TRIBUNE - Leroy Harold Mai, age 87, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2023, at the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas. He was born to Emanuel and Madeline Bohl Mai in Greeley County on February 18, 1936. He was a lifelong member of the community.

On October 25, 1976, he married Norma Jean Parker in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She survives.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Sheryl and Michael MacNair of Jetmore, Kansas, one son, Randall Mai of Manhattan, Kansas, his grandchildren Shane and Rashel MacNair of Ness City, Kansas, Courtney and Cody Oswald of Herington, Kansas, Katherine Mai of Manhattan, Kansas, Andrew and Paige MacNair of Goddard, Kansas, Erin and Shaun Delmar of Wichita, Kansas, his great-grandchildren Olivia Oswald of Herington, Kansas,&nbsp; Kylee Delmar and Eric Delmar of Wichita, Kansas, Olivia MacNair and Amelia MacNair of Goddard, Kansas, two sisters-in-law, Linda Gibson of Springfield, Colorado, Joyce and Steve Bozylinski of Thousand Oaks, California, his nieces and nephews Clay and Donna Smith of Nebraska City, Nebraska, Clint and Sena Smith of Spanish Fork, Utah, Lance &amp; Susanne Smith of Vancouver, Washington, Jennifer and Jason Smart of Meridian, Idaho, Cari Smith of Meridian, Idaho, Leslie and Brian Fitzgerald of Pueblo, Colorado, and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Juanita Smith, brother-in-law Eldon Smith, and niece Shelly Smith.&nbsp;

Memorial services will be held on August 26, 2023, (Time and location to be determined), Tribune, Kansas with Joe Reynolds presiding. Interment will follow at the Greeley County Cemetery.&nbsp;

Marcia Lynn “Marcy” Wagner, 71, Palco, Kansas, died Monday, August 14, 2023 at HaysMed.

She was born October 23, 1951 in Anderson, Indiana, the daughter of Paul and Gloria (Ikast) Wagner.&nbsp; 

Marcy was a graduate of Palco High School, Fort Hays State University, and Southwestern College of Professional Studies where she earned a master of education Degree.&nbsp; 

Miss Wagner taught elementary school for 42 years, first in Smith Center and then in Palco.&nbsp; Marcy believed, “teachers plant seeds of knowledge that grow forever.”&nbsp; Inspired by their aunt, two of Marcy’s nieces and a nephew are now teachers and carry on her legacy.&nbsp; After retiring from teaching, Marcy served as the city clerk for the City of Palco.

Marcy was a member of Red Line Church of God, where her father Paul once served as pastor.&nbsp; Marcy was a prolific quilter and loved spending time with her sewing friends.&nbsp; Additionally, she enjoyed reading, watching Hallmark movies, sharing Danish traditions, and playing games; her favorite was Rummikub.

Marcy is survived by her sister, Alesia Prichard of Las Vegas, NV and brother, Kevin (Tama) Wagner of St. Joseph, MO.&nbsp; The loves of her life were her nieces and nephews, Jeremy (Keri) Prichard of Cheyenne, WY, Ariane (Jim) McCracken of Las Vegas, NV, Adam (Emily) Prichard of Watertown, MA, Katherine (Corey) Sanders, of Kansas City, MO, and Mitchell (Heather) Wagner of St. Joseph, MO.&nbsp; She was also Great Aunt Marcy to a dozen of the brightest and most adorable great nieces and nephews.&nbsp; The family would also like to recognize Jane, Marlys, Johni, and all her dear friends for their ongoing care and support.&nbsp;

A celebration of life for Marcy will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at Red Line Church of God, 3308 H Road, Palco, Kansas 67657.&nbsp;

NORTON - The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin work this week to resurface a portion of U.S. 83 in Thomas County.

Project activity will include milling and overlay on approximately 11.5 miles of pavement, starting at the U.S. 24 junction and extending northeast to the Sheridan County line. 

Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work zone and guided by flaggers and a pilot car during daylight hours. Delays of up to 15 minutes should be anticipated.

KDOT expects the project to be complete in late October, conditions permitting.

McCormick Excavation and Paving of Stratton, Colorado, is the primary contractor with a total contract cost of approximately $4.5 million.

Barbara “Joyce” Barnard, 83, died August 15, 2023, at Smokey Hill Health and Rehabilitation, Salina, Kansas. &nbsp;She was born August 22, 1939, at the family home in Wayne County, Illinois, the daughter of William “Harold” and Willena Maurine (Molt) Hosselston. &nbsp;

Joyce graduated from Fairfield High School, Fairfield, Illinois in 1957.

On October 13, 1956, she married David Paul “Pete” Barnard in Johnsonville, Illinois. He preceded her in death on January 4, 2014.

Pete and Joyce moved to Hoisington in the early 70s and she went to work for the Hoisington Lutheran Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide. &nbsp;Joyce was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Hoisington. She enjoyed fishing trips with the family and will always be remembered by her family as a great cook, especially her homemade bread and pies. &nbsp;

Survivors include her four children, Kim Landers and husband Eric of Hoisington; Bryan Barnard and wife Diana of Pratt, Brad Barnard and wife Laura of Hoisington, and Kara Gale and husband Cory of Winfield; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three-year-old son, Ricky Barnard, sister, Virginia Cable, and brother, Gene Hosselton.&nbsp;

Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday with family to receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 21, 2023, at Hoisington City Cemetery, with Ron Bailey presiding.

SEDGWICk COUNTY—A Kansas man accused in a violent, sword attack and later an attack on jail deputies entered a plea in the cases on Monday.

<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=448582">James E. Brown, 58</a>, pleaded guilty to attempted murder, animal cruelty and aggravated domestic battery charges for the sword incident, according to the Sedgwick County District attorney's office.

In March of 2021 police arrested Brown&nbsp; a verbal disturbance with his girlfriend that turned violent, according to police. He grabbed a five to six-foot sword during the disturbance, struck the 41-year-old woman multiple times and stabbed her dog multiple times.  Investigators also learned the woman had been strangled.&nbsp;She was taken to an area hospital for treatment of severe injuries 

On Sept. 8, 2021, two corporals and a deputy were escorting Brown to his cell at the Sedgwick County Detention Center when he produced a metal shank and swung it at the deputies, according to Lt. Benjamin Blick.

A struggle ensued between the deputies and Brown in an effort to control the metal shank and end the assault. Once Brown was restrained, he was evaluated by clinic staff and transported to the hospital for treatment.

Brown was later returned to the Detention Facility. Two of the deputies involved sustained injuries to their hands, according to Blick. On Monday, Brown&nbsp; pled guilty to aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, criminal threat and traffic in contraband in a correctional institution, according to the district attorney's office.

Brown&nbsp; is schedled for sentencing in October.

Kan. man admits guilt in sword attack on girlfriend, her dog 

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The University of Kansas and Kansas Athletics on Tuesday announced the latest plans for the transformational Gateway District, which will feature a reimagined David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, a new conference center and multi-use facilities that will enable year-round use and drive economic development in Lawrence. Plans for the district also include a combination of new retail, dining and other amenities that will drive student recruitment and enhance the campus experience for KU students and employees.

The latest plans for the district – including the first architectural renderings of the project—were shared Tuesday afternoon at an event at the Jayhawk Welcome Center, hosted by Chancellor Douglas Girod, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, Kansas Director of Athletics Travis Goff and other members of the University community.

The Gateway District is a once-in-a-generation project to transform our campus and drive economic development throughout the region. Specifically, this project will create exciting new amenities for students, employees and visitors while providing Kansas Football the facilities it needs to compete at the highest level.

The project will be completed in a multi-phased approach. The first phase of the project will include additional renovations to, and expansion of, Anderson Family Football Complex, the training hub for Kansas Football. Additionally, the first phase will include the construction of new southwest, west and north sides of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, as well as a new conference center on the north end.

Construction on the first phase will begin at the conclusion of the 2023 football season, and will be completed by the beginning of the 2025 season. Kansas Football will continue to play at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium during construction and will have reduced capacity for the 2024 season. Fans are encouraged to purchase season tickets for the 2023 season to have the opportunity to be in the stadium for the 2024 season.

The project will be primarily funded by private funds from donors and no tuition dollars or state general funds will be used. Kansas Athletics has set an initial fundraising goal of $300 million for David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and Allen Fieldhouse capital projects, which is currently under construction. A total of $165 million in gifts and commitments have been secured, including $125 million since the project was announced last October. This represents unprecedented and record-shattering fundraising results, but additional support will be needed in order to fulfill the full vision.

Funding for the project will also include $35 million in ARPA funds appropriated to KU by the 2022 Kansas legislature, as well as up to $50 million through the Kansas Department of Commerce’s University Challenge Grant program. These funds will help fund the aspects of the Gateway District that will drive economic development, including the conference center and multi-use spaces. Additional funds may come from bonds issued by Kansas Athletics, the debt from which would be repaid from new revenue streams generated by the stadium.

“The cumulative impact of a world-class football operations complex and one of the finest game day venues in the country catapults Kansas Football, and our entire athletics program, into this critical next chapter. We have a proud history, but this unprecedented investment makes a powerful statement about an even brighter future and provides far-reaching impact for our university community, fans and football program. I am grateful for the leadership of Chancellor Girod and the visionary donors who have propelled this generational project forward.”

Future phases of the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will focus on the south and east portions of the stadium, as well as development of multi-use facilities to be used throughout the year to generate revenue for academic programming and student success. Although in the early stages of planning, the multi-use facilities will include a mix of amenities that further boost economic development in the area and advance the university’s academic mission, such as arts and entertaining, dining, retail, office spaces and lodging.

The Gateway District, including the upgrades to the Anderson Family Football Complex and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, will create a best-in-class experience for student-athletes, fans and supporters. The first phase of upgrades to Anderson was completed earlier this month when Kansas Football unveiled a new locker room and weight room.

The renovations to the Anderson Family Complex, to be completed as part of the first phase of the project, will equip the building with a state-of-the-art sports medicine center that will feature new hydrotherapy pools, cryotherapy chambers and infrared light therapy equipment. The building, which will be expanded north to connect to the stadium, will also have a new 2,300-square foot player lounge with a nutrition and fuel bar and will have nutrition fueling stations throughout the facility.

Plans are also in place for a 1,200-square foot state-of-the-art photo/video/audio content studio and a 2,400-square foot in-house student-services center with dedicated study rooms and player development and academic support facilities. The team will also have a 180-seat team meeting room with full view into David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. In addition, the facility will be equipped with a 2,400-square foot virtual practice walkthrough room with a video wall that can be combined with the new lobby of the building to create 5,500-square feet worth of multi-functional event space.

The reconceptualized northern entrance to campus will undoubtedly help in economic growth for the city of Lawrence and the University of Kansas. The mixed-use development is projected to amount to $2.4 billion in direct, indirect and induced spending and $1.4 billion in direct, indirect and induced earnings, while supporting an estimated 720 jobs. Construction of the mixed-use development will create an additional 670 temporary jobs, $2.2 million in state sales tax and $2.4 million in state personal income tax. An estimated 500,000 prospective students and guests who visit the University of Kansas each year would utilize and benefit from the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

The new seating bowl will bring fans closer to game action with the first row of seating four feet higher off the ground. On top of improved accessible seating and sight lines, there will be new chairback seating in the west and north seating areas and a videoboard that will be approximately two-and-a-half times larger and 60-feet closer to the field. There will be a 50 percent increase in area per seat and 50 percent more leg room throughout the stadium. Fans can also expect approximately 2,300 club seats in three different club spaces and unique social zones, along with suites 80 feet closer to the field. On the concourses, fans can expect four-times more food and beverage offerings and at least 1.5 times more restrooms.

Local design firms HNTB and Multistudio have taken the design lead on the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. HNTB, headquartered in Kansas City, is a national leader in sports architecture and has been the lead designer for Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California and several other projects from coast to coast. Located in Lawrence, Multistudio places an emphasis on community improvement and immersion and is known as an innovator in the design industry.

KU has also partnered with Turner Construction Company as the construction manager for the project. Turner was named the No. 1 construction manager in the United States by Engineering News-Record and the No. 3 sports builder in the nation. In May, Legends, a global premium experiences company, and Kansas Athletics announced a comprehensive, long-term partnership focused on reimagining the fan experience at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. Legends is working with Kansas Athletics to optimize revenue generation and curate experiences for all KU fans. The Nations Group is serving as the owner’s representative throughout the project, using their industry and market knowledge to assist Kansas Athletics in the project.

 </figure>Construction on the first phase will begin at the conclusion of the 2023 football season, and will be completed by the beginning of the 2025 season. Kansas Football will continue to play at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium during construction and will have reduced capacity for the 2024 season. Fans are encouraged to purchase season tickets for the 2023 season to have the opportunity to be in the stadium for the 2024 season.The project will be primarily funded by private funds from donors and no tuition dollars or state general funds will be used. Kansas Athletics has set an initial fundraising goal of $300 million for David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and Allen Fieldhouse capital projects, which is currently under construction. A total of $165 million in gifts and commitments have been secured, including $125 million since the project was announced last October. This represents unprecedented and record-shattering fundraising results, but additional support will be needed in order to fulfill the full vision.<figure>

KU reveals plans for updated football stadium

Floy Ann Lay was born on October 22, 1943, to Ninuel Blevins and Helen Lola (Newman) Lay in Fallbrook, Calif. On August 4, 2023, Floy went home to be with her Lord and Savior. Her faith in Christ is what helped her make it through life’s ups and downs. 

Floy Ann married Larry J. Holbrook in 1960, and they were blessed with three daughters: Laura, Diane, and Katy. In 1969, Floy Ann and Buster McKnight were blessed with a daughter whom she gave her mother’s middle name, Lola.

In 1972, Floy Ann married Joseph Dale Pettit. Their first home was in Beaumont, Calif. until they purchased property in Yucca Valley, Calif. They built their home themselves, one board at a time, and spent nearly 50 years there until her husband’s passing. Between them, they had nine children.

Floy Ann worked as a nurse aide in Yucca Valley. 

She also worked with her husband, painting and doing home repairs. Her hobbies included watercolor painting, sewing, and creating costumes for her husband to wear when he played guitar and sang at schools and libraries. Floy Ann also enjoyed cooking—she grilled the world’s best BBQ ribs! But her greatest joy came from just being our mom.

There was never a time you would leave her home hungry. If she knew of someone in need of anything—from a shoulder to cry on, to a good laugh—she was always there for them. Mom had a green thumb and could grow anything. She loved living in the high desert and enjoyed the plants and wildlife native to that area.

After her husband passed away, she moved to Stockton, Kansas to be close to the majority of her children who call the state home. Eventually she moved to Dawson Place in Hill City, Kansas.

Floy Ann is survived by her four daughters: Laura (Rick) Murray of La Crosse, Kansas; Kate (Darin) Terry of Woodston, Kansas; Diane Holbrook, also of Woodston; and Lola (William) Reese of Caldwell, Idaho. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Daniel Murray, Kim Blunt, Travis Reese, Chris (Jenny) Murray, Kelly (Dave) Stephen, Christina Hays, David (Tera) Murray, Dusty Terry, Markus McKnight, and Matthew (Chelsea) Terry. Her surviving loved ones also include 24 great-grandchildren, two brothers, one sister, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Just a few of the loved ones waiting for her on the other side include her husband, parents, one granddaughter, three nephews, one niece, one stepson, one stepdaughter, three brothers and three sisters.

Floy Ann will be laid to rest next to her husband on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at 10 a.m. at the Stockton City Cemetery.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The jury in a Reno County murder case did not return a verdict on that count after deliberating for several days.

According to Reno County District Attorney Thomas Stanton, the case against Sandral Wade&nbsp;went to the jury last Wednesday afternoon. The jury deliberated until Monday morning.

The jury deadlocked on the first three counts including first degree murder of Orlando Gipson, attempted first degree murder of Landre Bowie and aggravated robbery using a deadly weapon, found the defendant not guilty of aggravated robbery - infliction of bodily harm, and guilty of criminal possession of a firearm.

In October 2021, Wade was arrested in connection with an early morning shooting in the 1500 block of West 12th Avenue in Hutchinson. Officers arrived at the scene and found Landre Bowie laying in the street with gunshot wounds to his abdomen. He was transferred to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment and survived. Officers then located Gipson in the front yard of a nearby residence with a single gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Bowie testified during a preliminary hearing that Wade was the person who shot him before he crawled out into the street where police who were in the area assisted him. He also told detectives that he could hear Gibson shouting “don’t shoot me.”

A co-defendant Robert Lagrange testified that he saw Wade shoot the two men. He also said that Wade tried to give him a cell phone which he threw in the trash. The phone belonged to Bowie. Lagrange also said that he helped hide Wade at his house for two days before police found him hiding in a closet. 

Stanton said the counts upon which the jury deadlocked will be retried on a future date. No sentencing date on the firearm count was given in Stanton's email to Hutch Post.

A resident of Scott County, Kansas since 1929, he moved with his family from Sedgwick County, Kansas, and grew up on the family farm for miles north of Scott City.&nbsp; He was a farmer and stockman.&nbsp;

Jerry, as he was best known, attended schools in Scott County, graduating with the class of 1946.&nbsp; 

Following graduation, Jerry became engaged in farming with his father.&nbsp; He became a very aggressive farmer, introducing many new practices both in farming and the cattle business, one of which was the introduction of high-moisture corn as cattle feed to Scott County and Kansas.

Jerry was active in his church serving numerous positions.&nbsp; He also served on the Lutheran Hospital Board, Scott County and Kansas Livestock Association, charter member of the Scott COOP, and served as a board member and president of Western Kansas Groundwater Management, Scott County Soil Conservation, Park Lane Nursing Home board, and alongside his wife Joyce, served as chairman of the All-School Reunion Committees in 1980, 1990 and 1995, and Aid Association for Lutherans Branch 3110.

Jerry was an adventurous sort.&nbsp; He sneaked a parental signature from his mother to play football in high school, knowing full well that his dad would say no.&nbsp; He never got over his love for football and got to relive it when his grandson, Erik was on the varsity team.

As a senior in high school, he was a member of the SCHS Flying Club where he achieved a solo license.&nbsp; 

His favorite hobby, however, was probably his work.&nbsp; He took great pride in growing beautiful crops and marketing good cattle.&nbsp; It was rumored that Jerry and his brother Donnie (with whom he partnered for many years) had the straightest rows in Scott County.&nbsp; In 1958 he was the winner of the 100 Bushel Milo Club, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and was the “Outstanding Young Farmer” of Scott County in 1961.&nbsp; His farm became a frequent stop for governors and foreign dignitaries.&nbsp; He served as a mentor for many young men who worked for him as summer jobs.

When his sons grew up they became partners with their dad.&nbsp; The operation has continued to grow despite many tough setbacks.&nbsp; Some hail storms and falling cattle prices tried really hard to put him out of business, but Jerry was a very determined man and always came back fighting.&nbsp; He was very proud of his sons when he opted to turn operations over to them.&nbsp; After Gordon’s death, he again became very proud of his grandsons, Erik and Brian who became partners as well.

Jerry loved having fun too.&nbsp; His hobbies included fishing, hunting, dancing, square dancing, and in later years golfing and traveling especially in the motorhome, and being a super grandpa.&nbsp; Just when he and Joyce were starting to enjoy retirement, their son Gordon’s death made it necessary for him to spend more time at the farm, but Jay gave him a leave of absence to spend winters in Arizona.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, sons Jay W. Wiechman of Kirwin, Kansas, Norman and Laura Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, daughter-in-law Susan Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, sister Velda Riddiough of Scott City, Kansas, 10 grandchildren, Erik and Leann Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, Brian and Mikayla Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, Jaycie Gluck of Savage Minnesota, Jeremy and Annagrey Wiechman of Little Elm, Texas, Kenny and Cyreesa Wiechman of Georgetown, Texas, Jessica and Luke Adkins of Salina, Kansas, Gabrel and Kristen Baca of Austin, Texas, Joseph and Megan Baca of Wichita, Kansas, Jerrad and Stephanie Lewis of Eudora, Kansas, Josh and Cynthia Lewis of Garden City, Kansas, and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Gordon Wiechman, three brothers, Marvin Wiechman, Martin Wiechman, Donald Wiechman, three sisters, Geneva Faurot, Luella Erskin, and LaVera King.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City, Kansas with Rev. Matthew Koterba presiding.

Karen Kay Smith, 81, passed away August 10, 2023, at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, Kan. She was born on October 3, 1941, in Great Bend, Kan., to E.D. and Mary (Bagby) Wright. 

On February 10, 1975, she married J.W. Smith in Brookport, Ill. He passed away on September 3, 2007.

Karen grew up on the family farm near Seward. She showed quarter horses and was a talented athlete, playing basketball, tennis and fastpitch softball.

 She was a 1959 graduate of Great Bend High School then attended Kansas State University and McPherson College, where she was a member of the women's basketball team. After college, she moved to Chicago, where she worked for an accounting firm and was a professional dog handler traveling the U.S. and Canada. 

It was during this time she meant her husband, J.W., who trained and raced standardbred horses. They would continue to train and race through out the U.S. until they moved from Paducah, Ky., to Great Bend, Kan., in 1984.&nbsp;

Karen was a lifelong livestock producer and member of the American Boer Goat Association and American Rabbit Breeders Association. Karen was dedicated to her livestock plus supporting FFA and 4-H programs. She loved sports and was an avid K-State fan. 

Her true pride and joy were her daughter and grandchildren. She traveled many miles supporting them in all their activities, including stock shows, ballgames and swim meets. If you knew Karen, you knew of them, as she was sure to tell you of all their accomplishments.&nbsp;

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa McBride and husband, Ryan, of Hooker, Okla.; and two grandchildren, Dakotah McBride and wife, Hannah, of Belton, Mo., and Sayde McBride. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. Smith; and parents, E.D. and Mary Wright.

Visitation will take place 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2023, with the family receiving guests from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. NORTON - The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin a field survey for a proposed bridge replacement project on U.S. 24 in Osborne County around Aug. 15.

Crews are surveying the South Fork Solomon River drainage bridge, located 3.85 miles east of the Rooks County line. Activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor.

KDOT expects work to be completed in October.

A member of the survey crew will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property if access is needed. Tyson LeSage of Kirkham Michael will oversee the survey for KDOT.

Donald J. “Don” Waldschmidt, 80, Hays, died Thursday, August 10, 2023 at HaysMed and after over 70 years will once again be united with his father.

He was born December 2, 1942 in Hays, the son of Peter C. and Barbara “Barb” (Kisner) Waldschmidt. Don was the oldest of five children and known as “Pete’s Shadow.”

 In 1961, Don graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy and attended Fort Hays State University. 

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a former member of the Victoria St. Fidelis Third Degree Knights of Columbus. 

On October 26, 1963, he was united in marriage to Diane M. Roth at St. Joseph Catholic Church. 

Don was a cement truck driver for Hunter Construction and worked as a shift manager for Cross Manufacturing, Hays International Mailing Services/Alaniz and Sons, and Hadley Hospital/HaysMed. Don enjoyed hog farming in Munjor for 14 years before moving to Hays 1989, but always said the best job of his life was at Wyndam Place when Diane was the manager and he did maintenance work. 

Don enjoyed woodworking using skills passed down from a family of woodworkers and after retirement researched family genealogy and history, calling it Unser Leit Genealogy. Most of all, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Diane of Hays, two sons, Don Waldschmidt II and wife Lisa of Gorham and Doug Waldschmidt of Mesa, AZ, a daughter, Darcy Wellbrock and husband Glenn of Wichita, a brother, Greg Waldschmidt of Kansas City, two sisters, Virginia Kasper of Olathe and Barbara Sanborn and husband Les of Hutchinson, ten grandchildren, Dave Wellbrock and wife Jessi, Amber Wellbrock, Ashlenn Wiltcher and husband Brandon, Eustacia, Vashti, Jada, Asher, Radiah and Zaide Waldschmidt, and Joshua Waldschmidt and wife Alexandria, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, JoAnn Schmidtberger and husband Verlin, and his brother-in-law, Jim Kasper.

Mass of Christian Burial will at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Daise officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 on Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer was tabbed fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Friday (Aug. 11). The Tigers are coming off a strong 2022 campaign when they went 11-3-7 overall and made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2016. It was also the program's first season under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/coaches/tyson-john/1198">Tyson John</a>, who enters his second year guiding the Tigers in 2023. The Tigers were picked where they finished in the conference standings last year. In fact, the preseason poll is nearly a carbon copy of the order finish last year. The only difference is Nebraska-Kearney is picked 11th&nbsp;and Newman is picked 12th. The first 10 are in the same position they finished last year. Central Missouri headed the poll with nine first-place votes, while Emporia State was second and had two first-place votes and Northwest Missouri State was third and had a single first-place vote. Fort Hays State was one of the top defensive teams in NCAA Division II last year, allowing only 0.71 goals per match. The Tigers netted 12 shutouts, which tied the program record for most in a season joining the 2016 squad.  </figure>FHSU AthleticsKANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer was tabbed fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Friday (Aug. 11). The Tigers are coming off a strong 2022 campaign when they went 11-3-7 overall and made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2016. It was also the program's first season under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/coaches/tyson-john/1198">Tyson John</a>, who enters his second year guiding the Tigers in 2023. The Tigers were picked where they finished in the conference standings last year. In fact, the preseason poll is nearly a carbon copy of the order finish last year. The only difference is Nebraska-Kearney is picked 11th&nbsp;and Newman is picked 12th. The first 10 are in the same position they finished last year. Central Missouri headed the poll with nine first-place votes, while Emporia State was second and had two first-place votes and Northwest Missouri State was third and had a single first-place vote. Fort Hays State was one of the top defensive teams in NCAA Division II last year, allowing only 0.71 goals per match. The Tigers netted 12 shutouts, which tied the program record for most in a season joining the 2016 squad. Rebecca Ann Perry was born October 12, 1939, to Albert and Ethyl (Kaump) Stoltenberg in Grand Island, Nebraska. Soon after, Al’s job as Safeway grocery manager relocated them to Smith Center, Kansas. Here she discovered the place she would always consider “home” and met her lifelong friend, Kaye Mason. An only child, there is no doubt she was somewhat spoiled by her father, whom she adored.

Becky attended high school at Colby Community High School, graduating with the class of 1957. A member of the Music Programs Honor Society, Vice President of her sophomore class, Pep Club Vice President, and Band President her senior year, she was also active in Glee Club, Student Council, Kayettes, and the school’s paper where she was a proud sports editor her junior and senior years. She was known by her fellow students for her great personality, her frequent and lovely smile and her mother’s swell cooking!

Becky felt a calling for a nursing career early in life and in the Fall of 1957, she entered St. Luke's Hospital’s nursing program in Denver. 

She met her soulmate, Airman Alfred David Perry Jr., soon after. They were engaged on Christmas Day. Dave was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base and when he received word he would soon be transferred to Michigan, Becky knew she couldn’t live without him. Placing her nursing career on hold, they were united in marriage April 19, 1958, and after a whirlwind honeymoon, began their new life together in Oscoda, Michigan. Their first year was magical and, much to their delight, Deborah Louise was born on their first anniversary. Cheryl Lynn soon followed and although the family was transferred frequently by the Air Force, Becky made a home wherever they landed. Katherine Marie came along in 1964 (oops), and their family was complete. Her love for her husband and children was boundless. 

Becky was active with the base activities and soon was elected President of the Airmen Wives Club. It was in the spring of 1973, that tragedy struck, when a fall took the life of Becky’s soulmate and husband of 15 years. No words could describe her loss. She gathered her children and headed to Hill City, Kansas to be close to her mother and try to heal.

Becky bought a modest home, settled in with the children, and immediately went to work at the Graham County Hospital as a ward clerk. With her mother and eldest daughter’s help with the other children, she enrolled in the nursing program at Fort Hays State University. The next four years, she tirelessly worked at the hospital and was educated, traveling the 120 miles each day to graduate magna cum laude in 1977. Through it all, she remained active in her children’s lives through 4-H, Girl Scouts, Explorer Scouts, and a variety of junior high and high school activities.

Her compassion and empathy for people continued to move her along in her medical career. She trained and joined Graham County EMS and developed a home health program followed by a hospice program for the county. She believed you didn’t work for the people signing your paycheck, but for the patient in your care and it showed in everything she did. 

When offered the job as Director of Nursing, she took it reluctantly, knowing it would mean less time in actual patient care but believing she could make a difference in the totality of care the patient would receive. Becky was the first to volunteer to cover a shift over a holiday or vacation so she could connect more closely with the patients. She was a powerhouse of compassion not only for the patients, but for her staff.

With the children all grown, Becky often talked of retiring on a small piece of land with a garden and some livestock, and this dream started to become a reality when she purchased 19 acres just north of town and placed a double wide and shop on it. Partnering up with her companion, Glenn “Bud” Wright, Ringneck Ranch was born. The pair cleared land, erected pens, and built a tiny town of roosting structures for the many pheasants and quail they raised. Soon the family would find baby pigs and lambs, cozy in their den and storage room, Becky too kindhearted to have them out in the cold of late winter. Calves were added and a large, raised garden was built. Becky loved the antics of the livestock and encouraged all wildlife to find sanctuary on her property. On occasion, she would allow a youth to try their luck at bowhunting turkeys there, but she venomously chased off any other prospective hunters. 

Forever compassionate, she cared for both her mother and her companion Bud at her home until their passing. As her own health began to deteriorate, she moved to Dawson Place Nursing Home in the early winter of 2019. She left this life peacefully, July 2, 2023.

Becky is survived by her daughters, Deb Gansel, Cheryl Lee, and Kathy Cameron; her grandchildren, Michelle Billips, Mike Horton, Katrina Lee, Brittany Lee, David Cameron and Hannah Cameron; her great-grandchildren, Gabi Bryant, Gracie Billips, Garrett Billips, Greeley Billips, Raif Horton, Shannon McDonald, Hope McDonald Smith, Trey Wilcox, Wyatt Rayburn, Pallas Howard, Olivia Cameron, David Bruce Cameron, Khloe Johnson, Elliana Cameron, and Kehlani Cameron; and great-great grandchild, Saige Bryant.

Becky has always understood the joy and heartache of the nursing profession, especially that of the nurse’s aide staff in extended care facilities. As such, memorials will be to the Nurse’s Aide Staff of Dawson Place in Hill City and may be sent in care of Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N. Pomeroy, Hill City, Kansas 67642. 

Services will be held August 18, 2023, at 3 p.m. at Stinemetz Funeral Home, Hill City. The family invites all who loved her to attend. Private interment will be at a later date.

&nbsp;KANSAS CITY —A jury late recommended a prison sentence of 35 years after convicting a Kansas City man, of three felonies in connection with sexual assaults of a child, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

The jury found 56-year-old Rosendo Palma guilty of Attempted Statutory Rape in the 1st Degree With a Child Under 12, Statutory Sodomy in the 1st Degree, Child Under 12 and Attempted Statutory Sodomy in the First Degree, Child Under 12.

The jury recommended 10 years, 15 years and 10 years, respectively, on each conviction. The sentences would run consecutively.

A Jackson County judge will sentence the defendant on October 6.

Celeste I. Dinkel, 61, Hays, peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family after a long-fought battle with cancer.

She was born November 3, 1961 in Wellington, the daughter of H. Raymond and Arleta (Rusk) Allen.&nbsp; 

Celeste was a graduate of Belle Plaine High School, and on February 5, 1988 she was united in marriage to Leon F. Dinkel in Belle Plaine.&nbsp; They made their home in rural Ellis County where they celebrated over 35 years of marriage.&nbsp; From this union came two children, Kayla and Garet.

Survivors include her husband Leon of the home, two children, Garet Dinkel of Wichita, Kayla Davey, husband Aaron, and baby boy Davey due in October of Topeka, two brothers, Reef Allen and wife Sherry of Oklahoma City, OK and Robert Allen and wife Janice of Peck, a sister, Lisa Willems and husband Jim of Farmington, NM, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The family will be receiving friends from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Professor’s, 521 East 11th Street in Hays.&nbsp; A private family service will take place at a later date.&nbsp;

COLBY - The Lon R. Frahm Agricultural Center at Colby Community College will officially open with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 11. The facility is at the north entrance off College Drive.

The need for the 12,400-square-foot building came from limited space to accommodate existing and expected new enrollment in ag-related majors. The facility features six classrooms, the largest of which can seat 53 students, offices for 16 full-time ag employees, and a 28-person meeting room. The lower level also serves as a tornado shelter for the north side of campus.

"We are humbled by the generosity of so many people who contributed to making this facility a reality," said President Dr. Seth Carter. "It will impact Colby Community College students, the community, and the region for many years."

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran is scheduled to attend on the 11th, as he did last October when he helped the college break ground. Moran was instrumental in securing some of the funding through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023. Nearly $533,000 was Congressionally-directed for use in the college's agriculture and dental hygiene programs.

Funding also came from several donors and other grants, the largest being an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) contribution of $1,843,594.

Over the last three years, CCC has expanded agricultural offerings and opportunities that serve the region through developing additional certificates and tracks, enhancing remote student learning, and hiring additional ag faculty.

 Nearly 9,000 feet of fence was installed at the college farm in addition to hauling in several thousand square feet of dirt to resolve longstanding drainage problems. 

In January 2022, the college received a Department of Education Rural Postsecondary Economic Development grant for more than $1.23 million over three years to strengthen higher education credentials among rural students.

The facility is at the north entrance off College Drive.The need for the 12,400-square-foot building came from limited space to accommodate existing and expected new enrollment in ag-related majors. The facility features six classrooms, the largest of which can seat 53 students, offices for 16 full-time ag employees, and a 28-person meeting room. The lower level also serves as a tornado shelter for the north side of campus."We are humbled by the generosity of so many people who contributed to making this facility a reality," said President Dr. Seth Carter. "It will impact Colby Community College students, the community, and the region for many years."U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran is scheduled to attend on the 11th, as he did last October when he helped the college break ground. Moran was instrumental in securing some of the funding through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023. Nearly $533,000 was Congressionally-directed for use in the college's agriculture and dental hygiene programs.Funding also came from several donors and other grants, the largest being an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) contribution of $1,843,594.Over the last three years, CCC has expanded agricultural offerings and opportunities that serve the region through developing additional certificates and tracks, enhancing remote student learning, and hiring additional ag faculty. Nearly 9,000 feet of fence was installed at the college farm in addition to hauling in several thousand square feet of dirt to resolve longstanding drainage problems. In January 2022, the college received a Department of Education Rural Postsecondary Economic Development grant for more than $1.23 million over three years to strengthen higher education credentials among rural students.
