SHAWNEE COUNTY— Authorities investigating a fatal Labor Day house fire have identified the victim as 9-year-old Alexander Honea of Topeka, according to a statment from the Topeka Fire Deparatment.
In addition to the boy's death, six others were injured in the fire.
Just after 4a.m. Monday, crews responded to a mobile home fire located at 137 NE Coachlight Drive, according to a media release from the Topeka Fire Department.
First responders found smoke and flames coming from the home. Firefighters began an offensive fire attack, and they were able to keep the fire confined to the residence.
Alexander Honea was pronounced deceased at the scene. One other juvenile and one adult were transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. One adult was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Two Topeka Police Officers, one Topeka Firefighter and one civilian bystander were treated for non-life-threatening injuries they received during emergency efforts.
The Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family. Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be an accidental electrical fire. The home did not have sorking smoke detectors. The fire remains under investigation.
