Kansas is providing fewer updates of its data about COVID-19 now that Gov. Laura Kelly formally declared that the state is moving toward treating COVID-19 as a disease like the flu that spreads regularly and isn't considered a pandemic.&nbsp;The health department plans to update data about cases and vaccinations each Wednesday.

The state continues to support access to free COVID-19 testing, works to ensure that vulnerable populations can get vaccinated, see that providers serve a broad population and give “comprehensive guidance” about the virus. She called the new phase “endemic normalcy.”

KDHE reports 17 additional COVID deaths since October 5

Florence Belle Antholz passed away at the Good Samaritan Society, in 
Atwood, KS, on October 9, 2022, at the age of 89. She was born December 
28, 1932, in Rapid City, SD, to Harold &amp; Elizabeth Haas. 
Florence grew up in a Christian home. The Haas family loved and 
appreciated music. Favorite times were getting around the piano and 
singing with her family, many adventures in the Black Hills with her 
five siblings, helping her father in the Haas Repair Shop and going to 
church. 
When she was ten years old, Florence accepted Jesus as her Lord and 
Savior and always had a deep faith and love for God and His word. 
Florence graduated from Rapid City High School in 1950. After High 
School, she worked and attended North Central Bible College in 
Minneapolis, MN. 
In 1955, Florence moved to Denver to work. There she met Don Antholz. 
They were united in marriage on October 5, 1956, and moved to the family
 farm north of McDonald, KS. Three children were born to this union, 
Robbin, April and Allen. 
Florence was a city girl who became a farm gal. She was a much-loved 
wife, mother, and friend. She enjoyed being a wife, raising her 
children, playing piano, singing, decorating, teaching and attending 
church. Florence taught piano lessons for several years, taught Sunday 
School and helped serve in several other areas at Church. 
After retiring from farming, Florence and Don moved to Atwood, in 2001. 
They were very fortunate to travel together to see much of the United 
States and a few other countries. The trips she most fondly remembered 
were Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. 
Other activities she enjoyed were singing and performing with the 
Prairie Rose Harmony, serving with the Gideons Auxiliary and attending 
Red Hats. Florence is remembered for her flair with fashion, décor and 
was always quick to pray for others. She will be greatly missed by her 
family and friends. 
Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers Clarence, Roger and 
Donald Haas and sisters, Betty Jane Grams and Mary Ellen Dahlberg. 
She is survived by her husband Don; children, Robbin Antholz, Allen 
Antholz and April Rodriguez; grandchildren, Tory Antholz Keller, Brenten
 Antholz, Casey Antholz, Hannah Applequist, Jacob Antholz, Austin 
Antholz, Carissa Antholz, Justin Antholz, Vanessa Thompson, Nick 
Rodriguez and Christy Ketcherside; great grandchildren, Kyle, AuBrey, 
Leah, Carter, Josiah, Maren and Kellan Antholz; along with many nieces, 
nephews and friends. 
Funeral Service is 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2022, at Courts of 
Praise, Atwood, KS, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow 
in Fairview Cemetery, Atwood.

Florence Belle Antholz

David Lee Rogers, 76, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2022,&nbsp; at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO from complications of Parkinson’s 
Disease.  His family was by his side with the Chaplain praying over him.
  David was born on April 16, 1946, in Denver, CO.

David
 grew up in Stockton, KS where he made life-long friends and memories, 
graduating from Stockton High School Class of ‘64. He was proud of his 
athletic abilities to set school track records, play baseball and 
football.  Dave furthered his education at Kansas University, Fort Hays 
State, and graduated from Washburn University with a degree in 
Economics. He was also a Certified Baseball Coach.

On 
April 2, 1965, he met Merena Hollingshead at a teen dance in 
Phillipsburg.  After a whirlwind courtship, their love was sealed in 
marriage on September 24, 1965, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in 
Stockton. They recently observed their 57th wedding anniversary.  One of
 Dave’s favorite saying was “the best decision two teenagers ever made”.
  Dave and Merena were blessed with two beautiful baby girls who grew to
 be beautiful ladies. Through the years they lived in Stockton, Lawrence
 and Topeka, KS; Omaha, NE; and Nixa, MO.

Dave never 
met a stranger and loved telling stories of growing up in a small town, 
racing homing pigeons, and playing/coaching baseball.  Most of all, Dave
 treasured spending time with his family.

David was 
preceded in death by his parents Linus and Ellen Rogers, parents-in-law 
Roy and Luella Hollingshead, brothers-in-law Jerry Sterling and Raymond 
Schick.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of the 
home; daughters Shari (Andrew) Cole of Bentonville, AR, and Shani 
Burkhart of Springfield, MO; sisters Patti Sterling of Stockton, KS; 
Loie (Jim) Lewin of Salina, KS; and brother Jim (Lorna) Rogers of 
Stockton, KS; sisters-in-law Letha (Stanley) Glaum of Manhattan, KS and 
Edith Schick of Logan, KS; granddaughter Meghan (Ethan) Sims of 
Altamonte Springs, FL; grandsons Nick (Andrea) Rogers of Bentonville, 
AR; Shane Burkhart of Austin, TX; Jason (Lauren) Burkhart of Joplin, MO;
 Chris (Lisa) Burkhart of Springfield, MO; great grandchildren Cora,

A Graveside service will 
be held on Monday, October 17, 2022, at 12:00 PM at the Fairview Cemetery
 in Phillipsburg, Kansas. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5PM until 
7PM at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton, Kansas. The family ask
 that friends and family join for food and fellowship immediately 
following the burial at El A De Oros Mexican Restaurant in Phillipsburg.

In
 the spirit of giving, in lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials
 to be made to a charity of donor’s choice or to St. Jude Children’s 
Hospital, who provided healing care to great-grandson Ben, when he was 5
 years old.

KANSAS CITY (AP)—Las Vegas Raiders receiver Davante Adams has been charged with misdemeanor assault for shoving a photographer to the ground as he left the field following a loss at Kansas City.

Kansas City, Missouri, police said Adams&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/status/1579682203339960320?s=20&amp;t=8JSEJm3A22oY6JFsFe-YxQ">pushed Ryan Zebley to the ground</a>&nbsp;while running off the field following the Raiders' 30-29 loss to the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night. Police called it an “intentional, overt act” that caused whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion.

Charges were filed Wednesday morning in Municipal Court of Kansas City.

Adams apologized in his postgame comments to the media and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/tae15adams/status/1579687398686228480?s=20&amp;t=jZwbBGXeaBWRP2YcD4TL5A">later on Twitter</a>.

“He jumped in front of me coming off the field. I kind of pushed him. He ended up on the ground,” Adams said after the game. “I want to apologize to him for that. That was just frustration mixed with him really just running in front of me.

“I shouldn’t have responded that way, but that’s the way I responded. I want to apologize to him for that.”

The NFL is also investigating Adams' actions. A person familiar with the process told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Adams could face possible punishment, including a fine or suspension.

Raiders coach Josh McDaniels said Tuesday that he supports Adams and will cooperate in any investigation.

Adams had three catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns in the game. He has 29 catches for 414 yards and five TDs so far in his first season with the Raiders.

Raiders Adams charged for shoving photographer in KC

WASHINGTON (AP) —The U.S. on Wednesday authorized updated COVID-19 boosters for children as young as 5, seeking to expand protection ahead of an expected winter wave.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/covid-vaccine-omicron-booster-shot-227514678d25a99b65b7ee092735fb03">Tweaked boosters</a>&nbsp;rolled out for Americans 12 and older last month, doses modified to target&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/covid-science-health-pandemics-flu-c92b8653683afbac3d81eebff8f5d29d">today’s most common and contagious omicron relative</a>. While there wasn't a big rush, federal health officials are urging that people seek the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-covid-centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention-government-politics-551906ac80381a5e9aaf8383ea32ccab">extra protection ahead of holiday gatherings</a>.

Now the Food and Drug Administration has given a green light for elementary school-age kids to get the updated booster doses, too -- one made by Pfizer for 5- to 11-year-olds, and a version from rival Moderna for those as young as 6.

There’s one more step before parents can bring their kids in for the new shot: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommends how vaccines are used, must sign off.

Americans&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-science-health-covid-infectious-diseases-8ab56452a9490de2819c73bd302feccc">may be tired of repeated calls to get boosted</a>&nbsp;against COVID-19 but experts say the updated shots have an advantage: They contain half the recipe that targeted the original coronavirus strain and half protection against the dominant BA.4 and BA.5 omicron versions.

These combination or “bivalent” boosters are designed to broaden immune defenses so that people are better protected against serious illness whether they encounter an omicron relative in the coming months -- or a different mutant that’s more like the original virus.

“We want to have the best of both worlds,” Pfizer’s Dr. Bill Gruber, a pediatrician, told The Associated Press. He hopes the updated shots will “re-energize interest in protecting children for the winter.”

The updated boosters are “extremely important” for keeping kids healthy and in school, said Dr. Jason Newland, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Washington University in St. Louis.

Parents should know “there is no concern from the safety perspective with the bivalent vaccines, whether Moderna or Pfizer,” Newland added.

Only people who’ve gotten their initial vaccinations -- with any of the original-formula versions -- qualify for an updated booster. That means about three-fourths of Americans 12 and older are eligible. As of last weekend, only at least 13 million had gotten an updated booster, White House COVID-19 coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha estimated Tuesday.

To pediatricians’ chagrin, getting children their first vaccinations has been tougher. Less than a third of 5- to 11-year-olds have had their two primary doses and thus would qualify for the new booster.

This age group will get kid-size doses of the updated booster — and they can receive it at least two months after their last dose, whether that was a primary vaccination or an earlier booster, the FDA said.

Pfizer said it could ship up to 6 million kid-sized doses within a week of authorization, in addition to ongoing adult-dose shipments.

Until now, Moderna’s updated booster was cleared only for adults. Wednesday's FDA action authorized the booster for teens as well as children as young as age 6.

As for even younger tots, first vaccinations didn’t open for the under-5 age group until mid-June -- and it will be several more months before regulators decide if they’ll also need a booster using the updated recipe.

Exactly how much protection does an updated COVID-19 booster shot offer? That’s hard to know. Pfizer and Moderna are starting studies in young children.

But the FDA cleared the COVID-19 booster tweaks without requiring human test results -- just like it approves yearly changes to flu vaccines. That’s partly because both companies already had studied experimental shots tweaked to target prior COVID-19 variants, including an earlier omicron version, and found they safely revved up virus-fighting antibodies.

“It's clearly a better vaccine, an important upgrade from what we had before,” Jha said earlier this week.

Jha urged adults to get their updated shot in October — like they get flu vaccinations — or at least well before holiday gatherings with high-risk family and friends. People who've recently had COVID-19 still need the booster but can wait about three months, he added.

Stephen V. Bond, age 79, passed away October 8 at Lawrence Memorial 
Hospital, Lawrence, KS.  He was born in Salina, KS on October 18, 1942, 
the only child of Paul &amp; Aileen (Patterson) Bond.

Steve
 graduated from Plainville High School in 1960, and then served in the 
Army from January 1964 to November 1964 when he received a medical 
discharge.  Two years later, he met and married Mary Hannah Page. They 
were partners in marriage for 56 years.

He earned a 
degree in Civil Engineering from University of Kansas in 1976.  After 
graduation Steve’s family moved to Great Bend where he went to work for 
Petroleum, Inc. for approximately 10 years.  Later, the family moved to 
Wichita where Steve was employed by the Kansas Corporation Commission.  
He retired in June 2014.

As a young man Steve liked to 
hunt and play golf and was an avid KU sports fan throughout his life.  
After retirement he enjoyed being outdoors puttering in the yard for 
hours on end.  Steve and Mary traveled often to visit their children and
 grandchildren attending birthdays, holidays, and sporting events.

He
 was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife Mary 
(Page) Bond; son Matthew Bond (Shannon); son Cole Bond (Kasey); and 
daughter Andrea Graham (Brandon) and 12 grandchildren: Drew, Olivia,

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas' Republican attorney general told a racial justice commission two years ago that racial bias “obviously” exists in law enforcement, but he said Tuesday that he wasn't saying systemic racism exists and stood by campaign attacks on the state's Democratic governor for using that phrase.

Attorney General Derek Schmidt and fellow Republicans are portraying Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly as anti-police as Schmidt tries to unseat Kelly in the Nov. 8 election. George Floyd's death in 2020 led Kelly to form a Commission on Racial Justice and Equity to examine policing, declaring as she did, "Systemic racism within law enforcement must end.”

Schmidt argues that saying systemic racism exists is calling law enforcement officers racist. His own comments that racial bias “obviously” exists in policing came during&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bofBgFjXXro">a Zoom meeting of the governor's commission</a>&nbsp;in October 2020. He told reporters Tuesday that when “a rare bad apple" commits misconduct, “There are mechanisms in place to deal with those individual problems.”

“They are two different things,” Schmidt said during an impromptu news conference following an event at the Kansas Bureau of Investigation's forensics center in Topeka. “I certainly don’t argue that there is systemic racism in law enforcement, and I think the governor’s decision to appoint an entire separate commission to focus on that problem was ill-advised.”

Both parties expect the Kansas governor's race to be close, and Schmidt has joined other Republican candidates across the U.S.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-health-police-covid-campaigns-13d5f83a6604df1bc6a33779fa159e93">in pivoting to crime</a>&nbsp;as a big issue as he tries to win back independent and moderate Republican voters who backed Kelly in 2018. Part of his strategy is painting Kelly as antagonistic toward the police.

Kelly's campaign responded Tuesday with the same statement it issued last week, saying Schmidt is engaged in “false smears” and that Kelly has delivered “historic investments” in law enforcement. Since Kelly took office in January 2019, spending on the prison system and Kansas Highway Patrol has grown by nearly 33%, though funding for the KBI under Schmidt’s control has remained flat.

Kelly formed her racial justice commission in June 2020 after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/derek-chauvin-trial-live-updates-04-20-2021-955a78df9a7a51835ad63afb8ce9b5c1">the police killing of Floyd</a>&nbsp;in Minneapolis. In a column she wrote afterward, Kelly said she wanted the panel to recommend “meaningful and lasting change.”

“Racial inequality and injustice have been part of our nation's history from the beginning,” Kelly wrote. “Communities of color do not have the luxury of time for leaders to ignore these issues any longer."

The commission’s numerous recommendations in 2020 and 2021 included ensuring robust anti-bias training, prohibiting fired officers from working again in law enforcement, and revising local policies on the use of force. Despite Kelly's call for lasting change,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/death-of-george-floyd-ahmaud-arbery-politics-fa050ad76069e35ae20c6e114492d437">her administration did not push</a>&nbsp;the Republican-controlled Legislature to enact them.

Schmidt said that although if he were governor, he would have condemned Floyd's death and called on Minnesota to deal with officers' conduct, he also would have condemned violence during protests over Floyd's death and suggested that some leaders then were “elevating this issue in an inflammatory manner.”

During his Zoom presentation to Kelly's racial justice commission in October 2020, Schmidt briefed members on the role of the attorney general's office and the state Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training in reviewing allegations of racial bias against officers. During the meeting, commission member Mark McCormick asked Schmidt, “To what degree do you think racial bias exists in our system here in the state?"

Schmidt replied: “You know, Mark, I mean, obviously, it does exist. It exists in human relations, and so it therefore exists in the subset of human relations that include law enforcement interactions with people.”

Schmidt added that he believes that the CPOST and individual law enforcement agencies take complaints of racial bias “quite seriously” and that “it’s not an also-ran consideration.”

He told reporters Tuesday that law enforcement officers “overwhelmingly are honorable" and that it's a disservice to them for the governor to suggest that policing is “systemically racist.”

Amos J. Bozarth Jr. was born April 13, 1943 on a farm near Laverne, 
Oklahoma, to Amos J Bozarth Sr. and Phyllis Jean (Cole) Bozarth. He 
departed this life October 9, 2022, at Wichita, KS at the age of 79 
years, 5 months and 26 days.

A.J. spent his early childhood in Wichita and attended South 
Riverside Elementary. He moved with his family to Derby and graduated 
from Derby Senior High School in 1961. At the age of 16, he started his 
printing career as an apprentice printer at the Derby News. During his remaining high school years A.J. worked after school for The Mulvane News.

A.J. met his wife, Karen Jean Barton on a blind date and they were 
married two years later on April 11, 1965 at the Conway Springs Church 
of the Brethren. They made their home in Conway Springs where they 
raised their family of five children.

At the age of 19, A.J. was employed as a Linotype operator and printer by R.H. Cline of the Conway Springs Star and The Argonia Argosy.
 After R.H. retired from the Star, he continued his employment with the 
Star for a total of 10 years. At the age of 23 he purchased The South Haven New Era newspaper during his continued employment at the Star. A.J. worked in the evenings to publish the South Haven New Era. He continued to publish it for over 50 years. In 1987, he established The Norwich News which he published for over 30 years.

In 1973, A.J. went into business for himself as A.J.’s Printing and 
purchased Dr. Eugene McCormick’s office building on Spring Avenue. In 
August 2002 he moved his printing shop to a new building at 215 S. 
Eighth in Conway Springs.

A.J. was a member of Conway Springs Chamber of Commerce and served on
 the Conway Springs Fire Dept. He served 16 years on the Conway Springs 
City Council. During his tenure, he served two years as President of the 
Council and 12 years as Mayor. As Mayor, A.J. focused on city 
improvements and infrastructure. &nbsp;

The City of Conway Springs honored and recognized A.J.’s service to 
the community by having him serve as the Fall Festival Parade Marshall 
in 2016.

A.J. was an active member in his church. He served as Cubmaster and 
Scoutmaster for 12 years. As Scoutmaster, he had five Eagle Scouts in 
his troop. These five young men also later served two-year church 
missions.

He has served nine years in the Wichita Kansas Stake Presidency and 
14 years as Branch President and Bishop of the Wellington Ward of The 
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For the past 15 years, A.J.
 has served as the patriarch for the Wichita Kansas Stake, ministering 
over 400 patriarchal blessings. The example he set for his family has 
generated 14 full-time missionaries, with many more to come. His son 
Greg served 2 years in Tacoma, Washington. Thirteen grandchildren have 
served or are serving missions:

A.J. was a talented artist. He created many paintings and drawings 
throughout his life. There have been many requests from family members 
for him to paint more. Just retire already and we will provide you with 
our requests. A.J. gifted a painting to each of his five children as 
wedding presents when they were married. He painted scenes from the 
community including the Spring House in Conway Springs, and a multitude 
of religious scenes, but his favorite were landscapes. I’m sure all of 
these pieces will create many spirited discussions in the near future as
 everyone tries to lay their claim to these precious memories.&nbsp;

A.J. and Karen loved to travel. They made countless trips to Utah for
 babies being born, priesthood ordinations, Eagle Scout ceremonies, 
mission farewells, holidays, and weddings. They were committed to being 
in their children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s lives 
regardless of the distance between them. For their 50th wedding 
anniversary, Mom, Dad and their children and spouses went on an Alaskan 
cruise.

Later in life, A.J. and Karen returned to Eureka Springs, Arkansas 
where they had honeymooned. Ultimately, they purchased a timeshare on 
TableRock Lake in Branson, Missouri. They wanted to create even more 
memories with their family. For the past 17 years, family has gathered 
at Big Cedar to go boating, fishing, swimming, miniature golfing, drink 
lots of hot chocolate, watch fireworks, tours of the fish hatchery, see a
 variety of shows in Branson, ride go-karts, and endless trips to Silver
 Dollar City. It also included lots of naps, but most of those were 
taken by Mom and Dad. For the past 12 years, Mom organized a family 
reunion every two years in Granby, Colorado. In the mountains, the 
family did lots of hiking, did water sports, rode ATVs on the mountain 
trails and always got ice cream in Grand Lake. Dad never missed a chance
 to eat ice cream. He would frequently tell the story of his first ice 
cream cone as a kid. He picked up glass bottles to recycle and get money
 to buy his first ice cream cone. It was so delicious, as soon as he 
finished eating it, he immediately returned to hunting for more bottles 
and bought a second ice cream cone later that day.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother John Bozarth and two sisters: Alta Bowman and Christine Ryno.

A.J. is survived by his wife Karen; his children: Deborah (John) 
McCurdy of Lindon, Utah; Gregory (Carmel) Bozarth of Ivins, Utah; Teresa
 (Phillip) Beehler of Spanish Fork, Utah; Lora (Michael) Bull of 
Monument, Colorado; Mechelle (Jason) Conrady of Wichita, Kansas; one 
sister Ernestine Turner of Wichita, Kansas; 23 grandchildren; 11 great 
grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends.

Cheers to endless ice cream cones in heaven. Thanks for the memories, Dad.

Riverside Elementary. He moved with his family to Derby and graduated 
from Derby Senior High School in 1961. At the age of 16, he started his 
printing career as an apprentice printer at the Derby News. During his remaining high school years A.J. worked after school for The Mulvane News.A.J. met his wife, Karen Jean Barton on a blind date and they were 
married two years later on April 11, 1965 at the Conway Springs Church 
of the Brethren. They made their home in Conway Springs where they 
raised their family of five children.At the age of 19, A.J. was employed as a Linotype operator and printer by R.H. Cline of the Conway Springs Star and The Argonia Argosy.
 After R.H. retired from the Star, he continued his employment with the 
Star for a total of 10 years. At the age of 23 he purchased The South Haven New Era newspaper during his continued employment at the Star. A.J. worked in the evenings to publish the South Haven New Era. He continued to publish it for over 50 years. In 1987, he established The Norwich News which he published for over 30 years.In 1973, A.J. went into business for himself as A.J.’s Printing and 
purchased Dr. Eugene McCormick’s office building on Spring Avenue. In 
August 2002 he moved his printing shop to a new building at 215 S. 
Eighth in Conway Springs.A.J. was a member of Conway Springs Chamber of Commerce and served on
 the Conway Springs Fire Dept. He served 16 years on the Conway Springs 
City Council. During his tenure, he served two years as President of the 
Council and 12 years as Mayor. As Mayor, A.J. focused on city 
improvements and infrastructure. &nbsp;The City of Conway Springs honored and recognized A.J.’s service to 
the community by having him serve as the Fall Festival Parade Marshall 
in 2016.A.J. was an active member in his church. He served as Cubmaster and 
Scoutmaster for 12 years. As Scoutmaster, he had five Eagle Scouts in 
his troop. These five young men also later served two-year church 
missions.He has served nine years in the Wichita Kansas Stake Presidency and 
14 years as Branch President and Bishop of the Wellington Ward of The 
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For the past 15 years, A.J.
 has served as the patriarch for the Wichita Kansas Stake, ministering 
over 400 patriarchal blessings. The example he set for his family has 
generated 14 full-time missionaries, with many more to come. His son 
Greg served 2 years in Tacoma, Washington. Thirteen grandchildren have

Sandra Elaine Hubbard, 66, of Salina, Kansas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 4, 2022.

Sandra was born on June 14, 1956 in Hays, 
Kansas to Vernell Arends and Norma Pauline Ives. Sandra was lovingly 
raised by her grandparents Harold and Hilma (Fisher) Ives. Sandra 
graduated from Stockton High School. Soon after graduation Sandra began 
raising her family. She married Joseph Vane Hubbard on October 26, 1980 
in Denver, Colorado and together, they raised four children. He survives
 at the home.

Sandra was known for her servant leadership
 and to always put herself last. This trait culminated in 2012 when she 
graduated from KCKCC as an RN. For the last ten years she has served 
countless people in their final days on Earth through nursing home care.
 Her intelligence, passion, and heart for others was quickly recognized 
and she became a Director of Nursing in 2014. She had just moved to 
Emporia in September to serve at Holiday Resort as the Director of 
Nursing at their Skilled Nursing Facility.&nbsp;

Surviving family members include: husband, 
Joseph Vane Hubbard of Salina; sons, Andrew (Shannon) Lee Welch of 
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Gerad (LJ) Hubbard of Nagasaki, Japan (US

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State Women's Soccer is back in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 for the first time since 2017, ranked No. 23 in the latest edition of the poll released on Tuesday (Oct. 11). The Tigers, still unbeaten this season at 8-0-6 overall, moved up from the receiving votes section of the poll last week to the Top 25 this week.

The Tigers played to a scoreless draw with Northeastern State and a 1-1 draw with Rogers State last week as they remain unbeaten in MIAA play at 3-0-4. This is the Tigers first appearance in the national poll since September 5, 2017. FHSU was ranked No. 14 in the preseason poll that year and then moved to No. 17 in the first regular season poll before dropping out.

Fort Hays State joins No. 5 ranked Central Missouri to represent the MIAA in the Top 25, while Central Oklahoma slipped from No. 21 to the receiving votes section. The Tigers are the only unbeaten team overall among MIAA schools, but join Emporia State as the only two teams unbeaten in conference play.

Janice Linville, 86, of Colby, Kansas, passed away October 10, 2022, at 
Ascension Senior Living in Wichita, Kansas. She was born July 2, 1936, 
to Forest (Punk) and Eva (Mahorney) Denny on a farm in Rawlins County, 
Kansas. The family, including her sisters Connie and Carol, moved to 
Colby in 1945, where Janice graduated from Colby High School in 1954. 
On April 10, 1955, she married Harold Leslie Linville at the Colby 
United Methodist Church. Janice was a loving and supportive wife helping
 her husband with his construction business and supporting his 41-year 
career in the Kansas National Guard. 
Janice enjoyed life and valued time with family and friends. She never

Ascension Senior Living in Wichita, Kansas. She was born July 2, 1936, 
to Forest (Punk) and Eva (Mahorney) Denny on a farm in Rawlins County, 
Kansas. The family, including her sisters Connie and Carol, moved to 
Colby in 1945, where Janice graduated from Colby High School in 1954. 
On April 10, 1955, she married Harold Leslie Linville at the Colby 
United Methodist Church. Janice was a loving and supportive wife helping
 her husband with his construction business and supporting his 41-year 
career in the Kansas National Guard. 
Janice enjoyed life and valued time with family and friends. She never

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's soccer team dropped one spot in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll posted on Tuesday (Oct. 11), now at No. 16. The Tigers have been among the Top 25 in five of the six regular season polls as well as the preseason poll.

The Tigers fell to Newman 1-0 in their only match last week. FHSU is 7-3-3 overall this season, but has wins over No. 3 ranked CSU-Pueblo and No. 25 Southern Nazarene and a win over Northeastern State when it was No. 16 in the nation. They have played four matches this season against teams currently in the Top 25.

⚽ Tiger men slip a spot in national rankings

Robert Alfred Deterding was born February 29, 1940, in Hebron, Nebraska, to Richard and Ella (Loontjer) Deterding.&nbsp; He died October 8, 2022, at the age of 82.

Bob, as he was known to all, grew up on the family farm located between Deshler and Hebron, Nebraska.&nbsp; He attended school in Deshler and graduated from Deshler High School in 1958.

Bob was united in marriage to Judith Ann Philippi of Bruning, Nebraska, on February 14, 1960.&nbsp; They made their home in Geneva, Nebraska, until 1970 when the family moved to Belleville.&nbsp; Bob and Judy were parents to a daughter and four sons.&nbsp;

Over the years, armed with an incredible work ethic, Bob worked in heavy construction, livestock feed sales and completed his professional career retiring from The Belleville Telescope where he worked with the Farmer Stockman publication.

Bob’s hobby was woodworking.&nbsp; Following his retirement, Bob liked building furniture, remodeling homes and doing miscellaneous projects for others.&nbsp; Bob also enjoyed traveling in his RV and took many trips as the opportunities arose.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, of 58 years; his parents, Richard and Ella (Loontjer) Deterding, and his brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Shirley Deterding.

Survivors include his children Bruce (Julie) Deterding of Wichita, Kansas; Lori Greene of Wichita, Kansas; Mark (Tammy) Deterding of Hays, Kansas; Todd (Christine) Deterding of Lindsborg, Kansas; Brian (Melanie) Deterding of Greensburg, Kansas; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and his second love, Kathy Johnson.

Funeral Services will be Friday, October 14th, 2022, at 10:00 a.m., at the American Lutheran Church in Belleville. Burial will follow at the Belleville City Cemetery.

Victoria Community Coalition plans Popcorn Ball fundraiser

WASHINGTON (AP) — When it comes to reassuring Americans about an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/economy">economy</a>&nbsp;that's an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/2022-midterm-elections">election-year</a>&nbsp;challenge for his party, President Joe Biden is telling the country to hold on.

It's a message of patience as voters are buffeted by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-economy-prices-881c8411bad80180f025e138f0bd444e">persistent inflation</a>, fears of a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/is-us-economy-in-recession-8be54810a122a2f84f0f7b3329ab1c9e">recession</a>&nbsp;and the prospect of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-inflation-health-germany-elections-d873521f8b165774de3902439dd5a6ee">rising energy prices</a>&nbsp;in the closing weeks of the campaign season when they will determine the fate of vulnerable Democrats and control of Congress.

The $25 trillion-plus economy is veering in two radically different directions.

Growth has fallen for two straight quarters, raising the specter of recession. But&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-technology-democracy-congress-government-and-politics-46c5be6252376e5018163d6647f2cfe8">job gains</a>&nbsp;have rolled on, including 263,000 more in September as a sign of economic health. Nonetheless, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-jobs-report-september-2022-b91e272b3e56b1f70ef558f6029f97c5">latest jobs report</a>&nbsp;sent&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-asia-sydney-tokyo-stock-markets-e2a789a50fddb88881bbd6931a99a134">stocks plummeting</a>&nbsp;Friday on renewed worries that the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-business-unemployment-8bbad9288d524bf30b2087d79b71597c">Federal Reserve</a>&nbsp;will have to continue aggressive interest rate increases to temper rising consumer prices.

Biden argued that the newest numbers are solid and have slowed in recent months in a way that points toward inflation easing. Major oil-producing countries led by Saudi Arabia and Russia dealt him a “disappointment” with their decision last week to cut production, but the U.S. government forecasts that domestic output should increase by an average of roughly 840,000 barrels a day next year.

“This is the progress we need to see,” the president said. “In the short term, the transition to a more stable growth that continues to deliver for workers and families while bringing inflation down. In the long term, the economy built on a firmer foundation. We still have a lot of work to do. We’re building a different economy than before, a better one, a stronger one.”

Yet polls show Biden consistently with poor marks for his handling of the economy, and people in the United States broadly view the country as headed in the wrong direction.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-approval-rating-poll-bf41fe8b0016bf8aaf144e7310c6539f">A September poll</a>&nbsp;from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found just 38% of those surveyed approve of Biden's economic leadership. Twenty-nine percent of U.S. adults said the economy is in good shape, while 71% say it’s doing poorly. That was better than in June, when 20% said conditions were good and 79% said they were bad.

While Biden is not on the ballot Nov. 8, Democratic candidates are facing relentless criticism from Republicans who want to make the election a referendum on the president's performance. With GOP ads citing inflation and high gas prices, there is growing pressure for the White House to address the public's concerns about the economy before Election Day.

Jason Furman, who led the White House Council of Economic Advisers under President Barack Obama, said the jobs numbers were a political win for Biden, but also a warning of the economic hardship to come as the Fed faces pressure to raise rates to tackle inflation.

“The price level is still high and headline inflation is likely to have picked up every month from July through October due to the dynamics of gas prices,” Furman said. Curtailing that, he said, “unfortunately will take a lot of time, and potentially a lot of pain, for them to succeed.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/political-issues-3c8e1dd27e93b995b930035a7ead3cb6">Nowhere is Biden’s messaging challenge more pronounced than on gas prices.</a>

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/political-issues-3c8e1dd27e93b995b930035a7ead3cb6">For 99 straight days</a>, the White House highlighted declining prices after their peak in June. But they started ticking up last month, and they have shot up more since OPEC and its partners announced severe production cuts Wednesday.

The U.S. national average is now $3.91 a gallon, according to AAA. That’s below the June high of $5.02, but higher than a month ago ($3.74) and a year ago ($3.27).

At the end of March, Biden ordered the release 1 million barrels of oil a day for six months from the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-biden-business-europe-3e1808077371b88ae043c86584763afd">U.S. strategic reserve</a>&nbsp;to help lower prices. The White House now says the administration is weighing further&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-business-prices-ae5200310e3d3c0390d9e1cbb3c5a964">releases</a>&nbsp;to offset the OPEC cuts. It has also tried to shame oil companies into&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-biden-covid-health-f73c882b0664a5d5dd62635a9a65364c">increasing production and cutting their profit margins</a>.

Meanwhile, the Fed expects that bringing inflation closer to the central bank's target of no more than 2% a year —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-economy-prices-881c8411bad80180f025e138f0bd444e">it was 8.3% higher in September than a year earlier</a>&nbsp;— will require a contraction in the labor market that could put at least a million people out of work.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-jerome-powell-unemployment-government-and-politics-96092b0d276a604b3c1e83f44b8e2ec9">Fed officials indicated last month</a>&nbsp;that the unemployment rate would climb next year to 4.4% — up nearly a full percentage point — if inflation were to fall below 3%. The hiring Biden that cheered on Friday might soon give way to losses.

OPEC's production cut could mean that it will be even harder to lower inflation, with more expensive gas requiring the Fed to take more drastic measures to bring down prices, costing even more jobs.

Investment bank Goldman Sachs on Thursday suggested that oil prices will reach $110 a barrel toward the end of this year, compared with its prior forecast of $100 a barrel. That would translate into higher prices at the pump and has given Republicans more evidence to say he's put the economy at risk.

“The president is in denial that America is experiencing a dangerous wage-price spiral that will drive high inflation for years, that we are in stagflation, and that we are either in, or on the verge of, a harsh recession — all that he created by bungling the recovery,” said Texas Rep. Kevin Brady, the top Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.

The top four slots of the Coaches Poll are filled by teams that competed in the NCAA Central Regional last year. After Missouri Southern and Fort Hays State, Nebraska-Kearney was picked third and Missouri Western fourth. All four teams received multiple first place votes, MSSU with six, FHSU with three, UNK with two, and MWSU with three. Central Missouri jumped into the top four mix of the Media Poll, slotted third behind MSSU and FHSU. Roger Hamilton Brent

Rita Mae Buehne, 101, passed away on October 6, 2022. She was born on April 12, 1921, in Schoenchen, Kansas, to Charles and Mary (Basgall) Bieker.

She blessed this world for 101 years with a servant's heart and helping hands. Raised on a farm in Schoenchen, she knew hardship and work as she would rise early to hand milk cows before school. She battled the dust bowl with her family and her stories were heart wrenching.

After leaving the farm she settled in Wichita and chose the nursing profession as her gift to the world. 40 years at St. Francis Hospital with most in the OR, she touched many hearts of patients, physicians, residents, as well as her fellow colleagues.

Even as the years took a toll on her frail body and she had to reluctantly give up her house that she and Vincent had built, she quickly stole the hearts of the Derby Assisted Living staff, which she shared the final few years with.Her light was extinguished last Thursday as the Good Lord called her home to Vincent and her family and friends. We will all miss her but we are all better people because of her! Give your folks a special hug today!She is preceded in death by her parents; and loving husband, Vincent Buehne.She is survived by her children, Marcie (Larry) Pray, Janice (Mike) Pray, and Steve (Alicia) Buehne; grandchildren, Sam (Zanae) Pray, Mary (Clayton) Berta, Luke Pray, Adam (Megan) Pray, Mathew Pray, Rebecca Pray, Stephanie Pray, Jennifer (Jordan) Serreyn, Jimmie Pray, Brandon (Cerina) Buehne, and Vanessa Buehne; and great-grandchildren, Rowan Buehne, Waylon Pray, Hudson Pray, and Reese Pray.Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Derby. A rosary will be held beginning at 7 p.m. at the same location. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 14, 2022, at 10 a.m. also at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2300 E. Meadowlark Rd., Derby, KS. Committal will follow after fellowship at Resurrection Cemetery, 1640 N.
