Kansas City Police officer shot during traffic stop

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a incident that injured a Kansas City Police officer.

Just after 10p.m. Monday, police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near 46th and Benton in Kansas City, according to Officer Jake Becchina. Officers were conducting an initial investigation regarding potential impairment on the part of the male driver.

Additional officers responded to the scene to assist. The officers were in the process of placing the suspect into custody at which time the interaction escalated.

The suspect was able to access a firearm and discharge it, striking one of the officers. Additional officers were able to get the suspect into custody and gain control of the firearm. The injured officer was transported to the hospital with what is preliminarily thought to be non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect remains in custody at this time and appeared uninjured as a result of the interaction.

 Crime Scene Investigators are processing the scene to gather all available evidence. Police released no additional details early Tuesday.
