ELLSWORTH COUNTY —A petition to disorganize the USD 112 Central Plains school district has been filed. The Wilson High School Future Committee asked the USD 112 Board of Education to delay the closure of Wilson High School for one year. With no action regarding the issue taken at Monday's board meeting, the petition was filed with Ellsworth County Tuesday morning.

Long-time educator Roberta Meier, who helped file the petition, was disappointed the issue was not discussed Monday.

"That was very surreal because, with something this serious and historic, it shows their lack of understanding for what a disorganization is and how it will proceed," she said. "The only discussion was about who would pay for the election and the date."

Disorganization was brought up twice during Monday's board meeting. The body heard from Claflin resident Dave Wirth, who expressed frustration that only three of Wilson's 73 students visited Central Plains High School in Claflin after hearing about the closure in Wilson. 

He expressed further concern that voters may be willing to shut down their own elementary school in Wilson, and that no one is quite sure what disorganization would mean for USD 112.

"If you don't have any idea, you better find out, including the board members from Wilson, because I understand you're supporting this," Wirth said. "If you're not, I need to know now whether you are or aren't supporting this petition. Yes or no?"

Board Member Roger Robinson asked Wirth why he needed to know, and said Wirth did not need to know anything about him.  

"You're serving a public board?" Wirth asked. "Yes or no?"

Monday's meeting lasted nearly two-and-a-half hours. Late in the meeting, Superintendent Bill Lowry addressed the disorganization petition. He's been in touch with the Ellsworth County clerk's office and the state board of education, but answers about when the matter will be put on a ballot or who will pay for it are still undetermined.

"I just think it's important, if we get to that point, to try to educate all patrons on what 'yes' or 'no' means," Lowry told the board.

On Jan. 9, 2023, the USD 112 Central Plains Board of Education voted 5-2 to close Wilson High School at the close of the 2022-23 school year. The Wilson High School Future Committee was formed in October. The group visited Topeka several times to speak with state legislators about possible solutions. The disorganization petition will put the matter before voters in the district. If approved, the fate of the district would go before the state board of education. Beyond that, answers are few and far between.

"As far as precedence, there is none," Meier said. "When we asked the state how this would all play out and for advice, they just said basically we can ask the questions but there are no answers yet. We took an extra week to try to make sure we were getting this right."

JETMORE&nbsp; - Odessie Laura (Fakes) (Simpson) Smith, 92, passed away May 7, 2023 at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore.

She was born October 17, 1930 in Hanston, Kansas, the daughter of Roy B. and Ammie E. Killgore Fakes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A longtime area resident, she worked as a bank teller, was the clerk at the Register of Deeds and&nbsp;&nbsp;a secretary at the Hodgeman County Health Department

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Hodgeman County Health Center Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, and a former past Noble Grand and District Deputy for the Rebekah Lodge, all of Jetmore.

On June 12, 1948 she married Richard Simpson in Spearville, he passed away September 28, 1951.&nbsp;&nbsp;On June 20, 1958 she married Jack Smith in Jetmore; he passed away March 31, 1997.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice (Dee) Kolzow, Salina and Shelia (Craig Dill) Erickson, Bucklin; a brother, Clarence Fakes, Abilene; three grandchildren, Ryan (Kylee) Kolzow, Salina, Kerry Kolzow, Manhattan and Taylor (Justin Hill) Erickson, Wichita; and three great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Brixen and Emma.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lola Holl, son-in-law Steve Holl, three sisters, Rosie Berger, Bertie Simpson and Eva Thomas and four brothers, Virgil Fakes, Herman Fakes, Mervin Fakes and Howard Stephenson.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 13th, 2023 at Jetmore United Methodist Church, with Carolyn Tarman and Harmon Bliss presiding.&nbsp;&nbsp;Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Funeral Home, Jetmore.&nbsp;&nbsp;Interment will be in the Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore, Kansas.

Jennifer K. Phillips, age 56, passed away from cancer December 8, 2019, at home in Denver, Colorado.

Jennifer was born October 30, 1963, in Colby, Kansas.&nbsp; She graduated 
from Goodland High School in 1982.&nbsp; On July 13, 1985, she and Andrew 
Phillips were married. They moved to Denver in 1986 where she worked at 
K-Mart in Englewood Colorado for more than 10 years.&nbsp; She left work to 
stay home and raise her children and eventually went back to work at 
Michaels as a cake decorating instructor for Wilton Cakes where she 
worked for more than 8 years before cancer prevented her from doing that
 anymore.

At Jennifer’s passing she was survived by her husband of 34 years, M.
 Andrew Phillips, her daughter Gessica Phillips, and grandson Nosyah 
Phillips, her son Mathew (Maria) Phillips, her parents Robert and Judith
 McKnight, stepmother Carolyn Bird, her brothers and sisters William 
“Bill” McKnight, Bobbie Jo McKnight, Cheryl (John) Baker, Tina (Bruce) 
Gleason, A.R.(Sunday) McKnight, along with a host of nieces and nephews,
 mother-in-law Peggy Phillips and sister-in-law Amanda (Chris) Ross.

NEW YORK (AP) — A video recording of former President Donald Trump being questioned about the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-rape-trial-carroll-columnist-2024-b3c1a4b254b8d16d76e2ce39342d9856">rape allegations against him</a>&nbsp;was made public for the first time Friday, providing a glimpse of the Republican's emphatic, often colorful denials.

The video shows Trump answering questions in his trademark navy suit and a bright blue tie. He called Carroll's claim that he raped her in a luxury Manhattan department store "a false, disgusting lie.”

“It’s a disgrace. Frankly it’s a disgrace that something like this can be brought,” Trump said.

Trump reiterated his assertion that Carroll is “not my type,” but also mistook her for his second wife, Marla Maples, when shown a photo of him meeting Carroll and her then-husband at an event in the 1980s.

Trump was also asked about the infamous “Access Hollywood” video in which Trump bragged about grabbing women’s genitals. He said, as he has previously, that he was was engaging in “locker room talk.” Trump justified his comments about famous people being able to have their way with women, saying: “Historically that’s true with stars.”

Daniel E. Frick, 67, passed away on Sunday, April 30 2023 at Via Christi St. Francis hospital in Wichita.

Dan was born April 18, 1956 to Elmer T. and Donna Kay (Anderson) Frick of Kinsley. He married Sherry L. Wassinger in Ness City on October 24, 1981; they separated in 1996. He later moved to Cunningham.

Dan was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend. Along with a passion for his work he always dedicated time to his friends, family, and community, and brought joy to all who knew him.

He was a member of the Cunningham Christian Church.

Dan is survived by his mother Donna Kay Frick of Kinsley; brother Steven Frick of McPherson and sister Karen Frick of Manhattan; sons Christopher Frick of Grinnell and Brandon (Carrie) Frick of Hays; and one grandson, Jasper Frick of Hays. He was predeceased by his father Elmer Frick and sister Karol Frick.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at the United Methodist Church in Kinsley. The family will have private graveside service afterwards, followed by a reception at the United Methodist Church fellowship hall.

In a packed conference room on the campus of Fort Hays State University, 12 College of Education students were recognized for their commitment to teaching science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) in a rural setting. 

The students are all participants in a National Science Foundation-sponsored program named in honor of Robert Norton Noyce, a technology innovator known as the “Mayor of Silicon Valley” for his contributions to the development of the monolithic integrated circuits or microchips that power modern personal computers.

Students who enroll in the program receive $14,591 annually in financial support from the National Science Foundation. Noyce Scholars also build a professional network by participating in campus activities and attending conferences and workshops off-campus throughout their undergraduate years. The scholarship was designed to help future STEM teachers succeed in small, rural schools.

Brother and sister Emma and Tyler Reif are new Noyce Scholars from Hoisington and transfer students from Barton Community College. Emma credits Barton instructor and STEM champion Charlotte Cates with inspiring her to pursue teaching and the field of mathematics. Originally, she considered teaching at the high school level but now is focused on teaching in a rural middle school where she thinks she can have the most impact. She plans to complete her student teaching capstone experience this fall.

Brother Tyler Reif was inspired by Barton Community College Chemistry professor Amanda Alliband to change his initial focus from history to Chemistry.

“Dr. Alliband and Dr. Arvin Cruz at FHSU are great champions of STEM. They helped me solidify my interest in moving over to chemistry,”Reif said. “I’ve always loved history, but last October, I decided chemistry was where I needed to be.”

Also in attendance at the event were new participants in the most recent Noyce Scholars program-a one year post-baccalaureate program designed to transition those who have earned their bachelor’s degree in a STEM field into a career as secondary STEM teachers in rural schools. This new program, announced during a press conference last fall at Fort Hays State University, provides a stipend of approximately $22,000 to help ease the financial burden of the transition and allow these Noyce Scholars the flexibility to focus on their studies if they wish.

FHSU senior and new Post-Baccalaureate Noyce Scholar, Hannah Burks, grew up in the small rural town of Beloit. Her interest in teaching and living in a small town began at a very young age.

“My dad was a very busy as a teacher, administrator, and coach, but he always found time to walk me to school every day. I’ll never forget this experience, and it kind of showed me how great life can be in a small town,” Hannah said. The students are all participants in a National Science Foundation-sponsored program named in honor of Robert Norton Noyce, a technology innovator known as the “Mayor of Silicon Valley” for his contributions to the development of the monolithic integrated circuits or microchips that power modern personal computers.Students who enroll in the program receive $14,591 annually in financial support from the National Science Foundation. Noyce Scholars also build a professional network by participating in campus activities and attending conferences and workshops off-campus throughout their undergraduate years. The scholarship was designed to help future STEM teachers succeed in small, rural schools.Brother and sister Emma and Tyler Reif are new Noyce Scholars from Hoisington and transfer students from Barton Community College. Emma credits Barton instructor and STEM champion Charlotte Cates with inspiring her to pursue teaching and the field of mathematics. Originally, she considered teaching at the high school level but now is focused on teaching in a rural middle school where she thinks she can have the most impact. She plans to complete her student teaching capstone experience this fall.Brother Tyler Reif was inspired by Barton Community College Chemistry professor Amanda Alliband to change his initial focus from history to Chemistry.“Dr. Alliband and Dr. Arvin Cruz at FHSU are great champions of STEM. They helped me solidify my interest in moving over to chemistry,”Reif said. “I’ve always loved history, but last October, I decided chemistry was where I needed to be.”Also in attendance at the event were new participants in the most recent Noyce Scholars program-a one year post-baccalaureate program designed to transition those who have earned their bachelor’s degree in a STEM field into a career as secondary STEM teachers in rural schools. ROZEL – Rodney Boese, 71, passed away May 1, 2023 at his residence in Rozel.

&nbsp;He was born October 9, 1951, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Vernon G. and Ella M. Eilts Boese.

A lifetime area resident, he was a stockman, loved hunting, fishing, trapping, skinning and going to livestock sales. 

He moved back home and worked at Sanford and Rozel Co-op, volunteered on Rozel Fire Department. He moved to Wyoming to work in the uranium mines. Later moved to Arizona to work in the copper mines. Moved back home and worked at Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility, La Crosse Livestock Market, Southwest Livestock in Dodge City and Ryan Farms of Burdett.

&nbsp;On August 27, 1977 he married Mary J. McVey at Larned. She survives.

Other survivors include son Curt Rocha, Rozel; two daughters, Lori (Robert) Larsen, Rozel, Amy Boese, Leon, Kansas; brother Lavern (Rosa) Boese, Great Bend; three sisters, Glenna Belcher, Kinsley, Sandra, (Dennis) Sauer, Rozel, Marva D. McDonald, Kinsley; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert Boese, and Brent Boese; sister Shirley Shank; and one great-grandchild.

Leona Slankard, 101, passed away April 30, 2023, at Larskfield Place Healthcare Center in Wichita. She was born December 14, 1921, in Rural Barton County near Susank, to George J. and Anna M. (Daubert) Maier. 

She married David Slankard May 10, 1941, in Great Bend. He died October 22, 1975.

A long time Great Bend resident, Leona was a self-employed housecleaner and she also did custodial work for Becker Homes. She also worked as a merchandiser at Walmart for several years. 

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in the Ladies and Seniors Groups. Leona enjoyed cross stitching, doing crosswords and puzzles, taking long daily walks, but especially loved playing cards with her family and friends.

&nbsp;Survivors include her daughter, Carol Nix of Wichita; granddaughter Melissa Nix of Wichita; stepgranddaughter Rebekah Unruh and Delmar of Galva; two stepgreat-grandchildren LaTisha Brown and Tyler Unruh; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; sister Eleanora Postlethwaite; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband David; an infant son, Thomas Slankard; two infant daughters, Georgia Slankard and Phyllis Jean Slankard; four brothers, David Maier, Solomon “Sam” Maier, Emil Maier and Edward Maier; four sisters, Hilda Jones, Alma Stewart, Martha Bender and Edna Nuss; and son-in-law Michael Nix.

HENRYETTA, Okla. (AP) — A woman said Tuesday that her daughter and three teenage grandchildren were among the seven people found shot to death at a rural Oklahoma property during a search for two missing teens and a convicted sex offender.

Okmulgee County Sheriff Eddy Rice said Monday that the seven bodies found near the town of Henryetta, were believed to include those of Ivy Webster, 14, and Brittany Brewer, 16, along with Jesse McFadden, the felon with whom authorities said the teens had been traveling. But Rice said the state medical examiner would have to confirm the victims' identities.

“We are no longer looking,” Rice said Monday morning, adding: "Our hearts go out to the families and friends, schoolmates and everyone else.”

Janette Mayo, 59, of Westville, Oklahoma, said the sheriff’s office notified her late Monday that the other four victims were her daughter, Holly Guess, 35, and her grandchildren, Rylee Elizabeth Allen, 17; Michael James Mayo, 15; and Tiffany Dore Guess, 13. Mayo said Tiffany Guess was close friends with Webster and Brewer, who were spending the weekend with the family.

While Rice declined to provide details of how they died, Mayo said the sheriff’s office told her that her daughter and grandchildren were all found shot to death on the property.

Mayo said she and her family did not know about McFadden’s criminal history until a couple of months ago.

“He lied to my daughter, and he convinced her it was all just a huge mistake,” Mayo told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday morning. "He was very demure. He was very standoffish, generally very quiet, but he kept my daughter and the kids basically under lock and key. He had to know where they were at all times, which sent red flags up.”

The grim discovery in Oklahoma keeps the U.S. on a torrid pace for mass killings in 2023 and could push the number of people slain in mass killings past 100 for the year.

The four people&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-mojave-desert-four-dead-15dd8707198fbae3ba464850a5db4b10">found shot to death</a>&nbsp;in an RV in a small Mojave Desert community in California over the weekend represented the 19th mass killing of the year, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usatoday.com/in-depth/graphics/2022/08/18/mass-killings-database-us-events-since-2006/9705311002/">database</a>&nbsp;maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in a partnership with Northeastern University, the most during the first four months of the year since data was first recorded in 2006.

As of the Mojave shooting, 97 people had been killed in the 19 mass killings this year, exceeding the record set in 2009 when 93 people were killed in 17 incidents by the end of April.

The number killed is a fraction of the total number of people who died by homicide for the year. The database counts killings involving four or more fatalities, not including the perpetrator, the same standard as the FBI, and tracks a number of variables for each.

The bodies were found Monday during a search near Henryetta, a town of about 6,000 about 90 miles (145 kilometers) east of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokesman Gerald Davidson said.

A missing endangered person advisory issued earlier Monday said Webster and Brewer were reportedly seen traveling with McFadden, who was on the state's sex offender registry. Oklahoma Department of Corrections prison records show McFadden was convicted of first-degree rape in 2003 and released in October 2020.

Court records show McFadden was scheduled to appear in court Monday for the start of a jury trial on charges of soliciting sexual conduct with a minor and possession of child pornography. A message left Monday evening with McFadden's attorney in that case was not immediately returned.

Brittany Brewer's father told KOTV in Tulsa that one of the bodies discovered was his daughter.

“Brittany was an outgoing person. She was actually selected to be Miss Henryetta ... coming up in July for this Miss National Miss pageant in Tulsa. And now she ain't gonna make it because she's dead. She's gone,” Nathan Brewer said.

At a Monday night vigil, Brewer told hundreds of people: “It’s just a parent’s worst nightmare, and I’m living it."

He said his daughter had aspired to be a teacher or a veterinarian.

Mayo described her daughter, Holly Guess, as a doting mother who cared deeply for her children.

“She was a fantastic mother. She loved her children beyond belief. She was overprotective,” Mayo said. “She was supportive if they wanted to do something. She’d go out 100%.”

Granddaughter Rylee Allen "had a talent with a paint brush,” she said. “Rylee wanted to be an artist and wanted to be a doctor so she could help people.”

Michael Mayo ran track and cross-country, and when he wanted to play football, his mother went out and bought the family T-shirts and sweatshirts to support the team, Mayo said. Tiffany Guess also ran cross-country, she performed in the choir and had just tried out for the cheerleading squad.

“She was the sweetest, most loving girl you’d ever met,” Mayo said. “We called her ‘Tiffasaurus’ because when she’d get mad at you, she’d growl.”

Henryetta Public Schools posted on Facebook and its website that it is grieving over the loss of several of its students.

“Our hearts are hurting, and we have considered what would be best for our students in the coming days,” the note said. Officials said school would be in session, and mental health professionals and clergy would be on hand to help counsel students. But they said they would understand if families want to keep their children home from school.

In a separate Okmulgee County case, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/oklahoma-ac64b7207c71be139fc9125a53d88ce4">bodies of four men were found Oct. 14</a>&nbsp;in the Deep Fork River in Okmulgee, a town of around 11,000 people about 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of Henryetta. Joseph Kennedy, 68, is facing four counts of first-degree murder in that case.

Rolling Hills Zoo welcomed its two millionth visitor through the gates early Sunday afternoon, as Ryan VanZant, the zoo’s executive director, shared the exciting news with Richard Craft, an unsuspecting Fort Hays State student.

Joining him for a visit to the zoo were his girlfriend, Karah Strecker; mother, Rose Marie Craft; sister, Rachel Hale and 2-year-old niece, Grace Lynn Hale. Since Craft’s family lives in Newton, they decided to meet at Rolling Hills Zoo on Sunday “just to get out and enjoy a nice spring day,” he said.

Not a newcomer to Rolling Hills Zoo, this is actually Craft’s third visit to the zoo, as he told zoo officials “I just really enjoy looking at all of the animals. They are pretty cool.”

Craft also loves the zoo’s new Pride of the Prairie exhibit and seeing the lions. And then of course there is the ice cream served at the Overlook Restaurant, another one of his favorite things at the zoo.

As the zoo’s two millionth visitor, Craft received a gift basket valued at more than $575, including a Rolling Hills Zoo family membership, a $200 RHZ gift certificate, and a private golf cart tour of the zoo.

“Thank you! I am beyond lucky to be the two millionth guest,” Craft said, once he had a chance to soak in this unexpected, but very pleasant surprise.

Rolling Hills Zoo will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary in October 2024, at which time it will be on its way to the 2.5 millionth visitor.

This will be Brasser's third-straight trip to the regional meet. Nine teams (three conference champions, six at-large) and the top six individuals not on those teams from the MIAA, Northern Sun and Great American Conference will make up the field at the Central Regional, held this year at Grand Falls Casino &amp; Golf Resort in Larchwood, Iowa May 8-10. The MIAA will make up 32 of the 51 players at the regional, with six teams earning a bid in addition to two individuals. The 2022-23 MIAA Women's Golfer of the Year, Brasser picked up her first of three event victories this season on this course in October at the Augustana Regional Preview. Brasser turned in a two-round score of 4-over 148 to win by three strokes. Brasser has recorded a program-record stroke average of 75.72 through 25 rounds this season. She has won three times in 11 events, placing inside the top five six times and in the top 10 eight times. She turned in eight round at-or-under par, including two rounds of 69 that tied the program record. She also set a program record with a 36-hole tournament score of 4-under 140 at the Newman Spring Invitational. A three-time All-MIAA selection, Brasser finished T-12th at regionals as a freshman before finishing seventh last year, one shot back of the final individual qualifying slot. &nbsp; Patricia Grimes (Pat), 92, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, KS. Pat was born October 31st, 1930, in Kansas City, Missouri to Lucy (Mitchell) Todd and Charles E. Todd.&nbsp; Her family lived in a two-story duplex on Spruce Street.&nbsp; She was born at home. She had a four-year-old sister, Peggy Jane, anxiously waiting her arrival. She began kindergarten at the age of four at the Ashland school.&nbsp; With not having 8th grade, she graduated from high school at the age of 16.&nbsp; She graduated in 1947 and was voted, “The Most Bashful” by her classmates.&nbsp;

Her mom was a homemaker and her dad was a streetcar driver and later a city bus driver on the streets of Kansas City.&nbsp; She remembers getting a dime each week and either going to the movies or enjoying a chocolate malt.&nbsp; &nbsp;

She enrolled in Baker University and earned a bachelor of arts degree in children’s literature.&nbsp; After graduating, she taught for six years in the Kansas City area teaching elementary kids. She spent a year in Germany during this time through the Army’s special services. She and other gals her age would plan and participate in activities for the soldiers stationed there.&nbsp; This trip gave her a wealth of information and experiences that she would treasure throughout her life! In 1957, she met a senior year dental student on the park bench near the apartment building on the Plaza where they both lived with friends.&nbsp; They were married October 21st, 1958 in Lawton, Oklahoma. Looking for a dental practice brought them to Smith Center, their home together for almost 65 years.&nbsp; Bill practiced dentistry for over 50 years, with Pat serving as the secretary many of those years. Pat was a 53-year member of the PEO sisterhood and also enjoyed playing bridge through the years with couples and was also a member of the Entre Nous Club.&nbsp; These ladies began the Old Settler’s Day’s event known as, “The Prairie Dog Saloon.”&nbsp; It provided entertainment for the community that day with singing and skits while raising money for worthwhile causes. She and “Papa Bill” were big supporters of all their kids and later grandkids’ activities.&nbsp; From sports events to dance recitals, they were there!&nbsp; Pat was proceeded in death by her parents Charlie and Lucy Todd, her sister Peggy Short, husband Bill Grimes and grandson Chet William Kuhlmann. Those left to remember and cherish all their many memories are her children Gary Grimes, Smith Center, Annalee Ratliff (Alvie), Athol and Meribeth Lambert (Clark) of Smith Center. Four grandchildren:&nbsp; Zach Lambert of Olathe, Kansas, Sammy Gleason, (Tanner) of Riley, Kansas, Ethan Kuhlmann, (Jill) of Osborne, Kansas and Grant Lambert of Nashville, Tennessee. Seven great-granddaughters have all enjoyed time with “Granny Pat.” They are Cruz Lambert, Tessa, Layla, Luxa and Livi Gleason, and Baylin and Emmie Kuhlmann. A Celebration of Pat’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Smith Center United Methodist Church, 301 E. Kansas Ave., Smith Center, KS.&nbsp; There will not be a public visitation as cremation was chosen.&nbsp; Inurnment will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, KS.&nbsp;

Alberta Fay Douglas, 86, passed away April 28, 2023, in Great Bend. She was born March 9, 1937, at Bazine, KS, at the family farm home, to Henry J. and Elizabeth (Koch) Foos. She attended Bazine Grade School and graduated from Bazine High School in 1955.

&nbsp;After graduating she moved to Great Bend, KS, where she met and married Gaylon Clayton on April 7, 1957, at Bazine. Gaylon passed away on October 1, 1960, due to a car accident. They had one daughter, Charlotte (Clayton) Myers. She then married John “Max” Douglas on June 17, 1962. He passed away December 18, 2007.

&nbsp;Alberta worked at Schlumberger Well Services, Marlette Mobile Homes, McDonald Tank Company, Social and Rehabilitation Services, KETCH (Kansas Elks Training Center for the Handicapped), Saint Francis Community Services, Great Bend Municipal Court and was co-owner of the Kitchen Cupboard in Great Bend. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and VFW Auxiliary. She was a Camp Fire Girls group leader and Camp Fire Director for Camp Chu-Wa-Ni for many years and dearly loved it. 

She loved to watch her KU Basketball games and the Kansas City Chiefs play football. Alberta especially enjoyed family dinners and get togethers. The family enjoyed her fried chicken, homemade ice cream and chocolate chip cookies.

Survivors include her daughter Charlotte (Clayton) Myers and husband Randy of Great Bend; son David Douglas and wife Connie of Cozad, Neb.; stepchildren Debbie Gartner and husband Frank of Dublin, Calif. and Scott Douglas and wife Carla of Brentwood, Calif.; grandchildren Nathan Myers and wife Brianna of Hays, Travis Myers of Great Bend, Denton Douglas and wife Sheena of Tecumseh, Kan; stepgrandchildren, Alesha Gartner of Dublin, Calif. and her partner Jorge Barailar and Matthew Gartner of Sacramento, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Bentley Douglas and Xander Myers; stepgreat-grandchildren, Brayden Barailar and Gavin Gartner; and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;Surviving siblings are Clarence Foos and wife Ethel of Bazine; and sister in law, Enid Foos of Lincoln, Neb. 

She was preceded in death by her parents;  her husbands Gaylon Clayton and Max Douglas; her sister Helen Schaben; and her brothers Floyd Foos and Leonard Foos.

&nbsp;Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 4, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 5, 2023, at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with Pastor Tim Bever presiding. Interment will be in Great Bend Cemetery. 

Memorials have been designated to the First United Methodist Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

She was born March 9, 1937, at Bazine, KS, at the family farm home, to Henry J. and Elizabeth (Koch) Foos. She attended Bazine Grade School and graduated from Bazine High School in 1955.&nbsp;After graduating she moved to Great Bend, KS, where she met and married Gaylon Clayton on April 7, 1957, at Bazine. Gaylon passed away on October 1, 1960, due to a car accident. They had one daughter, Charlotte (Clayton) Myers. She then married John “Max” Douglas on June 17, 1962. He passed away December 18, 2007.&nbsp;Alberta worked at Schlumberger Well Services, Marlette Mobile Homes, McDonald Tank Company, Social and Rehabilitation Services, KETCH (Kansas Elks Training Center for the Handicapped), Saint Francis Community Services, Great Bend Municipal Court and was co-owner of the Kitchen Cupboard in Great Bend. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and VFW Auxiliary. She was a Camp Fire Girls group leader and Camp Fire Director for Camp Chu-Wa-Ni for many years and dearly loved it. She loved to watch her KU Basketball games and the Kansas City Chiefs play football. Alberta especially enjoyed family dinners and get togethers. The family enjoyed her fried chicken, homemade ice cream and chocolate chip cookies.Survivors include her daughter Charlotte (Clayton) Myers and husband Randy of Great Bend; son David Douglas and wife Connie of Cozad, Neb.; stepchildren Debbie Gartner and husband Frank of Dublin, Calif. and Scott Douglas and wife Carla of Brentwood, Calif.; grandchildren Nathan Myers and wife Brianna of Hays, Travis Myers of Great Bend, Denton Douglas and wife Sheena of Tecumseh, Kan; stepgrandchildren, Alesha Gartner of Dublin, Calif. and her partner Jorge Barailar and Matthew Gartner of Sacramento, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Bentley Douglas and Xander Myers; stepgreat-grandchildren, Brayden Barailar and Gavin Gartner; and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;Surviving siblings are Clarence Foos and wife Ethel of Bazine; and sister in law, Enid Foos of Lincoln, Neb. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands Gaylon Clayton and Max Douglas; her sister Helen Schaben; and her brothers Floyd Foos and Leonard Foos.&nbsp;Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 4, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 5, 2023, at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with Pastor Tim Bever presiding. Interment will be in Great Bend Cemetery. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of 31 people convicted of nonviolent drug crimes who were serving time in home confinement, the White House announced Friday.

Many would have gotten a lower sentence if they were charged today with the same offense&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-prisons-donald-trump-police-reform-069bac28c0c05869faf15e2e879e2732">because of changes in the laws</a>. A commuted sentence means they’ll spend less time in home confinement.

The commutations came as the White House announced a set of policy actions across 20 different agencies meant to improve the criminal justice system,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/race-and-ethnicity-crime-massachusetts-courts-gun-politics-6349ecf90445bca896b33ae77f841538">which disproportionately affects</a>&nbsp;Black and other non-white communities. The president announced&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-election-2024-president-democrats-trump-9c72115656855da89a41cac3f79aa65b#:~:text=WASHINGTON%20(AP)%20%E2%80%94%20President%20Joe,president%20for%20another%20four%20years.">his reelection campaign this week</a>, and must keep Black voters in his coalition if he wants to win in 2024.

<a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/04/28/clemency-recipient-list-3/" target="_blank">Those whose sentences were commuted included</a>&nbsp;men and women convicted of drug possession in Iowa, Indiana, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Hawaii and Texas, and they will all finish serving time June 30. If any are in prison, they will finish out their terms in home confinement, and won’t have to pay the rest of their fines which range from $5,000 to $20,000.
