RENO COUNTY—An improperly installed wood burning stove caused a Wednesday morning  fire in Hutchinson.

Just after 4 a.m., fire crews responded to 628 E. Ave C in Hutchinson and found a 20 x 25 detached garage, fully involved in fire, according to Jesse Martin, Division Chief of Training and Safety.

The detached garage was occupied at the time of the fire and the occupant escaped with no injuries.

Crews began defensive fire operations on the involved structure and implemented measures for structure protection for the two houses to the south and southwest as they were being affected by radiant heat.

Occupants of both affected residences were evacuated by fire crews and had no injuries. The fire did extend into both residences due to extreme radiant heat but was extinguished quickly thanks to aggressive tactics by on scene personnel.

Six adults, who were the occupants of both structures, were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Fire investigators on scene determined the cause of the fire was an improperly installed wood burning stove in the detached garage. Fire officials reminded that with the colder temperatures that all wood burning appliances be installed and maintained by professionals.
