Deputies, KHP track down Kansas shooting suspect

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect in connection with a shooting that critically injured a man.

Just before 8p.m. September 9th, 2023, at approximately 7:48pm, Montgomery County Dispatch received a 911 call of a subject who had been shot 210 E. Bell Street in rural Wayside, Kansas thirteen miles southwest of Independence on US 75 highway, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

Dispatch received information that the suspect had left the scene.

Independence City Fire and EMS along with Havana Rural Fire were also dispatched. Upon Montgomery County Deputies arrival, they located a man later Identified as Nathaniel Rush of Caney, Kansas who had critical injuries and needed immediate medial attention.

Deputies started assisting with Rush’s injuries until Paramedics arrived on scene and took over. Rush was life flighted to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Detectives, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and MGSO crime scene unit began processing the scene. Deputies along with the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) were tasked to search for the suspect.

Later KHP located the suspect vehicle at a residence in Independence, Kansas. Troopers and sheriff's deputies located the suspect later identified as 53-year-old Robert Darrow of Wayside, Kansas and took him into custody.

Darrow is being held on requested charges of second degree attempted murder.  Rush remained hospitalized Tuesday but is improving, according to Wade.
