Teen wanted for protest shooting at police arrested in Kansas

FINNEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a protest and riot in Sioux Falls, South Dakota have  reported  the suspect was arrested in Kansas, according to Sam Clemens with Sioux Falls police.

The peaceful protest on May 31 over the death of George Floyd became unruly when some in the crowd began throwing large rocks and bottles.  

Police reviewed video of the riot and saw a person pull a firearm from a waistband and point it at officers before firing several shots.

Police identified the suspect as 17-year-old Decimas Jesus Laurelez of Sioux Falls. 

On Friday, the U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested Laurelez in Holcomb, Kansas on requested charges of  attempted murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and riot.

George Floyd died on May 25 in Minneapolis after Derek Chauvin, a white officer, held his knee to the neck of the handcuffed Black man even after Floyd stopped moving and pleading for air. His death sparked demonstrations around the world.
