Suspect jailed for shooting that forced Kan. school lockdown

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a shooting have a suspect in custody.

Just after 2:00 p.m. on Monday, police received a report of a shooting in the 800 block of S.W. Tyler Street in Topeka, according to Police Spokesman Daniel Garrett.

First responders found one victim with a gunshot wound who is being treating for non-life-threatening injuries. Nearby schools went on secure campus for a short amount of time due to the shooting. One suspect was taken into custody.

On Wednesday police reported the suspect in this case identified as 48-year-old Maleek Lashann Hughes is in custody for attempted 1st degree murder, aggravated battery, and unlawful discharge of a firearm. He is being held on a $1,000,000.00 bond, according to online jail records.
