SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect wanted for alleged child sex and immigration crimes after a traffic stop.
Just after 1a.m. Sunday, a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 1998 Honda Civic in the 1400 block of SW Topeka Boulevard that was failing to maintain its lane of traffic, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.
During the investigation, it was determined that the driver was too impaired to operate a motor vehicle. After providing multiple false identities, Deputies arrested 41-year-old Hugo Enrique Lopez-Vela of Topeka.
He is being held on requested charges of driving under the influence, felony interference with law enforcement, aggravated false impersonation, transporting an open container of liquor, driving with a suspended driver’s license and improper driving on a laned roadway.
Investigators also discovered that Lopez-Vela had a felony warrant for aggravated indecent liberties with a child and an immigration felony deportation violation.
