Cause of 2 alarm Kansas City apartment fire under investigation

KANSAS CITY —Authorities are investigating the cause an apartment fire in Kansas City.

Just before 11a.m. Monday, crews responded to an apartment fire at 116th and Winchester, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

First arriving crews reported heavy black smoke.  After several minutes of interior firefighting the crews had to evacuate the structure. A second alarm was ordered, and fly-pipe operations were initiated.

The fire was brought under control at approximately 11:30 a.m.. The building houses 12 apartment units. Eight units were occupied. A total of ten residents requested Red Cross assistance. One resident was treated and released on the scene and one firefighter was transported for evaluation due to heat related issues. A damage estimate has not been released.
