Teacher arrested in Okla. charged with child sex crimes in Kansas

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A former Kan. teacher accused of an inappropriate relationship with a student made her first court appearance in the case Wednesday. 

On Tuesday, Christin Covel, 31, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail, according to the daily booking report. On Wednesday, she made her first court appearance and was charged with 3 counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of unlawful sexual relations, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. She is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

On Jan. 4, police arrested Covel, a teacher at Edison Preparatory Schools in Tulsa, on complaints out of Sedgewick County, according to Tulsa Police Department. She is accused of having inappropriate relations with a boy while working at Mead Middle School 2601 E Skinner Street in Wichita.

The incidents involving the boy happened between 2018 and 2019, according to police. Covel worked in the district from 2015 to 2020, according to USD 259.

The Tulsa school district sent a letter to parents Jan. 4 to inform them of her arrest, according to the district web site.
