Kansas City man killed in 3-vehicle wrong-way crash and fire

CASS COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Tuesday in Cass County.

The Missouri State Highway reported a 2022 GMC Savana driven by a 42-year-old Kansas City, Missouri man traveled northbound into the southbound lanes of Interstate 49 just south of Belton.

The van struck the front of a 2025 Freightliner semi driven by a 51-year-old Ames, Iowa man. After impact the Freightliner struck the passenger side of a 1992 Peterbilt semi driven by a 66-year-old Webb City man.  The van caught fire and caused the other two vehicle to also catch fire.

The van driver was pronounced dead at the scene.  EMS transported the Freightliner driver to Research Medical Center. There were no other injuries. The MSHP had incomplete seat belt usage information. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims. The accident kept I-49 closed in both diretions until early Tuesday evening.
