JACKSON COUNTY— A man sentenced to 35 years in prison for a shooting that killed a woman and injured a man in Independence in 2018 faces new charges after his attempt to escape the court house.

David Harris, 21, was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years for second-degree murder and armed criminal action and 10 years for assault and armed criminal action.

After the sentencing recommendation was handed down, Harris removed his leg brace in the bathroom of the courthouse and attempted to flee, according to a media release from the prosecutor's office.

He was captured nearby. The prosecutor's office said he is now being investigated for attempted escape.

Harris was convicted in July of killing Mary Schmitz, 20, and injuring a man at an apartment in Independence on Sept. 18, 2018.

Harris told police he fought with the injured man and shot Schmitz during the fight, according to court records.
