RILEY COUNTY— Authorities are working to determine the cause of a weekend fire at a rural home in Riley County.

Just before midnight Friday, crews were dispatched to a fire at 4721 Freeman Road near Tuttle Creek Lake, according to a media release from Riley County Fire District #1.

The volunteer fire crews found smoke and flames showing from the residence.

One resident was treated on scene for minor injuries he sustained while exiting the home. No other injuries were reported and no pets were lost in the fire. Unfortunately, the residence and nearby outbuilding were considered a total loss.

The cause of this fire is under investigation by the Kansas Fire Marshal. Foul play is not suspected.

Manhattan Fire Department Battalion 1 and Engine 1 responded as a mutual aid request. Crews remained on scene until 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning performing mop-up operations and monitoring conditions.

"This is an unfortunate loss for the homeowner, but we are thankful no one was seriously injured and the fire didn't spread to neighboring homes,"  said Doug Russell, Deputy Chief of Operations for Riley County Fire District #1. "We are incredibly grateful to the crews who spent long hours keeping this fire contained to the initial structures.”
