MANHATTAN—The Kansas State University family is mourning the death of former university president Jon Wefald.
In a statement from the K-State social media page, current K-State president Richard Linton wrote, “The K-State Family is deeply saddened to learn of former K-State President Jon Wefald's passing.
Dr. Wefald's legacy is one of transformation, growth and a true passion for our great university. Our condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time."
Wefald served as the university's 12th president from 1986 to 2009, the second longest term as any K-State president, according to the university web site. He retired at the end of the 2009 academic year.
In June of 2014, the newest residence hall on the Manhattan campus was named Wefald Hall in his honor. It was the first residence hall built on the university's main campus since Haymaker Hall in 1967 and opened for the fall semester in August 2016. Wefald was 84.
