren, four brothers: Arlen Werth and wife Gay of Great

Church with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St.

and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel

on February 2, 2020.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church and the VFW Auxiliary.Survivors include her two sons: Neil 
Klaus and wife Sondra of Hays and Nolan Klaus and companion Shelley of

Charles “Charlie” Joseph Hoch passed away Thursday, September 29, 2022, 
in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 63. He was born January 20, 1959, in 
Wilson, Kansas, to Rudy and Violette (Lank) Hoch. Charlie married 
Melanie Ann McComb on August 1, 1981, in Stockton, Kansas. They enjoyed 
41 years of fun and adventure together. Charlie grew up in 
Wilson and graduated from Wilson High School in 1977. He received his 
Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Education from Fort Hays State 
University in 1981. He taught Industrial Arts, Technology Education, and
 Drivers Education at Royal Valley High School in Hoyt, Kansas, from 
1982-2013, retiring after 31 years of service. He was also a high school
 track coach many of those years. After retiring from teaching, Charlie 
started a handyman service putting to use his woodworking and general 
“fix-it” skills. It was said by many that Charlie could fix anything, 
and he took pride in the quality of his work and being able to help 
others. He was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. 
 Charlie had a passion for British sports cars. He was a founding member
 of the Topeka British Car Club and served as the club’s president for 
many years. He and Melanie enjoyed several adventurous trips across the 
U.S. in their Triumph Spitfire and MGA. He was also a member of the Lake
 Sherwood Sailing Club where he enjoyed competing in the sailing races. 
He also enjoyed boating, fishing, and entertaining friends and family on
 the lake. Charlie had quite an interest in black powder shooting and 
target shooting. He participated in competition shooting and was skilled
 in hitting the bullseye. Some of Charlie’s best memories were made 
during the many vacations he and Melanie took together. Some of their 
favorite places to travel were Colorado, the gulf coast of Florida, the 
Caribbean, and Mexico. Charlie is survived by his wife, 
Melanie, of Topeka; sisters, Toni (Mike) Pflughoeft of Ellsworth, and 
Sydney (Bill) Connelly of Kingman, Arizona; brothers, Joe (Linda) Hoch 
of Des Moines, Iowa, and John (DeAnne) Hoch of Wilson; and many nieces 
and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudy and Violette Hoch.

Charles 'Charlie' Joseph Hoch

Theresa (Braun) Kuhn, age 88, of Victoria, Kansas, passed away Friday, September 30, 2022, at Via Christi Village Care Center Hays, Kansas.

She was born December 6, 1933, to Raymond P. and Agnes (Staab) Braun on the Braun family farm two miles west of Victoria, and assisted by Doctor Bert Anderson.

She married Oliver A. Kuhn on April 18. 1953, at St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Victoria. &nbsp;He preceded her in death on August 1, 2004.

Theresa was a homemaker, a farmer’s wife, working with her husband whether it was cattle, hogs or harvest. &nbsp;She worked with her husband and son, as traffic controller and photographer for many years on all the house moving jobs they completed.&nbsp;

She lived all her life on the farm and attended Victoria High School. &nbsp;Theresa was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, the St. Fidelis Daughters of Isabella, and the Victoria V.F.W. Auxiliary. &nbsp;

She enjoyed her beautiful peonies in her huge yard, her vegetable garden and blackberries. &nbsp;She baked lots of harts and kuchens for funeral dinners. &nbsp;Her family was very precious to her, attending all of her grandsons sports activities, and no patching or sewing job was impossible. &nbsp;She was a seamstress for many years making formals and wedding dresses. &nbsp;

She is survived by her son, Robert Kuhn and wife, Debbie, Victoria, KS; her daughter Sharon Bleske and husband, Calvin, Victoria, KS; her grandson, Jordan Bleske and companion, Marcy Gaines; Ryan Bleske and wife, Kaitlynn; her great grandson, Kelton Bleske; her brother, John Braun and wife, Josie, Victoria, KS, her sister-in-law, Stella Braun, Hays, KS; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Theresa is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Kathleen Thomas on March 19, 2013; her brothers, Charles Braun and wives, Lucille and Lillian; Albert Braun; Elmer Braun; her sisters, Lillian&nbsp;Braun; Clara Baier and husband, Loren;&nbsp;Irene Leiker and husband, Clarence; Fidelia&nbsp;Honas and husband Eddie; her sister-in-law, Lavina (Kuhn) Vonfeldt and husband, Lavern. &nbsp;This obituary was composed and written by Theresa.

Theresa (Braun) Kuhn

Lyndell May Dykes, age 79, of WaKeeney, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 25, 2022 in WaKeeney. She&nbsp;was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on June 15, 1943, to Gladys and Roy Dykes.&nbsp; Lyndell lived in Cheyenne through high school.&nbsp; She was in the first graduating class of Cheyenne East High School in 1961, where she was a member of the National Honor Society.&nbsp; Lyndell went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Hastings College in 1965.&nbsp; Upon graduation from Hastings College, she earned a prestigious grant to the Parson's School of Design in New York City where she studied art and worked for about two years.&nbsp; She decided to pursue a Master's degree at Fort Hays State and made Kansas her permanent home. Lyndell spoke four languages - English, French, Italian, and Spanish.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She taught high school art in Hill City for several years.&nbsp; She also owned The Studio in WaKeeney for 20+ years where she was an expert framer providing custom frames for many customers. Lyndell had the privilege of framing all of Dr. John Cody's original prints, which eventually hung on display at the Smithsonian and later at Johns Hopkins.

In May of 1979, Lyndell accepted a position with High Plains Mental Health Center to apply her teaching and art experience in working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. She worked in the partial hospital program teaching life skills and assisting clients in gaining the skills to live more independently. She became a licensed substance counselor and provided payee support for those needing assistance. Both clients and staff appreciated her compassion and her genuine concern for each individual. Because of her compassion, kindness and ability to hold the line, some clients referred to her as “Mother Teresa with an Attitude."&nbsp; She served the people of Northwest Kansas for 23 years.

&nbsp;She loved to travel, listen to music, play the violin, paint, play cards, golf with friends, and work in her greenhouse and garden. Throughout her lifetime, she loved her kitties as close friends.&nbsp; Lyndell had an abundance of friends; she never met a stranger.&nbsp; She was a bit of a foodie and loved peanut butter, chocolate, and all things lemon.&nbsp; Lyndell had a great dislike of the color green, which her brother teased her about profusely, and she and her nieces laughed about often.

Lyndell is survived by her brother, Howard G. Dykes (Jackie) of Cheyenne, Wyoming; nieces, Stacy Maestas (Christopher) and Kimberly Southworth (Jerome) who also live in Cheyenne; great nephews, Garrett Maestas (Haley) and Reagan Kosowicz; great nieces, Lakiea Jenkins (Jordan), Brenna Kosowicz, and Hannah Maestas; four great great nephews and one great great niece; her trusty companion, Dusty the Black Cat; and her adoptive families, too many to name, in WaKeeney.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gladys and Roy Dykes; numerous aunts and uncles, and life-long friends over the years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Her family and close friends will host a reception with light refreshments to celebrate Lyndell’s life on Saturday, October 8, from 11:00 to 1:00 at the WaKeeney Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 332 N 6th Street, WaKeeney, KS. Use the East entrance.

 </figure>Lyndell May Dykes, age 79, of WaKeeney, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 25, 2022 in WaKeeney. She&nbsp;was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on June 15, 1943, to Gladys and Roy Dykes.&nbsp; Lyndell lived in Cheyenne through high school.&nbsp; She was in the first graduating class of Cheyenne East High School in 1961, where she was a member of the National Honor Society.&nbsp; Lyndell went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Hastings College in 1965.&nbsp; Upon graduation from Hastings College, she earned a prestigious grant to the Parson's School of Design in New York City where she studied art and worked for about two years.&nbsp; She decided to pursue a Master's degree at Fort Hays State and made Kansas her permanent home. Lyndell spoke four languages - English, French, Italian, and Spanish.&nbsp;&nbsp;She taught high school art in Hill City for several years.&nbsp; She also owned The Studio in WaKeeney for 20+ years where she was an expert framer providing custom frames for many customers. Lyndell had the privilege of framing all of Dr. John Cody's original prints, which eventually hung on display at the Smithsonian and later at Johns Hopkins.In May of 1979, Lyndell accepted a position with High Plains Mental Health Center to apply her teaching and art experience in working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. She worked in the partial hospital program teaching life skills and assisting clients in gaining the skills to live more independently. She became a licensed substance counselor and provided payee support for those needing assistance. Both clients and staff appreciated her compassion and her genuine concern for each individual. Because of her compassion, kindness and ability to hold the line, some clients referred to her as “Mother Teresa with an Attitude."&nbsp; She served the people of Northwest Kansas for 23 years.&nbsp;She loved to travel, listen to music, play the violin, paint, play cards, golf with friends, and work in her greenhouse and garden. Throughout her lifetime, she loved her kitties as close friends.&nbsp; Lyndell had an abundance of friends; she never met a stranger.&nbsp; She was a bit of a foodie and loved peanut butter, chocolate, and all things lemon.&nbsp; Lyndell had a great dislike of the color green, which her brother teased her about profusely, and she and her nieces laughed about often.Lyndell is survived by her brother, Howard G. Dykes (Jackie) of Cheyenne, Wyoming; nieces, Stacy Maestas (Christopher) and Kimberly Southworth (Jerome) who also live in Cheyenne; great nephews, Garrett Maestas (Haley) and Reagan Kosowicz; great nieces, Lakiea Jenkins (Jordan), Brenna Kosowicz, and Hannah Maestas; four great great nephews and one great great niece; her trusty companion, Dusty the Black Cat; and her adoptive families, too many to name, in WaKeeney.&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents, Gladys and Roy Dykes; numerous aunts and uncles, and life-long friends over the years.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her family and close friends will host a reception with light refreshments to celebrate Lyndell’s life on Saturday, October 8, from 11:00 to 1:00 at the WaKeeney Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 332 N 6th Street, WaKeeney, KS. HARRISONVILLE, Mo. (AP) — A northwest Missouri man pleaded guilty Friday to killing two brothers from Wisconsin after they came to his farm in 2019 to collect a debt from a cattle contract.

Garland Nelson, of Braymer, pleaded guilty to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/michael-brown-us-news-ap-top-news-kansas-city-wisconsin-d979d903133f475f941d1be6a8ce5fe3">two counts of first-degree murder</a>&nbsp;in the deaths of 24-year-old Justin Diemel and 35-year-old Nicholas Diemel, of Shawano County, Wisconsin.

He was given two life sentences without parole, which will run consecutively.

In exchange for his plea, charges of abandonment of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, armed criminal action and tampering with a motor vehicle were dropped. the St. Joseph News-Press&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newspressnow.com/news/local_news/courts/nelson-pleads-guilty-gets-two-life-sentences-in-brothers-murders/article_9a86aad6-40c4-11ed-8e46-7fb718cb3f68.html">reported.</a>

In 2020, one of Nelson’s defense attorneys said the state planned to seek&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/9ec813dce6b49739ce4cefe408145fd3">the death penalty</a>&nbsp;if Nelson was convicted in the killings.

The brothers’ father reported them missing July 21, 2019, after they didn’t return from a visit to Nelson’s farm, where they had gone to collect a $250,000 debt. Nelson was supposed to be caring for cattle for the brothers, according to court records.

The Diemel family sent livestock to Nelson's farm to be cared for and sold between 2018 and 2019. The animals were neglected and many died but Nelson charged the family full price, according to court documents.

When the Diemels asked for their money back, Nelson intentionally sent a damaged check to Nicholas Diemel, which prompted the brothers' visit to his farm.

Prosecutors said Nelson shot the brothers and drove their pickup truck off of his farm. He told authorities he put the men's bodies in 55-gallon barrels and burned them. Nelson told investigators he dumped the remains on a manure pile and hid the barrels on his property, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) northeast of Kansas City, Missouri.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ffa79ba7ccfc4763b1cdc53d93b8f92a">remains were later found</a>&nbsp;in Missouri and in a livestock trailer in Lincoln County, Nebraska, that had been purchased in Missouri.

In 2020, the families of the victims&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/90822d5fc306e2c5f44f0fe2986ebcae">reached a $2 million settlement</a>&nbsp;in a wrongful death lawsuit filed against Nelson, his mother, Tomme Feil, and the family's cattle business, J4S Enterprises.

At the time of the brothers’ deaths, Nelson was on parole after serving 17 months in federal prison for an October 2016 conviction for cattle and insurance fraud. Prosecutors said he sold more than 600 head of cattle that did not belong to him, causing more than $262,000 in losses.

Man pleads guilty in deaths of Wisconsin brothers near Kansas City

It is with profound sadness, that I announce the death of my dad, 
Billy J. Alumbaugh.&nbsp; He passed away peacefully on September 26, 2022, 
surrounded by his family in Larned, KS.

My dad loved gardening, landscaping, and spending time with his 
family.&nbsp; Billy was especially fond of his grandchildren and was so 
excited to meet his new great-granddaughter, Claire, who is expected to 
be here soon.

Billy was born May 8, 1955, in Chula Vista, CA, and lived in 
Nickerson, Hutchinson, Turon, Lincoln, and most recently, Larned.&nbsp; He 
graduated from Nickerson High School in 1973 and worked as a laborer.&nbsp; 
He served in the United States Army from July 1973 to March 1976.

My dad could plant anything in the ground, and it would blossom into 
the most beautiful masterpiece.&nbsp; He tried in vain each year to teach me 
his craft, but finally succumbed to the realization that I just did not 
have the “magic touch” and allowed me to water his plants instead (but 
not too much and only during certain times of the day)!&nbsp; Billy loved 
mowing yards – any yard with any type of mower and at any time of the 
day.&nbsp; He knew exactly how to perfectly care for and maintain the most 
beautiful yards.&nbsp; Billy was also known for his beautiful food gardens 
that he planted every year.

Throughout his life, my dad was known for many things; making friends
 easily, helping anyone in need, loving his family, and being one of the
 most accident-prone people you had ever met.&nbsp; Billy’s stories of injury
 and near-death experiences always ended in a mixture of disbelief and 
belly laughs from his captivated audiences.

Billy is survived by the love of his life, Debra Alumbaugh – a woman 
who should be considered for sainthood solely by withstanding all the 
stitches, broken bones, surgeries, car wrecks, explosions, 
electrocutions, lightning strikes, snake bites, and other traumatic 
events she witnessed during their 46 years together.

Other survivors include:&nbsp; his daughter, Jessica (David) MacMahon; 
grandchildren, MacKenzie (Preston) Pittman, David (Brandy Trengove) 
MacMahon, and Sarah MacMahon.&nbsp; Anytime he spoke about us, it brought a 
smile to his face and he always said that he was so proud of all of us 
and the people we turned out to be.&nbsp;

He is also survived by: &nbsp;his brothers,&nbsp; Don Michael (Kathy) Minnich 
of East Mountain, TX, and Mark (Carolyn) Blair of Longview, TX; sisters,
 Tammy (Rusty) Yarborough of McPherson, KS, Tammy Vincent of Marshall 
TX, and Vicky (LeRoy) Kuzel of Washington state; sisters-in-law, 
Kimberly and the late Melvin Hooker, and &nbsp;Vicki Dority and the late John
 Holmes; brother-in-law, Mitchell Dority; and a plethora of nieces and 
nephews, family, and friends.

Billy was preceded in death by: his adoptive parents, Faye and Dwight
 Alumbaugh; birth parents, Joe (Stella) Brackeen and Daile (Jerry) 
Harris; brothers, Randy Brackeen, Rodney Minnich, and Jerry Harris; and 
sisters, Gaile Long, Terry Scroggins, Darlene Pryor, and an infant 
sister.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 3, 
2022, at the South Hutchinson Community Building, 101 West Avenue C, 
South Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; Military honors will be conducted by the Fort 
Riley Honor Guard.&nbsp; Family and friends are invited to stay for a light 
meal after the service.

Honorary casket bearers are David MacMahon, David J. MacMahon, 
Brandon Brewer, William Demoret, James Manges, and Preston Pittman.

Billy Joe Alumbaugh

Marilyn Edna Brehm, 86, passed away on February 26, 2022, at her home
 in Phoenix, Ariz. She was born on September 25, 1935, in the family 
homestead on the Barton/Stafford County line, in Stafford County to 
Ernest and Alice (Batchman) Spacil. Marilyn was married to William Brehm
 on June 25, 1965, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood, Kan. He 
passed away on July 22, 1996.

Marilyn grew up in Ellinwood, Kan., graduating from Ellinwood High 
School. She received all her sacraments at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 
in Ellinwood, Kan., 64 year member of the Daughters of Isabella 
Immaculate Conception Circle #744, and a member of St. Joseph Catholic 
Church in Phoenix, Ariz. Marilyn was a lady of many hobbies and skills: 
bowling, playing cards, being an excellent cook and homemaker.

Survivors include, a son, William “Bill” Brehm, II, and his fiancé, 
Janet Mariscal, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a grandson, William “Billy” Brehm, 
III, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She 
was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Ronald 
and Raymond Spacil; and a sister, Norma Mae (Spacil) King.

She was preceded in death by brother, Ronald Spacil, brother, Raymond Spacil, sister, Norma Mae (Spacil) King.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Mass of 
Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 8,

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Fort Hays State cross country teams both finished in the top four at the Gans Creek Classic, hosted by the University of Missouri. The women's team placed second with three Tigers in the top seven, while the men were fourth after placing one runner in the top five. The women were second overall and first amongst Division II competition, including topping the team leaderboard amongst the six MIAA programs in attendance. The Tigers collected 55 points from their top five runners, with all five finishing in the top 21 out of 120 runners. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6990">Regan Hodsden</a>&nbsp;was the top finisher for the women's team, finishing fifth with a time of 22:18.1.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7114">Jaycee Vath</a>&nbsp;was close behind in sixth after crossing the line in 22:25.8, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6976">Darian Hudgeons</a>&nbsp;making it three-straight Tigers to cross the line with a seventh-place finish in 22:30.0. Hodsden, Vath and Hudgeons ran in a pack for much of the race, starting the race towards the back of the top 20 at the first 1,000m split before slowly working their way forward the rest of the way. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7056">Emily Salmans</a>&nbsp;traversed the six-kilometer course in 23:14.8 to place 16th, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7064">Elizabeth Fender</a>&nbsp;rounded out the Tiger scoring five in 21st place with a time of 23:31.5. The men placed fourth out of 14 teams in attendance with 128 team points, including wins over two of the other four MIAA programs that competed at Gans Creek.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6995">Grant Bradley</a>&nbsp;picked up another top-five finish while pacing the Tigers for the third time this year, finishing fifth in 24:53.0. The sophomore ran with the front of the pack all morning, never falling below fifth at any of the 1,000m splits. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7001">Ethan Fisher</a>&nbsp;finished in 18th place out of 150 runners with a time of 25:38.5. After starting the race in the middle of the pack, the Garden City, Kan. native worked his way through the crowd at almost every split. He sat in 41st at the 1,000m mark before reaching the top 20 by the 6,000m line. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7034">Cori DeBoest</a>&nbsp;shaved more than 40 seconds off his eight-kilometer time from two weeks ago, finishing in 25th place with a time of 25:51.4.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7063">Jaret Pfizenmaier</a>&nbsp;ran a collegiate career-best 26:10.2 to finish in 37th place, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7000">Erick Estrada</a>&nbsp;rounded out the Tiger top five in 51st place after crossing the finish line in 26:27.0. FHSU AthleticsCOLUMBIA, Mo. - The Fort Hays State cross country teams both finished in the top four at the Gans Creek Classic, hosted by the University of Missouri. The women's team placed second with three Tigers in the top seven, while the men were fourth after placing one runner in the top five. The women were second overall and first amongst Division II competition, including topping the team leaderboard amongst the six MIAA programs in attendance. The Tigers collected 55 points from their top five runners, with all five finishing in the top 21 out of 120 runners. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6990">Regan Hodsden</a>&nbsp;was the top finisher for the women's team, finishing fifth with a time of 22:18.1.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7114">Jaycee Vath</a>&nbsp;was close behind in sixth after crossing the line in 22:25.8, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6976">Darian Hudgeons</a>&nbsp;making it three-straight Tigers to cross the line with a seventh-place finish in 22:30.0. Hodsden, Vath and Hudgeons ran in a pack for much of the race, starting the race towards the back of the top 20 at the first 1,000m split before slowly working their way forward the rest of the way. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7056">Emily Salmans</a>&nbsp;traversed the six-kilometer course in 23:14.8 to place 16th, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7064">Elizabeth Fender</a>&nbsp;rounded out the Tiger scoring five in 21st place with a time of 23:31.5. The men placed fourth out of 14 teams in attendance with 128 team points, including wins over two of the other four MIAA programs that competed at Gans Creek.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6995">Grant Bradley</a>&nbsp;picked up another top-five finish while pacing the Tigers for the third time this year, finishing fifth in 24:53.0. The sophomore ran with the front of the pack all morning, never falling below fifth at any of the 1,000m splits. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7001">Ethan Fisher</a>&nbsp;finished in 18th place out of 150 runners with a time of 25:38.5. After starting the race in the middle of the pack, the Garden City, Kan. native worked his way through the crowd at almost every split. He sat in 41st at the 1,000m mark before reaching the top 20 by the 6,000m line. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7034">Cori DeBoest</a>&nbsp;shaved more than 40 seconds off his eight-kilometer time from two weeks ago, finishing in 25th place with a time of 25:51.4.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7063">Jaret Pfizenmaier</a>&nbsp;ran a collegiate career-best 26:10.2 to finish in 37th place, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7000">Erick Estrada</a>&nbsp;rounded out the Tiger top five in 51st place after crossing the finish line in 26:27.0. The Tigers will compete in one more regular season race at the Trojan Invitational in Colby, Kan. on October 15 before jumping into the postseason in November.
