Gas leak during house fire in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY—Authorities are investigating the cause of a house fire in Kansas City, Missuri.

Just after 6a.m. Saturday, crews responded to a house fire in the 5900 block of Brooklyn Avenue in Kansas City, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

On arrival crews reported heavy smoke and fire from a story and half occupied residence. Interior operations were initiated using multiple handlines. Searches of the structure were conducted and came back all clear. During the fire the gas meter was damaged, however crews quickly recognized this and were able to secure the meter and reduce the leak. After the fire was extinguished, Spire Gas was able to completely secure the meter and leak without any additional issues.

City Planning and Dangerous buildings were requested to the scene.
