Julius 'Curly' John Bieker

James Lee Stalcup was born on November 15, 1949, in Wichita, Kansas, 
the son of Verdun and Vera Stalcup. He died on October 18, 2022, at the 
Downs Care and Rehab Center in Downs, Kansas at the age of 72.

Jim graduated from Derby High School in 1968, and served as a 
Sedgwick County Fireman and EMT. He also worked at the Sedgwick County 
Zoo.

On March 31, 1979, he was united in marriage with Debra Neifert. Two daughters, Rebecca and Stefanie were born to this union.

The family moved to Glen Elder, where he started working for the 
school district. He served many roles with the school before retiring. 
Upon retirement, he worked many odd jobs to fill his time.

Jim enjoyed coin collecting, coaching his daughters’ softball 
teams, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family, 
grandchildren, and cats.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Debra of the home; 
daughters, Rebecca and husband Tony Prochaska of Simpson, and Stefanie 
and husband Trevor Gardner of Glen Elder; sister, Emilie Lockett of 
Hinesville, Georgia; and grandchildren, Sage &amp; Jacob Prochaska, and 
Elizabeth Gardner.

Graveside memorial services will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 
25, at the Glenwood Cemetery in Glen Elder. Cremation has taken place 
&amp; there will be no visitation. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be 
given to Solomon Valley Hospice, the Glen Elder First Christian Church, 
or Post Rock Humane Society.

BELLE PLAINE, Kan. (AP) — An undersheriff in rural Kansas faces a manslaughter trial Monday for fatally shooting an unarmed man with a homemade beanbag round out of his personal shotgun, a case that comes amid a national reckoning on police violence.

Jury selection will start in the trial of Virgil Brewer, who was with the Barber County Sheriff's Office at the time of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/48f367e57fc14cb39febf89f3d501feb">the deadly encounter with Steven Myers</a>&nbsp;in October 2017 outside a shed in Sun City, about 300 miles (555 kilometers) from the Kansas City, Kansas.

A civil lawsuit brought by Myers’ family against Brewer and then-Barber County Sheriff Lonnie Small was settled in 2020 after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/8480d5726b3275a28130abeeea1faae0">county officials agreed to pay $3.5 million</a>.

Brewer’s criminal trial is expected to focus on whether his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/03fbce83f90a495ba80be7f80a5ce4b2">lack of knowledge and training</a>&nbsp;with the less-lethal munitions amounted to reckless involuntary manslaughter.

Defense attorney David Harger did not respond to messages seeking comment on the case. Brewer has been on unpaid leave since his 2018 arrest. He has been free pending trial.

“The fact of the matter is that it is not going to be a good outcome for anybody, no matter whether or not he gets convicted," Steven Myers' widow, Kristina Myers, told The Associated Press on Thursday. "Yes, it will be over in that sense, but this one bad decision has ruined the lives of so many people.”

On the evening of Oct. 6, 2017, Brewer was carrying his personal weapon when he, along with the sheriff and a sheriff’s deputy, responded to a call about a man holding a rifle on a street after an altercation at a local bar.

About five minutes before the fatal shooting, Small said: “A little luck and he’ll just pass out and die,” a remark captured on the sheriff’s body camera as they searched for Myers. They eventually found him hiding in a shed.

Both Brewer and the deputy later told the Kansas Bureau of Investigation that they could clearly see that Myers was not armed when they confronted him outside the shed, according to the probable cause affidavit obtained by AP.

Body camera footage reviewed by investigators shows Brewer repeatedly told Myers to “get on the ground” before shooting him, while Deputy Mark Suchy gave conflicting commands to “put your hands up now.” Seconds later, Brewer shot Myers with one round.

Brewer told the Kansas Bureau of Investigation during an interview that he was in fear for his and the deputy’s lives when Myers continued to walk toward them, adding that he did not expect the beanbag round to penetrate Myers’ chest.

The deputy’s body camera video showed Myers was not making any aggressive movement at the time Brewer shot him, according to Bureau Agent Brian Carroll in an affidavit in support of the criminal charge against the undersheriff.

“Myers was never told he was under arrest, Myers was never warned that his failure to comply with commands would result in the use of the impending force,” Carroll wrote.

Brewer then discharged his personal weapon at too close of a distance and shot Myers in the chest, a lethal force zone.

Carroll’s affidavit contends that Brewer’s lack of knowledge and training regarding the proper use of less-lethal beanbag munitions recklessly caused Myer’s death. Proper training would have provided critical information about the proper distance to deploy the round and the proper target zone on a person.

Such training would have also informed Brewer about past problems with rectangular-shaped bean bags like the one he used, Carroll wrote. Those are known to penetrate subjects shot with them, and their use has been discontinued for years. The rounds used today are rounded, balloon-shaped bean bags, according to the affidavit.

Before coming to Kansas, Brewer worked in Texas where he was given the beanbag ammunition used the evening of Myers’ death. The affidavit revealed that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation interviewed Travis Martin, the deputy at the Freestone County Sheriff’s Office in Texas who gave Brewer the ammunition.

Martin, who is expected to testify, told the agency that after speaking with the beanbag maker, that type of ammunition would no longer be carried and should not be fired on a person.

Martin told investigators that he “thought he had talked with Brewer about not using the ammunition on a person,” according to the affidavit.

Medical Examiner Timothy Gorrill is also expected to take the witness stand. His autopsy found the cause of death to be a penetrating shotgun bag wound to the trunk with the manner of death ruled a homicide.

Kristina Myers said she has been subpoenaed, adding she hopes to be allowed to watch the trial after her testimony.

“It doesn’t bring him back, but it does give us a sense of justice,” she said. “Everyone, no matter their occupation, should be held responsible for their actions. All actions have consequences.”

Kansas undersheriff faces trial in fatal beanbag shooting

TOPEKA —Just over two weeks before the general election, Derek Schmidt,&nbsp; the Republican candidate for Kansas governor and three-term attorney general, shared a&nbsp; video from President Trump to Kansans.

Kansas&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-2022-midterm-elections-voting-rights-health-d67531f2dd6856ac167ce48b3ec890ab">Gov. Laura Kelly</a>&nbsp;is the only Democratic governor running for reelection in a state carried by former President Donald Trump in 2020. Kelly won the office in 2018 against a fiery conservative after running as a moderate who promoted bipartisanship.

Trump's Vice President Mike Pence came to Wichita Friday to campaign for Schmidt.&nbsp;&nbsp;"It really comes down, right now, to the failed policies of the Biden administration, which Laura Kelly has supported every step of the way," Pence said.&nbsp;

⚽ Tiger women earn No. 4 seed for MIAA Tournament, host UCO Sunday

KANSAS CITY —Two Kansas teens have been charged through criminal complaint in Kansas City, Kansas, on charges related to alleged firearms thefts, according to the United State's Attorney.

Deldrick Bryant, 19, of Kansas City, Kansas, and Benjamin Custis, 19, are charged with two counts of burglary of a licensed firearms dealer.

According to a criminal complaint, on October 16, 2022, the Basehor Police Department responded to a commercial burglary at Free State Gun Company. The business owners told officers an estimated 50 firearms were missing including rifle platforms, shotguns, and pistols.

Also according to the complaint, on October 17, 2022, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary at Up In Arms, a gun shop in De Soto. After reviewing their inventory, the owners estimated 25 pistols were taken.

Surveillance videos from both scenes show a white Ford pickup was used to breach the businesses by ramming the front doors. On October 18, the pickup truck was spotted in Kansas City, Kansas and investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) began tailing the vehicle. 

When law enforcement officers attempted to make contact, the driver hit a parked car and fled into Kansas City, Missouri where Kansas City, Missouri police officers were able to apprehend the occupants in the vehicle. Several firearms reported stolen from the businesses were recovered inside the pickup.

ATF agents searched the home where Bryant resides and recovered more stolen weapons.

The Basehor Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department are investigating the case.

On October 18, the pickup truck was spotted in Kansas City, Kansas and investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) began tailing the vehicle. When law enforcement officers attempted to make contact, the driver hit a parked car and fled into Kansas City, Missouri where Kansas City, Missouri police officers were able to apprehend the occupants in the vehicle. Several firearms reported stolen from the businesses were recovered inside the pickup.ATF agents searched the home where Bryant resides and recovered more stolen weapons.The Basehor Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department are investigating the case.

Fred R. Lovesee, 85, completed his Earthly journey October 21, 2022, at his home in Larned, KS.

He was born January 6, 1937, in Joplin, MO. &nbsp;He was the fifth child of
 eight born to Thomas and Frances (Birkner) Lovesee.&nbsp; He was raised in 
Miami, OK. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers 
and sisters.

After serving in the United States Air Force, Fred moved to 
Hoisington, KS where he met and married his wife of 60 years, Sharon 
(Novotny), on June 30, 1962.

Planting his roots, Fred became a lifelong area resident. He was an 
entrepreneur and founded many of the small-town pizza places in the 
Barton, Stafford, and Edwards County region. In 1985, Fred and his 
family moved to Kinsley, KS where he established Romano’s Pizza.

Fred is survived by his wife, Sharon Lovesee. Additional survivors 
include: four sons, Steve Lovesee, Kinsley, Doug Lovesee, Larned, Ron 
(Kim) Lovesee, Larned, and Joel (Sonya) Lovesee, Leon, KS; nine 
grandchildren, Andrew, Kayla, Paisley, Canvas, Torrance, Taytum, Tinley,
 Sam, and Levi; two siblings, sister, Ruby Smith and brother Tom 
Lovesee, both of Miami, OK.

He is also survived by two of his beloved dogs, Lil Bit and Frisky.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, November 4, 2022,&nbsp; at Beckwith Mortuary in Larned with Pastor Chris Nord presiding.&nbsp;

A celebration of life will be at a later date at Romano’s in Kinsley, KS.

Fred R. Lovesee

Leon Joseph Moeder, 74, died October 19, 2022, at Wesley Medical 
Center, Wichita.&nbsp; He was born February 29, 1948, the second child of 
Engelbert “Bert” and Rita (Sulzman) Moeder.

Leon graduated from Plainville High School and received his 
bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University, in 1972. While a 
student at Fort Hays State University, he was a member of the rodeo 
club, where Leon became a bull rider. &nbsp;In May 1974, he started his 
career as an auctioneer and real estate broker.&nbsp; Leon became CEO and 
owner of Davenport Auction &amp; Realty, Inc., in 1986.&nbsp; In his almost 
50-year auctioneer career, Leon proudly helped with over 3,000 auctions 
ranging from commercial and personal property to diamonds. &nbsp;Most 
recently, he was a substitute teacher for USD 308.&nbsp; With his humor and 
quick wit, Leon quickly gained the respect of his students and loved 
helping to make a difference in their lives.

Leon enjoyed grilling for his family, with steak as his specialty.&nbsp; 
Listening to sports commentaries and watching his beloved Kansas City 
Chiefs, in particular Patrick Mahomes, were some of his favorite 
pastimes. &nbsp;&nbsp;Leon was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, Hutchinson.

Leon held a special bond with his only grandchild, Brailey.&nbsp; From the
 moment she was born, Leon was a proud grandpa and one of her biggest 
cheerleaders.&nbsp; When Brailey had school activities, whether it was a 
sporting or musical event, he strived to be in attendance.&nbsp; &nbsp;Leon was a 
one-of-a-kind dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, friend, cowboy, auctioneer, 
and mentor.&nbsp; There will never be another Leon Moeder!

Leon is survived by:&nbsp; sons, Daron Moeder and Toby Moeder, both of 
Hutchinson; granddaughter, Brailey Moeder of Hutchinson; siblings, Denis

Gay Beth Moore-Briggs, 86, passed away on
 October 21, 2022 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City 
following a lengthy health battle.&nbsp; She was born on November 13, 1935, in Bloomington, Kansas, the daughter of Otto and Helen (Smith) Fritche.

She was raised in Osborne County.&nbsp; After
 completing high school, Gay Beth went on to further her education at 
Fort Hays State University, earning her BS in education.&nbsp; She married Don Moore of Copeland.&nbsp; To this union, three&nbsp; children were born, Dale, Doug, and Vicki.&nbsp; Soon after, she began her career as a teacher in the local school system, a career that spanned 44 years.

A community leader over that same four decades, Gay Beth was active in Haskell County 4-H and Kansas Farm Bureau.&nbsp; She
 was known for constantly educating youth and adults alike, whether it 
be English or math or simply how to strive for success.

In 1985, she became good friends with a colleague, Robert (Bob) Briggs.&nbsp; They were married on June 10, 1990, at the Copeland Christian Church.&nbsp; They enjoyed traveling after retirement, spending time in Arizona during the winter months.&nbsp; Gay Beth enjoyed following her grandchildren’s activities.

Gay Beth is 
survived by her three children: Dale and Faith Moore of Fredrick, 
Maryland, Doug and Shannon Moore of Pittsburg, Oklahoma, and Vicki and 
Troy Hesser of Louisburg; four step-children Rhonda and Galen Berry of 
Port Aransas, Texas, Melinda Fikan of Colby, Rodney and Michelle Briggs 
of Independence, Missouri, and Troy Briggs and Sarah Rains of Sublette; a
 sister, Ruth and Don Wyckoff of Norman, Oklahoma;&nbsp; 13

Nita Elsie (Peterson) Mohr of Great Bend, passed away on October 21, 
2022, at University of Kansas Health Systems – Great Bend. She was born 
on October 22, 1943, at Great Bend, to Clarence Theodore and Jenny Elsie
 (Marsh) Peterson.

Nita, a lifetime resident of Great Bend, was a homemaker and enjoyed 
sewing for her family and others. She enjoyed playing cards at the 
Senior Center, bowling, golfing, traveling, camping and fishing, and 
always looking for a bargain at garage sales. She loved and adored her 
chihuahuas.

Survivors include her husband, Richard; one son, Ronald Wayne Mohr 
(companion Brenda Worley) of Great Bend; two granddaughters, Shelby 
Payne (husband Dane Walker) of Lubbock, Tex., and Calie Payne of 
Boulder, Colo.; a son-in-law, John Payne of Joshua, Tex.; and one 
great-grandson, Nixon Walker.

Nita is preceded in death by her daughter, Rhonda Lynn Payne; her 
twin sister, Rita Mae Roblyer; her brother, Clarence “Pete” Peterson; 
and her parents.

After a record-setting Saturday, Ellis County and most of western Kansas is under a high wind advisory and red flag warning on Sunday.

The K-State Ag Research Center in Hays said the 90-degree high reached on Saturday was a record high for the date.

A strong front entering western Kansas will bring strong southwest winds, with gusts up to 55 mph. The National Weather Service in Dodge City is advising against travel, as there is a high risk of blowing dust and increased risk of wildfires.

The wind will persist until after midnight, and the mercury again is expected to approach 90 degrees Sunday. A high of just 56 degrees is predicted on Monday, and the next potential precipitation will be Thursday night, the NWS said.

Thomas "Tommy" Lynn Rumford, 68, passed away October 19, 2022, at Meridian Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Wichita.&nbsp; He was born June 2, 1954, in Hutchinson, to Charles Floyd Rumford, Jr. and Lola Mayrea (Cook) Rumford.

Tommy was a graduate of Fairfield High School, Langdon, and Garden City Community College, Garden City.

Tommy is survived by:&nbsp; his daughter, Tamara Rumford of Philip, SD; 
mother, Lola M. Rumford of Abbyville; brother, Bronc Rumford of 
Abbyville; and grandchildren, Hendrix Smith and Hadley Vander May.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Floyd Rumford, Jr.

The TMP-Marian girls’ cross country team qualified for the 2A state cross
country meet after a third-place finish at the Great Bend regional held at the
Lake Barton Golf Course.

Stanton
County win the meet with 34 points, Oakley finished second with 66 and the Monarchs
third with 70, two less than Meade.

The Monarchs
had one runner finish in the top-10. Senior Sophie Allen placed seventh with a
time of 21:15.59. Sophomore Ella Bain finished 12th (22:15.80), Michaela Dickman
was 22nd (23:07.75) and freshman Claire Schipppers 29th (24:11.04).

A couple of other
area runners qualified for the state meet with top-10 finishes. Ellis freshman
Avery Boydston finished in second place with a time of 19:37.61. and Trego
freshman Kallan Rothchild placed ninth (21:40.55).

County’s Chesney Peterson won the regional with a time of 17:43.44.

The 2A state
meet will be Saturday, October 29 at the Wamego Country Club.

👟 Monarch girls place third at regionals, qualify for state

Dwight Emmett Wentz, son of Fred and Violet Wentz, was born September
 24, 1951, in Oberlin, Kansas, and passed away at Norton County Hospital on
 October 20, 2022, at the age of 71 years.

Dwight was a lifelong 
resident of Norton and Decatur Counties.  He spent much of his life 
residing at his childhood home, spending the last 32 years of his life 
residing at the family homestead where he grew up.  Dwight graduated 
from Norcatur High School in 1969.  Dwight and Mary Louise Miller were 
married on August 6, 1971, in Norton, Kansas.  They had five children and
 celebrated 51 years of marriage.

Most of his life was tied back 
to agriculture.  In his younger years, he had multiple occupations 
including trucking, welding, maintenance and repair, custom combining 
and even a little time working in the oilfield.  He also worked several 
years at MGM Grain in Norcatur. Those years gave him the experience to 
be successful in later endeavors. As well as production farming, he 
owned several businesses including D&amp;M Service (both the repair shop
 and the fuel business), A&amp;W, Oberlin Sinclair, D&amp;M Auto, and 
D&amp;M Repair (Oberlin.)

He enjoyed traveling, collecting cars, and spending time with family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors
 include his wife Mary, and his children, Galen (Jamie) Wentz of Norton,
 Darren (Lois) Wentz of Clayton, Troy (Jessica) Wentz of Norcatur, 
Katrina (David) Edgerton of Hoisington, Carissa (Jacob) Larue of 
Oberlin.  He is survived by 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. 
As well as brothers Walter Wentz, Carl Wentz, and LaRene Wentz, and 
sisters Florence Marsh, Sylvia Wilroy, and Rosalie Kraft.  He was 
preceded in death by both his parents, two brothers Eugene Wentz and 
Brett Wentz and one sister Karolyn Kingham.

Funeral service will 
be Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at 11:00AM at Pauls Funeral Home, 
Oberlin.  Visitation will be Tuesday, October 25, 2022, from 12:00-7:00 
PM with family receiving guests from 5:00-7:00 PM. Burial will be in Big
 Timber Cemetery.

Francis “Frank” Jacobs, 78, of Topeka, Kansas died Thursday, October 20, 
2022, at Heritage Gardens Nursing home after battling dementia. 

Frank 
was born on October 5, 1944, in Hays, Kansas. He was the son of Edward 
and Katherine Jacobs. He earned two Master's degrees from the University
 of Kansas. He married Alice Jacobs in 1978, but she passed in June of 
2018. Frank had two brothers, Edward Jacobs and Tom Jacobs, and one 
sister, Ephigenia Jacobs. He is survived by his two children, Kevyn 
Jacobs and Dale Jacobs, as well as two step-children, Tom Long and Brenda 
Alfrey. He has 2 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, and 17 
great-step-grandchildren. Frank was a history buff, an amateur 
genealogist, and traced his family tree back hundreds of years through 
multiple countries. He had a life-long career working for the State of 
Kansas in criminal justice, juvenile probation, and social work. He was 
an outdoors-man and enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, and camping. He loved
 to travel and spend time with his grandchildren. Frank also enjoyed 
karaoke and quartet singing. He was as smart as a whip and loved to 
research history, military battles, and could fix just about anything 
mechanical. He will be missed by all of his family and friends. Out
 of respect for Frank’s wishes, there will be no memorial service 
planned. The family will have their own private memorial observance. Dove Cremations and Funerals Southwest Chapel is assisting the family.&nbsp;

Helen M. Davis, 92, Hays, died Thursday, October 20, 2022, at the Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born August 22, 1930, in 
Dorrance, the daughter of James L. and Hattie (Sulc) Gustason.&nbsp;&nbsp;On 
February 7, 1948, she was united in marriage to Roy L. Davis in Hays, and
 they celebrated over 48 years of marriage before he preceded her in 
death on August 21, 1996.&nbsp;&nbsp;Helen and Roy built their beautiful home and 
enjoyed raising their family on the farm, and she proudly lived there 
for over 60 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;From 1970-2000, she worked for the East Plains DHIA 
as a dairy tester and during her employment helped form the state 
supervisor association and served as the treasurer.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was active in 
her community serving as the Buckeye PTA treasurer, president of the 
Buckeye Ladies Club, leader for the Buckeye Junior Farmers 4-H Club, and
 helped at the Ellis County Fair as a superintendent.&nbsp;&nbsp;She enjoyed 
traveling, camping, boating, dancing, and cherished her family.

Survivors include her son: Randy Davis 
and wife Mary of Hays, daughter: Ruby Davis (Mark Rowland) of Eden, NY, a
 brother: Vernon Gustason and wife Coeta of Massachusetts, two 
grandchildren: Rochelle Werth and Robbie Davis and wife Jill, all of 
Hays, six great grandchildren: Maryssa McClure, Brady Werth and fiancé 
Paris Wolf, Rylynn Davis, Reagan Davis, Abbi Rupp, and Leevi Rupp, and 
numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, husband Roy, three brothers: Ernie, Frank, and Roy Gustason, 
and a sister: Elsie Briscoe.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on
 Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with

Helen M. (Gustason) Davis

Avis (Schindler) Look of Hays, KS, formerly of Stockton, KS, 
passed away on October 20, 2022, in Hays, KS at the age of 88. She was 
born on July 9, 1934, to Raymond and Vera (Arrington) Schindler in 
Greenfield Rooks County, KS. She was married to Lester E. Look on May 
17, 1952, in Belleville, KS. They were blessed with two daughters: 
Patricia and Diane.

Avis grew up in Stockton. She 
graduated from Stockton High School in 1952 and married Lester soon 
after. She was a homemaker and kept busy raising their daughters. She 
was a volunteer at the Hays Hospital and Hays First United Methodist 
Church where she was a member. She had a strong relationship with her 
Lord and savior Jesus Christ that helped her throughout her life.

One
 of the greatest joys of her life was her family. Her grandchildren were
 often treated to a trip to the Sternberg Museum, one of her favorite 
destinations. She had special talents at quilting, embroidery, 
gardening, and cooking. She enjoyed collecting recipe books and 
windmills. A trip to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park where 
she viewed the mountains and wildlife was always at the top of her list 
of many travels.

Avis has gone to be with her Lord and 
will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The legacy of her love, 
laughter, and joy will remain in our hearts and memories forever.

Schindler of Hill City, KS, Marvin Schindler of Goddard, KS, and Henry 
Schindler of Great Bend, KS; sisters-in-law, Julie Schindler and Sandy 
Schindler; 8 grandchildren, Judd (Tanya) Remmers, Matt Hrabe, Joel 
(Felicia) Hrabe, Greg Remmers, Emily Hrabe, Abigail (Richard) Kidwell, 
Libby (Lance) Ziegler, and Caroline (Chris) Keas; and 14 
great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her 
parents, Raymond and Vera; siblings, Rita (Gene) Hrabe, Richard 
Schindler, Charles Schindler, and Raymond, Jr. (Shirley) Schindler; and

 </figure>Avis (Schindler) Look of Hays, KS, formerly of Stockton, KS, 
passed away on October 20, 2022, in Hays, KS at the age of 88. She was 
born on July 9, 1934, to Raymond and Vera (Arrington) Schindler in 
Greenfield Rooks County, KS. She was married to Lester E. Look on May 
17, 1952, in Belleville, KS. They were blessed with two daughters: 
Patricia and Diane.Avis grew up in Stockton. She 
graduated from Stockton High School in 1952 and married Lester soon 
after. She was a homemaker and kept busy raising their daughters. She 
was a volunteer at the Hays Hospital and Hays First United Methodist 
Church where she was a member. She had a strong relationship with her 
Lord and savior Jesus Christ that helped her throughout her life.One
 of the greatest joys of her life was her family. Her grandchildren were
 often treated to a trip to the Sternberg Museum, one of her favorite 
destinations. She had special talents at quilting, embroidery, 
gardening, and cooking. She enjoyed collecting recipe books and 
windmills. A trip to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park where 
she viewed the mountains and wildlife was always at the top of her list 
of many travels.Avis has gone to be with her Lord and 
will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The legacy of her love, 
laughter, and joy will remain in our hearts and memories forever.Avis
 is survived by her husband, Lester; daughters, Patricia (Stan) Remmers 
of Sabetha, KS and Diane (Randall) Hrabe of Plainville, KS; siblings, 
Zoe Hrabe of Stockton, Kermit (Barbara) Schindler of Stockton, Kenneth 
Schindler of Topeka, KS, Marilyn (Dwight) Miller of Stockton, Louis 
Schindler of Hill City, KS, Marvin Schindler of Goddard, KS, and Henry 
Schindler of Great Bend, KS; sisters-in-law, Julie Schindler and Sandy 
Schindler; 8 grandchildren, Judd (Tanya) Remmers, Matt Hrabe, Joel 
(Felicia) Hrabe, Greg Remmers, Emily Hrabe, Abigail (Richard) Kidwell, 
Libby (Lance) Ziegler, and Caroline (Chris) Keas; and 14 
great-grandchildren.She is preceded in death by her

Waunda M. White, 61, passed away October 20, 2022, at Pratt Regional Medical Center, Pratt.

She was born October 10, 1961, in Cleveland, Mississippi, the daughter of Dorcey and Joyce Kendell Howell.

A longtime area resident, she was the Activity Director at 
Diversicare of Larned. She was of the Christian faith and a member of 
the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include: three sons, Jeremy Keith White, Great Bend, Justin
 White, Missouri and Joshua White, Larned; companion, Michael David 
Hayes, Larned; brother, Allan Howell, Cleveland, Mississippi; two 
sisters, Camille Yarborough, Starksville, Mississippi, Anita Howell, 
Cleveland, Mississippi; and a granddaughter, Paige White.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt announced Friday that the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana granted Missouri and Louisiana’s request for depositions from top-ranking officials in the federal government, according to a statement from Schmitt's office.

This is movement in Schmitt's lawsuit against top-ranking Biden Administration officials for allegedly colluding to suppress freedom of speech.

The list of granted depositions includes Dr. Anthony Fauci, former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, Director of White House Digital Strategy Rob Flaherty, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, CISA Director Jen Easterly, and FBI Supervisory Special Agent Elvis Chan.

“After finding documentation of a collusive relationship between the Biden Administration and social media companies to censor free speech, we immediately filed a motion to get these officials under oath,”&nbsp;said Attorney General Schmitt. “It is high time we shine a light on this censorship enterprise and force these officials to come clean to the American people, and this ruling will allow us to do just that. We’ll keep pressing for the truth.” The original lawsuit was filed by Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt and Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry on May 5, 2022. Missouri and Louisiana filed a Motion for Expedited Preliminary Injunction-Related Discovery on June 17, 2022, and that motion was granted on July 12, 2022, clearing the way for Missouri and Louisiana to gather discovery and documents from Biden Administration officials and social media companies. The request for depositions was filed on October 10, 2022, and that motion was granted on October 21, 2022, allowing Missouri and Louisiana to depose top-ranking officials in the federal government under oath.
