Brian Christopher Thoman, formerly of Concordia, passed away at his 
home in Indianapolis, Indiana, on December 16, 2022. He was born on 
October 26, 1983, in Concordia to Gerald and Marilyn (Sorell) Thoman.

Brian
 attended Concordia Jr./Sr. High School, graduating with the class of 
2002. After graduating high school, Brian attended Cloud County 
Community College where he participated in yell leading and pep band. 

After college, Brian married Casey Hitchell and they relocated to Indiana, when they later divorced. 

Brian
 enjoyed meeting new people, attending concerts, and trying out new 
recipes. Brian spent the last two and a half years as a chef at Big 
Woods restaurant and distillery in Indianapolis.

Survivors include
 his daughter Morgan of Indianapolis; mother Marilyn Thoman of 
Concordia; brother Doug Thoman (Holly) of Belleville; sister Ashley 
Sheely (Andrew) of Schoenchen, KS; two nephews, two nieces; eight aunts,
 four uncles, and 22 cousins.

He is proceeded in death by his 
father Gerald Thoman, uncles Barry Thoman, Dale Revell, Jeff Thoman, and
 Gary Thoman; aunts Coleen Sorell, Kelly Thoman, and Rhonda Thoman; 
Grandparents, Jerome and Rita Sorell, and Wilfred (Tommy) and Margret 
(Jane) Thoman.

A memorial service for Brian was Tuesday, April 4th, 2023, at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home with Fr. David 
Metz officiating and burial following at St. Concordia Cemetery, 
Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

WASHINGTON (AP) — Major oil-producing countries led by Saudi Arabia said they're&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/saudi-oil-production-cut-6d34316ce6820c749d2a6cd66a9fffea">cutting supplies of crude</a>&nbsp;— again. This time, the decision was a surprise and is underlining worries about where the global economy might be headed.

Russia is joining in by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-business-65edbc5ba28370c0face621b7db0ce74">extending its own cuts</a>&nbsp;for the rest of the year. In theory, less oil flowing to refineries should mean higher gasoline prices for drivers and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-inflation-economy-moscow-prices-9bcc886c4d5f8d341cf8939f88705781">could boost the inflation</a>&nbsp;hitting the U.S. and Europe. And that may also help Russia weather Western sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine at the expense of the U.S.

The decision by oil producers, many of them in the OPEC oil cartel, to cut production by more than 1 million barrels a day comes after prices for international benchmark crude slumped amid a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-economic-impact-ef6e4c4443743ccbf7740892fb0b4f3b?utm_source=homepage&amp;utm_medium=TopNews&amp;utm_campaign=position_09">slowing global economy</a>&nbsp;that needs less fuel for travel and industry.

It adds to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-inflation-health-germany-elections-d873521f8b165774de3902439dd5a6ee">cut of 2 million barrels per day</a>&nbsp;announced in October. Between the two cuts, that's about 3% of the world's oil supply.

Here are key things to know about the cutbacks:

Saudi Arabia, OPEC's dominant member, said Sunday that the move is “precautionary” to avoid a deeper slide in oil prices.

Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman has consistently taken a cautious approach to future demand and favored being proactive in adjusting supply ahead of a possible downturn in oil needs.

That stance seemed to be borne out as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-prices-5f010ed0b66fb71e8d46040419a70203">oil prices fell from highs</a>&nbsp;of over $120 per barrel last summer to $73 last month. Prices jumped after Sunday's announcement, with international benchmark Brent&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/03d9d1bfb51e2ce4a42bf7744bf1bafa">crude trading at about $85</a>&nbsp;on Monday, up 6%.

With fears of a U.S. recession exacerbated by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/banks-federal-reserve-silicon-valley-lending-rescue-a04875a164165b50e971ff4576bf4e27">bank collapses</a>, a lack of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/europe-inflation-economic-growth-5fa7942504507e3ca708c8e4591ed8d8">European economic growth</a>&nbsp;and China’s rebound from COVID-19 taking longer than many expected, oil producers are wary of a sudden collapse in prices like during the pandemic and the global financial crisis in 2008-2009.

Capital markets analyst Mohammed Ali Yasin said most people had been waiting for the June 4 meeting of the OPEC+ alliance of OPEC members and allied producers, most prominently Russia. The decision underlined the urgency felt by producers.

“It was a surprise to all, I think, watchers and the market followers,” he said. “The swiftness of the move, the timing of the move and the size of the move were all significant.”

The aim now is to ward off "a continous slide of the oil price” to levels below $70 per barrel, which would be “very negative” for producer economies, Yasin said.

Part of the October cut of 2 millions barrels per day was on paper only as some OPEC+ countries aren’t able to produce their share. The new cut of 1.15 million barrels per day is distributed among countries that are hitting their quotas — so it amounts to roughly the same size cut as in October.

Governments announced the decision outside the usual OPEC+ framework. The Saudis are taking the lead with 500,000 barrels per day, with the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iraq, Oman, Algeria and Kazakhstan contributing smaller cuts.

WILL THE PRODUCTION CUT MAKE INFLATION WORSE?

It certainly could. Analysts say supply and demand are relatively well balanced, which means production cuts could push prices higher in coming months.

The refineries that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russian-diesel-fuel-embargo-explainer-28b9043593c7cb92e032aa451c837b39">turn crude into gasoline, diesel and jet fuel</a>&nbsp;are getting ready for their summer production surge to meet the annual increase in travel demand.

In the U.S., gasoline prices are highly dependent on crude, which makes up about half of the price per gallon. Lower oil prices have meant U.S. drivers have seen the average price fall from records of over $5 per gallon in mid-2022 to $3.50 per gallon this week, according to motor club AAA.

The cuts, if fully implemented, “would further tighten an already fundamentally tight oil market,” Jorge Leon, senior vice president at Rystad Energy, said in a research note. The cut could boost oil prices by around $10 per barrel and push international Brent to around $110 per barrel by this summer.

Those higher prices could fuel global inflation in a cycle that forces&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/federal-reserve-inflation-banks-interest-rates-jobs-91a9185ebce972bbf5ab1f46654f1a53">central banks to keep hiking interest rates</a>, which crimp economic growth, he said.

Given the fears about the overall economy, “the market may interpret the cuts as a vote of no confidence in the recovery of oil demand and could even carry a downside price risk — but that will only be for the very short term,” Leon said.

Moscow says it will extend a cut of 500,000 barrels per day through the rest of the year. It needs oil revenue to support its economy and state budget hit by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/european-union-russia-government-moscow-europe-china-a855facf78132a8805c9ba52dd0fab60">wide-ranging sanctions</a>&nbsp;from the U.S., European Union and other allies of Ukraine.

Analysts think, however, that Russia's cut may simply be putting the best face on reduced demand for its oil. The West shunned Russian barrels even before sanctions were imposed, with Moscow managing to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-politics-business-china-middle-east-b6a90423ee7e2245e3eafc713083896f">reroute much of its oil to India, China</a>&nbsp;and Turkey.

But the Group of Seven major democracies imposed a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-business-moscow-europe-european-union-825506b6a349cce7e5971c0ac550aeaa">price cap of $60 per barrel</a>&nbsp;on Russian shipments, enforced by bans on Western companies that dominate shipping or insurance. Russia is selling oil at a discount, with revenue sagging at the start of this year.

President Joe Biden addressed the OPEC+ cut on Monday before returning to the White House from a trip to Minnesota, predicting, “It’s not going to be as bad as you think.”

Earlier, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby expressed U.S. opposition to the move, saying, “We don’t think that production cuts are advisable at this moment given market uncertainty, and we made that clear.”

But he insisted that the oil market is in a different place from last year when prices surged following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“We’re focused on prices, we’re not focused on barrels,” he told reporters Monday, adding that the U.S. was given a heads-up before the announcement.

Biden responds to cuts by oil producers that could boost gas prices

SALINE COUNTY —A Kansas man is back in jail after his third arrest in less than a year.&nbsp; 

&nbsp;In June of 2022,&nbsp; David Boeschling, 24, Minneapolis was accused of taking $500 in cash from a video game at The Alley, 115 E. Ash Street, in Salina. Police arrested him on theft and drug charges.&nbsp; 

In October, Boeschling was in jail on a warrant for failure to appear and requested drug and weapons charges, after police found him with&nbsp; a 9mm Canik in the parking lot of a Salina mote.

Just after 6p.m. Sunday, police responded to multiple alarms in a storage building at 1007 W. North Street in Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

Officers observed a white male wearing a blue hooded jacket, hat, and backpack running through the building. When the officers went around the building, they saw the man later identified as Boeschling standing in a tree line west of the building.

Police arrested him on requested charges of Trespassing, Interference with a law enforcement officer, Possession of methamphetamine and Possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kan. man who allegedly took $500 from video game is back in jail

Thomas “Tom” Meridith Wasinger,72, formerly of Ellis, Kansas, passed 
away Wednesday, March 22, 2023, of a heart attack at his home in 
Lawrence.&nbsp;

Tom was born at St. Anthony’s Hospital on October 28, 1950. He was a 
graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy, now known as Thomas More 
Prep-Marian in Hays.&nbsp; Upon graduation, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy.&nbsp; 
He was very proud of his service and had fond memories of serving his 
country.

After returning to Ellis, Tom resumed the activities he had grown to 
love, boating, water skiing, and fishing.&nbsp; Tom discovered his talent for
 driving and operating large trucks and worked for Arrow Trucking and 
later Keller Brothers Inc. in Ellis.&nbsp;

In retirement, he moved to Lawrence to be closer to family.&nbsp;

He enjoyed watching and supporting his favorite sporting teams, the 
KC Royals, the KU Jayhawks, and the Kansas City Chiefs.&nbsp; Tom also 
liked going to the casinos with his uncle.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his father, Meridith, a brother, Michael, and his brother-in-law, Dan Heath.

Tom is survived by his mother, Agnes (Nitzie) Rupp Wasinger of 
Lawrence, a sister, Mary Jo Heath, Lawrence, nephew, Kevin Heath, wife, 
Meagan, children, Alexandra, Owen, and Lily, of Dublin, Ireland and 
Tom’s niece, Elizabeth Heath of Lawrence and many extended relatives and
 friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 
2023, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays, KS.&nbsp; Father Curtis Carlson
 will be presiding.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow the mass at St. Joseph’s 
Cemetery.

Prep-Marian in Hays and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary,

Lawrence.&nbsp;Tom was born at St. Anthony’s Hospital on October 28, 1950. He was a 
graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy, now known as Thomas More 
Prep-Marian in Hays.&nbsp; Upon graduation, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy.&nbsp; 
He was very proud of his service and had fond memories of serving his 
country.After returning to Ellis, Tom resumed the activities he had grown to 
love, boating, water skiing, and fishing.&nbsp; Tom discovered his talent for
 driving and operating large trucks and worked for Arrow Trucking and 
later Keller Brothers Inc. in Ellis.&nbsp;In retirement, he moved to Lawrence to be closer to family.&nbsp;He enjoyed watching and supporting his favorite sporting teams, the 
KC Royals, the KU Jayhawks, and the Kansas City Chiefs.&nbsp; Tom also 
liked going to the casinos with his uncle.&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his father, Meridith, a brother, Michael, and his brother-in-law, Dan Heath.Tom is survived by his mother, Agnes (Nitzie) Rupp Wasinger of 
Lawrence, a sister, Mary Jo Heath, Lawrence, nephew, Kevin Heath, wife,

Wheat farmers are, by nature, optimistic, but that optimism is starting to wane in southwest Kansas, where much of the wheat that was drilled last fall has yet to emerge.

Only 19% of the Kansas wheat crop is currently rated in good to excellent condition, with another 52% rated poor to very poor, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. According to the March 27 report, 77% of subsoil moisture supplies are rated short to very short.

“We’re eating through subsoil moisture,” said Tyler Ediger who farms near Meade, Kansas. “We need a slow inch to inch and a half of moisture.”

Average annual precipitation for the area is 23 inches, but over the past year, they’ve received roughly half that.

Still, Ediger says they’re better off than most in the area, having received a half inch a couple weeks ago. Their fields have a stand, so they’re not blowing yet, but winds have been strong and sustained for much of the area.

North of Lakin in Kearny County, Gary Millershaski’s fields aren’t faring as well. An area that typically gets 18.8” of annual precipitation, they’ve only received 8.6” over the past 365 days. While last year’s crop was also raised in drought conditions, it had the benefit of some subsoil moisture, which has all but been depleted by now. Even the residue left from last year’s crop has been reduced by wind and drought.

“We’re totally out of residue,” Millershaski said. “There’s nothing out there.”

He said insurance adjusters will be in the area over the next couple weeks. Many of the fields that haven’t even emerged will be adjusted out, giving farmers like Millershaski few options for ways to protect the blowing soil.

“I’m not going to chase another crop in dry soil,” he said. “Right now, it’s all about getting by and spending the least amount possible.”

In Sheridan County, Brett Oelke’s fields are surviving on half their average precipitation over the past two years as well.

“We’re pretty fortunate right now,” he said, because the moisture on this wheat crop has come with a timely three-quarters of an inch of rain in October when it was drilled and another inch and a half of moisture from snow since January.

Oelke’s moisture probe proved that even though his area has gotten some timely moisture, the crop is far from trouble. Reaching only two feet down, he said last year’s subsoil moisture was four feet.

“We’re 22 to 24 inches behind over the past few years,” he said.

In the sandy soils of Barber County, farmers are also dealing with less than half their average moisture.

“We need a rain really bad — and soon,” Chris Boyd said.

The wheat plants are small and don’t have many tillers. Fields in the Isabel area have received only one inch of rain total since the crop was planted.

In addition to fields that have been blown out completely from strong winds, they are also dealing with winter grain mites and army cut worms, which will limit yield potential. These pests can be controlled by applying an insecticide or pesticide, an added expense for a crop without a lot of potential.

“We were blessed with a nice harvest last year, but that crop used all of the subsoil moisture,” Boyd said. “With virtually no moisture on this current crop and nothing in the forecast, producers are faced with difficult decisions on how many more inputs — such as insecticide for grain mites — to invest on a potential crop failure.”

Rain is critical right now as temperatures begin to warm up and the wheat crop comes out of dormancy.

“We’ll take whatever moisture we can get,” said Millershaski.

With hit and miss showers mostly avoiding so﻿uthwest Kansas this past week and few scattered showers forecast in the next 10 days, farmers remain hopeful for additional timely rains.

“We’ll stay optimistic,” Ediger said.

Because of the heavier clay soils in the area, soil samples show that there are not a lot of nutrient requirements because of failed crops last fall, and only about half of usual nitrogen rates need to be applied. Over the past two weeks, Tanner reports he has been banding fertilizer on. Because of the cold temperatures in the area, the wheat is just starting to green up, so producers are still waiting to see what it will look like coming out of dormancy.

There are a few summer fallow acres that look decent and some wheat behind corn that looks ok. Wheat behind soybeans looks really rough. They are thinking about having an adjuster come out to look at some of their wheat.

The area is pretty dry, but Schemm said they were blessed with some snow that equated to 50 to 60 hundredths of moisture. They do see some potential in the crop, but it has been cold. The wheat took some hits of cold with no snow cover, so there may be some freeze damage.

Crop adjusters are coming out next week. Millershaski estimates that two thirds of his wheat will be abandoned, but he can’t plant a spring crop because there is no subsoil moisture. There’s very little residue left and the fields are blowing.

Suppes reported that one quarter of the wheat is not up yet and will be turned in to adjusters. He did topdress, but overall, this is a worse crop than last year.

Keesling reported they&nbsp;have an adjuster coming out to look at one third of their wheat. The conditions are not good. He said they've only received 1/2" of moisture since January 1 and 1/10" in March. Things are tough. With the extremely sandy soils, there’s going to be a lot of abandonment. Wheat is blowing out.

Wheat stands are a bit patchy, but it’s starting to green up nicely. A lot of fertilizer top dressing is going on in the area, and producers have pulled cattle off. They are dry compared to normal, but are fortunate to have received some moisture. They will need more rain as the wheat starts growing again this spring.

Wheat is greening up and looks good. They received some moisture three weeks ago. As you get to Pratt and west, the conditions really starts tapering off.

Wheat Scoop: Waning optimism on potential of Kansas wheat crop

Josephine Marie (Holzmeister) Kuntz, 99, of Quinter, Kansas, passed 
away on&nbsp;March 28, 2023, at the Gove County Long Term Care in Quinter. 
Josephine was&nbsp;born on January 23, 1924, on a farm North of Bison, KS to 
John and Susan (Herman) Holzmeister.

She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Loretta, then graduated 
from high school at Otis, KS. After graduation she attended Salt City 
Business College in Hutchinson, KS, graduated and moved to Salina, KS 
where she worked for two years at the Smokey Hill Air Base as a 
secretary/typist. Her parents then moved from rural Rush County to a 
farm North of Quinter. She then moved home, and there she met her future
 husband, Nicholas Kuntz, in 1945, later marrying on October 15, 1946. 
He preceded her in death on August 7, 2001.

Josephine was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 
Park, KS and the Sacred Heart Altar Society. She will be remembered for 
her daily devotion to prayer, many times you would see or hear her 
praying as she worked. Josephine worked alongside her husband on the 
farm, raised chickens for eggs and butchering, and milked cows for the 
sale of cream, milk, and butter to area residents most of her adult 
life. She loved to grow produce to can and feed her large family in the 
spring and summer. She was a wonderful cook and baker and rarely used 
recipes. Josephine also shared her love to dance with her husband, they 
were very well known for leading wedding marches.

She is survived by her six children, four boys, D.Allen (Esta), 
Michael (Jone), Carlyle, and Charles (Deb), all of Quinter, and two 
daughters, Kathryn Fossett of Golden, Colorado, and Lois Ann (Philip) 
McClanahan of Salina, 11 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 6 great 
grandchildren, and 14 step-great grandchildren, 4 step-great great 
grandchildren, one brother, Edwin Holzmeister of Hays, one 
sister-in-law, Pauline Holzmeister of Salina, and many nieces and 
nephews.

Josephine is preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers,
 Aaron (Joyce), Sylvester (Geneva), Lawrence (Francis), Hubert 
(Elenora), Abraham, and Arnold, one sister, Frieda (George) Waldman, 
brother-in-law, Carl Headrick, and one sister-in-law, Darlene 
Holzmeister.

Funeral service will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in 
Park on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in the 
Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home, 
Quinter, on Friday, March 31, 2023, starting at 6:00 p.m. with a vigil 
following at 7:30 p.m.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The first thing that Kansas City Royals owner John Sherman thinks about when he wakes up each morning is how the club, stuck in what seems like an interminable rebuild, will play on that particular day.

Not where they will play four or five years down the road.

Yet given the modest expectations for a team that lost nearly 100 games a year ago, it makes sense many Royals fans are just as interested — quite possibly more so — in the plans for a downtown ballpark than whether infielder Bobby Witt Jr. can double down on his brilliant rookie season or pitcher Brady Singer can truly become a staff ace.

That's why Sherman's second thought probably moves to the downtown ballpark, too.

“This is a huge decision, and I look at it as maybe the most important decision we'll make as long as we have the privilege of stewarding this team,” Sherman said before the Royals held a final workout Wednesday ahead of opening day. “I'm probably as anxious as you to get moving on that, but it's a complicated process.”

The Royals have called Kauffman Stadium home since the sister to Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, opened 50 years ago next month.

And while most stadiums are replaced because they have become outdated, the unique, space-aged look of Kauffman Stadium — built during an era in which teams trended toward impersonal, multisport concrete donuts for their homes — remains beloved by Royals fans and visitors alike.

The problem is that despite numerous renovations over the years, the very concrete holding the ballpark together has begun to crumble in places. The cost simply to repair and maintain the ballpark has become prohibitive.

So with the decision essentially made for them to build an entirely new stadium, the Royals revealed plans to build an entire development in the same mold of The Battery Atlanta, where the Braves built Truist Park, and the Ballpark Village in St. Louis, where the new Busch Stadium is merely the centerpiece of a whole entertainment district.

No site has been secured, but several of the most promising are in downtown Kansas City, where the Power &amp; Light District along with T-Mobile Center have spearheaded a successful era of urban renewal.

Sherman has said that private funds would cover the majority of the stadium cost and the entire village, each carrying a price tag of about $1 billion.

But if any public funding will be used, as it was to build and maintain Kauffman Stadium, then it would need to be voted upon, and the earliest that it could show up on a ballot would be August.

“You look at Atlanta, they took some raw ground — they started with 85 acres — and that has been a complete home run,” said Sherman, who purchased the Royals in August 2019, shortly before the pandemic wreaked havoc on team finances.

“This is one of the reasons we want to do this: That's helped the Braves become more competitive,” Sherman said of the vast potential for increased revenue for one of the smallest-market teams in baseball. “They have locked up and extended the core of their future, and the Braves are in a great position from a baseball standpoint.”

So perhaps the first two thoughts Sherman has each day — about performance and the future — are one and the same.

When it comes to the team itself, the Royals were largely quiet throughout the winter, though that was by design.

Rather than spending heavily on free agents that might help them win a few more games, they decided to stay the course with a promising young roster in the hopes that the development of those players would yield better results.

In fact, Sherman said, the club has been discussing extensions for some of the Royals' foundational pieces — presumably Witt, who was fourth in voting for AL rookie of the year, and Singer, who was 10-5 with a 3.23 ERA last season.

“We're having conversations about that as we speak," Sherman said. "We have a number of young players that we're trying to evaluate and we're talking to their representatives about what might work.”

Just because the Royals' roster largely looks the same, that doesn't mean nothing has changed. The Royals fired longtime general manager Dayton Moore in September and moved J.J. Picollo to the role, then fired manager Mike Matheny in October and replaced him with longtime Indians and Rays coach Matt Quatraro.

Sherman said the new voices created a palpable energy in spring training that he hopes carries into the regular season.

“When we acquired the team, we had three primary objectives,” Sherman said. "One was to win more games; we're working on that. The second was to secure the future; that's what (the stadium) is. And the third was to do good in the community.

“But the first priority,” he said, “is really the on-field product. That's what really lifts everything else up.”

Iraqi deaths are estimated in the hundreds of thousands, and nearly 5,000 U.S. troops were killed in the war after President George W. Bush’s administration&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iraq-war-wmds-us-intelligence-f9e21ac59d3a0470d9bfcc83544d706e">falsely claimed</a>&nbsp;that Saddam Hussein was stockpiling weapons of mass destruction.

“This body rushed into a war,” said Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat who has pushed for years to repeal the powers. The war has had “massive consequences,” Kaine said.

Senators voted 66-30 to repeal the 2002 measure and also the 1991 authorization that sanctioned the U.S.-led Gulf War. Kansas Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall joined 16 other Republicans to vote for the measure including Missouri Senators Josh Hawley and Eric Schmitt.

If passed by the House, the repeal would not be expected to affect any current military deployments. But lawmakers in both parties are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-joe-biden-middle-east-iraq-government-and-politics-184f804c1202c0808f986425fd75341f">increasingly seeking</a>&nbsp;to claw back congressional powers over U.S. military strikes and deployments, and some lawmakers who voted for the Iraq War two decades ago&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2002-iraq-war-vote-senate-authorization-reflection-60989b19ca76a2d9c2e2ff1bad97dc5a">now say</a>&nbsp;that was a mistake.

“Americans want to see an end to endless Middle East wars,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, adding that passing the repeal “is a necessary step to putting these bitter conflicts squarely behind us.”

Supporters, including almost 20 Republican senators, say the repeal is crucial to prevent future abuses and to reinforce that Iraq is now a strategic partner of the United States.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mcconnell-iraq-war-repeal-senate-64270ec9085831c4f0be423702a7561e">Opponents</a>&nbsp;say the repeal could project weakness as the U.S. still faces conflict in the Middle East.

“Our terrorist enemies aren’t sunsetting their war against us,” said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who is at home&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mitch-mcconnell-fall-concussion-therapy-f7af2c851b96e5fdccb7d2829e869f6a">recovering from a fall</a>&nbsp;earlier this month and missed the vote. “When we deploy our servicemembers in harm’s way, we need to supply them with all the support and legal authorities that we can.”

The repeal’s future is less certain in the House, where 49 Republicans joined with Democrats in supporting a similar bill two years ago. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., has suggested he is open to supporting a repeal even though he previously opposed it, but Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, the Republican chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has indicated he would like to instead replace it with something else. But it is unclear what that would be.

Kaine and Todd Young, R-Ind., who led the effort together, have said they believe a strong bipartisan vote sends a powerful message to Americans who believe their voices should be heard on matters of war and peace.

President Donald Trump’s administration cited the 2002 Iraq war resolution as part of its legal justification for a 2020 U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian Gen. Qassim Soleimani, but the two war powers resolutions have otherwise rarely been used as the basis for any presidential action. About 2,500 U.S. troops&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iraq-war-anniversary-troops-military-d1d9a7e6e83925dec22fce4d2e2c831e">remain in Iraq</a>&nbsp;at the invitation of the Iraqi government and assist and advise local forces.

A separate 2001 authorization for the global war on terror would&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/senate-vote-war-powers-iraq-afghanistan-a174a1b97644f2f64994f13b1ff41a20">remain in place</a>&nbsp;under the bill, which President Joe Biden has said he will support.

The October 2002 votes to give Bush broad authority for the Iraq invasion were a defining moment for many members of Congress as the country debated whether a military strike was warranted. The U.S. was already at war then in Afghanistan, the country that hosted the al-Qaida plotters responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, something Iraq played no part in.

The Bush administration had drummed up support among members of Congress and the American public for invading Iraq by promoting what turned out to be false intelligence alleging Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. After the initial March 2003 invasion, American ground forces quickly discovered that the allegations of nuclear or chemical weapons programs were baseless.

The U.S. overthrow of Iraq’s security forces precipitated a brutal sectarian fight and violent campaigns by Islamic extremist groups in Iraq. Car bombings, assassinations, torture and kidnapping became a part of daily life for years.

Some GOP senators opposing the repeal, including McConnell, have raised concerns about recent attacks against U.S. troops in Syria. A&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-military-syria-iran-db9ac72843a0a71c995d6ea04392cdbf">drone strike</a>&nbsp;last week killed an American contractor and wounded five troops and another contractor, then a rocket attack wounded another service member. Iranian-backed militants are believed responsible for the attacks.

Biden and his administration have argued that the repeal would not affect any response to Iran. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, both said at a Senate hearing last week that American troops are authorized to protect themselves and respond to attacks, including under Article 2 of the Constitution, which gives the president the authority to protect troops.

The pushback from McConnell comes amid a growing rift in the Republican Party on the U.S. role in the Middle East, with some echoing Trump’s “America First” message to argue against military intervention abroad. Other Republicans are concerned Congress is giving too much leeway to the president in matters of war.

“I think a lot of lessons have been learned over the last 20 years,” said Young, the Indiana senator who is the lead Republican sponsor of the repeal. He said that those supporting the legislation “want to ensure that the American people can hold us accountable, rather than delegating those important authorities to an executive branch and then lamenting the unwitting wisdom of the executive branch if things don’t go well.”

Chapel in Eudora.&nbsp; Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on 
Friday at the Hoisington City Cemetery in Hoisington, KS. &nbsp;Jerry passed 
away on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at his home.

Jerry was born on October 15, 1941, in Great Bend, KS the son of Vernon and Elizabeth (Lehning) Hanzlick.

He graduated from Beeler High School and Fort Hays State University. 
He played baseball at Dodge City Community College where he played an 
exhibition game at the Airforce Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. He also
 played baseball at Fort Hays State University.

Jerry retired from his career of 60 years in banking, his last 
position as president of Solutions North Bank in Hill City, KS. &nbsp;He also
 taught Banking Seminars at Kansas State University. &nbsp;His passion was 
farming, where he took pride in his wheat crops and enjoyed tending to 
his cattle.

He was a member of Warring Dove International Missions Ministry.

He was involved with supporting the local 4-H groups.&nbsp; He enjoyed 
hunting, fishing, boating, and camping. He was an avid supporter of 
Wycliffe Bible Translators and Navigators. He was a life long collector 
of Indian Artifacts and Fossils.

He married Joyce Woydziak on May 27, 1972, in Hoisington, KS.&nbsp; She resided in their home.

Other survivors include his children, Julia Hanzlick-Krumme of 
Lenexa, KS; Joel (Melissa) Hanzlick of Olathe, KS; Jessica (Kevin) 
Willmann of Collinsville, IL; seven grandchildren, Drake, Malia, Pierce,
 Avery, Reese, Evelyn and Jaret; his nephews, Doug Christie and Rod 
Christie and great-niece, Hannah Christie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Jaret Matthew 
Hanzlick, his sister Norma and her husband, Larry Christie.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday,

Miltonvale, Kansas, to Glenn William and Verla Elsie Lockard Weber, whom 
they named Vivian Joyce. Her big sister Merna Eilene welcomed her with 
open arms, thus beginning a childhood of mischievous adventures. The two
 sisters shared a special bond that lasted an entire lifetime. 
She was raised in a Christian home, and her and her sister, along with 
lots of cousins, built many special memories. Making mud pies, climbing 
trees, windmills, and rooftops, and chasing lightening bugs were just 
some of the shenanigans they found themselves up to. 
She received her schooling from attending public schools in Smith Center
 and Colby, Kansas, graduating with the class of 1961, Colby High School. 
On June 9th, 1962, she married Larry Lee Dewees at the Colby First 
Presbyterian Church, and in the following years became mother to Tamara 
Lynn, Stacy Jo, Mark Wayne, and Rick Lee. Grandmother of 13 
grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. 
On March 27th, 2023, The Lord decided it was time to take that special soul back home. 
She is preceded in death by her brother-in-law Charles Schroeder, her parents, and her ex husband.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man accused in a fatal crash that killed a Kansas Sheriff's Deputy made a court appearance in the case Tuesday.

Kelvin Burgett, 28, Prescott Valley, Arizona is charged with involuntary manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and&nbsp; driving while suspended, according to the Sedgwick County arrest report.

In October, a&nbsp;2016 Dodge Charger driven by Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy Sidnee Carter, 22, Bel Aire, was southbound on 135th Street at 29th Street north one mile west of Northwest Wichita and Maize responding to a disturbance, according to Sheriff Jeff Easter.

A westbound 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Burgett failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the drivers side of the Dodge Charger, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Deputy Carter was pronounced deceased at the scene. EMS transported Burgett to a local hospital.

Deputy Carter had only worked in the field alone for a week, according to Sheriff Easter. She began field training in the summer of 2022 and completed that training Oct. 1.&nbsp;

Deputy Carter had served the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office for one and a half years in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility before transferring to the Law Enforcement Bureau in February 2022. She graduated the Law Enforcement Academy on July 21, 2022.&nbsp;

Ethel M. Peterson, 89, died Monday, March 27, 2023, at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City.

She was born on October 31, 1933, the daughter of Henry and Myrtle 
(Smith) Peterson on Happy Hallow Stock Farm just south of the Hodgeman 
County line. She was a lifetime resident of Ford County.

Ethel attended Dodge City High School and graduated in 1952. After 
graduation, she attended Fort Hays State University and received a 
Masters degree in Counseling. She also did graduate work at Colorado 
State University in Fort Collins.

She was a teacher in the Dodge City and Kismet school districts 
before becoming the director of counseling for USD 443 in Dodge City. 
She also taught for Kansas Newman University from 1994 to 1996 when she 
retired.

Ethel was also a Kansas Legislator in 1996. She was a board member 
with various organizations including; the NEA, the KNEA, Dodge City 
Credit Union, CASA, New Chance, Dodge City Community College, Kansas 
Teachers Hall of Fame, and the Dodge City School District. She was also 
the first President of the Red Hat Society.

She was a member of the Universalist Church of the Larger Fellowship.

Her survivors include: her nieces and nephews, Nancy Browne, Judy 
Byer and husband Jack, Dennis Peterson, Darrel Peterson and wife Vicki, 
Susan Bristor and husband Randy, Terry Skinner, Vicki Austin and husband
 Jim, Becky Steinkuehler, Lindy Duree and husband Warren, Kathy Konrade 
and husband Tom, Sandy Ontiberos, Tammy Schweitzer and husband Randy, 
Billie Diane Kroeker and husband Richard, Rita Clark and husband Joe, 
Rhonda Zywicki, , Sheena Wyatt, and John Smith and a nephew-in-law, 
Eddie Day; numerous great nieces and nephews and numerous great great 
nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 4 brothers, Harry, Victor, 
Robert and Norman Peterson; 2 sisters, Arlene Dumler and Viola 
Steinkuehler; 2 brothers-in-law, Herman Dumler and Jiggs Steinkuehler; 2
 sisters-in-law, Audrey Peterson and Frances Burkey; a nephew, Mickey 
Peterson; and 2 nieces, Glenda Crawford and Tonya Day.

A Gathering of Family and Friends will be announced and held at a 
later date. There will be no public viewing as cremation as already 
taken place.

The family suggests memorials to CASA or the Shade Tree Commission 
both in care of Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, 
Kansas, 67801.

Carson was a gentle soul with a tender heart and a formidable presence.

through the mountains, and the thrill of picking up unique items at 
antique stores. 
Carson was surrounded with love from his five sisters, Yavonne, Linette,
 Melissa, Justina and Marcella; four nephews, KC, Dakota, Montana and 
Parker; two nieces, Hannah and Olivia, and his devoted companion Lesa.

They could get the marks back by paying up to $11 a month. But some longtime users, including 92-year-old Star Trek legend Shatner, have balked at buying the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/twitter-api-eca5709035a08d2ebed8fac673809ea8">premium service</a>&nbsp;championed by Twitter's billionaire owner and chief executive Elon Musk.

After months of delay, Musk is gleefully promising that Saturday is the deadline for celebrities, journalists and others who'd been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk-twitter-inc-technology-software-mobile-phones-b9110ad02f8d5e17d130b259fa19d852">verified for free</a>&nbsp;to pony up or lose their legacy status.

It may or may not be notable.”But while “the attention is reasonably on celebrities because of our culture,” the bigger concern for open government advocate Alex Howard, director of the Digital Democracy Project, is that impersonators could more easily spread rumors and conspiracies that could move markets or harm democracies around the world.“The reason verification exists on this platform was not simply to designate people as notable or authorities, but to prevent impersonation,” Howard said.One of Musk's first product moves after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk-twitter-inc-technology-san-francisco-business-204237cbfdc7a2bb11d3457f6de6c19e">taking over Twitter</a>&nbsp;was to launch a service granting blue checks to anyone willing to pay $8 a month. But it was quickly inundated by imposter accounts, including those impersonating Nintendo, pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Musk’s businesses Tesla and SpaceX, so Twitter had to temporarily suspend the service days after its launch.The relaunched service costs $8 a month for web users and $11 a month for iPhone and iPad users. Subscribers are supposed to see fewer ads, be able to post longer videos and have their tweets featured more prominently.
