SEDGWICK COUNTY —The Sedgwick County Sheriff's office is investigating a fatal Kansas police officer-involved shooting.
Just before 10 a.m. Monday a police officer in Goddard attempted to make a traffic stop for an alleged traffic violation, according to a media release.
The driver refused to stop. The officer followed the driver south of Goddard at reasonable speeds and eventually discontinued the pursuit but followed the vehicle.
At one point, the driver gestured and showed a handgun from inside his vehicle. The driver stopped at 183rd West and 63rd South, got out of the vehicle and approached the officer.
The officer gave numerous commands for the man to drop the gun, but the man refused. The officer fired his service revolver at the man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Goddard Police officer has been placed on administrative leave.
Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter and Goddard Police Chief Lance Beagley are expected to release more information on the case Tuesday, according to Sheriff's Lt. Nathan Gibbs.
