President Trump signed the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act on Wednesday in the Oval Office. The legislation restores healthy milk options in schools by reversing the Obama-era law that took whole milk out of school cafeterias.
Senator Roger Marshall wrote, “Our country is getting back to the basics when it comes to healthier living – eating real food – and the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act fits right in. This legislation is a win for our kids, ensuring they get the nutrients they need, and for the hardworking farmers who make it possible,” said Senator Marshall. “As a physician, there’s no drink I recommend more for growing kids than whole milk. I’m proud to have worked with Senator Peter Welch of Vermont on this bipartisan effort, and I was thrilled to see President Trump sign it into law today.”
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) reports that nearly 90% of Americans do not meet their daily dairy intake recommendations. Specifically, Americans are lacking enough Calcium and Vitamin D, and whole milk is an excellent source of both vitamins. Leading nutritionists have found that whole dairy fats have no negative effect on a diet, and may even reduce the risk of heart disease.
The legislation was first introduced by Senator Marshall in June of 2023. It was reintroduced in April of 2025 with numerous bipartisan sponsors and co-sponsors and passed the Senate Agriculture Committee in June of 2025.
