SALINE COUNTY —The future of the pit bull dog ban in Salina will be decided in a special election in February, according to the City Commission on Monday.
The commission decided to use a mail ballot. Registered Salina voters will receive a ballot in the mail and a postage-paid envelope. The ballot must be returned to the clerk’s office prior to the February 24, deadline.
In October a group presented a petition to repeal the pit bull dog ban in Salina to the Salina City Manager’s Office. The Saline County Election Officer validated the petition.
In 2004, the city enacted a pit bull ban. Once the February 2026 election is complete, the decision is law for at least ten years.
Overland Park, Hiawatha, Independence, Clay Center, Bonner Springs and Garden City have repealed similar pit bull breed bans in the past.
