Kan. man captured after I-70 chase, crash and manhunt

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect following a chase and manhunt.

Just before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, a sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a 2010 Toyota Camry for following too close and reckless driving near Interstate 70 and SW Valencia Road, according to Deputy Shayna Anderson.

The driver later identified as Kaleb Gilliatte, 22, Topeka, failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated.

The Toyora continued eastbound on I-70 then exited at southbound SW Auburn Road. The Toyota crashed in the 1600 block of SW Auburn Road and then Gilliatte fled on foot.

A perimeter was set up and a search was started using K9 officers and the Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter. Shortly after 11 a.m. the driver was located in a heavily wooded area and placed into custody. After receiving medical attention he was transported to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office for questioning.

Gilliatte was later booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on reqested charges of flee and elude, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving and following too close, according to Anderson.
