KANSAS CITY —Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run incident  that occurred just after 10p.m. Saturday in Kansas City.

According to KCPD Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a silver Toyota Camry was  westbound on Independence Avenue at a high rate of speed. A pedestrian was crossing Independence Avenue at Monroe from south to north in a marked crosswalk with a red traffic control signal.

The Toyota driver failed to stop for the red traffic control signal and struck the pedestrian.

The Toyota then ran over the pedestrian and fled the scene without stopping. EMS transported the pedestrian to local hospital with life-threatening injuries and they were later  pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

This is Fatality #47 compared to #59 at this time last year, according to Gonzalez. Police did not release the name of the victim.
