Police: SW Kan. man broke into apartment, fed his dog

FINNEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 2a.m. Thursday., police were dispatched to the 2700 block of Chainey Street in Garden City for an aggravated burglary-in-progress, according to a media release.

The reporting party told officers that an unknown man was inside her apartment, and she had locked herself in her bedroom.

Upon arrival, Officers located the man, identified as  31-year-old Berny Cantu of Garden City with a large dog.

Cantu was taken into custody without further incident, and Cantu’s dog was taken to the Garden City Animal Shelter.

Through further investigation, Cantu allegedly broke into the apartment, took dog food from the residence, and fed it to his dog.

Cantu is being held in the Finney County Jail on requested charges of Aggravated Burglary and Criminal Damage.
