
KANSAS CITY —The Kansas City Missouri Police Department is attempting to locate a suspect wanted in connection to a homicide which occurred on August 2 at 4709 Independence Avenue, according to KCPD Officer Alayna Gonzalez.
If you see 28-year-old Naim W. Coody-Burnett, notify law enforcement immediately and do not attempt to approach him. If you have information on Coody-Burnett's whereabouts, please contact the KCPD Homicide Unit at 816-234-5330 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced charges against Coody-Burnett. He faces 2nd Degree Murder, three counts of Armed Criminal Action, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and 3rd Degree Domestic Assault.
According to court records, Kansas City police responded to a shooting near Independence Avenue and Van Brunt Boulevard on Aug. 2 and located a female victim suffering from gunshot trauma. She was pronounced deceased on scene.
Based on surveillance footage and witness reports, the defendant was engaged in an altercation with a former partner, allegedly broke out her car window and struck her in the face with a firearm. A witness walked toward the defendant wanting to fight but then walked away. As he walked away, the defendant opened fire into a crowd of people, striking the victim. At least two people opened fire toward the defendant in response.
A Jackson County judge set the defendant’s bond to $150,000 cash only.
The Prosecutor's Office filed charges on Aug. 14, and the case has been unsealed in an attempt to help the Kansas City Police Department locate the suspect who is still at large.
