TOPEKA —Former President Donald Trump started the new year with the 2022 elections in mind.
Early Monday, Trump announced his support for Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt in the race for governor of Kansas.
In February, Trump endorsed Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran for reelection in 2022. The announcement made it unlikely the two-term Republican would face a serious challenge in the GOP primary.
In the November 2020 election, Trump carried Kansas by nearly 14 percentage points.
His statement Monday praised Schmidt saying, "he's doing an outstanding job, will be a very popular and wise choice. Derek is strong on crime, the borders and our always under siege Second Amendment."
