KANSAS CITY —The Kansas City Fire Department is investigating the cause of a building fire at 1716 East 8th Street.

Just after 7p.m., crews from fire station 10 noticed a column of smoke one block to the north in the area of 8th and Woodland, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

They responded and on arrival they reported heavy fire from a two-story vacant building and requested a working fire response.

Interior operations were initiated but crews quickly had to evacuate and assume defensive operations and continued working to get the fire completely under control.  Determining the cause of the fire will be difficult due to the amount of damage, according to Hopkins.
