SEDGWICK COUNTY —On Thursday a Sedgwick County inmate received treatment for a serious chronic illness at an area hospital, according to Sedgwick County Lt. Benjamin Blick.

The inmate’s health deteriorated; therefore, the family was contacted in order to arrange visitation.

Just before 5p.m. the family decided to stop medical assistance treatment.  An attending physician pronounced the inmate dead a short time later.

In accordance with state statute, the Kansas Bureau of Investigations was contacted. In addition, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Unit was contacted, even though the death appeared to be medical related and due to natural causes.

The inmate had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since July 19, 2020, for one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of kidnapping, according to Blick. The inmate’s death was the first in-custody death of 2022 in the Sedgwick County jail. His name has not been released.
