Prison for road-rage beating death of 74-year-old Kansas man

BUTLER COUNTY —A Kansas man man is going to prison for a road-rage beating death of of a man in 2023. 

On July 10, Ashton McCoy, 24, was sentenced to 21-years in prison, according to Butler County Attorney's office. In May McCoy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated assault. 

Just after 1 p.m. October 8, police responded to a reported battery at the Jump Start convenience store in the 1600 block of West Central in El Dorado, according to a media release. First responders found 74-year-old  Alton Algrim of Leon, Kansas, with injuries in connection with a road rage incident. EMS transported the victim to a Wichita hospital. 

Following an investigation, officers arrested McCoy initially on a requested charge of aggravated battery. The charge against McCoy were amended to first-degree murder following Algrim's death.
