🏀Monarchs cruise past Russell in sub-state opener

HAYS - The TMP Lady Monarchs used runs of 15-0 and 10-1 in the first half as they cruised to a 51-13 win over Russell Monday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in the first of the 3A sub-state.

Trailing 3-2 early in the first quarter Emilee Lane and Sophia Balthazor hit back-to-back three-pointers sparking a 15-3 run putting TMP (18-3, 10-1 MCL) up 17-3 late in the first quarter.

Lane finished the first quarter with eight points and Balthazor added five more as TMP led 19-5 after one quarter of action.

In the second quarter Russell (9-12, 4-7 MCL) was held to a single free throw as the Monarchs outscored the Broncos 10-1 building a 29-6 halftime lead.

The Monarchs highest scoring quarter came in the third quarter as TMP outscored Russell 20-5 taking a 49-11 lead into the fourth quarter.

With a running clock in the fourth quarter TMP claimed the 51-13 victory.

TMP’s Emilee Lane led all scorers with 15 points. Jaci VonLintel, in her first action since injuring her ankle before the Norton game and missing three games, added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Russell was held to just two field goals. Rylan Reeves and Harlee Donovan both scored three points.

TMP will take on Goodland in Thursday’s sub-state semifinals in Norton.
