JACKSON COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 11a.m. Wednesday in Jackson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Dodge Avenger driven by Ayinde-Jriel James, 44, Fort Worth, Texas, was northbound on U.S. 75 two miles north of Holton at excess speeds.

The driver began to pass numerous vehicles without sufficient clearance and struck a southbound 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Melinda J. Wareham, 74, Whiting. The vehicles collided head-on, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.

Wareham was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Frontier Forensics. James was not hospitalized. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.
