Kan. inmate serving time for aggravated assault found dead in his cell

EL DORADO, KAN. – El Dorado Correctional Facility (EDCF) resident Brooks Vonthaer, 40, died Tuesday. Vonthaer was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday afternoon, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Corrections. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Vonthaer was serving a 62-month sentence for four convictions of aggravated assault, criminal trespass, theft, and criminal damage in Shawnee County, Kansas.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections, the death is under investigation by the agency and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
