19-year-old accused in fatal Kansas motel killing

SHAWNEE COUNTY– Law enforcement authorities investigating a Tuesday afternoon shooting have identified the victim as James Epps, Jr., 37, of Topeka.

Just before 2 p.m. officers were dispatched to Travelers Inn, 3846 SW Topeka Blvd. on a report of a shooting, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

Responding officers located Epps suffering from life-threatening injuries. American Medical Response personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.

Multiple people were taken into police custody to be interviewed.

A suspect was identified as Isaiah Krainbill, 19, of Topeka. Police located and took him into custody and later booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on a requested charge of First Degree Murder, according to Lt. John Trimble.

Multiple people were taken into police custody to be interviewed. Police have not released the name of the victim.
